A plea for a readable Java (for each, Set Integer & subclasses )

I like the new language features a lot, but I don't like the proposed syntax. I thought the great thing about Java was that it got us away from the awful C++ punctuation soup. Here's my proposal for a more readable syntax without adding new keywords to the language:
for each (Item i in collection) { ... }
'for' is already a keyword. By separating this, we can part this production as:
ForStatement: for Identifier ( Type VariableDeclaratorId Identifier Expression ) Statement
(Using the productions and terminals in the JLS).
Note that, after the first 'for' is encountered, the parser can look at the next token (right-paren or Identifier) to determine whether this is a 'for each' or an old-style 'for' statement. We don't need to make 'each' or 'in' into an keyword, and they don't conflict with variable, method, or class names. Semantic checking will simply ensure that the Identifiers mentioned have the appropriate contents.
Next, for the variance syntax:
Set<Integer & subclasses> Set<Integer & superclasses> Set<*>
Again, the grammar here is:
Identifier < Type & Identifier> | Identifier < * >
The '&' is not otherwise allowed in parameterized types before 'extends', so there is no grammar ambiguity. The Identifier following & in this production is checked to be only 'subclasses' or 'superclasses' (otherwise a syntax error). There is no conflict with class names, because Set<Integer & Foo> is not a legal use for a class named 'Foo'.
To save typing, perhaps 'subclasses'/'superclasses' can be shortened to 'sub'/'super' without sacrificing readability. I expect invariant types will still be most-heavily used, so I don't think fingers will be hurting all that much.
Perhaps this Identifier-not-keyword idea can be taken further with some of the other new grammar productions? I await suggestions!
Comments/Votes?

Read the papers on variance. In a nutshell, a generic
type A<X> is not related to the generic type A<Y>,
regardless of the relationship between X and Y.
Variance changes that and is a proposed addition in
the (very) new generics implementation.I find your comment confusing. Maybe I am misunderstanding the OPs intentions with this syntax.
Right now:
List<java.util.Date> is a List that only allows instances of java.util.Date. I can still add a java.sql.Date to this list, though, because an instance java.sql.Date is an instance of java.util.Date.
His proposal:
List<String & superclasses> Now given the current syntax, I would take this to mean that this defines a List that takes instances of String and an instances of any superclass of String i.e. instances of Object i.e. anything other than primitives.
I think what you are saying is that if I define a method (for example) like so, method(List<java.util.Date>) that I can't pass an List<java.sql.Date> to it. Understood, though I find that puzzling because that means an method that accepts a List shouldn't accept a List<String>. I didn't see anything in the OPs post that makes me think that is the context which this syntax would be used though it could be. Clarification would be nice.
In that context, however, List<String & superclasses> would still be quite useless because wouldn't it still evaluate to a method that accepts a List<Object>? What would be the value of rejecting more specifc List types but allow the most generic List type?

    private int targetPixel[];
    private final static int a = 0xff000000;
    for (int i=w*h-1;i>=0;i--)

My problem is since in JavaFX their is no for each loop how do you convert this java for-each loop to a JavaFX loop? Could you please provide me a solution with a sample code.
    Thank you.

How to resolve this code to java fx?
    int particles = 10;

  • Webdynpro for ABAP vs WD for Java

How different is WD for ABAP from WD for Java?
I have a good knowledge of WD for Java and I know ABAP. But how good and efficient is WD for ABAP? Would it be better to use WD for ABAP or WD for Java for SAP based portal development?
    Thanks in advance,
    Reena

    <i>
    1. We can embedd the Web Dynpro for ABAP applications in SAP screens in ABAP environment. I don't think it is possible using java web dynpro.
    </i>
Yes, you probably can, since the application can be fired simply by a URL, there is not reason that you couldn't have an HTML control in your dynpro and point to this URL.
To answer the original question,  the development model for each is pretty much the same, just two different flavors.  I think that some things make WDA better, one being that it is totally integrated into the ABAP development workbench and the Transport/change control system.  On the WDJ side, you development locally and "deploy" your changes using the DTR and CBS.  I'm not exactly comfortable with this quite yet, which is why I like WDA better..
Another thing is that we have some built in stuff with WDA, like automatic search help functionality,  ALV Grid, and Select-option functionality.  I do believe that SAP is working on some of these for WDJ.

2)What are the functionality that are available in Web Dynpro for Java but not in Web Dynpro for ABAP.
3)What should be preferred when considering performance issues - WD for ABAP of Java?
Any Web Log or Link in this context will be helpful.

    Hi,
OOPs ABAP uses Classes and Interfaces which uses Methods and events.
If you have Java skills it is advantage for you.
There are Local classes as well as Global Classes.
Local classes we can work in SE38 straight away.
But mostly it is better to use the Global classes.
Global Classes or Interfaces are to be created in SE24.
SAP already given some predefined classes and Interfaces.
This OOPS concepts very useful for writing BADI's also.
So first create a class in SE 24.
Define attributes, Methods for that class.
    Define parameters for that Method.
You can define event handlers also to handle the messages.
After creation in each method write the code.
Methods are similar to ABAP PERFORM -FORM statements.
After the creation of CLass and methods come to SE38 and create the program.
In the program create a object type ref to that class and with the help of that Object call the methods of that Class and display the data.
see the links below, Understand them and start developing.

  • Can't print wirelessly since Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4

I have an HP Officejet J4680 All-in-One, and have been printing wirelessly from my Macintosh (OS 10.5.7) since I purchased the printer in December 2008. However, after I installed the Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4, I suddenly lost the ability to print wirelessly. I've spent hours on my own and on the phone with HP trying to figure this out, with no success. When I uninstall and reinstall the printer, I can get to the point in the HP Setup Assistant in which the network configuration has been successfully downloaded to the printer (I see an IP address, Subnet Mask, etc.), but then I get an error message of "Device Not Reachable . . . please make sure that your Mac has access to the network and retry." My Mac does have access to the network because I can get on the internet wirelessly.
I've tried entering the IP address manually, etc.--but nothing has worked. It's as if the printer is on the network, and the computer is on the same network, but they somehow can't talk to each other. Anyone else notice this problem, and how do I solve it?? Thanks in advance for your time!

Hello Laura C. I haven't noticed any problems with my wireless connections to my Canon printers, at home or at work, and I have the Update 4 installed. I also cannot think how this update would have impacted your ability to connect to the printer, except maybe due to a reliance of the HP software using Java to operate. But this should not have stopped your existing connection from working, only a new connection...
Apologies in advance if you have already been through the following, but if you were successful in entering an IP address manually, I would then check that you can get a response from the printer. The best tool to use is Ping. Open Applications > Utilities > Network Utility. Here you will see the Ping tab, as well as several other IP tools.
Before you select Ping, select Info (it probably has defaulted to this). This pane shows you the current IP address settings for your Mac. Since you are using wireless, change the drop menu from en0 (which is Ethernet) to en1 (wireless). This will show your current IP address set in the Mac. Make a note of this.
Now select the Ping tab and enter the IP address of the HP. Change the number of pings to 4 and press the Ping button. If the addresses are correct and the network infrastructure working you should get a response. If you get something like " 4 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss", then that would explain the unreachable message.
The biggest cause of this symptom is subnetting. To explain further, an IP address consists of two parts, the subnet and network address. The subnet is determined by the subnet mask. If you have a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, the your subnet is the first three sets of numbers in your IP address and the network address is the last number. For example, an IP address of 10.0.1.10 and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 has a subnet of 10.0.1 and a network address of 10. For devices to communicate on a local network, they typically need to have the same subnet and a different network address. Can you confirm the subnets for the Mac and printer are the same and the network addresses are different.
If you get responses to the Pings, which indicates the IP addressing is okay, the other services like firewalls can stop some printer utilities from working correctly. Have you checked your System Preferences > Security > Firewall setting is set to allow all incoming connections?

  • JAVA for embedded systems: just a myth ?

    Hi,
I'm relatively new to JAVA (a year or so), and so far I'm fascinated. I've only developed for PC using J2SE, although I'heard a lot of hipe about J2ME, which I guess is the JAVA for embedded systems (correct me if I'm wrong here).
I worked a lot with microcontrollers, and I think it would be really nice to program them using JAVA. I googled serched for JAVA enabled embedded systems, but I couldn't find anything.
Anyway, this morning I got to this site and find a very interesting article, which I'd like to share with you and hear your opinions about the 5th myth.
    The link is: http://www.chipcenter.com/knowledge_centers/embedded/todays_feature/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=10300909
    Cheers!!

    >... very interesting article, which I'd like to share with
you and hear your opinions about the 5th myth.
Very interesting. I'd always wondered what happened to the Java chips...
Here's a thought, and an associated question, if any of you reading this happen to be up on modern processor architecture...
What about microcode? Back in school (decades ago) I learned a bit about microcode, which was like very simple, low-level instructions that a processor would "execute" to execute each assembly/machine language instruction. The idea was that if you needed to tweak the instruction set of a processor, you could rewrite its microcode. Seems like this would lend itself nicely to implementing a JVM in "hardware"... The question is, do they even use microcode anymore? With the pursuit of speed and optimization, I wonder if they didn't abandon it and go with highly specialized/optimized circuits instead...
Back to the original question -- it would be somewhat ironic if Java weren't available for embedding systems. The original target system was set-top boxes, etc. I've tried a few JVMs on my Palm -- they're getting there!

  • Run SAPehpi for ABAP + standalone Java

I have run SAPehpi several times for NW04s ABAP+JAVA.  Because ABAP and JAVA are on the same server,
the process is very smooth and easy.
Now I try the same thing on a NW04s with ABAP and JAVA on seperated servers.
Could you share your experience on how to coordinate the dual stack with each on different  server?
Blogs and links are very helpful.
    Thanks a lot!

Why do you need a sequence if they are standalone systems?
I normally in any other scenario apply ABAP and then JAVA so I would proceed in the same way.
    Don't forget the backups  :-D

As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:
Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 onwards:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard onwards changed the location of a number of system components.
Poster rccharles has provided this description of what it all means:

  • Possible Java for OS X 2013-005 malware on my MBP?

Hello all, so I was looking for some android file transfer software for my MBP (running maverick OS) the other day and I got a pop up asking me to install java. One of the apps had said it was cloud based, so i figured the java went with it. It prompted me to install Java for OS X 2013-005. I did so.
Afterwards I had heard that Java is not good to have on macs due to vulnerabilities. So i looked into uninstalling it.
I found a way using terminal with sudo rm -fr /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin and also a way where I search for JavaAppletPlugin.plugin and delete that.
I tried to do both and did not find java....this worried me. I also saw that the latest version of Java is Java for OS X 2014....So I was wondering why it asked me to install an older version....
Did I somehow install malware on my mac? And if so, how do I check and get rid of it?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be a series of messages in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
    [Process completed]
The messages won't be spaced equally apart in time, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it. Then go to the next step.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
