JAVA for embedded systems: just a myth ?

Hi,
I'm relatively new to JAVA (a year or so), and so far I'm fascinated. I've only developed for PC using J2SE, although I'heard a lot of hipe about J2ME, which I guess is the JAVA for embedded systems (correct me if I'm wrong here).
I worked a lot with microcontrollers, and I think it would be really nice to program them using JAVA. I googled serched for JAVA enabled embedded systems, but I couldn't find anything.
Anyway, this morning I got to this site and find a very interesting article, which I'd like to share with you and hear your opinions about the 5th myth.
The link is: http://www.chipcenter.com/knowledge_centers/embedded/todays_feature/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=10300909
Cheers!!

Very interesting. I'd always wondered what happened to the Java chips...
Here's a thought, and an associated question, if any of you reading this happen to be up on modern processor architecture...
What about microcode? Back in school (decades ago) I learned a bit about microcode, which was like very simple, low-level instructions that a processor would "execute" to execute each assembly/machine language instruction. The idea was that if you needed to tweak the instruction set of a processor, you could rewrite its microcode. Seems like this would lend itself nicely to implementing a JVM in "hardware"... The question is, do they even use microcode anymore? With the pursuit of speed and optimization, I wonder if they didn't abandon it and go with highly specialized/optimized circuits instead...
Back to the original question -- it would be somewhat ironic if Java weren't available for embedding systems. The original target system was set-top boxes, etc. I've tried a few JVMs on my Palm -- they're getting there!

Hi, I need some crypto libraries for my Xlet running on a MHP receiver. I need that these libraries can use the public key extracted from a certificate and encrypt a digest using that public key. I can't use javax.crypto because it doesn't work on a limited MHP 1.0.2 receiver. I need something studied for it. Thank you!!!

  • Bonjour for embedded system

    Hi,
I have followed the steps provided in the install file to intilize the bonjour for embedded system . first I generated the shared ib for bonjour source code for my embedded system and then I initilized it by calling mDNS_Init  api.
Since I just need to browse at my client , I called the browsing fucntion as per dns_sd.h  , but I got the below error .

I am able to fix the above issue , but subtype search on the embedded systems  throws an erros

  • Compiling linux for embedded system using Arch.

Hi. I build the vanilla kernel for an embedded system using special buildsystem. This buildsystem calls
    make INSTALL_MOD_PATH=embedded_fs_path modules_install
    The kernel's Makefile installs the modules to embedded_fs_path/lib/modules/$(KERNELRELEASE) and calls /sbin/depmod -b embedded_fs_path $(KERNELRELEASE).
This operation fails under Archlinux because /sbin/depmod is a part of kmod and it expects that modules are placed to /usr/lib/ instead of /lib, so it tryes to make dependencies in embedded_fs_path/usr/lib/modules/$(KERNELRELEASE) instead of embedded_fs_path/lib/modules/$(KERNELRELEASE).
What is correct solution for this issue? I can pass DEPMOD variable to kernel's Makefile to use something else instead of /sbin/depmod, but i don't know value of this variable should be.
Is there any command line options for kmod to force using /lib instead of /usr/lib? As I've seen in kmod sources, there aren't.
Is there any package in repositiries or AUR or somewhere else which provides an application that behaves the same way as old depmod with /lib/ modules location?
    Thanks.

tavianator wrote:Fedora Core 7?  Wow, that's ambitious.  I'd suggest building in a virtual machine or chroot with the target system installed.
centos is probably worse.  They're still on 2.6.18 as far as i can tell.
I wanted to avoid chroot/virtual machine (ran one of those for a while).  The reason is that my current development build is the same as what is delivered.  I don't want to lose that....having to deal with different compilers, libraries, etc can be a pain.
I'll also look into whether or not I can install a "glibc-compat" type package that could alleviate the loader.
    Here's the telling part:
    the new exectuble:
    $ file <executable>
<executable>: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, AMD x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.6.27, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.27
    the old executable:
    $ file <executable>
<executable>:  ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.8
Okay....issue seems to be in the glibc PKGBUILD.
    it has the line:
          --enable-kernel=2.6.27 \
    passed to glibc configuration.
Causes big time problems for creating compatible packages.

  • LabView for Embedded Systems

    Hi all.
I intend to develop an Embedded System, based on an ARM9 MCU, and I´ve been wondering if LabView could be used to create stand alone applications to run on such a system.
I can use Windows CE, or Linux on my system, but I prefer Linux.
Can I develop applications directly on LabView for Linux?
What minimal resources would be needed to run an average LabView application on such a system, like memory capacity, minimal MCU clock speed, etc?
I´ll apretiate any comments, since I have no ideia about what can be done with LabView out
    of the PC universe.
    Thanks alot.

You can run LV EXEs (not the development environment) on CE if you buy the LV PDA module. Note that applications built using this lack features regular LV applications have.
I remember some threads dealing with the minimum necessary to run LV on linux. If I remember correctly, the basic idea is there are a few official linux versions supported and that anything outside those you will have to experiment on your own. Here's one example. You can try looking for more.
If you want, official requirements can probably be found in the main LV linux page (whereever that is).
Try to take over the world!

Why is that? Your suggestion worked but I don't understand why.
When our MDB on machineA did the JNDI lookup to MachineB we set the
credentials to a valid user/password on MachineB.
My speculation: Since the MDB on machineA is already in a transaction
any other JNDI calls use the credentials for the MDB's transactions,
ignoring any other credentials we might try to set explicitly. If my
speculation is correct then that would explain by the passwords for the
user "system" would have to be the same between servers.
Is there a good place to read up on this?
              Thanks

  • Java.lang.SecurityException: Authentication for user system denied in realm wl_realm

I am experiencing this error when a servlet or JSP is preloaded on the web
server and the init method of the preloaded item results in a call to the
app server. If I don't preload and then manually invoke the JSP or servlet
after the web server completely loads the call to the app server does not
produce the exception. The only security differences between the web and
app servers are the console and system passwords. I can fix the problem by
making the passwords (system and console) the same across the board, but
find it hard to believe that this is the true solution. I would prefer
sticking with the default security settings.
I've poured through hundreds of messages. I can find similar problems but
    not this exact problem.
Any ideas would truly be appreciated!

You're correct. I meant the DOMAIN_SYSTEM_PASSWORD password in my
<domain-name>domain.ksh file. The DOMAIN_SYSTEM_PASSWORD value (if
specified) has to match the system user's password or else the server will
    not start/stop.
I have determined more since my post. A startup class also produces the
same error. I have minimized my environments as follows and still receive
the exception, and a soon as I synchronize the system users' passwords on
the app/web server the problem goes away. Or, I can keep the passwords
different and just not access the app server EJBs until after the web server
finished loading, which also causes the error to go away. I'm just confused
about what I might be doing wrong.
    Steps to produce the error:
    App server:
    - Installed from 6.1.1.0 from scratch and started it up.
    - Changed the system user's password from the admin console, persisting the
    changes.

    Web server:
    - Installed from 6.1.1.0 from scratch and started it up.
    - Modified logging settings to see more info in the log files.
    - Disabled instrument stack traces.
    - Added a servlet to the DefaultWebApp_insiteserver application
    - specified name and class
    - the load on startup setting defaulted to zero, which will cause the
    preloading
    - Added 3 jar files to the classpath to support the EJB call
    - Stopped/Started the web server
When the web server loads the servlet loads and tries to locate the EJB on
the app server. The app server throws the security exception. The app/web
servers are both running on the same SUN box, have the same IP address
(different ports) and I'm using non-SSL. Each server is it's own WLS
environment. The only installed file that is shared it the
weblogic_domain_registry.dat file in the root directory. As for security,
I'm doing nothing except changing one password (system user on the app
    server).
I then tried to manually upgrade the app/web servers to 6.1.2.0 by updating
the WEBLOGIC_ROOT in the respective xxxxdomain.ksh files. Same problem.
I then cleanly reinstalled the app/web servers using version 6.1.2.0 and
    configured as above. Same problem.
Let me know if I need to provide additional details.
    Thanks,

I am experiencing this error when a servlet or JSP is preloaded on the
    web
server and the init method of the preloaded item results in a call tothe
app server. If I don't preload and then manually invoke the JSP orservlet
after the web server completely loads the call to the app server does
    not
produce the exception. The only security differences between the weband
app servers are the console and system passwords. I can fix the problemby
making the passwords (system and console) the same across the board, but
find it hard to believe that this is the true solutionI don't quite understand what you mean by "console" password? Are you
talking about the admin console? If so then it's confusing because youhave
to log into the console using the system user. If you can clarify morehere
    it would great.

    Hello,
Just a quick question: can we have an official position from Sun regarding support of earlier releases of Solaris with Java RTS 2.1? Our customer is currently running Solaris 10 Update 3 with current Recommended patches, and the 2.1 beta cyclic driver supported this version of Solaris. However with the official release version of 2.1, support for U3 disappeared (only U4 and U5 are now supported). Aside from "rubber stamping" the Solaris build via /etc/release, is there a technical reason why U3 is no longer supported? As long as our kernel is up to date, can we safely use 2.1? Or is it just a case of being unable to officially support and test so many releases of Solaris?
Is this a general rule-of-thumb we can expect in future: only supporting the last 2 updates of Solaris 10?
    Your advice is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave.

  • Install Java SE for embedded

    Hello,
I am trying to install Java SE for Embedded 7 ARM v6/7 Linux Headless on my Pogoplug ARM v6 running Linux Arch.
For this I downloaded the .tar.gz file from Oracle's website ( version=7u4-armv6-eabi-k2.6.28-libc2.9-hflt-le), applied the tar command to decompress, moved the result to /opt/java, adapted the enironment variables by editing the /etc/profile file as follows:
    PATH="/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/opt/java/bin"
    export PATH
    export JAVA_HOME="/opt/java"
    export PATH="opt/java/bin:$PATH"
when running an application that needs JAVA, I get:
    17015 Illegal instruction     java -Declipse.ignoreApp=true -Dosgi.noShutdown=true -Djetty.port=8080 -Djetty.port.ssl=8443 -Djetty.home=. -Dlogback.configurationFile=logs/logback.xml -Dfelix.fileinstall.dir=addons -Djava.library.path=lib -Djava.security.auth.login.config=./etc/login.conf -Dorg.quartz.properties=./etc/quartz.properties -jar $cp $* -console
I assume Java is not installed correctly (it is the first time I install manually)?

I see the same error for my ARM9 from Atmel. I think it's because my ARM9 AT91SAM9263 processor is ARMv5TEJ and ejre1.6.0 require ARMv6 or above. Don't mix up ARM9 and ARMv6. It's different thing.
