A problem about a string length of the JTextField.

Hi, all.
I have a problem of check the length of the text in the JTextField. Look at the following program snippet.
import javax.swing.text.*;
import javax.swing.*;
import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.*;
import javax.swing.event.DocumentListener;
import javax.swing.event.DocumentEvent;
public class test extends JFrame
JTextField jTextField1 = new JTextField(50);
static final int MAX_LENGTH = 10;
public static void main(String[] asArgs)
test testFrm = new test();
testFrm.setVisible(true);
class newDocument extends PlainDocument
public void insertString(int offs,String str,AttributeSet a) throws
BadLocationException
String strTmp;
strTmp = jTextField1.getText();
int nSize1 = strTmp.getBytes().length;
int nSize2 = str.getBytes().length;
if(nSize1 + nSize2 > MAX_LENGTH)
return;
else
super.insertString(offs,str,a);
public test() {
try {
jbInit();
catch(Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
private void jbInit() throws Exception {
jTextField1.setText("");
this.getContentPane().add(jTextField1, BorderLayout.NORTH);
newDocument myDocument = new newDocument();
jTextField1.setDocument(myDocument);
public void removeUpdate(DocumentEvent e)
jTextField1.setText(sOldStr);
System.out.println("removeUpdate");
Attention please: I want to check the bytes of the inputted string. It is no problem with english string inputting, but if I input a string with other charset such as A Japanese string or a Chinese string, it doesn't work(when your input string is as long as the MAX_LENGTH, it doesn't work well). How can solve it? Thank you very much.

i believe the problem is that you didn't set the font of the JTextField.
I don't know what's the default Font of the JTextField is (i think it's dialog)
the default textfield cannot display chinese character (and mort unicode character - latin 2 - extends and above).
You need to set the font that can handle displaying the CHinese & Japanese characters (however, your application may not work if you port your app to another computer..and they don't have the font that you specified (unless you ship the font with it))
// why are you getting converting the String to byte and then get the length???
int nSize1 = jTextField1.getText( ).length();

  • URL openStream problem. URL String length

    Hi,
    My problem is about length of the url string. I'm simply creating a URL and trying to call openStream() to get content. But if the length of url string exceeds 118 characters, I'm getting an exception. It says Server returned Http response code 505.
    If I try the same url string in a browser it's working.
    Thanks for all replies in advance...

    the problem solved, it was about white space not length... I didn't notice the white space there sorry!

    hello user457523
    I have found the reason to that error.It's because there's a trigger and ext_src_file_nm is populated by the trigger from another column ext_src_file_loc when inserting and I didn't give any value to ext_src_file_loc so ext_src_file_nm is null.
    I have disabled that trigger and now I get new errors.When I traced to a line of Jave code I got missing source file warning,and the source file is also oracle.sql.CharacterSet.java.I can not trace into the source file and then I skipped that code and then I got new errors.I want to know how to trace into the jave code and find what's the matter.
    Thank you very much.

  • Restrict the input string length

    Hi, how do I restrict the input string length in a JTextField. Suppose if I want my text field to accept only 4 characters, the fifth character I try to enter shouldn't be accepted in the field.
    Thanks,
    Kalyan.

    This is for 6 characters limit
    //create a JTextField that is six characters long
    JTextField textField = new JTextField(new FixedNumericDocument(5,true),"", 6);
    Here boolean true means only numeric. set to false to take in alphanumeric.
    import javax.swing.*;
    import javax.swing.text.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    public class FixedNumericDocument extends PlainDocument {
    private int maxLength = 9999;
    private boolean numericOnly;
    public FixedNumericDocument(int maxLength, boolean numericOnly) {
    super();
    this.maxLength = maxLength;
    this.numericOnly = numericOnly;
    //this is where we'll control all input to our document.
    //If the text that is being entered passes our criteria, then we'll just call
    //super.insertString(...)
    public void insertString(int offset, String str, AttributeSet attr) throws BadLocationException {
    if (getLength() + str.length() > maxLength) {
    return;
    else {
    try {
    if (numericOnly) {
    Integer.parseInt(str);
    //if we get here then str contains only numbers
    //so that it can be inserted
    super.insertString(offset, str, attr);
    catch(NumberFormatException exp) {
    return;
    return;

  • Questions on: 1) Last Update; 2) Max String Length; 3) dynamic table keys

    Hi:
    - I am currently prototyping a plug-in but I have some questions:
    - 1) At the 'All Metrics' table, what is the intent of the 'Last Upload' field,
    and how is this field updated?
    - I have created some metrics but for some metrics the 'Last Upload' field
    has a timestamp but for other metrics there is no data.
    As far as I know, the metrics are similar but I do not know why the behaviour is different.
    - 2) Is there a maximum string length that the Oracle agent can accept?
    - I have a script which just returns all the environment variables into one cell.
    In emagent.trc, the Oracle agent issues the following warning:
    2009-08-27 12:38:47 Thread-76336 WARN upload: Truncating value of "STRING_VALUE" from "AGENT_HOME=
    - Is the truncation an issue?
    - 3) I have created some dynamic tables from performing an snmp walk, but the key that I use
    is the index of the SNMP table. The data is collected correctly, but I am not sure that using
    the table index as the key for OEM is a good idea because the metrics are stored according to the SNMP table index.
    Should the OEM key be the something like 'object name' instead of the index number from performing an SNMP walk ?
    For example, when I click a metric, the metric name is: Sensor Index 1.
    But should it not be something like 'Fan #1' ?
    Thanks John

    Metrics are collected at certain intervals, the Last Upload field indicates the date and time of the last time a metric collection was uploaded. The quicker the interval, the more recent that date should be. If you don't specify a CollectionItem in your default collection file for your metrics, they won't be collected or uploaded.
    If your metric column is a STRING type, it is stored in a VARCHAR2(4000)
    I'm not sure I understand your last problem... You have a table metric with a set of columns. The column you use as the key is just some tracking index which doesn't really mean anything. As long as your key column(s) make the row unique, the agent will be satisfied. If you want something more meaningful as your key, then it's something you will have to inject into your dataset if it isn't already there.

  • Problem about Mac Os X 10.6.3 V.S Labview 2009

    hi,labview~
    i have some problem about Labview 2009.i saw the website of NI wrote the Labview 2009 is not support for Mac OSX 10.6.3,but i have already installed it (English system) in my computer successfully.
    anyway,i cant open the programs which are wrote by labview 8.5(Japanese system) .My labmate who use Labview 2009(Mac OSX 10.5) can open those programs.
    can anyone tell me the possible reason i cant open the programs?
    Thanks a lot!
    PS i have already tried Labview 8.5 and 8.6(English system),but the problem cant be solved....

    Hi mofi, my name is Taiki from National Instruments Japan.
    I assume that the link you referred to is the one below, but as you stated, LabVIEW 2009 is not supported in Mac OS X 10.6 so even though you were able to install it successfully, NI cannot assure that it will fully function on your Mac.
    LabVIEW Support for Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and 10.5 (Leopard)
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/70F17A30DE7B865E8625737F006377F8?OpenDocument
    Since you mentioned that the VI files were able to be opened on LabVIEW 2009, Mac OS X 10.5, the actual VI files should not be the issue which leaves us with the possibility of the software environment.
    You also noted that the issue could not be solved on LabVIEW 8.5 and 8.6 but was this on Mac OS X 10.6 as well?
    If so, there is a good chance that this issue is due to the fact that LabVIEW is running on an supported OS and I would suggest trying opening the files on another different Mac OS X 10.5 system.
    Unfortunately, currently Mac OS X 10.6 is an unsupported OS for any version of LabVIEW so I can only suggest trying on a Mac OS X 10.5.
    Kind regards.

  • String length excluding input string/character

    Long story short, I want to replicate the String Length function but to not include an input string in the character count. For example:
    The input (search) string is "the".
    My first string to test is "The big red dog."
    This would return a string length of 13.
    My second string is "Jumps over the lazy fox."
    This would return a length of 21.
    "Hello World!" would return 12.
    "The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe" would return 26.
    Hopefully you can see what I'm trying to achieve. How is this possble?
    - James
    (I am runnnig Labview 8.5)
    Never say "Oops." Always say "Ah, interesting!"
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Use the Search and Replace String to replace your "exclusion string" with an empty string.  Use the String Length on the resulting string.  Make sure the Relace All is set to TRUE.

  • Approval task SP09: Evaluation of approvalid failed with Exception: while trying to invoke the method java.lang.String.length() of an object loaded from local variable 'aValue'

    Hi everyone,
    I just installed SP09 and i was testing the solution. And I found a problem with the approvals tasks.
    I configured a simple ROLE approval task for validate add event. And when the runtime executes the task, the dispatcher log shows a error:
    ERROR: Evaluation of approvalid failed with Exception: while trying to invoke the method java.lang.String.length() of an object loaded from local variable 'aValue'
    And the notifications configured on approval task does not start either.
    The approval goes to the ToDO tab of the approver, but when approved, also the ROLE stays in "Pending" State.
    I downgraded the Runtime components to SP08 to test, and the approvals tasks works correctly.
    Has anyone passed trough this situation in SP09?
    I think there is an issue with the runtime components delivered with this initial package of SP09.
    Suggestions?

    Hi Kelvin,2016081
    The issue is caused by a program error in the Dispatcher component. A fix will be provided in Identity Management SP9 Patch 2 for the Runtime component. I expect the patch will be delivered within a week or two.
    For more info about the issue and the patch please refer to SAPNote 2016081.

  • Short code causes a strange problem - About the list again -- please read!

    Hi again people. Maybe you remember my project - has a list, that you can search thru using a text field. During the work I got stuck on a strange problem ( Again :-( ) My app has one text field, one combo box, one list and a text field once more. The code should do the following ->
    *1. Load the list, no problem with that.*
    *2. Show the elements of the list, that match the selected group in the combo box,no problem.*
    *3. Search thru the list using the text field,no problem.*
    4. When the user selects an element from the list, it should display its info in the second text field. This also works fine, but when after looking at info of one of the elements the things on numbers 2 and 3 ( look up! ) stop working. I must say that everything works fine until user selects an element from the list. I couldnt understand this kind of behavior so I am asking you to help me please.

    Keith, thanks for making that readable. So here's the diagnosis -
    In the refresh() method, calling defaultListModel.clear() results in a valueChanged(...) event in which this method calldefaultListModel.getElementAt(list.getSelectedIndex())results in the exception noted, as getSelectedIndex returns -1, the list being empty... you can't getElementAt(-1).
    I haven't analyzed all the code nor checked whether is now works as desired, but this small change to valueChanged counters the exception being thrown.   public void valueChanged(ListSelectionEvent e) {

    Yea! You were right! I didnt think that calling *list_model.clear();* will result in calling *valueChanged()* ........
    That was some *clear()* thinking :-) Thank you!

How much does it slow down the loading time? Should I do this on all my projects, because they are all "very naighty"?

  • How to increase the string length of an uploaded file

    Hi,
    i use a abap webser where i've uploaded some JAR files into the mime repository.
    Unfortunately the string length is limited by 40 characters and so longer file names are cut.
    How can I increase the default string length? Does somebody know a workaround?
    Thanks.

    what i guess copying those jars should not create this problem.U just try in db using
    "ALTER TABLE <table_name> MODIFY <column_name> VARCHAR2(<new, larger length>)"
    may be it works.

    Hello,
    I am running the report from the web. The url will be something like
    http://localhost/cgi-bin/rwcgi60.exe?server=repserver+report=.rep+all the input parameters.
    When the length of the string passed from report= execeeds certain limit(indicated by dashes) I am getting the cgi error
    Error: The requested URL was not found, or cannot be served at this time.
    Oracle Reports Server CGI - Unable to communicate with the Reports Server.
    If I remove some of the select criteria then I could execute the report from the web.
    Any body has any soln. for this.
    Thanks in advance,
    Vanishri.

    The limit is very high and you should not be hitting this problem. There are couple of fixes done in this area. Please apply the latest patch (Patch 10) and try.
    Other solution is you can have a mapped key in cgicmd.dat file and use the key alone in the URL. In the cgicmd.dat file, you have to map say
    key1: REPORT=your_report.rdf USERID=user_name/password@mydb DESFORMAT=html
    SERVER=repserver DESTYPE=cache
    Please refer to the Publishing reports or Reports services manual at http://otn.oracle.com/docs/products/reports/content.html
