A question of resources

Hi, all -
I work for a school district and we have a lab in each building filled with eMacs. At each campus, we're running the latest version of iLife, but at one campus, the eMacs are a year older than the other. They're 700 MHz machines with a gig of RAM.
iMovie, for some reason, has always crashed a LOT in this lab. More than in the other school, which has eMacs a year newer (but, owing to upgrade cycles, is occasionally a year behind the other lab in terms of OS & application upgrades).
Anyway, my boss asked me today to find out if iMovie HD really is more of a resource hog than the previous version of iMovie. That is, does it - simply due to its HDV support - really require more system resources to run? (He wants to know if we should downgrade back to the earlier version to prevent all the crashing.)*
My gut-level response is that it does not, unless you really are using HDV footage. Seems to me, if it's only dealing with straight DV material, it won't even bother loading or using the HDV codec, and should play nice with the system.
I feel that if I suddenly hook up my personal HDV camera to it and ingest some footage, the program should then slow down on our eMacs simply because it now has to crunch more compressed video and a higher pixel count.
Am I right about this? Is there any real data to support it? Or am I just plain wrong?
If anyone knows, please feel free to chime in... especially any real Apple tech people lurking out there. One way or another, I'd like to have some technical-level input on this.
*(As to the question of downgrading, I feel that while it's possible the older version bogarts fewer system resources, it also doesn't benefit from bug fixes introduced in the newer version... I suspect it's workflow and the files that students try to bring into the program which are causing the crashing, more than the software itself.)
- Mike

... especially any real Apple tech people lurking out there. ...
I dare to say: neverever... this is a user2user board, never saw in THIS section of a board a host nor employee..
a) min. requirements..
see my specs: I'm running iMHD5 smoothly on a system, clearly under min.specs... (esp. iDVD)
b) what I've read here so far - avoid a "mixture" of apps and QT components...:
10.3.x. + QT 6.x + iLife 5
or...
10.4.x + QT 7.x + iLIfe 6
we read lots of trouble, people using a mix; makes apps unstable, crashing, misbehaving...
c) MacOsX needs RAM, lotsof... when upgrading my Cube from 512 to 1GB RAM - woooshsh!! less RAM >> lots of hd activity >> slow/if hd crowded >> unstable
d) video needs harddrive space, MacOsX needs hd space.. make sure, you have ALLWAYS 5 - 15GB free on internal (external don't matter in this issue) drive... that makes system and apps stable&smooth ...
e) no HiDef video in use here, but what I've read so far: HDcontent needs a fast/powerful system for importing, 'cause it has to convert first into Apple Intermediate Codec; HiDef needs 4 - 5x more harrddrive space compared to .dv; ... as long as you stay .dv .. should work ...
f) iLife 4 >> 5 made a quantum leap in file-management, mainly the "non distructive editing" feature - means: be careful/wise with import. import just parts of tape, you need for editing; avoid laaaaarge, single clips, try to import small segments...
g) iLife 5 >> 6 made a quantum leap in grafic card resources.. read the specs Matthew linked to ... in a school, I don't see any need for fancy "themes" ... you shoud learn, to do movie editing manually ;-)))
... any letters left, I could fill... ?
hope, you found something helpful....................

  • Questions on Resource Mastering

    DB version : 10gR2, 11GR2
    The word Resource in "Resouce Mastering" actually refers only to a Block. Not rows, table,..etc. Right?
    Under what circumstance does the master of one resource (an instance) is changed to another one?
    I read the following in a book titled "Pro Oracle Database 11g RAC on Linux"
    Cache Fusion block transfers rely on the Global Resource Directory, and they never require more
    than three hops, depending on the setup and the number of nodes. Obviously, if there are only two
    cluster nodes, then there will be a two-way cache transfer. For more than two nodes, a maximum of
    three hops will be necessary.
    What is the hop they are talking about?
    Added a third question
    Edited by: T.Boyd on May 4, 2011 12:02 PM

    Hi,
    yes it refers to a block. Though the entity can be different - sometimes all blocks of an object (table) can be remastered. This then will affect all rows of the table. But remastering happens at block level.
    If you put it in simple wording: "In general when an object is frequently accessed form one node only."
    However this is not as easily reproduced. Also the internal mechanism to detect that is much more complicated.
    The hop is a very small message.
    Easiest described that way (this happens only when multiple instance wants to write/update. In case of reads it is much more simpler):
    You have 3 partners in a RAC. One instance (A) has the block in cache, one instance (B) requests the block for writing, and one instance (C) is the master for the block.
    Master means, this instance knows which instance has the block at the moment.
    What generally is known in the cluster is, who is the master of each block. (That is maintained in the GCS).
    So what happens now is, that B sends a message to C to know who own the block.
    C then informs A to ship the block to B.
    The block gets shipped and B informs C that now he (B) is the holder of the block.
    So you have 3 informational messages, and one block shipping, which is the maximum.
    If holder/requester and master are on the same node, you don't have any message (so 0 hops).

    Sebastian

  • Struts question - message-resources

    Hi,
    I'm trying to do someting which should be pretty straight forward, but can't figure it out. In my application.properties file I have a setting. (DEBUG = true). I can spit this value out in my jsp easy enough using
    <bean:message key="DEBUG"/>
    But what I want to do is be able to decide in the jsp (using some logic) if the flag is set to true, then show some hyperlinks (for debugging purposes).
    What I kinda want to do is this (i know this doesnt work)....
    <logic:equal name="message?" property="DEBUG" value="true">
    <p>debug mode</p>
         .. print some stuff
    </logic:equal>
    Obviously I'm not getting a handle to a bean here & thats why it doesnt work. But is there a simple way to do this. I dont want to code this property into into a bean - there must be some way of doing it.
    I was looking around on the web and found a site where somebody mentioned that a "messages" bean is created and put in the session. If this is true then I could possibly get the above syntax to work, but I dont know how to get the name of the bean - (message doesnt work)
    Any help would be greatly appeciated
    Paul

    I don't think the logic tags are tied into struts like the bean and html tags. The only way I know of is to get the message resources the hard way...
    <%
    MessageResources mr = (MessageResources)application.getAttribute(Globals.MESSAGES_KEY);
    Locale locale = (Locale)session.getAttribute(Globals.LOCALE_KEY);
    pageContext.setAttribute("DEBUG", mr.getMessage(locale, "DEBUG"));
    %>
    <logic:equals name="DEBUG" value="true">
    That should work, I think.

  • Noob Question 19: Resources For Learning Videography

    ...or whatever you wanna call it. I need some suggestions for books/web sites that can teach me more about video production... not just editing in Premiere, but stuff like lighting and so on. For example, a friend of mine suggested a light box and it clearly helps him a -lot-. I'd like to know where to get them, what's a good deal, how to use it, and so on.
    Ideas for learning how to film properly?
    Thanks!
    ---JC

    Hi Jim,
    Looks great. I may look at the local community college for a similar course. In the mean time, I was hoping for something like
    'Using shop lights, cardboard and duct tape for key lighting just like the pros.'
    Seriously. That's about my budget. So I'll shut up now.
    Thanks,

  • Master Data question - Resource Master

    Hi,
    Got some master data related questions on Resource master. I am kind of relatively new to APO and trying to understand master data fields and functionalities. Can someone please explain me in layman terms with a small easily understandable example,
    1)     What is the difference between time continous capacity and bucket capacity?
    2)     What and where do we use u201Cexternal capcityu201D? I read somewhere that if we check box the external capacity, then APO uses capapity from R/3. What difference does it make if capacity used from R/3 or bring it over to APO and use it from APO? When u check box the u201Cexternal capcityu201D you are already bringing the resource to APO. So what is the use of using the capacity from r/3?
    3)     A Multi activity resource has a capacity of 8 hrs per day. For example a resource has 5 lathes and u can carry 5 different activities/operations at the same time on this resource. So every lathe has 8 hrs of capacity, that means the overall capcity is 5*8 = 40 hrs???? and where are we specifiying number of lathes u201C5u201D in the resource master?
    4)     What is the advantage of deriving bucket capacity from time continous, than directly defining bucket capacity?
    Thanks
    Appreciate your help..

    SCM,
    I will today work on your question 1.  As time permits, if Sri Mathur cannot respond, I will then attack the another question later.
    1) what I am trying to understand here is..bucket capacity is 1 day minimum. that means 24 hours of capacity????? if yes, then time continuous capacity can be equal to bucket capacity if no breaks. if breaks are there then it is less than bucket capacity?
    If one operation takes 2 hrs then that means, 1 SNP bucket capacity can hold 12 such operations??? Really confused.
    Buckets can have any amount of capacity.  For instance, if you define a capacity as a Daily bucket, you can further define it to have less than 24 hours of capacity.  The difference is that the system manages this capacity as a single chunk.
    Lets say I have a time-continuous capacity, which starts at 8:00 and ends at 16:00.  It has 8 hours of capacity available. If I am consuming capacity with, say, a planned order operation, the system will check whether the capacity is available, and when it is available.  So, the first planned order op that begins capacity consumption at 8:00 AM and consumes one hour of capacity will normally use the 8:00A-9:00A block of capacity.  If I am capacity leveling and dispatching, then no other order will be allowed to consume capacity during this time period (8A-9A).
    Now let us consider the same resource, but configured as a single day bucket.  I still have 8 hours of capacity.  However, when I create a planned order to consume capacity, it only checks whether I have enough available left in the entire bucket.  The same first planned op order mentioned above, could be scheduled for 8A-9A, and would also consume 1 hour of capacity.  This cap consumption is not 'from 8A to 9A', but is '1 hour out of the bucket of 8 available'.  The next production order could also be scheduled for 8A-9A, and pass a capacity availability check, because there are 7 hours still available in the bucket.  8 1-hour planned order ops could be scheduled from 8A-9A, and still pass the cap check.
    Time continuous cap consumption becomes very important if you are doing detailed sequencing of your orders, as is normally done in PP/DS.  SNP, which is usually less detailed, is more likely to use bucketed caps (with many exceptions!!).

  • File - Resource name mask

    Hi ODI gurus!
    Today I have a question about resource name (case of file name) mask. Is it possible to add a sthg like * character to resource name? I have a file which incudes a generation date in name. I'd like to load this file but I dont know the full name. Is is possible to create file mask which includes only the "core" file name without date? ie. FILE_YYYYMMDD.csv => FILE_*.csv.
    If its possible please let me know how :)
    Regards,
    PsmakR

    Hi,
    One approach would be use the OdiFileMove tool to rename the file to a fixed filename based on wildcards, then your filename would always be the same when you try to read it in.
    Cheers

  • Resource availability (xRPM 4.0/cProjects 4.0)

    I have a question about resource availability in xRPM/cProjects 4.0
    What do i need to do to be able to see real availability of my resources?
    Do i need to set up the link to HR, do i need WFD?
    Can i see the availability decrease if users have booked holiday time or training in their CATS?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Jocelyn,
    As per cProjects 3.1 and 4.0, it is possible to use WFD with cProjects. In project roles, it can be specified if a role is relevant for WFD or not.
    Note 900310 discusses the following:
    Enhanced resource management using the RPA (Resource Planner Application) and the Workforce Deployment (WFD) servers: As up to now, WFD can be used as an enhanced scenario for resource planning in cProjects to staff project roles externally or to show resource availability. However, you must install the liveCache in an separate instance in order to use these functions. See the notes in the Master Guide. In this case (when you use cProjects outside the SAP Enterprise Portal), the 'Resource planning' tab title is available at the highest navigation level in cProjects. When you use the SAP Enterprise Portal, you can use the 'Resource Planner' CRM portal role. For further information, see Note 939501.  If you intend to use cProjects 4.0 with the RPA and WFD servers, all three must be installed on the same system.
    Please let me know if WFD is forbidden for higher versions of cProjects, and if yes - what are the alternatives available.

  • ResourceBundle in foreign languages

    Hi!
    I'm using a resource bundle file. Works great in many different languages.
    However when I try to use russian letters (Cyrillic) it appears in my web page as ??????? - ?????.
    Question- do resource bundle files freak out at foreign character sets ?
    Do I need to do a meta-equiv to charset ISO-8859-5 ?
    Help please!

    I don't know about the encoding mapping stuff... but you shouldn't need to do that string getBytes translation at all. That would only be if your strings were read in as one format when they really should have been read as the other. This happens with Tomcat (and maybe others) because it always by default, uses ISO8895-1 as the encoding. Since that's an 8-bit format, it doesn't really corrupt the bytes, but if a UTF-8 string having several multi-byte characters was read, it would look like more characters (usually jibberish) then it should.
    If the page's specifed charset is UTF-8, then what the browser submits will be UTF-8 bytes. So you want the charset defined in the @page declaration cuz it'll be set in the response header that way. The meta tag is usually used for completeness, but probably isn't really needed. The setCharacterEncoding() tells the server to use that encoding instead of ISO8895-1 for reading request data. This page is something I had written to test Chinese (you should be able to see that on Win2K or XP, I think). Just copy/paste the text in the page to the form, I see no reason Russian or others won't work.
    // _lang.jsp
    <%@ page language="java" contentType="text/html; charset=UTF-8" %>
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">
    <html>
    <head>
         <title>Language Test</title>
         <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />
    </head>
    <body bgcolor="#ffffff" background="" text="#000000" link="#ff0000" vlink="#800000" alink="#ff00ff">
    <%
    request.setCharacterEncoding("UTF-8");
    String str = "\u7528\u6237\u540d";
    String name = request.getParameter("name");
    // OR instead of setCharacterEncoding...
    //if(name != null) {
    //     name = new String(name.getBytes("ISO8859_1"), "UTF8");
    System.out.println(application.getRealPath("/"));
    System.out.println(application.getRealPath("/src"));
    %>
    req enc: <%= request.getCharacterEncoding() %><br />
    rsp enc: <%= response.getCharacterEncoding() %><br />
    str: <%= str %><br />
    name: <%= name %><br />
    <form method="POST" action="_lang.jsp">
    Name: <input type="text" name="name" value="" >
    <input type="submit" name="submit" value="Submit POST" />
    </form>
    <br />
    <form method="GET" action="_lang.jsp">
    Name: <input type="text" name="name" value="" >
    <input type="submit" name="submit" value="Submit GET" />
    </form>
    </body>
    </html>Using get or post should both work fine.
    As for the resource bundles... The contents have to be ASCII text. Non-ASCII need to be converted to Unicode escapes (\uXXXX). So you can write the file in Russian (or whatever) text encoding, then use the native2ascii tool to convert the file to the proper escapes. Then it'll be read as Unicode, and there is no translation needed at all, just write the strings out to the JSP page.

  • File upload limitations

    Hi,
    Do you think it is possible to follow youtube API
    recommandations for upload (
    http://code.google.com/apis/youtube/developers_guide_protocol.html#Direct_uploading)
    according to the fact that :
    - fileReference will send with

    - URLRequest object used with FileReference methods ignores

  • Problem in Azure SQL Database Basic Tier

    I have a WinForms Application was using Azure SQL Database (Web)
    It was working fine with web version (for last 2.5 years).
    After Microsfot's new offerings of New Tiers of Azure SQL Database,
    I tried Basic Tier.
    Observation for last 24 hours according to Azure Portal when Database in
    BASIC state :::
    Successful Connections : 2 (Max), 1.5(Avg), 3(Total)
    Failed Connections : 0 (Max), 0 (Avg), 0 (Total)
    Throttled Connections : 0 (Max), 0 (Avg), 0 (Total)
    Deadlocks : 0 (Max), 0 (Avg), 0 (Total)
    Storage : 23.38MB (Min), 23.75MB (Max), 23.47MB (Avg)
    CPU Percentage : 0 (Min), 3.34 (Max), 1.14 (Avg)
    Log Writes Percentage : 0 (Min), 0.05 (Max), 0.02 (Avg)
    Physical Data Reads Percentage : 0 (Min), 0.01 (Max), 0 (Avg)
    The WinForm Application working fine but there is some problem:
    When a Report is generated (local .rdlc), the connection gives "Timeout Expired"
    This problem occurs only in 25% cases (in 75% cases works fine)with same data.
    If I upgrade database to Standard (S1) it works fine.
    QUESTION IS :
    Resource Stats show it is using very low resources.
    like CPU percentage 3.34 (Max), Log Writes Percentage 0.05 (Max)
    and Physical Data Reads Percentage 0.01 (Max)
    Why the report not works in 25% cases in BASIC state but works in STANDARD S1 state ?
    The price of Standard S1 is 8 timeshigher then BASIC
    Thanks

    Hello Fanny,
    Thanks for reply.
    I know it and that's why I mentioned different resource stats.
    My database (BASIC) using only :
    CPU Percentage :  3.34
    (Max)
    Log Writes Percentage :
    0.05 (Max)
    Physical Data Reads Percentage :
    0.01 (Max)
    While Microsoft says if any parameter goes beyond 80% usage then you need to upgrade tier

  • Authorization based on Item Name

    I have a requirement to allow a user administrator to define which menu tabs & pages are available to each user group. So... I can't hard code the authorization scheme at design time for each item.
    I've setup a form and table where the admin can link items to groups based on the item name. I can write a parameterized Authorization Scheme query to see if the item is available to the user's group - IF.. I can pass the item name as a variable.
    How can I make the item name available to the Authorization Scheme as a variable in a parameterized query? Or, can you think of another way to meet the spec?
    thanks,
    Mark

    I'm an eternal optimist (with a poor memory... ;o )
    I wish there were more/better/documented hooks intoI agree but this specific case is not about documentation, the product currently just doesn't support what you are looking for.
    The Apex team does seem to acknowledge that this would be a "desirable enhancement" as evidenced by Scott's comment in that thread
    We do have plans to externalize authorization controls to facilitate this kind of thing, it's just a question of resources for us

  • Searching XML - which is better?

    I'm just starting with XML and will be querying mainframe
    data provided in xml format. The file will be pretty large
    (muncipal property database) and the idea is to get
    up-to-the-minute data.as opposed to nightly dumps.
    I'm unsure how to bring this into Coldfusion most
    efficiently. The user will need to search based on property address
    and then retrieve proprty details like taxes etc.
    Logically XmlSearch would seem most efficient since it skips
    the steps of converting to a query object, but I'll need to present
    it all sorted in list formats too. Then there is the question of
    resource consumption each time a person hits the site to search the
    data.
    I'm confused. Can anybody help steer me in the right
    direction?
    Thanks!

    XML processing is pretty expensive, so if you have a lot of
    searching, I think I'd try converting to a query and running tests
    to see which is faster.

  • Acknowldegement in asynchronous scenario: is it sync or async

    Dear community,
    in an asynchronous scenario with a fault message type defined for the inbound interface, the handover of a message from XI to receiver consists of two steps:
    Step 1: XI will send a message to the receiver
    Step 2: The receiver will acknowledge positively or negatively.
    Will Step 1 and Step 2 be handeled synchronously or will it be handeled asynchronously for async scenarios ?
    The background of this question is resource-related. If the processing of a message is synchronous, processing of these two steps would block resources, which would be problematic for higher volumes.
    Logically it seems as if this would all be async but I could not find a detailled spec and I need to know for sure.
    Thanks a lot in advance !
    Jochen

    Hi Jochen,
    if you want to have the result of a message at the receiver you have 2 alternatives:
    Synchronous:
    +You get the errors at once
    +You know very soon, what happend
    -Bad performance, bcoz processing time may be for minutes stopped
    -no connection (receiver offline) leads to an error
    Asynchronous with acknowledgement:
    -You get only sometimes an error acknowledgement
    -The calling programm has no direct information
    +Much better performance
    +Queing mechanism allows automaticly and manually restart
    Usually you try to build, if possible, asynchronous scenarios. But it depends on requirements.

  • Challenges with Apple Mail auto-complete

    Hi all,
    I'm seeking advice regarding some challenges with Apple Mail auto-complete email addresses for a friend's AOL mail IMAP account. Main issue: in Apple Mail, recently contacted email addresses are not appearing via auto-complete. As such, I'm doing some research for him and have some questions:
    - Any resources on how email contacts are managed in Apple Mail?
    - Any resources on how email contacts are managed in Apple Contacts? What's the difference? I'm not 100% clear how they are linked.
    - Seeking alternative to Apple Mail for someone who is legally blind. Are there some alternatives with a simpler interface and possibly better integration with VoiceOver? Just curious
    Any help is appreciated.
    Mac Mini (late 2012)
    Mac OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)
    Apple Mail v 6.6
    Apple Contacts v7.1

    1)  Reindex Mail
    Go to your User's Library folder. (if you don't know how to find, see this link.)
    http://www.needhelp4mac.com/2013/11/how-to-enable-users-library-folder/
    Scroll to Mail folder.
    Select the V2 > MailData folder.
    Delete any files in MailData with envelope in the name. (should be 3)
    When you open Mail it will re-index your files.
    2)  Search is based off Spotlight cache files.
    HOW TO RE-INDEX YOUR SPOTLIGHT CACHE FILES
    From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
    *  Click Spotlight.
    *  Click the Privacy tab.
    *  Drag your drive to the list. Wait a couple of minutes.
    *  Remove the item you added.
    *  Spotlight will re-index the contents of the item you initially dragged to the list.
    Contacts in Mail
    Under Window in the Menu bar, select Previous Recipients List. If the person is in your Contacts, there will be an icon next to the email address. You can add entries to contacts or remove from the list. For example your friend got a new email address but autofil wants to use an old email address. Remove the old entry.
    While Mail and Contacts are two separate applications they are tightly integrated.
    I'm sorry but I have no other suggestions for a better email client.

  • How to Execute 7.0 reports in BI 2004s

    Hi Gurus,
