A second issue - no free space on server, possibly hacked?

On Monday morning, 4/30/2007, I came in to discover the last 80 GB left on our server was filled with 0 GB of free space. All the space had been taken up by a file/directory somewhere in one of the root folders (/etc, /var, etc). I never found out what took up all the space. Looking at our firewall, there had been a very large number of spoofed IP attempts to the server on ports 22 (SSH) and 135 and 139 (part of Samba) from a variety of IP addresses. Looking at the console log, the only thing I could find was the following error message just about every three minutes for hours and hours:
DirectoryService[55]: Failed Authentication return is being delayed due to over five recent auth failures for username: root.
So, I ended up rebooting the server after I came in, and shortly thereafter, the free space eventually returned. Was this a DoS attack or were we hacked?
I could not find any other evidence in our logs that anyone made it in, but I could be wrong.
Just as a note, I am dealing with a couple of other server issues:
1) "Could not chdir to home directory /Network/Servers/..."
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=948408&tstart=0
2) server spontaneously returns to the login screen:

Thanks,
Tyler

Why is an unsecured ssh publicly available ?
Mac OS X or any other flavor of *nix, you must secure ssh.
Don't make it publicly available (why are you forwarding traffic for port 22 ?), use ssh keys if ssh access is truly needed, and use something other than the default port (most easily done by forwarding it from a different port externally to port 22 internally at your router/firewall)
Disallow root ssh access.

  • Merging the main partition with free space: is this possible?

    Hey all!
My hard drive currently contains two partitions: 200 GB for the Tiger and 30 GB of free space I left when I wasn't yet sure if I will not want to install Linux on it. Now I am sure I won't and I'd like to merge these 30 GB back onto the first partition. Is this possible?
    $ diskutil resizeVolume disk0s2 limits
Shows 200 GB is max size for the first partition. Guess then that this won't work:
    $ diskutil resizeVolume disk0s2 230G
Any suggestions would be very appreciated!
    Artemiy.

Although there are utilities available to repartition a hard drive without erasing all data on the drive, I wouldn't trust them and since you need to create or update your backup beforehand anyway to be on the safe side, do so and then reformat the hard drive with the Tiger install package that shipped with your Mac to a single partition. This will erase the hard drive completely first and then re-install OS X and all included software along with any 3rd party software and then re-store your data from the backup.
Or with a backup utility that provides for it, create a bootable clone backup of your 200GB partition saved to an external drive. Reformat the hard drive and then restore everything completely from the bootable clone backup.
When reformatting, be sure to select HFS+ (or extended) with Journaling enabled.

  • Free Space On server

    Hi all,
Our server is running out of space because of the log files and I have to manually shrink the log files for all the database almost everyday. We are planning to upgrade the server but also, in the meantime, I would like to know whether I can change the default path of the log files to a different drive and if yes, how to proceed?
    Thanks in advance,
    Joseph

    Hi!
You can move your mdf and ldf files to different Location.
    1. Open MS-SQL Databse
    2. Enable Object Explorer
    3. Right Click on your Company DB and select Detach, before doing detach please ensure that you are logged in to the databse via, SAP B1,New Query Window,Stop Mail Services,Stop Backup Services of SAP.
    4. After Detaching, your DB will detached from the Databse List of MS-SQL
    5. Now, go to your Installtion Path of MS-SQL Server Database.(C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data)
    6. Cut the mdf and ldf file of your database.

  • Website changed on local and server possibly hacked?

    Hi all,
I have a very disturbing problem..our website is wwwDOTselfdefenseproshopDOTcom. I had help here with my Spry Menu that I was building on the left column of my site.
Just as of yesterday sometime later in the day our website displayed properly as far as the spry menu on the left side.
As of today (we just looked now) the spry menu is all wrongly displayed and changed and showing old links as well.
I checked our local files on our machine where I store the files for the site. This is where I first discovered that the spry menu work that I had done was destroyed. I then checked online and found the same.
Neither my wife nor I have touched the local files nor uploaded any changes to the server for at least a month now.
Any ideas? was our site and our connection on DW hacked somehow?
We are at a loss and more than that the work I had done is now gone....
    * NOTE TO GRAMPS if you happen to see this post...you and I had worked on my spry menu bar and I am wondering if you might still have a copy of the files from DW that I had sent you?...
Thanks to anyone for any help...

On your home page, I see 2 external links that are definitely messing you up.
    <script src="http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/widgets/menubar/SpryMenuBar.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
    <link href="http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/widgets/menubar/SpryMenuBarVertical.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"/>
If you put those links into your browser, you'll see why.. Spry is no longer being supported by Adobe.  You'll need to physically download those files from GitHub and save them to your site.

  • Free space issue! Help!

Hello there, I am having a little bit of an issue with free space on my start-up disk. For some reason, the free space keeps going away day after day. Now, this is what we have done: Deleted files on desktop, deleted emails, deleted iTunes art-work, and we got rid of some songs on iTunes. As soon as we do any of those, we seem to lose free space. If anyone can help on this problem, that would be very grateful.
    Thank you,
    Greg

Hello! HERE is some info on freeing up disk space. I think your problem may lie in how you use your Mac. Panther 10.3.x runs its maintenance routines in the wee hours of the morning to rid itself of temp files that are created for instance when a disc is burned. If the machine is not left on all night it can't run them and you have to rely on a utility such as MacJanitor or Onyx to manually rid the system of temp files. Another problem occurs when the startup disk gets too full which will eventually bring the system down so it's important to keep at least 15% of free space at all times. HERE is MacJanitor and HERE is Onyx. I personally don't use a utility as I leave mine on 24/7/365. Tom

  • Mysterious Free Space Issue

    Hello All,
Not sure if this is in the right forum or not - but I'm having an issue with my MDD Power Mac G4. I have 23 GB of free space on the drive my OS is located on - the drive is just under 70 GB in all. Recently I've been having issues with free space just dissappearing. All of a sudden, I'll only have 500 mb of free space on the drive. I reboot - all 23 GB are back.
The issue seems to happen when I first boot my computer up - example, last night i shut my tower off. This morning, booted up and started working. in less then 10 minutes time - my free space dropped from 23.2 gb to 625 mb. All I was doing was listening to itunes while i read the news on my laptop. I rebooted - and now all 23.2 gb are back...
Based on previous experiences - my system should now be fine until i shut it down again - even if thats days away.
    Anyone have any ideas??

    Thanks for the tip!
I'm not running any of those programs you mentioned - but am going to download whatsize and give that a try.
I uninstalled Intego's virus barrier today due to a seperate issue where the scanner would suck up 120% + of my processors out of nowhere. Perhaps the two issues are related somehow - only time will tell on that.

  • Determine Drive Info From Crystal Reports - Free Space & Drive Size

I am looking for a way to determine drive information in crystal reports.
I know you can report on files and directories but I'm looking to report:
    Drive Size
    Free Space
Is it possible to use Visual Basic or Crystal commands to provide this info?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Please re-post if this is still an issue to the Legacy Application Development SDKs Forum or purchase a case and have a dedicated support engineer work with you directly
No, Crystal Reports does not have any system API's. Search VB help file for more info on accessing drive space info.

  • Retrieving free space in oracle 8i

    hi,
i am having 30 gb oracle 8.1.7.2 database. by the weekend we are gonna purge around 60% of data from it. we want to use the freed space for new object. the downtime avaiable for app. is very less. so we can't go with exp/imp to retrieve free space. is it possible to do it some other way because i am having a doubt that oracle 8i does not release the space freed by deletion of recording for creating new objects. please help.

    Hi,
In order to do that you can use 2 methods:
    1/ CTAS
. CREATE TABLE new AS SELECT * FROM old WHERE <lines_to_keep>
    . DROP TABLE old;
    . ALTER TABLE new RENAME TO old;
2/ Purge data as you whish
    . DELETE FROM tabname ... ;
    . COMMIT;
    . ALTER TABLE tabname DEALLOCATE UNUSED;

  • Time machine on server doesn't show correct amount of free space

    Hi
I have a mac mini server running 10.9.3, with a drobo raid connected via usb (I wouldn't have chosen the drobo, but not my decision..). The server has Time Machine service enabled, pointing to a folder on the drobo.
When users connect to it (various mavericks clients) they can choose to use it for Time Machine, but when the clients starts to back up, they all quits quite fast, because it states that there is only from around 3-400 MB to around 80-90 GB free space.
There is, however, around 1.5 TB free space on the disk, and this registers also fine in the server app on the server.
I have tried to use another drive as the backup target, which leads to the same issue.
I have also tried to remove the backup and initiate a new on the client, but still the same. It is not consistent how far the client backup gets - the one that have gone furthest is around 45 GB.
Any idea on what it might be?
    A few more details:
    - the drobo is hfs+ journaled
    - I have checked the size restriction in the time machine settings on the server and have tried with both a 500 GB restriction and no restriction
    - the clients are all set up to do unencrypted backup
    - the clients have both been cabled connections and wifi connections
    - the clients have no problem backing up to a local connected drive
    TIA,
    Peter

I haven't got access to the server right now (so I can't provide the complete details), but something like 6-700 GB (which is more than it shows in the client time machine windows, but less than what is true (which was around 1,5 TB))

I have to backup of Gmail with Thunderbird Portable, so I could free some space on server - but when I use IMAP (to keep labels) after deletin on server...
...my post also deletes on Thunderbird. Please make an option to prevent it, so deleting on a server doesn't effect mail in the Thunderbird. I would be so happy to have it...
    David

First Thunderbird portable is supported by its author at portableapps.com.
Secondly you are describing exactly how the IMAP email standard works and Thunderbird has no control over that.
Thunderbird has Local Folders to move messages that you want to keep locally. Maybe the portable version does too.

The issue is probably space on the phone, not in your iCloud account.  (Space in your iCloud account does not give you more space on your phone.)  Check Settings>General>Usage at the top to see how much available space you have.  If it's low, you'll have to delete or sync something off our phone to make room for more.

  • Internal Hard Drive Free Space Issue

    Hey,
I recently upgraded my 17" MacBook Pro from Tiger to Snow Leopard but the upgrade seems to have created a number of problems, the most notable being the lack of free space now available on my internal hard drive.
I also had to install a trial version of Aperture 3.0.3 in order to access my aperture library as the older version of Aperture is not compatible with Snow Leopard.
At this point the free space available on my internal hard drive was 36GB and my aperture library was 39GB. I had to uninstall Photoshop Elements 9 in order to create enough free space to open this library.
I bought an external hard drive and after some organising (importing and exporting to and from external hard drive), I eventually moved all photo files/folders, projects and libraries onto this external drive, leaving only one in-progress project (about 3GB) left on the internal volume.
I also exported my iTunes library and any other files to this external drive.
    All trashes have been emptied.
The problem is that, despite all this clear-out, I now only have 2GB of free space on the internal hard drive.
I ran Disk Inventory X and it shows that my home folder is using 155GB of space, which seems ridiculous considering there is in effect nothing left on my laptop save for the application programs and the one remaining project.
I have manually checked through this folder and all its subfolders and have found nothing that would accumulate to this amount of space.
I have repaired an issue with the internal volume, but it is now showing a “minor” problem with the volume header.
If someone can provide and explanation/solution to this I would be very grateful as it is severely slowing my workflow at the moment.
    Thanks

    Baresi:
I suggest that you begin with Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
I recommend that you make sure that you make a bootable clone of your entire volume using a utility like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
You should also seriously consider installing a larger capacity drive.

  • IPhone sync to iTunes library has free space issue

The iPhone “~’s iPhone” cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the iTunes library (additional 69.9 MB required).
I have 239 GB available on my MacBook Pro running OS 10.7.5 with iTunes11.1.2 and iPhone 4 running iOS 6.1.3 and the memory nearly full — 57.2 MB Available. This now happens over 50% of the time.  These two issue might be related.  If the error statement is misleading, that should be fixed.

OK,  I deleted a bunch of pictures and it completed.
Instead of "The iPhone “~’s iPhone” cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the iTunes library (additional 69.9 MB required)," I think I'd have understood it effectively if it were "The iPhone “~’s iPhone” cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to copy all of the items into the iTunes library (additional 69.9 MB required)."  What a difference two words can make.
Who know how to get this across to Apple, Inc?

  • Disk partition issue.Cant allocate the free space for windows.ls help.

I have created a partition for OS X (200GB journaled, encrypted) and also left 51GB unallocated for Boot Camp later on.
After I successfully installed OS X 10.9, I wanted to install Windows 8.1 with Boot Camp. But Boot Camp only wants to shrink the Macintosh HD partition, and doesn't want to use the free space left on the drive. So I switched to Disk Utility, to try it that way. But in Disk Utility I wasn't able to create a new partition (if I press the 'partition' button it just doesn't do anything).
Next, I tried to switch of File Vault 2, let it decrypt itself, restart, and then try it again in internet recovery mode. But still, I cannot expand the Macintosh HD-partition or create a new partition.
    Disk Utility log:
    2014-09-04 00:42:31 +0200: Preparing partitioning: 'APPLE SSD SM256E Media'
Also, Disk Utility tells me there is 200.000.000.000 bytes of 200.000.000.000 bytes used, and 0 bytes of free space. Even though not even half of the drive is colored blue (which displays the amount of data on the drive). Finder tells me only 88GB is used.
I used the new installation for no longer than half a day, so there can't be issues that data is spread over the whole volume. Disk Utility can't find any problems, and tells me the disk and all of her volumes are okay (in green texts).
I also tried to start from a windows-install-usb, and tried to make a partition of the 'unallocated space', but then Windows tells me that it fails because the volume is part of the 'GPT partition style'.
What do I have to do to repartition my volumes!?
    I'm using a MacBook Pro Retina 15" (MacBook Pro 10,1) with a 256GB SSD (251GB according to OS X).

As you're finding, a limitation of basic disk is that it only allows 4 primary partitions or 3 primary partitions and an extended partition.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd163549.aspx
For information on converting basic to dynamic as well as considerations prior to doing so, consult this article.  It should help you make a decision whether or not you want to convert the disk:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd163552.aspx
If you decide to convert, get a backup so that no matter what you're covered. Not that it's risky, but better safe than sorry.
