A3 issues? My suggestion for a fix.*especially for trial users*
I've been monitoring Twitter and checking out the Aperture message traffic there. Folks are reporting all kinds of problems from crashing to memory leaks, very poor performance and a host of other things.
It goes without saying that there are many new A3 users that are using the program and having none of these issues. I'm in this camp - I'm using the full release software and it's performing beautifully. My library is 750gb and is comprised of various things, but a lot of 24mp DSLR raw files.
So the question: why are there these two vastly different experiences happening out there? I have a theory as to why. I believe the trial library that accompanies the trial software is somehow to blame.
People who use the trial software do not have the ability to 'convert' an A2 library into the A3 format. When people buy a license key to unlock the software, they unlock the ability to use an old A2 library and convert it.
This means that most everyone using the retail version of A3 (not the trial) will NOT be using the demo library that came with the trial. Some people using the trial have gone to great lengths to export A2 projects/files and import them into A3. But they are still using the sample library that came with the trial.
My personal belief is that the library that comes with the trial version is what is causing the issue. So, my recommended fix (which is by no means a guarantee of anything):
- CREATE A NEW LIBRARY AND USE THAT. This is done by selecting:
File->Switch to New Library->Other
When you see the dialog appear, a button to create a new library will be there. Click that, and away you go. The library will be empty, so you will need to import whatever it is you want to work with into this new library.
If you decide to try this, the library you were working with will still be there and you can switch back to it if you like.
I would be interested to see if this helps anyone. I'm hoping it does. This software is absolutely amazing. A worthy upgrade to be sure.
After reading about problems with converting Aperture 2 to Aperture 3 libraries, I did an Import. Briefly:
- Before upgrading I backed up the Aperture 2 library, and renamed the original.
- I then installed Aperture 3 from the DVD. It created a fresh, new Aperture 3 library in the "Pictures" folder. Tested it with a few photos and loved the new tools, everything went well.
- Then I attempted <file><import> to import the Aperture 2 libraries into the new Aperture 3 library. That didn't work, eventually causing the mac to lock up completely.
So I think the problem is not related to whether you use a trial or non-trial version.
Good luck to all of you trying the upgrade. It didn't work for me and I've reverted to Aperture 2 for now. But I certainly hope it works for you!

Drive setup suggestion for multiple users editing simultaneously?
At work here, a city college, not a professional company or broadcast studio, so resources are limited, we often have three people editing HDV content simultaneously in Final Cut Pro.
Keeping the content on our multiple backup servers, there's simply too much network traffic to do this smoothly.
Instead of keeping projects locally spread across multiple machines, I would like one centralized place for everything, for the Macs to access directly over gigabit or something else.
So, what kind of setup do you guys suggest for this?
The machines here are two quad-core G5s (no RAID or fiber-channel right now), and a Core2Duo iMac, F400 only.
Again, it'd need to be able to handle three HDV projects going on simultaneously without skipping due to having to seek back and forth all over the drive.
Thanks.Yes, an XSan system would perfectly fit the bill for what you want to do, but an XSAN is not a cheap solution. When it is all said and done, it will cost you tens of thousands of dollars.
The best, cheap solution would be to use Firewire drives. I would not duplicate a project onto three drives, because you will then always be trying to figure out which version is the most current. Instead, keep all of your project, capture scratch and render files on the firewire drives. Then move the drive to whichever computer you want to do the editing on.
Properly log & capture all your footage, then archive all your project files, because Firewire hard drives will fail over time, loosing all the info on the discs. I did say this was the cheap solution. "Cheap" does have its costs… -
Suggestion for a user friendly apple experience
-stop this ****** back ups that take hours, and the advice of doing them the evening and stuff i won't take cos i have better things to do that spend hours on my iphone maintenance
-stop apple audio format conversion... maybe people that have 100 songs are happy with it, but when you got thousands it's a nightmare
-make iphone and ipods recognized as external HD devices so that music files can just be changed/deleted on-the-fly
I can't believe i get so ****** each time i want to put new music in my iphone, this product could be so cool and apple makes it such a pain...If your backup is taking hours, you either have corrupted files on your iPhone or a problem with your PC. If it is the iPhone, a restore will take care of the issue.
My music doesn't get converted when I sync to the iPhone.

It sounds like the problem is your own lack of reading the manual or looking at the app store and Apple can't help you with that. -
A suggestion for fellow users.
this is not meant as a criticism in anyway and i hope i'm not speaking out of turn. everyone on here seems very polite and helpful (as they should be).
it's just that i've been using this forum quite a lot over the last few days, and i've noticed that quite often, the same questions/problems come up regularly, sometimes even within two or three posts of each other. i have certainly found myself repeating advice.
quite often, a quick look around will find the problem and sometimes a response that has even been given already. or use the search forum box on the right hand side.
if you can't find your problem easily, then post a new thread, but the odds are that someone else has already mentionned your problem, and that someone has suggested a solution - you'll get your answer a lot quicker as well!

Almost all styluses (don't know the plural) are below $10. There's not really a "bad stylus" either. Just don't try to make your own, that has a tragic end. -
Issues downloading safari for second user
After updating software on my Macbook Pro the Safari browser is no longer visible on some user accounts. As an Admin, I tried downloading and reinstalling but to no avail. Can someone help?
Not to go off topic too much, but the download from that page will install the full version if it is missing from your system. As a test, so I could be sure, I removed Safari and all associated files from my secondary computer. Then I downloaded from the link I provided above and the full version was reinstalled.
So, if Safari was missing from your system, you can reinstall it by downloading it, instead of performing an Archive and Install. But I think something else is going on here. I hope he posts back with some more information. -
Fonts missing for random users on random computers
Hello, We're running network home folders (10.4.9 and 10.4.10 client - 10.4.10 server) and recently there's been weird issue with fonts for certain users on certain computers disappearing.
These users can use other computers and other users can use these computers without a problem, but something with the specific user on the specific computer is screwing with the fonts. You can see them all in /Library/Fonts, but when a word processing app is used (Word, Appleworks, iWork, etc), the font list has only about 20 fonts.

On the Server create a folder in the Shared Items folder and call it Library, create another folder within that folder and call it Fonts. Copy all the fonts you wish your network users to use into that folder. Launch Server Admin and make sure Guest Access is enabled for the AFP Service. Go back to WGM and share that folder and use standard POSIX to apply permissions. Make admin the Owner with Read/Write privs, admin as the Group with Read Only privs and Everyone with Read Only privs.
By default when you create new share point, Guest Access is enabled for AFP and SMB. Leave these as they are. You disable FTP sharing if you wish. Select Network Mount and authenticate using the Directory Administrator account. Enable Network Mounting of the newly created share point and set it for Shared Library Use.
For the setting to take effect restart the clients.

Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.

If you just want to get the contacts back, and they are on the computer, you can just sync them from iTunes again. -
A few small issues I can't find fixes for
Hi everyone, I've been using arch for a little bit now and really enjoying the experience. I have run across 3 small problems and other than that everything thing seems to be running flawlessly. I'd appreciate any help with these, and thanks in advance. I have googled trying to find solutions and searched the wiki but either none of the issues were listed or the fixes for them didn't seem to have an effect, but if I missed something sorry, just if you want to point me in the right direction that'd be appreciated.
So some specifics about my system first, I'm running on arch linux 64bit using KDE as my desktop environment.
Okay so problem number 1:
Sometimes when arch goes to boot it fails to mount /dev/sda2 which is my root partition, This doesn't happen everytime but I'd say 50 or 60 percent of the time, but when it does I give it a restart once or twice and it loads into arch just fine. I can restart my computer if anyone wants the exact wording I get, but it goes along the lines of "failed to mount /dev/sda2 you are now being dropped in to a recovery shell" Now I'm not sure but this might be because of the weird way I set the harddrive partitions up, but it worked in all the distros I used before settling on arch, but to give you an idea, I'm using 2 300gb hard drives, I have them split so that 1 hard drive is completely devoted to my / and /boot partitions, the other one has /usr /tmp /var and swap on it. In addition I have a 1tb drive for storage that is devoted to /home. If it is causing the problem and I have to reformat and go to a more conventional partition scheme I will, but I'd prefer to avoid that if at all possible, just because I am rather settled in to this install.
Problem number 2:
Amarok takes forever and a day to load, somewhere in the area of 60+ seconds, when I start it via the terminal I get this output:

I thought maybe it was the gstreamer backend because the wiki said it might cause problems and to try using xine instead. However doing this didn't seem to help at all.
Problem number 3
Flash is all weird when I use Kwin, when I use compiz it works near flawlessly but my issue with that is then kde doesn't act nearly as smooth as it does without compiz. When I use flashplugin from the repos I can't go fullscreen because it makes everything freeze up, and when I try flashplugin-prerelease from the aur flash is always in the spot where it loaded meaning if I change tabs in firefox it goes through the other tab and if I scroll it stays stationary and everything else scrolls behind it.
Again I apologize if I missed it in the searches that I ran and these have been solved elsewhere, but thanks in advance for all help given.
Edit: Installing pulseaudio and using that instead of alsa seems to have fixed amarok starting slowly.

Oh my bad I forgot to say I'm using grub, but yeah I went through and did that, That seemed to stop me being loaded into a recovery shell or whatever, but when arch started to boot about 2 out of the 5 times I restarted to test it, it said file systems didn't check and had my log in as root to try to remount the partition. Also I got a COMERROR=-32 after which it said it was doing a comreset and would retry in 8 seconds after doing that 3 times it booted almost every time unless it ran into the filesystem check.

I cannot select sync for contacts. I had a previous issue which suggested I reset sync history and now I can't select an email account or where to sync contacts. I check the checkbox but no email accounts are present to select. My iPhone4 has all the contacts & mail account and runs ok.
Part of the solution to the previous problem was to delete (really I moved it) the contents of the backup folder. Now I get this message "iTunes was unable to load data class infromation from Sync Services". I moved the folders and files back and it did not help.An alternate email isn't a rescue email, and it isn't possible to add an actual rescue email without correctly answering two of the questions. If you're desperate enough, create a new Apple ID; you won't be able to transfer previous purchases or iTunes Store credit to it.

When I open newsstand it only stays open for 1 second then shuts down. This started happening after I upgraded to 6.0. Any suggestions for how to fix this?
Try quitting Newsstand completely - double tap home button, delete it from the multitasking shelf - then launch it again.

I continue to receive message that "We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred (4002). Please try again later." This has been happening every time iTunes Match runs in background. Any suggestions for a cure?

Hi All,
I had this problem today myself, and was frustrated repeatedly by the '4002' error.
I have literally just fixed the issue by doing the following steps:
1: Go to the 'Store' tab and select 'Turn Off iTunes Match'
2: Return to the 'Store' tab and select 'Update Genius'
3: Wait for this to complete succesfully, the return to the 'Store' tab once more and select 'Turn On iTunes Match'.
4: iTunes Match will now go through the motions and should succeed!
