ABAP or BI for a report?

Dear All,
I've compiled a list below of what to look for when a consultant needs to decide whether to have a report created in SAP BI (as opposed to ABAP/Report Painter in R3).
The list also includes points that can motivate a company to purchase a BI system/any data warehouse.
I would really be grateful if anyone out there can add to this (or correct it if I've been mistaken).
Also it would be very useful to know what kind of reports one should not do in BI - any learnings from project experiences are welcome!
LIST:
A company can consider buying a data warehousing solution based on:
1. Size of the company - Do they really need a data warehouse; consider R.O.I.
2. No. of Power Users - Are there enough that will make use of analytical reports?
3. Are they concerned about the strain on R3 that source system reporting will cause?
4. Do they need to analyse historical data? / Data Mining
A report is best done in BI if:
1. It is an analytical report that uses OLAP operations (e.g. drill down, slice and dice etc.) so ABAP or Report Painter will not do.
2. The report involves What-If Analysis
3. Graphs, Charts are very useful to the report-user
4. Historical data or trend analysis is expected / Data Mining
5. The report does not carry textual information (e.g. not master data texts but textual data beyond this)
6. If the report needs data brought in from multiple Source Systems (SAP, non-SAP)
7. The report is not frequently changed

Many points you have already covered, but to explain few of them.
6. If the report needs data brought in from multiple Source Systems (SAP, non-SAP)
    Here you can get actual data from ECC system and update you budget or targets from flat file. That will provide good analysis of actual Vs targets. this may not be very simple in ECC reporting.
    Multiple source system like ECC, Flat File, Oracle, SRM, CRM. When business is using all these system, only way to get reporting is from BI without troubling other system servers.
3. Graphs, Charts are very useful to the report-user
    While reporting actual vs targets, graph and charts provides very presentable reports. Not possible in ECC.
You can create Dashboards in BI where you can have charts and data together and options of publishing such dashboards directly to Emails of specific users. No need to even execute reports, they will have reports/dashboard in their mail box everyday/weekly..

      As mishbah told you , that there is no hard and fast rule for reporting throught  webdynpro.It all depends on client requirement .Now if you want to develope alll the reports by using webdynpro without your clients request , then you need to explain the advantages of webdynpro reporting above abap reporting.
    for e.g.  Webdynpro reports can run on browser, They can be posted on portal, Easy handling and maintenance and reusability.
    Other than this i guess if you can show some business profit to the client, then i think every client would like to go for webdynpro reporting.

    Hi Gopal,
      There is no concept of Variant in Webdynpro ABAP. But in our project we have some tool to do that. Its not release to the client I think. In my scenarieo, We create the Screen variant and program name will be supplied to the tool that will generate the ouput in PDF and Selection screen in One view. But the same is not avilable .
    If you want the same concept in Webdynpro ABAP, you need to go for Dynamic programming only. This is the only option is avilable.

    web ui.In our project web ui application crm version 7.0.there reports links are available
    with label of business names.
    I assume that there will be SPRO configuration for these reports.

    Which reports you are referring to? Are you referring to BI reports? If so then i suppose they are triggerred in BI and transferred to CRM.

  • OO Design--do ABAP Persistent Classes make sense for ALV reports in NW2004?

    Hello experts,
    At our company, we started using ABAP OO in the last year.
    I am on NW-2004 .  We just acquired a business that is on 4.6C.
    We have a lot of customization to bring into our system. There are a lot of reports with common queries that span multiple tables.
    I would like to follow the best practice for OO design and create global classes for the data access layer  the business logic layer and the UI layer.  For the UI layer, I will be utilizing the SALV class, since NW2004 doesn't have ABAP WebDynpro (we don't have a java stack available for development and software change management).
    For the data access layer,  I would like to use the persistent classes,  but without the query manager, it just doesn't make sense.
    Thomas Jung said in a blog that he sometimes used SQL to get the keys and then used persistent classes to retrieve the remaining data.  But for straight ALV reporting, that just seems inefficient.  But it could be that I am just not familiar enough with the technology.
    I am looking for suggestions on how to design the data access layer for these intense  and commonly used queries.
    (Ironically, we will upgrade to NW2004s after this migration -- ouch!)

    Hi Kimberly,
    the main advantage of persistent objects is that their state can be saved in the database. If a persistent object changes in your program, these changes can be reflected in the corresponding database field(s). Thus, persistent objects are very useful when doing CRUD (create, read, update and delete) operations with business objects.
    However, if you just want to read data (for simple reporting) but do not plan to implement any of the other CRUD operations, I doubt if a persistency layer is necessary since this causes extra effort during design time and runtime. In that case, simple SELECT statements seem to be more appropriate.

  • Abap users autorization for BO BI reports (made in Design Studio) on HANA data

    Hello!
    We are bit new to BO BI and Design Studio. Cauld you help us?
    BO BI reports must represent SAP HANA data.
    We have a lot of users in ERP with their roles.
    We need accordingly restrict users access  to certain values for group of users in given Data Source based on HANA Analytic or Calculation View.
    For example, report must display only “A” Plant data for first group of users, for second group – only “B” Plant data.
    Where should we mantain users (and give them roles) and what authorization use?
    The best way for mantaining users is CUA on ERP for us.
    BO BI supports SAP authorization and role mapping with it's own user groups with no probler.
    But what about HANA? We didn't find any positive information about roles mapping and authorization in HANA.
    It looks like we need to create all users and give them roles in HANA... Is it really so? How to synchronize HANA users and their authorization with ERP after this...

  • How to Save Multiple Variants for a Report at a time?

    Hi Experts,
    I have a report in one server and I have copied the same into another server.
    And now I also have to copy the variants of that report.
    There are totally 192 variants for the report. So, is there any easier way to copy all those variants for the new report that I have created, rather than re-creating the variants one-by-one manually.
    Note:There is no connection to both the servers. So I cannot transport them.

    Basis can do a export and import transport, still if don't have connection between boxes.

    The ALV is a set of function modules and classes and their methods which are added to program code. Developers can use the functionality of the ALV in creating new reports,  saving time which might otherwise have been spent on report enhancement
    The common features of report are column    alignment, sorting, filtering, subtotals, totals etc. <b>To implement these, a lot of coding and logic is to be put. To avoid that we can use a concept called ABAP List Viewer (ALV).</b>
    Using ALV, we can have three types of reports:
       1. Simple Report
       2. Block Report
       3. Hierarchical Sequential Report

  • Error during Variant Creation for a report

    hi,
    i'm trying to schedule a background job for the report MEREP_DISTRIBUTOR. it requires me to create a variant. i go to SA38 Transaction and try creating a variant.

       I am writing a HR report. And I use the logical database PNP. Also I create a HR report category for this report. In the report category, I can define the selection screen field. But all these fields are selection option format. My question is How can I add parameters, radiobutton group and checkbox in the selection screen. Thanks.

    Sorry, I put it like this, because direct link doens't let me post the answer. Don't know why.
    It can also be something with your custom code in selection screen. Though it works fine for, try to remove COMMENTs and observe the result. Maybe parameters are overlapping somehow. First try this:
    SELECTION-SCREEN begin of BLOCK blk2 WITH FRAME TITLE text-002.
    PARAMETERS RefDate type DATS.
    parameter BFlag type c RADIOBUTTON GROUP grp1.
    PARAMETER FFlag type c RADIOBUTTON GROUP grp1.

    selection-SCREEN end of BLOCK blk2.
    If that works together with the report category, try to extend it with adding a selection-screen comment, but do this in reversed order (comment goes first and FOR FIELD addition is supplied) like this:

    PARAMETERS RefDate type DATS.
    SELECTION-SCREEN begin of line.

    If still not working, see if text-003 and text-004 are not too long (you expect them to be 10 chars), This may somehow affect selection screen.
    You may also try with setting cursor position explicity by:
    SELECTION-SCREEN begin of line.
    SELECTION-SCREEN POSITION 3.
    SELECTION-SCREEN COMMENT (10) text-003 for field bflag. 
    parameter BFlag type c RADIOBUTTON GROUP grp1.
    SELECTION-SCREEN POSITION 16.
    SELECTION-SCREEN COMMENT (10) text-004 for FIELD fflag.  "here two
    PARAMETER FFlag type c RADIOBUTTON GROUP grp1.
    SELECTION-SCREEN end of line.
    It is really hard to identify where can be a bug as it is working fine for me. Keep trying with different variations, it should finally run with some.

  • Create authorization check for a report

    Hi,
    I need to create an authorization check for a report. It means that I need to restrict the usage of the report to couple of users ( 'USER1' and 'USER2' ). How can I do that? I did read through a lot of threads regarding this piece got a bit confused and stuck while creating the authorization object.
    Say the report name is ZHR_TIMEABC.
    Can anyone explain how to create an authorization object and how are they tied to the object and call them in the abap code?

    Thanks. Here is my understanding, S_C_FUNCT calls a system generated function module to make an authority check. So, if different users say USER1 and USER2 have different authroization levels, defined in their user profile, just adding this piece code will take care of authroization check for the program OR do I need to take care of something else?
    If so, when do we need to create the authorization objects using SU20 and assign the group and follo this process? When do we use this approach ( lot of threads on authority check have mentioned this procedure)?
    Your inputs will be helpful to understand this concept.

  • Start Workflow for Smartform report

    My ABAP program creates a Smartform report that I am able to send to the SAP Business Workplace inbox documents folder.  In development, I'm sending it to myself, but in production the report will be sent to a particular user.
    I need to send the report as a pdf attachment to a workflow item so that the workflow log can track the fact that the user accepts (or rejects) the report details (audit requirement).
    What workflow object type and event should be used in the workflow, and how do I start the workflow after the report has been generated?
