ABAP Programming in BW - advice sought

Hello everyone,
my knowledge in ETL, Reporting etc. Now I would even like to broaden my skills in ABAP programming in BW since I already have little exposure to ABAP. I need some advice on this. I want to be specific & make myself clear here. <b>I do not want any links or websites that teach ABAP.</b> Instead I would appreciate if you could suggest what are the possibilities of implementing ABAP in BW. basically I would like to write some code and implement something small in ABAP on my company's test system thereby enhancing my knowledge in ABAP.

Goto the Tips and Tricks section in transaction SE30, there you will find small snippets of code that perform all the basic ABAP operations. I would also recommend reading up on the BEx User Exit, and Update Rule / Transformations. You can also write little snippets of ABAP in InfoPackages.
If all else fails, goto transactions SE38 and SE37 and look at existing programs and function modules in the system.
Since ABAP is the programming language used by the BW app server, your question is extremely vague, ABAP is everywhere.

Hi guys,
I know due to OS migration ABAP program changes are not mostly required.
possibly Except few things.
1-External commands check
2-File path or logical path settings check.
3-Native sql check.
Apart from this is there any possible that OS specific settings would be used in ABAP programs. I want to find out those things in advance.
Could somebody shed light on this..
In my case Os is unix to solaris 11. so just want to know if any specific things has to be checked or taken care after OS migration.

Just to add, that external progs. could be used in jobs as well, and can be called directly from ABAP.

What happened?
    Error in the ABAP Application Program
    The current ABAP program "CL_BSP_WD_REPOSITORY==========CP" had to be
     terminated because it has    come across a statement that unfortunately cannot be executed.
Error analysis
    An attempt was made to insert an entry into table
     "\CLASS=CL_BSP_WD_REPOSITORY\METHOD=CREATE_INSTANCE_FROM_XML\DATA=LT_VIEWS".
     Updating
    unique table key "PRIMARY_KEY" resulted in a duplicate entry however. The key
     in
    question could be either the primary key or a secondary key.
    The key components of the duplicate entry have the values "{BP_A;X}" " " " "
    With primary keys, termination can occur during block insert
    operations. The can affect numerious statements, for example
    (1) MOVE
    (2) INSERT/APPEND ... LINES OF ... INTO/TO
    (3) SELECT ... INTO/APPENDING ...
    With secondary keys, termination can also occur due to a single record
    insert operation. In particular, the following modifying statements can
    cause the system to terminate due to duplicate key values as soon as
    the key is used again (delayed update):

Can you please deactivate your enhancement via setting user parameter WCF_IGNORE_ENHANCEMT =A using transaction code SU3? Then retest the issue? If it's works, then the error is happening due to your enhancement.
If the error persist please check if note 1941320 can be applied in your system.

Hey Experts , how can one analyze the performance of ABAP programs apart from using the generic tools such as Trace etc.

The runtime analysis tool allows you to examine the performance of any ABAP programs, such as reports, subroutines, function modules or classes, that you create in the ABAP workbench. It saves its results in performance data files, which you can display as lists. You can use these results to identify runtime-intensive statements, to combine table accesses, and show the hierarchy of program calls.
Normally you use the runtime analysis tool to measure the runtime of complex program segments or complete transactions (if you want to measure the runtime of smaller program segments or individual ABAP statements you can use the ABAP statement GET RUN TIME FIELD ).

Let's assume I am a very newbie in ABAP and I have written a tiny little program which is doing the following:
reading data from a database table
storing that data in an internal table
display that data on a list (at the start of the program you have to specify certain key values; only matching data should be displayed later on).
So here it comes (and it seems to work as designed ...)

A nice colleague has thrown a glance at my source code. He has given the hint to use a WHERE clause with the SELECT statement instead of the CHECK statement for reasons of better performance.
So I have written another program:
REPORT y_wlog_atra_2.

I am curious about the performance now. Let's compare the 2 variants with the ABAP Runtime Analysis tool.
ABAP Runtime Analysis: Tool & Procedure
To start it, choose Test --> Runtime Analysis in the SAP Menu, or use transaction SE30 .
The runtime analysis procedure consists of two parts:
Recording performance data (upper part of the screen)
Analyzing the performance data (lower part of the screen; this part only appears if there are performance data files in place)
The procedure for the first part (Recording performance data):
We go to the initial screen of the runtime analysis (transaction code SE30 ) and specify the name of the first program (Y_WLOG_ATRA_1) in the relevant input field. After that we press the button Execute .
The selection screen of the program Y_WLOG_ATRA_1 (including the 2 input fields) is displayed. At the bottom of the screen we are informed that the measurement has been started. We continue by clicking the Execute button.
Later on we will see that a file (containing performance data) has been created in parallel.
Now we repeat that procedure for our second program (Y_WLOG_ATRA_2).
The second step is the analysis of the generated performance data.
To do that we have to go to the initial screen of the Runtime Analysis tool again. On the bottom part of the screen you can specify those performance data files you want to analyze.
You can see some information related to the last measurement run (in our case that was program (Y_WLOG_ATRA_2). By pressing the button Other File we are able to select those performance data files we like to analyze.
I want to see all the files I have created (user BCUSER).
I get the relevant list with 2 lines (related to the performance data files of the programs Y_WLOG_ATRA_1 and Y_WLOG_ATRA_2).
Based on that list you can display the distinct performance data per line. You have to click in the column Object Type of the relevant line.
As a start the tool displays the evaluation overview (showing the cumulated execution times for the ABAP, database and system-level).
Here comes the evaluation overview for program Y_WLOG_ATRA_1
We can do the same for the other program Y_WLOG_ATRA_2
By comparing the perfomance data of the 2 programs we clearly see that I have done well with listening to the advice of my colleague. The performance of the second program is dramatically better.
In the next step you can forward to a more detailed display of the performance data (Hitlists). That listing shows the different granular execution steps ( according to your filter adjustments ). Here you can easily identify the most time-consuming progam units.
And it will also be a good idea to glance at the Tips & Tricks corner. You will find many valuable suggestions about good performance definitely.

The receiver type is the workflow you want to start, when the event occurs, of corresponding object type.
I Never had the need to develop at workflow level, but search a little in the foruns and you'll find a lot of info about this. I also advice you to open new threads when asking new questions: It's more appropriate and will bring you more answers

How do I open an ABAP program from SAP in Eclipse?

Sorry for the newbie question but I've only ever used SE80, but I saw eclipse, liked it, installed it (based on the ADT Installation guide) but now I'm stuck. How do I connect Eclipse to an SAP instance so that I can view and amend ABAP programs?

Hi Robert,
if you installed everything correct, you have to create a new ABAP-Project. This links your sap-logon with eclipse and you are able to connect to a system if everything is fine...

I understand your issue, to pickup an IDOC flat file & post it to R/3 (with or without mapping).
There is no straight forward solution but there are some ways (Normal way of Working as of now ?!!!) provided in the "How to"

Java Class - Oracle Stored Procedure - ABAP Program

My client asked me to design a Java Class that calls a Oracle stored procedure. I was a Java developer so I can do that part. Now this Java Class will be called by a ABAP program. All the data that I got from Oracle Stored Procedure should be retuned to the calling ABAP program.
In the past I did use JCA and SAP Connectors to get data from SAP R3 by calling BAPI programs.
I would like to know if the ABAP program uses JCO or the latest JCA based SAP Connectors. Any advice on how I should structure my Java Program is welcome. I do know from pure Java side how to get data from Oracle database using JDBC.

JCO is used as two way communication between JAVA and R/3. so for yours JCO may be the suitable one.

Why the sap will compile the abap program again and again?

Every one tell me that when you open some screen at the first time, the sap will compile the abap program and will not compile again at the next time.But I found actually when I open some screen at the 2th or 3th or more times,the sap will still compile the abap again.Such as open the T-CODE va01,mm01,and so on,the sap will show some message below the screen to show it was compiling the abap program.This make the operation spend me huge time.Is there any one could tell me how to resolve the problem or give me some advice?And I will appreciate him/her very much.Thank you.

It has very simple answer ... SAP code resides in database and it doesnt deliver a exe or a dll files (obj) to customer ..Now when program initially is loaded it is compiled and its linked object file is stored in SAP memory and therefore it is not compiled next time...

You create your external command with SM69 (you can test it with SM49).
Then you call this command with function module "SXPG_COMMAND_EXECUTE".
(See function group SXPT for all the calls to external commands).
