About backing up / restoring Arch

Hi ,
My Arch X86_64 is installed onto a SSD, it's about 3 years old and I'm just moved to the mix systemd / sysV
My purpose is to refresh the perf of the SSD with a secure erase (hdparm), however I don't feel like reinstalling the whole Arch.
So I'm thinking about 2 solutions :
1- tar of the whole root fs; refresh SSD ; untar the root fs (included /etc)
2- tar /etc "only" ; brand new Arch install ;  untar /etc
( btw, /home is on another HDD )
3- a better way to save and restore all my Arch parameters ?
Thanks for you advices.

I can recommend rsync aswell. I have not had to recover from my backup yet but creating it was very easy.  First I tried to back it up to my 1 TB NTFS drive but to no surprise it wasn't able to handle sym links if you just write the files to the partition not into a raw container. What works though if you have a small drive for your system (mine is 128 GB (Arch + Win7) and a big drive you can dd a zipped image of the system drive onto your NTFS drive from within the Live CD/USB enviroment.
Today I recieved an external case for 2.5" hard drives and installed my old laptop hdd (120GB) into it which I replaced with a 64 GB SSD about a year ago. Formated it with ext4 and now it holds the root dir of both my Arch PCs + both drive images. I use about 7 GB of my 64 GB and the zipped dd image came out at 5.1 GB while "dd if=/dev/sda of=/externaldrivemount/backup.img" would have resulted in a 64 GB file.
Appreciate your advices
I'm not familiar with rsync but it looks like a way to handle my backup
I did once a plain backup using tar (none compress) starting from root + usr + lib + home + etc and even dev, excluding off course proc sys. The resulting big tar file was stored into HDD
Then I did a secure erase the SSD with Arch boot CD, with which I also re-parted aligned FS of the SSD
I then just had to untar backup from the mounted HDD
This has worked like a charm especially with a SSD with which I don't think it is good to use any dd command
However, taking into consideration the Time it requires to backup / restore vs install Arch from scratch with brand new features WELL installed. ie Systemd : I wonder if having just a tiny etc directory and some others parameters are not enough ?

if I back up my iphone/ipad to my computer, then delete a file (say, a picture) from my iphone/ipad, then back up the iphone/ipad again, will the previously deleted file still be backed up, or will it be gone?

The iphone backup that itunes performs does not include photos or itunes content.  You should be including this content in your regular backup of your computer files/docs/pics/music/etc.

  • Back up & restore issue after updating to 4.3

Before updating my SP from 4.1 to JB 4.3 I made a backup using tool "Back up & restore" on SD card. But now after updating to JB 4.3  I'm unable to restore that backup. It says "Cannot restore, Selected backup records cannot be used due to incompatible software versions. Please select a more recent backup file".Is there any way resolve this? I need to restore my old Contacts, I don't care about rest of the data.

It's unvelibable! If Sony provides a Backup & Restore tool, it is intended to do exactly as expected: backups that can be restored.
I made backups to be sure all my valueable data is not lost. Now my mobile has been stolen :-(Don't worry, I think, I have a backup of all important data.Nooo!! Say Sony's tool: you have a different version of Android now, so you CAN NOT restore any data. And say: updates the old phone (the stolen one), and make a NEW backup. Ok, it is not admisible! You must provide a tool that can restore data without (impossible) conditions. This is not a tool, this is a secure way of throw away all of your important data!! I'm very angry! This contacts are not my friends, are business contacts and I'm loosing money because of that  >:-(

You have to restore the device within iTunes. You want to use the same computer that you always sync with so that you can restore your app data and settings. You can restore with any other computer, but you will lose everything on the iPod.
Take special note of the article about using recovery mode. Many times, that is the only way to bypass the pass code and restore the device.

If you cannot restore that way, you may have to use recovery mode.

  • Few Questions About Backing Up Files

Okay, I'm pretty new to this, and have checked the support pages, but I do have some questions about backing up my files.
I'm running out of room on my computer's hard drive, and am wondering if burning the library to CDs will allow me to quickly restore my library on my computer when I sync my iPod.
I know that when an iPod syncs with a comp, it will lose any songs that aren't on the library list. (If I deleted some songs to free up room, I'd lose those songs on my iPod when I synced it up.) Is there a way to prevent that from happening? Some way to save a headache continuously restoring my iPod's library every time I want to add a new song or recharge it?
I'm on Windows XP, if that matters.

Best and easiest solution is to buy an external hard drive. Then simply drag and drop your iTunes folder from your internal onto the external and copy the entire library.

  • About what is restored in an app

So today I accidentally clicked on a link on FB that has malware (I know the site already and know that it's dangerous) I immediately pressed on the back button on the left of the top screen and then went back to my home page on FB. I heard that files are restored in apps, sandbox thing. So the address of the site and the files in it are restored in my Facebook app? What to do?

    Malma63 wrote:
But what about wht is restored in the app?
I'm sorry, that question does not make sense.
If it restores the links that I click on too, then the malware is inside the app?
There is no malware that can affect an iOS device that has not been jailbroken.

    thanks!

The wish list only works on apps you have to pay for. To get it tap the icon of the app you want to save. After it opens at the upper right corner is a box with a arrow. Tap that then tap add to wish list list in the box that opens.

  • Multiple iphones each with an apple id - can i use the same laptop and itunes for back up, restore and updates?

We have two iphones each with a different apple id - can i use the same laptop and itunes for back up, restore and updates without risking having my apps overwritten.  Basically does itunes keep the two iphones as two separate entities ?  Does iTunes differentiate between the two devices and keep two different SYNCs ?

Yes, you can use the same computer for BACK UPS, RESTORING AND UPDATING. But that is it.
You cannot, however, use it to sync the different devices. iTunes will only recognize one device to sync with and if you sync any other devices with that iTunes library, it will replace what is on the phone with whatever is in the library. It cannot differentiate between devices. At most, it will jsut recognize that the phone has been synced with a different iTunes library.
So if you would like to use the same computer for backing up, restoring and updating, just make sure to turn of Automatic Syncing in your iTunes Preferences.

  • How do I restore the back up from my old iPhone 5 which is IOS 8.1.3 to my new iPhone 6 which is IOS 8? It's not coming up as an available back up restore option?

How do I restore the back up from my old iPhone 5 which is IOS 8.1.3 to my new iPhone 6 which is IOS 8? It's not coming up as an available back up restore option? Am I able to set up as a new iPhone and then update the new phone to IOS 8.1.3 and then restore from my old iPhone 5 back up at that stage?

Setup your new phone, then update to iOS 8.1.3. Once done: Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings". At the setup screen you'll now be able to select your old phone's backup.

When I am restoring backup data for my iPhone 4 in the end of back up restore it show error message " back up can't be restored" , please advice what I can do to restore my backup

That usually means that there is something wrong with the backup and it cannot be used.  You can try restoring the backup again, but if you continue to get the same message all you can do is restore to a different backup, if you have one.

  • Question about backing up MBP

I purchased my MBP back in August of 2009 and it has been virtually flawless since I have bought it. However I have downloaded all kinds of stuff to it and added all kinds of different things to it, I have a pretty large music library and what I would like to do is just back up everything to my external hard drive and wipe the computer clean and start over from scratch.
This is my first Mac and I was curious what the best way to do this would be?  Also is it like Windows where it will take hours upon hours to reformat the hard drive etc... Anyone who could suggest how to do this or provide a link with step by step instructions I would greatly appreciate anyone who could help me out with this!!!!

You should go out and get a new, now very inexpensive, external hard drive. Preferrably Firewire, but USB2 is ok if you need to save some money.
Use OS X built in TimeMachine. If you choose to go this route, here is Apple's instructions for setting up the new TimeMachine disk, backing up, restoring, etc:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
Also, I would highly suggest in addition to Time Machine that you also backup your Home (user) folder to the external disk you already have. This will help save you in case your new drive has any problem at least your data will be safe.

  • If I backed up with a newer version of iOS than the phone I am trying to backup to.. Is there any way to bypass the setup assistant in order to download the new iOS on the new phone then go back and restore from my old phone?

if I backed up with a newer version of iOS than the phone I am trying to backup to.. Is there any way to bypass the setup assistant in order to download the new iOS on the new phone then go back and restore from my old phone?

Try deleting your last backup by turning off iCloud Backup in Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup, then tap Manage Storage, swipe across your backup and tap Delete, then go back and turn iCloud Backup back on again.  If it still won't back up, you may have an app that is preventing the backup from succeeding.  To locate which one, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, tap the name of your device under Backups, under Backup Options tap Show All Apps, then turn them all to Off (including camera roll) and try backing up again.  If it succeeds, then the camera roll and/or one of your apps is preventing the backup and you'll have to located by process of elimination. Turn the camera roll On and try backing up again.  If it succeeds, turn some of your apps to On and try backing up again.  If it succeeds again, turn some more apps to On then try again; repeat this process until it fails.  Eventually you'll be able to locate the problem app and exclude it from your backup.
