About Disk Load

Hi,
I am confused about disk load. When I use Solaris management console to see disk use I see that there is average 600Kb/sec on disk. But disk busy time is almost %100.
I know that the io capacity of a disk must be much larger 600kb/sec. So I dont understand why disk usage is 100% when io is only 600Kb.
My cpu shows about 50 % wait time and I gues wait time is due to disks.
We have 4 disks with RAID 5.
2 Sparc with 8GB ram. 20 GB swap. 64 bit environment
Any help will be useful
Thanks in advance
Sezai

the%busy time is not what you expect! It is the percentage of the sample time for which there was at least one command active in the HBA.
If you use iostat -xnz 1 to use 1 second sample interval and you see a drive with 100 % busy then that just means that there was at least 1 active command out in the HBA/disk for 100% of that second. Modern disk drives can execute more than 1 command at a time so you can't use the %busy column to determine how busy a disk drive is. You can look at the actv column to see how many commands are running in parallel on that drive.
Solaris implements a throttle for each drive and when you exceed that you will see commands appear in the wait column and that is bad..
The % busy column is used to identify when you have bursty workloads that drop large numbers of commands on the disk drive at the same time and then queueing theory kicks in.
Make sure you don't have anything in the wait column of iostat -xnz 1 and watch the asvc_t doesn't get too big.

  • Old disk-loading iMac upgrade from 8.6 to 9.2.2?

    Hello everyone,
I have an ancient Bondi Blue iMac (disk-loading) with OS 8.6. I would like to upgrade it to Mac OS 9. I can buy OS 9 from Fastmac.com for $30, but they are sold out of the OS 9.0 CD.
My question is: can I buy the 9.2.2 CD full install instead? Could I upgrade directly from 8.6? Here's the site: http://store.fastmac.com/productinfo.php?productsid=101
    Thanks!
    matt

*There are no universal full installer OS 9.2.2 CDs.* You will need to purchase either a univeral full installer OS 9.1 or OS 9.2.1 CD. Then you can go to Apple's Download site & download the OS 9.2.2 upgrade for free.
You can get the above mentioned CDs from:
(I have not checked these links in awhile. Hope most still work)
Make sure you check out all of the following links as prices vary for the OS 9.x cds.
Ask the vendors the color of the CD lable. All universal full install CDs are white w/an orange/golden 9.x on it.

    http://welovemacs.com/apsyso.html

Do NOT buy a gray installation CD - those are not universal installers but model-specific [NO matter what the seller says about them!] OEM-versions have caused problems in the past when used on other computer models.

  • About disk quota in win2008r2 server(AD)

    Hi,everyone:
I have a question for help. In win2008r2 domain server, I want to set disk quota on each domain users.
In default, when a user created, it belongs to Domain Users group, and disk quota applied. But if I add the user into Domain Admins group, disk quota does not apply, so is a user as administrator role is whom disk
quota does not apply in AD?
Also I have tested in local computer, administrator account(not "Administrator"), such as "admin", could
be applied also. It seems that all users except Administrator account could be set disk quota limit. Why Domain Admins not? Thanks a lot.

    Hi,
What is the meaning about “disk quota does not apply”? Do you mean that disk quota cannot apply to users who member of administrators group? I have done a test, add a user to domain admin group, then disk quota can still apply to the user.
In additional, quota limits are not applied to the Administrators local group.

I have an iPhone 3GS that I dropped in water for a moment. After drying it and everything, it still does everything but get service. Can I back it up and transfer its data to a new iPhone 3GS? I heard something about how loading a backup from a water damaged phone could mess up the new one... is this true? I would truly appreciate the help, please let me know, thanks!

Sounds like your phone is in recovery mode.  In this case, all data on it is gone.  There's nothing to back up.

  • Question about Finder-Load-Beans flag

    Hi all,
I've read that the Finder-Load-Beans flag could yield some valuable gains in performance
    but:
    1) why is it suggested to do individual gets of methods within the same Transaction
    ? (tx-Required).
    2) this strategy is useful only for small sets of data, isn't it? I imagine I
would choose Finder-Load-Beans to false (or JDBC) for larger sets of data.
    3) A last question: its default value is true or false ?
    Thanks
    Francesco

Because if there are different transactions where the get method is called
then the state/data of the bean would most be reloaded from the database. A
new transactions causes the ejbLoad method to be invoked in the beginning
and the ejbStore at the end. That is the usual case but there are other ways
    to modify this behavior.
    Thanks

    Hi thorick,
I have found this in the newsgroup. It's from R.Woolen answering
    a question about Finder-Load-Beans flag.
    "Consider this case:
    tx.begin();
    Collection c = findAllEmployeesNamed("Rob");
    Iterator it = c.iterator();
    while (it.hasNext()) {
    Employee e = (Employee) it.next(); System.out.println("Favorite color is:"+ e.getFavColor());
    tx.commit();
With CMP (and finders-load-beans set to its default true value), thefindAllEmployeesNamed
finder will load all the employees with the name of rob. The getFavColormethods
do not hit the db because they are in the same tx, and the beans arealready loaded
    in the cache.
It's the big CMP performance advantage."
So I wonder why this performance gain can be achieved when the iterationis inside
    a transaction.
    Thanks
    regards

If you know that you will be accessing the fields of all the Beans that
    you get back from a
    finder,
then you will realize a significant performance gain. If one selects
    100s or more beans
    using
a finder, but only accesses the fields for a few, then there may be some
    performance cost.
    It could
depend on how large some of the fields are. I'd guess that the cost
of 1 hit to the DB per
    bean vs.
the cost of 1 + maybe 1 more hit to the DB per bean, would usually be
    less. A performance
    test using
your actual apps beans would be the only way to know for sure.
    3) A last question: its default value is true or false ?The default is 'True'

I'm also a JDO user. Glad to see your Chinese name!
I think you should not close the pm before any pending use of PC objects.
You may use a ThreadLocal object to get the pm in different methods
without passing the pm as an argument.

My answers to your former questions:
Lazy loading is configurable according to JDO spec, to the field-level,
and this is called Default-Fetch-Group. By default, all Collections are
    lazy-loaded.
As for the "makeTransientAll" behavior, there's some discussion on
    JDOCentral.com/forums/
I remember someone pointed out a solution for your need. While, you can
still use a ThreadLocal object to solve this problem.

    1.10) TD list (length:0) = null

If I close the pm after query the object out, and pass this object to
another method, I cannot use this object in that method because pm has
    been
closed. I try to makeTransient the object before it is passed, it doeswork.
But when I use the list field in this object(this list field has been
retrieved out in pm), the "PersistenceManager has been closed" exception
turns up again. Need I makeTransientAll every list fields ? It's awful.
If this usage is required, what the best way?

  • Error in iMovie about Disk Space after upgrade

I just upgraded to Mountain Lion. I created a movie in iMovie and when I tried to export it to YouTube, I got an error message about no disk space. I have over 700GB of space so I don't think that's the issue. I tried upgrading iMovie but it's asking for an old AppleID that no longer exists.
    So I have 2 problems:
How can I upgrade iMovie when it's asking for a non-existant Apple ID?
How can I fix the situation in the version of iMovie I'm currently running?
    PLEASE HELP!

It sounds like Time Machine is turned ON and the computer is making backups to the hard disk.  This space is freed automatically, if required by the OS.

  • About Disk Utility's secure erase options

    Hello!
I am going to format the drive to reinstall the OS, it's time for a full cleaning!
I see that I have some options to erase the disk:
    - Don't erase data
    - Zero out data
    - 7-Pass Erase
Is there any difference about the performance of the disk before the erase? I don't talk about the possibility or security of the erased data; I ask for the disk speed and smooth.
    Thank you.

Those options will have no effect on the performance of the drive.

  • What should i do about disk read errors

Using MacBookPro (Mid 2010, 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB RAM, 500 GB Hitachi drive, OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)). I use Carbon Copy Cloner as part of my backup strategy. Today it reported read error: /private/var/log/asl/2014.09.06.U0.G80.asl is on a bad section of the hard disk. 1) What is the file’s function & should I worry about recovering it? 2) Ran Disk Utility before & after Mavericks upgrade last week & after CCC report; DU reportd disk appears OK. 3) Suggestions?

The log file itself isn't vital to anything.  Most logs can safely be removed (easily using MainMenu or similar tools).   Logs are really only handy in forensics of what may be going amiss with a system, an application, or tracking user behavior.  However, the deeper issue is why that sector went bad.   Drives age -- we all know that.  But if your drive is beginning to really show some issues, it's cheaper to go ahead and replace/retire it.  Yes, reformatting after a complete bootable backup via CCC or a complete TimeMachine run is an option.  Bad sectors will be noted and written around during the reformat.  But it could also be a sign of troubled waters ahead.

  • Alert about the loading time & Restrict the number of the rows retrieved

Hi everybody, maybe the question is stupid, but I didn't find yet an answer...
    I'm using BIP 10.1.3.4.1
Because I have many reports with a huge amount of data to display (in HTML format) and customers once clicked on "View" have to wait a lot of time, they asked me if there is the possibility to do the following things:
    1. restrict the number of the rows retrieved (this for each report); this request has to be dynamic (different rows' number for each report and for each user); so, I can't modify the query into the data template in order to retrieve a fixed number of rows;
    2. show an alert who says for example " The data loading will take 5 minutes. Do you want to proceed ? YES - NO" This to inform the users how much time they have to wait if they click on Yes.
I checked under the Administrator TAB...but I didn't find nothing "native" about the two questions above.....
So, I ask you if there is a way to activate these features (if they exist "native") or a workaround to implement what I described above.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Alex

Hi Vetsrini, thanks for your answer.....but what does it mean ? There are no solutions for my requests ? I remember that Discoverer had the possibility to have an alert as I would like to have with BI Publisher and there was the possibility to choose how many rows it was required from the customer....Is it possible that with BIP is not applicable ?

  • Flash newbie questions about slow loading site

Hi all. I am new to Flash and web-site building in general and I have been learning while doing. Its fun, but frustrating. I really need some help, hope someone out there with Flash experience can give me some advice.
My problem is this: I built a Flash website, but it is painfully slow to load up (3-5 minutes via cable modem) when I visit the site (via Firefox, etc). Once it does load up, everything is fine with navigation. I'm having a hard time figuring out why its taking so long to load up on the web because, basically, I don't know how to trouble shoot. Hope you guys can help!
Details: the site is just a portfolio site with pictures and a few motion-things, no complicated animations. The swf file is about 9MB. I do have a flash preloader, but it doesn't show up until after the 3-5 minute "load-up" time. When I do the testing via Flash, its Ok and doesn't show the lag. But once I upload the website files and try to visit my website, the load time problem occurs.
    My thoughts:
    - do I have to purge my Flash file/library of unused images before creating my swf file?
    - Is there a problem with my html code in my index file?
    - because it is a portfolio site, I've got about 90 images on it, each image about 300-400K.  Is this too big, or about right?
Please help! Sorry for the long email, just desperate for help. Thanks in advance for any advise!!!! Just in case, here is the html code:

Yeah I'm with Ned on this one. Dynamically loading your images is the way to go. The fact that you are new to Flash, try this tutorial (http://www.entheosweb.com/Flash/loading_external_images.asp). As you move along in learning Flash, look for tutorials on actionscript arrays and loading images dynamically. Arrays allow you to call each images from a folder outside your fla. That way your site moves right along without much loading time.

  • IDVD complaining about disk space (wants about 23458723094587235723945 GB)

In a school lab situation, we have iMacs set up with Tiger server. Students log into server and have a quota of disk space for their working environment - I think it's 100 GB.
They're creating short iMovie projects (about 2 - 4 minutes) and are required to submit them to their teachers on DVD.
More often than not, when a student chooses the Share -> iDVD option, iDVD refuses to burn the DVD claiming that there's not enough room to build the disc. It says the disc will require several quintillion gigabytes (give or take) to render.
Idunno... this is only a two or three minute video. I kinda doubt that's true!

    Hi
Most probably a pro issue - But I share my amateur thoughts (may be do not apply
    on Server/Net-work systems)
    iDVD
Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named: com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
