About Dita feature for Framemaker 10?

Hi guys,
I am considering to purchase the ATCS 3.0 to meet my customer's new request. As I am a fresh man to the Framemaker and other Adobe products, some bellow questions might be stupid:)
1. I could not find the Dita menu in the menubar in the trial version for Framemaker 10. And the import menu item is also unvailable. But they were there in the demonstration video. I am not sure if it is an complimentary feature. Please refer to the attached image.
2. The second quetion is about Dita to PDF and Webhelp. Our customer handoff the Dita source file without any style file fot the output. The only thing I got is the previous output PDF or Webhelp and they just want to leverage the style. Could anybody be so kind to provide some suggestions about how to generate a style template file according to these generated output files? My understanding is that it takes much time if we want to write a template file one by one to meet the output format requirements.
3. The third question is about how to convert the FM files in lower version like FM8 or lower into Dita files. My understanding is the Dita files are XML-based content without style. So the key point here is how to seperate the FM files to Dita and some other style-control files.
Appreciate all of your help in advance!

1.
The Import menu is only available if a document is already open. To import in the sense of opening documents in foreign formats, use File > Open, and set the filter to "All files". When you open a file, you'll be prompted to select a filter for import.
FM comes in two flavours, "FrameMaker" and "Structured FrameMaker". The DITA menu is only available in Structured FrameMaker. You can switch to Structured FrameMaker in File > Preferences > Interface.
2.
From what you wrote, it appears that your customer has already published some DITA content. Do they really need another publishing solution, or do they just want their existing FM documents to be converted to DITA?
If you want to publish with FrameMaker, there's no alternative to creating a template and structure-based formatting rules.
3.
You can set up a conversion table. A conversion table assists you in converting formatted text and frames based on their format tags to structure elements. The better your conversion table matches your format-based document structure, the less manual cleanup work will remain.
However, conversion already requires a structure application, i.e. an EDD (kind of a DTD counterpart in FrameMaker) and a template. You can use the DITA structure application that comes with FrameMaker. Depending on your requirements, you may have to customize the EDD and read/write rules of the structure application. The template shouldn't matter unless you want to use FrameMaker to publish DITA XML.

  • Questions about divulging information about future features

    Good morning,
I'm making my way through this thread for the first time.
As someone who has passed the California Bar and who has been a stockbroker in the past, I would like to comment on the statement of Steve Forde, who was the Senior Product Manager for Visual Effects for Adobe for portions of 2011.
    Steve said,
"Unfortunately - we get stuck in a legal pinch about commenting on ANYTHING that may or may not be in future products, off the record or otherwise."
I'm asking that you consult your internal SENIOR legal counsel again regarding this statement that you assert prohibits you from giving any details whatsoever about what the Adobe Team may or may not aspire to having in future versions of After Effects.
I'm asking this of you for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, no attorney denies that the law changes over time and recent court decisions have made shareholder derivative lawsuits much less popular as a way for the plaintiff's bar to make a quick buck by extorting money from companies who may have made aspirational statements to shareholders or others in conference calls or elsewhere.
As I understand the current trends in Delaware Law, (which, as the situs for quite a few corporations governs large swaths of their conduct) as long as appropriate disclaimers are clearly communicated at the time of the aspirational statement, such language is now permissible.
Such standard disclaimers could include language such as
"we cannot guarantee whether any feature discussed will appear within one year or within five years or whether it will ever appear at all.  It is currently a goal of the design team to reintroduce this feature, but we reserve the right, in our exclusive discretion to change that decision for any reason whatsoever, without consequence.
Additionally, you are vested with no rights to rely on any assertion or representation made based on any such aspirational statement and we insist and demand you consult an attorney before embarking on any course of conduct, such as purchasing stock or altering any current or projected business plan, based in any manner upon what we say here.
However, given the above caveats, it is the current goal of the Adobe design team to reintroduce this feature within the next three releases of AE again, subject to change at our sole and exclusive direction in any manner, time or mode of our choosing, without prior notice of any kind."
If you had a standard disclaimer such as the above that you attached to any and all such statements (by having it appear within the signature block of any Adobe employee posting to this forum), it could take conversations such as this to a more rewarding level for both Adobe staff (who could share their very profound dreams and aspirations with us) and the Adobe community at large, which provides inspiration and helpful feedback to Adobe employees seeking to assist us.
Then the focus could shift to whether or not you were divulging trade secrets.  But it would still permit you to be more informative in a general way.
So I ask that you run this by your SENIOR legal counsel again.   Remember, just as there can be different ways to tackle the same 3D graphics animation challenge, each with rewarding results, attorneys similarly can vary from attorney to attorney and new and bright ideas on how to approach such issues do occur from time to time, especially in light of the massive favorable swings in case law supporting the rights of massive global corporations such as Adobe viz a viz the rights of the little guy.
    Sincerely, Matt Dubuque
Here is Steve's quote in its entirety, from May 26, 2011:
Unfortunately - we get stuck in a legal pinch about commenting on ANYTHING that may or may not be in future products, off the record or otherwise.
That being said, as Michael explained in a previous post, Vector Paint got stuck in the conversion of AE to 64 bit.  It's something we hear quite a bit from our users that Vector Paint is important.  Again - wish I could give you more than that, but we are bound by very strict rules.
Therefore - it is important to us, and the more we hear via this form the more likely it is to get resources behind it in a future release. Again I realize it is impersonal, but the results of this form are sent via email to a real human every time someone hits submit; then that person brings the results of submission to a weekly meeting on the AE team where we discuss features and scheduling.
    Steve
Sr. Product Manager - Visual Effects
    Adobe Systems Inc.

Attaching an appropriate disclaimer may be fine for an attorney to dot all the i's and cross all the t's, but there is one thing it will NOT do: it won't stop people from misinterpreting what they read.
Most people go by what they PERCEIVE to be true and not the ACTUAL truth, a fact that people in marketing like me deal with all the time.
Steve Forde might write the following totally hypothetical and totally fictional line in a blog:
"We're thinking about a feature for a future version.  Right now we call it the Clean Plate Generator.  You would be able to shoot a single clip, panning and tilting the camera as desired, and After Effects would automatically create an image whose total size matches the totality of the image shot in the clip.  It would even remove selected foreground subjects such as a stray person who inadvertantly walks into the shot."
Sounds great, yes?  And with your proposed disclaimer, all would be good; Adobe would have covered its corporate pink posterior.  Or would it?
Do you wish to speculate how many people would read that as a statement of a definitely-going-to-be-there feature in the next AE version?
Can you imagine the can of worms that would open when this fictional feature isn't in the next version?
Would it really be worth the massive and expensive fence-mending campaign Adobe would have to undertake among angry users who were erroneously looking forward to this fictional feature?
All of which could have been avoided simply by not saying a word?
I can see where attorneys may like a hypothetical situation as the one above: they could charge more billable hours!  I doubt Adobe would like it, however.
Legalese is one thing, maintaining happy customers is another, and there is no amount of legalese that can overcome people's nasty tendancy to perceive what they read as what they WANT to read instead of what is actually written.
If people would read what was actually written, there would be far fewer posts in this forum that say in essence, "Hey, how come it takes two weeks to render ray tracing on the brand-new HP student laptop  I just got from Wal-Mart?"

  • Where are FrameMaker 10 video tutorials on XML and DITA features?

Salutations, everyone!  Besides YouTube, what video-based training/tutorial resources do you suggest for a 1-year FM10 and XML/DTD user?  I bought FM10 for my personal laptop about 1 year ago, and I have also been learning at the same time all about XML and DTDs within the Oxygen XML suite ( integrated development environment).  I love it!  But now that I'm a "seasoned beginner", I would like to transition to working with XML/DITA and become proficient with structured docs in FM10.  I want to increase my rate of learning, particularly during the next two months.
    Cheers!

  • What is the right CMS for FrameMaker 11 and DITA?

    Hello,
I am looking for a good CMS for FrameMaker 11. I already tried componize for Alfresco, but it does not solve our problems. Some important requirements are:
    - comfortable editor which can be easily used by authors without XML/DITA/FrameMaker-knowledge
    - creating DITA-imagemaps (CMS editor)
    - creating DITA-templates without special knowledge or using FrameMaker-templates without problems
In componize it was possible to download DITA-maps and open them in FrameMaker. But I don`t know how to format a whole DITA-map in FrameMaker - is it possible? Because it wouldn´t be very comfortable to format every single topic by using an EDD..
Another idea was to import the whole DITA-map to RoboHelp for formatting, but it didn`t work because of a missing DITA Open Toolkit-Folder? I did download DITA Open Toolkit, but I was not able to install it. Why do I need this for RoboHelp and not for FrameMaker?
And for the templates: is there an easy way to create FrameMaker-DITA-templates? I read a lot about EDDs, R/W-rules and DTDs but it seems to be very complicated for non-experts to create all these different documents. And there are less help documents like demonstration videos to learn it on my own.
For me it seems to be like "before you are able to work with RoboHelp-FrameMaker-Templates-Outputs-CMS, learn a lot of programming languages and become an IT-specialist." - so very complicated, not comfortable, not intuitively.
A lot of questions, maybe some of you have some good ideas and solutions! Thanks

A CMS (content management system) is used for storing, retrieving, and managing files. Some CMS products are specialized for DITA. But they don't usually come with the ability to create and edit maps and topics. For that, you need a DITA editor. FrameMaker is a pretty good DITA editor (especially with the DITA-FMx plugin from Leximation).
DITA maps don't need formatting.  They're simply organized collections of DITA topics. The topics do need formatting in order to deliver outputs.  FrameMaker can format them for print or PDF output, and is exceptionally good for this purpose. It can't directly format DITA for other outputs. For this, FrameMaker and many other products rely on the DITA-OT, which can format DITA for many outputs, such as CHM, Eclipse, or JavaHelp (and also PDF, but without the same power as FrameMaker).
To format the topics for page output, FrameMaker uses an EDD.  All DITA topics are formatted using the same EDD, and Frame does this "behind the scenes"  so you usually don't have to worry about it (although you can make custom adjustments to the EDD if you want).
If you are using DITA, it's a good idea to install the DITA-OT and get it working with other products. There's a Yahoo group called dita-users where you can get help with this.
As an alternative to the DITA-OT, you might want to look at DITA2Go or DITA4Publishers.

It sounds as if you only had one line with an upgrade available. So you can only upgrade one line. For you to upgrade as well, you will have to wait until your upgrade is available. You can check that at MyVerizon. That's just how it works. All carriers and phone brands are the same. I have to wait until February to upgrade. The only thing you can do to get the new iPhone, is add a new line. But then you're paying for a line you don't need.

  • Selecting DITA domains in FrameMaker 8

I have looked for ways to select the appropriate DITA domains in FrameMaker 8 but have not found anything in the Help or on the online Adobe resources. In other editors, I can select domains (or rather, suppress some of them) so that my list of applicable elements is filtered to what is useful in my context.
Does anybody know whether this feature of suppressing domains is available at all in FM 8 ?
    Thanks for any advice.
    Jang

    Hi Jang...
With FM, the content model is defined by the EDD (and DTD) of the selected structure application. For ease of use, the default DITA Topic structure application is based on the ditabase.dtd which includes all of the DITA domains. If you want to strictly focus on a specific domain (set of elements), you'd need to develop your own structure application that is based on the model you want to work with. If you do this, then you switch between these domains by selecting the associated structure application when opening a file.
Note that with DITA, the Topic, Map, and Book structure applications are also set in the DITA Options dialog. These apps are used when FM opens a DITA file through the course of automatically resolving a reference (topicref, conref, xref) since there is no opportunity to manually select the application to use. If you do develop domain-specific apps, you'll probably have a bit of extra work because you'll need to change these apps in Options as well.
If you just want to reduce the number of elements (or eliminate specific domains from the "Topic" content model), you can modify the EDD to eliminate these elements. This will make it so these elements are not exposed as being available when authoring in FM. If you do make modifications to the default EDD (or other application files) it is strongly recommended that you clone the apps to create new application names of your own. This way, *when* you mess something up (and you will .. we all do) you'll be able to refer back to a fully functional app.
    Cheers,

  • Revive RoboHelp for FrameMaker

I am interested in knowing how many people out there remember
RoboHelp for FrameMaker (RHF) and how many are interested in
reviving it. It was an excellent, easy-to-use extension of RoboHelp
that made it really easy to publish FrameMaker in a number of
on-line help formats. It was abruptly forced to EOL when Macromedia
bought eHelp. Its users/supporters made a valiant effort to save
it, but it was so new there wasn't a huge user base yet and it
never got the chance to develop the following it would have. It was
the easiest way to create full-featured on-line help systems that
has yet been devised, and I would like to open a dialog about
    reviving it.
Now that Adobe Systems has acquired Macromedia, it makes
sense to revisit the issue of reviving RHF.
If you are interested at all, please forward this information
    to other FrameMaker users.
    Thanks.
    [email protected]

I would be very interested in seeing RoboHelp for FrameMaker
revived. I have been trying to use RoboHelp Office X5 with my
FrameMaker user guide for weeks and have run in to nothing but
problems. I've tried importing the .mif files, but it's
inconsistent and doesn't allow me to update the graphics. I've also
tried RoboHelp's other suggestion which is converting the
FrameMaker documents to Word documents first. I was surprised that
they are encouraging use of a competitor's software (if I just
write in Word I skip a step). I'm also surprised they know their
software so little. FrameMaker has never converted to Word well and
usually blows up somewhere in the process. I've also tried finding
answers to my FrameMaker/RoboHelp questions in forums, but it seems
that there aren't too many people trying this because I haven't
found or received any answers to my questions and have hardly found
anything relating to .mif and RoboHelp.
Sorry for the rant, but I have just been very disappointed in
this process when it used to be so easy to create and maintain
    online help using FrameMaker documents.

  • How to a make a suggestion about new features i'd like to see in itunes

how to a make a suggestion about new features i'd like to see in itunes?
I can't find any link to do this. I found a page where you can request songs or an album to be added, but i can't find a page to submit my suggestions for itunes i have for new features i'd like to see

As of now there is no good, direct link for feedback on iTunes itself. Writing Apple might be the best option, with the website feedback page perhaps the next best.

  • New Features for Java GUI

    Hello everyone!
Can anybody tell about new features in SAP GUI for Java. I think It's emasculate now. It doesn't contain New ABAP editor, Network graphic, normal Screen Painter... I really enjoy adding themes and other stuff, but when these functionality will be added?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I use Java GUI from version 6.40, so i didn't know new ABAP editor for years. Once somebody shows me its features ...and I found that it is really good editor compared with previous Notepad-like frontend editor. But I have to say that customized version od Gvim used as external editor is in 90% better then new ABAP editor (the only problem is that double click on object doesn't work, but some workarounds are known for double-click on locally defined objects).
Graphical screen painter is generally good tool, but once I cannot find any feature (sorry, I forgot which one, it happens about 6 years ago). I ask a SAP guru sitting near me. He comes, switch graphical screen painter off and click to a box in non-graphical version of screen painter. Then he told me that some features are not accessible in graphical screen painter. It was last time I used graphical version of screen painter.
Themes? Works .... at least for me (Linux 32 bit and now Linux 64 bit too).
So I think that Java GUI is usable (at least on Linux/Mac, I am not sure how in works under Windows) but you cannot stick on all features (and maybe you can find better working variants of it). E. g. I have no problem with new ABAP editor, it would be much better for me, if I can open external editor clicking to "Change" button in SE38 directly instead of click plus selecting external editor from menu.

  • Are there any amazing features for people with disabilities not available in Windows?

I do volunteer work at a group in Tokyo which provides English conversation and light computer lessons for people with various kinds of disabilities on Sundays at a community center.
They want me to come in on Sundays for a few months and teach people - such as their other teachers - how to use Apple computers. And they bought all the teachers, including me, new MacBook Airs or MacBook Pros.
The thing is, these people are basically all Windows users, and they seem, somehow, to use their Windows machines just fine with varying disabilities. In particular, some portion of the group are blind. There is a Mac enthusiast who has gotten it into his mind that he wants more of his fellow members using Macs, rather than Windows, so he is behind this new project.
I know there are "accessibility features" for the Mac, though I've not really made use of them myself except for some light testing so far to see that they work.
My question is "why Mac?" I am a Mac user myself, and I enjoy using a Mac. But I think it is probably a matter of what you are used to. If these people are happy using their Windows machines I don't know of anything I can say to make them want to switch. So I'm not sure how practical or productive the entire plan is, though I'm happy to try to help out, and I enjoy working with the group.
I can certainly teach these people, who are not familiar with Macs, how to use them. I've been using Macs for years and years.
But is there anything I can say about why Mac features for people with disabilities are better than Windows features? Any examples anybody can point me to?
Like I said, I'm happy to go over there on Sundays and help out and bring my new MacBook Pro over and hook it up to the projector and point out interesting things you can do on the Mac and answer questions.
But the big question that I can't answer is, "Are there benefits to using a Mac over Windows for people with disabilities?" If anybody knows of any, please let me know! I don't want the person promoting this project to feel it was a waste at all. I think basically he feels left out being basically the only Mac user there and wants to generate more of a circle of supportive people around him who are Mac users since he himself is losing his sight. So if there are factual, practical reasons for "Why Mac for people with disabilities" I would like to explain them.
    Thanks,
    Doug

    Hi Doug
It sounds like you are doing a good job with your technology students. I've been an Apple Mac user for well over 30 years and occasionally had to use Windows when using MS Access.  To my mind, the Mac is much easier to use from the "Starting Grid" than Windows.  And having worked in a University with both platforms, the cult is fairly evenly balanced.  However, the current generations of Apple Tablets are infinately easier to understand than OSX or Win7/8.    I think there is an old saying here which has many merits "If it ain't broke" don't try and fix it".   If your students are learning to understand Windows and are coping with it, the confusion of teaching them Mac, might actually give yourself a potential nightmare scenario.  Certainly Microsoft with Windows 8, is trying to bring the latest operating system into the 21st Century, and whilst it wouldn't suit me, why create a dilemma for yourself when they seem to be happy with what they've got.
In terms of your final paragraph, and reaching for the proverbial glass ball, I can see a future of tablets gaining even more popularity, and with the likes of Siri, which is in part available now on the iPhone.  Surely this is the path of the future where one can talk to the device and gain an immediate response.  Even Steve Wozniak hinted at this in a television interview on BBC's Click television programme.  I'm sorry there's no definitive answer to your question, but hats off to Gene Roddenberry whose imagination has given inspiration to the makers of our devices that has created a communications world and is infinately getting closer to the audience you are trying to reach out to.

  • How to get more features for Captivate 6

    Hi all,
I've installed Captivate 6 on my laptop at work, I use it for creating training material for our project management system. I was just looking at some Adobe video tutorial and there are some features shown in the videos that I can't find on my captivate (for example Drag and Drop interaction, some particular widget like "Hangman" etc...). I tried to download them, clicking on the "Download more interactions" but there are any available. So, is there a way to get those features, at least those shown in your video tutorial for Captivate 6?
    Thank you very much
    Elena

    Hello,
    thank you for your answer.
I have the version 6.0, so maybe I can't get those features because of the version that I have.
Even if I click on "Download more" on the Interactions window, there are no Interactions available, but is it a problem related to my version or it's because there aren't available new features?
    Thank you very much,

    Hello and welcome,
I cannot remember for the Hangman interaction anymore, but Drag&Drop was only available for subscription users, for version 6.1.0.3190 Maybe it was not clear in the video you are pointing at, that not all features were available for box licenses. Which version do you have?

  • New feature for Preview - Where to submit?

I have a thought for a new feature for Preview that I wonder how many people would say it is worth submitting to Apple, and if so, then where and how do I send it to them?
The problem I face is that I get a lot of PDF forms off websites (usually financially related) that are not created with proper form fields, so I am forced to print the form off and use my "chicken scribble" handwriting to fill it in, then I usually try to email it back, but sometimes I have to fax or mail it.
Well, the thought I had was, "Why can't I use Preview to select a font, click on the page with the Text tool and start typing in what I need?"
Ideally it would be good to be able to save the document with your "overtyping", but I understand that some PDF files are protected, so how about saving just the stuff I have added as to a PDF file that when I open that, it opens the original (blank) form as well?
Surely I'm not the only one that has to fill in PDF forms. Anyone else think this is a worthy addition to Previews already good capabilities?
If so, how do I pass this idea onto someone that cares?
    Cheers,
    Mark

    Welcome to the Forums!
It is a good suggestion. FYI, Acrobat Professional can do this (not the free reader, of course).
Thanks also for understanding that this is not the place for suggestions to Apple!
There's no specific feedback page for Preview, so you should submit to the general OS X feedback page.
Links to other feedback pages (for your future ideas) are here.
    Hope this helps...

  • Learning more about the features in PS touch

I was looking at PS touch, maybe for my ipod mini.
I was hoping to get more of a sense of what the features are, but it seems Adobe has replaced information with hype, giving us the Disney version of what their programs are about.
I'd like to know more about the features of PS Touch, specifically:
I assume I can use layers, but do they have modes such as darken, lighten, overlay, soft light, etc?
Can I create masks in these layers, so I have control over which part of the layer is applied to the image?
Does the curves tool have more than 3 points to adjust, can you add points as with full PS?
If I was working off my camera's memory card hooked up to the iPod mini, can I then do a save as of the image I'm working on, either saving it to the card or my device (in part to create a new image and to also keep the original) ?
It's very frustrating that this information is not more readily available to us. also, I may have missed it, but i didn't see a link to the forums from the Adobe pages, not under Learning, or about Adobe, or?
    Regards, David

    In order:
Yes, PS Touch uses layer blending modes just like in Photoshop (and Photoshop Elements). It doesn't have *every* blending mode, but the basics (like the ones you listed) are there.
The best that I can explain it as far as "masks" in PS Touch goes is that you paint your desired effect onto your image (via the Effects Paint tool). You do not need a mask layer per se as the effect is contained as you paint over the desired area. (You can adjust size, hardness, flow and opacity of the brush in this tool. If you have a tablet with pressure-senstive support, you can control size and opacity as well dynamically like you would with a Wacom graphics tablet connected to a desktop.)
You can add/subtract as many points as you want in the Curves adjustment. (There's a general Curves adjustment and one provided under the Effects Paint tool; both use the same interface for options.)
I don't think so, as the file system in PS Touch is self-contained (at least under Android; not sure about iOS). When you go to save a project, it's added into the main interface. (You can create folders to manage these projects, btw.) You can then export projects under a desired file type (like PSD or JPEG) locally or to a service like Adobe's own Creative Cloud or Dropbox.

  • Where is the "trusted source" for FrameMaker 12?

When I run a script from a command line, I get the "You are about to run a script in Adobe FrameMaker 12. You should only run a script from a trusted source." Etc. The ExtendScript Toolkit docs say "the user-script folder of installed Adobe applications". Any idea where this would be for FrameMaker 12? Thanks.

Default favorite in the Scripts panel displays the contents of this folder.
When double-clicking a JSX file, the Toolkit normally acts as an invisible security filter. Before actually
launching the file, a security dialog asks if it is OK to execute the script. The Toolkit treats the user's
Documents/Adobe Scripts folder, however, as a trusted location; when you double-click a JSX file in that
folder, the Toolkit does not display the security alert.
In WIndows, that is "%userprofile%\Documents\Adobe Scripts".

  • Ripping DVD's: what to do about special features

What do you guys do about special features on DVD's? I rip everything to my drives, but then the AppleTV becomes a clutter of entries...

Well, I like to keep everything organized, so I encode the specials features as one file with the movie. They play after the movie plays. When Apple allows us to add chapters, then I will be able to just skip to them instead of fast-forwarding.Okay, I understand now. Actually, Apple already allows you to chapter your movies. However, if you do so in the normal fashion, then you will have to put everything in an MOV file container instead of MP4 or M4V containers. This means you cannot associate external "cover artwork" but, if you want to include it, embed it in your movie as a poster frame and limit dimensions to your frame size. You can use a program like Metadata Hootenanny to capture/insert chapters from your DVD or simply insert a single chapter marker at the beginning of your "special." In adddition to the "fast forwarding" capability of TV you mentioned, it also creates "pseudo" chapters of equal time intervals for "stepping" through your movie rather than "fast forwarding" if preferred. Unfortunately, they would probably not be very accurate for finding the start of your "special" content.
