About global variables

can any one please help me how to declaru and use global variables in oracle forms. i want to pass the details entered in one form to another form. i am unable to do this.
please some one say how to do this.

vivek
you have to use following keyword to declare a Global variable with no datatype
:GLOBAL.VARIABLENAME
you may initialize the global variable with your text filed or some stativ value like
:GLOBAL.VARIABLENAME := :Field

Hi all,
I did forms personalzation based on global variables.
When when i login for the first time untill and unless i validated the global variables the following error is displaying.
Tokens in the string could not be evalated. please check the syntax.
Once i validated the global variables then it will working fine.
Did any of you have faced this problem please let me know the solution.

• Newbie thread about global variables and result set

Hello everyone this is my first post, im from colombia and now im learning about this world !! the WCC !!
Now im doing a practice but im so noob that i cant get it so far... i wrote some of the oracle documentation.. and it was so usefull for starting.. but now im trying to do custom components builded in java + resources + services + template etcc .. all good stuff :D.
i want to retrieve a result set coming from a custom service ... and then i want to store this result set in some kind of global variable !! why ? because i want to use this data from the result set again and again without making more call to the service !!
ive tried to copy this resultset but i think it cant be done because i use a popUp window to display the rows from the RS.. and when i close the window .. it dies!!
i want to use this RS for 3 custom metadata field.. but i have no idea how to do this....
this is a part of my custom resource
<$if fieldName like "xElaborador"$>
<$executeService("SERVICE_ALLUSERS")$>
<$trace(" ### executing service ###","#log")$>
<!--i tried to copy the rs here but this is wrong i guess -->

<$endif$>
<!-- usuarios_LDAP is the RS parameter coming from the java calss -->

I haven't used the 4.1 version of the debugger (I can't get it to work on a single file/class) but under 3.6 you just put the cursor over them and the values is in the tooltip.

• Why does Labview create a .vi for each global variables?

Hello,
I wrote an Labview application which use several global variables (almost 30 variables). All the variables are of variable type "single process". For each of these variables, Labview creates a vi.
For example, for the variable "_TS.Measures.channes", Labview creates a vi named "TS_'_TS.Measures.channels'.vi". Which means, I have almost 30 "name of variable".vi files: this is confusing!
All my VI are inside library (.llb). When I try to put the VI of a global variable in a library, Labview can't find them anymore.
May be can somebody explain me, why LabVIEW does create these VI and how is it possible to put them in a library.
Cheers,
Risotto

Hi everybody,
Thank you for your answers, I get a lot of informations.
Yes, I use the new shared variables in LabVIEW8, which I am using like sort of global constants. Now I am understanding what guys are telling me all this about global variables in LabVIEW7.1. Sorry, I forgot to say I was using LabvVIEW8.
I will have a look on the tutorial too.
But yet one point about the library collecting all the shared variables in the windows explorer and in the project explorer: When I create a shared variable in my LabVIEW project - for example "test1" as double/single process - the variable doesn't appear in my file directory, but it appears in the project explorer in a library (.lvlib).
When I drag/paste my shared variable on the block diagramm of my VI, then a file "Math_test1.vi" appears in my file directory. There is no extra .llb created to contain my shared variable vi.
If I drag/paste the file "Math_test1.vi" in the Math.llb (see picture), then the file is moved in the llb and disapeared from the directory.
If I created another shared variable "test2" as double/single process and put it on the VI, then LabVIEW creates2 files in the directory: "Math_test1.vi" and "Math_test2.vi". So that I get 2 vi for the "test1" variable now (one in the llb and one in the directory).
I use several library in the project explorer. But the library in the project explorer seems to create file with other extension (.lvlib) than the sdtandard LabVIEW library (.llb).
Cheers,
Risotto

• More details about Surprising LV global variable of type 2

I'm using a type 2 global variable because I need a big data array shared by
two parallel VI, so this data array is manipulated in a subVI non reentrant.
One input of this subVI is an enum called method which represents what
action to do on the data of the subVI and this input is directly wired to a
condition structure.
The big data array is contained by an indicator in the front panel of this
subVI because
this big data is an output of the load method so this indicator is wired as
output connector of the subVI because it is needed when loaded.
For other method the big data array is read to extract part of needed data,
so in the subVI diagramm, a readable local variable issued from the big data
arra
y terminal is used . But how big data array is not needed for these
methods, big data array terminal is not rewritten as output in these
condition diagramms because the big data array is theoretically unchanged
and I want to avoid to duplicate my big data array to save time and memory.
The result is surprising because:
After the load method, the big data array output is right.
Then, the input of the second subVI call as a get method is correct.
Readable local variable of the big data array sends right data as input of
the condition associated with this method, in the subVI.
Then, the input of the third subVI call as a get method is wrong. Readable
local variable of the big data array sends wrong data as input of the
condition associated with this method, in the subVI.
So, I suppose I have to wire my big array as output of the condition for
every method call, what lose
a lot of time and memory.
Have you a better idea, please?

Brice,
Are you using a while loop with uninitialized shift-registers in your LV2
style global. This technique is what defines a "LV2 style global" also
called functional globals because you can embed actual functionality into
the VI (for example in your case to extract certain data from an array and
operate on it) as opposed to the read/write only usage of the built in
globals.
From what I can gather, it doesn't sound like you are using the while
loop/shift-register method. You shouldn't need to use a local variable at
all. The data is passed around using the shift-register and it passes
through all of you conditions (load, get, etc.) and no you won't lose time
and memory (or money) doing it this way, certainly not any more than you
would using a local variable. Try it and see if it doesn't fix your
problems and work better than what you are doing now.
If you are using a while loop and shift-registers, then I'm not
understanding clearly what you are doing. Perhaps if you emailed me your VI
(privately of course) to take a look at.
Good Luck!

Hi,
If you still feel that you are facing the issue, then you can create a new include for your project inside the
Include ZXRSRU01 and you can handle the datasources for your projects there.

• How do I add a global variable to my app?

Hi all,
I am building a flex app which displays data in different tabs from a mysql database and I wan't to add a sign in process to make sure only registered users of the mysql db can see the data.
To achieve this I built a sign in component which accepts a username, password and the name of the database to connect to. My flex app then uses a php script to verify that the user can connect to the database using the details entered. If not, the sign in component displays an error message, but if sign in details are verified then the user can see the data from the database.
How can I store the details in the flex app for that users session so that when the user queries the db for data, flex uses the details entered during the sign in process to connect to the mysql db and submit the query?
I thought about storing the details as an array in a global variable and then accessing that global variable from anywhere in my app but I don't know if that is the correct/secure way to do what I want, nor do I know how to do it. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
xander

quick, dirty example, could be improved on but it'll get you rolling;
After user login has succeeded, send off another HTTP service eg;
========
<mx:Script>
<![CDATA[
public var whateverUserNameWasEntered:String;
public var whateverUserPasswordEntered:String;
public function onLoginSuccess():void
whateverUserNameWasEntered:String = loginbox.text;
whateverUserPasswordEntered:String = passwordbox.text;
storeSessionStuff.send();
]]>
</mx:Script>
<mx:HTTPService id="storeSessionStuff" showBusyCursor="true" method="POST" url="http://localhost/store.php" useProxy="false">
<mx:request xmlns="">
<username>
{whateverUserNameWasEntered}
</username>
<password>
{whateverUserPasswordEntered}
</password>
</mx:request>
</mx:HTTPService>
========
direct it to the php file.....
<?php
session_start();
$_SESSION['username'] = $_POST['username'];
$_SESSION['password'] = $_POST['password'];
?>
Then, whenever you want to get the information out of the Session, send off another HTTP Service...;
<mx:HTTPService id="getSessionStuff" result="storeData(event)" showBusyCursor="true" method="POST" url="http://localhost/get.php" useProxy="false"/>
to the php file....
<?php
session_start();
print "<details><username>".$_SESSION['username']."</username><password>".$_SESSION['password'] ."</password></details>";
?>
which, you need a result function for:
<mx:Script>
<![CDATA[
private function storeData(evt:ResultEvent):void
var username:String;
var password: String;
username = evt.result.details.username;
password = evt.result.details.password;
]]>
</mx:Script>
ta daa
(if thats what you meant)

• How do I store VI References in global variables and access them later

From what I know, Labview automatically deletes VI references when they go out of use. Is there a way for me to override this so that I can access a set of preloaded references in a separate VI? Essentially I would like to open the VI's dynamically into the memory, store the references in global variables and access them at a later time. The VI's I'm referencing won't be known until runtime. I know its not the safest way to do it, but it would be the most productive on my end.
Thank you
Clay Upton

I'm not sure what you mean by "a later time", but a VI reference will remain valid as long as the VI is in memory. If you don't unload the VIs, the references will remain valid.
If you do need to unload the VIs, for whatever reason, I would suggest the following:
Create a functional global as your interface for obtaining the references.
Feed the paths to the VIs into the VI when initializing it (since you don't know which VIs in advance).
When calling the VI to obtain the references, have the VI check them first (using the Not a Number... primitive). If it sees that they're invalid, it can open a new reference and return that.
You should note that when a VI is removed from memory, the data space is used is released, so if those VIs are expected to hold data (using shift registers, etc.) this will be a problem.
The description I've given will only be usable in certain instances (and it has its intricacies), but you didn't really give any details about what you're actually trying to accomplish.
Try to take over the world!

• Problems in syncronyzing two threads into Test Stand using a Global Variable (TestStand 4.1.1)

I have one thread that is doing TCPIP Aquisition into a Global variable defined in Teststand. And I have another thread that it supose to read it. All are in the same sequence and execution. The problem is that the aquisition thread got a lot of bytes, while the processing thread is reading always only a few. Do you know what the problem could be?
I will attach also some pictures just to be maybe more clear...
Attachments:
Implementation_pictures.zip ‏368 KB

I wasn't looking at your Sequence, I was looking at Receive_HDL_Block.JPG. What is that VI doing (the one with number 3 on the icon and Size_in_bytes as an input) ?
Where in teststand are you doing any checking?
I don't really understand your sequence.
You have a sequence (running in a new thread) (why), following by another called Receiver Handler (also running in a new thread) then two more sequences which seem to do some with transmitting something (also running as new threads). You are only waiting on one of these threads (the Receiver Handler). There does seem to be any loops in TestStand, you dont seem to be bothered about the other threads that you have running. What happens when this test sequence finally does stop, what is stopping the Threads that you have running.
Your pictures dont really seem to fit in with your Test Sequence, such as where does Test_005.vi fit into everything
The whole thing is a bit of a nightmare.
Maybe your best bet would be to scrap the lot and start again. Only this time have a better understanding of what you what to achieve, what would be best to put into Teststand and what to put into labview. Whether you really need all those new threads running.
Sorry to be so blunt.

• Using functional global variables to transfer data between touch screen device and other targets

Hi,
We are currently developing a control system that will operate on a cRIO with a touch screen interface. During development we have been using functional global variables (FGVs) to handle most of the settings/data etc, however we have just realised that we may have an issue updating the data on the touch screen, and vice versa.
Previously we have implemented similar programs using shared variables, however we were wondering if there is anyway to implement FGVs in a similar manner, whether it'd be a combination of FGVs and shared variables.

Software version: Labview 8.2.1

See this thread on LAVA about sharing FGV's across projects. THis should be extendable to cross paltforms (I believe).
You also may want to concider an upgrade to LV 8.5.1. We have found a number of performance related issues with LV 8.2.1 and RT.
If you decide not to upgrade, just remeber what I wrote (above) when you have reason to question the performance.
