About oracle_home

Hi,
I'm trying to understand something.
I have installed the oracle database 11gR2, so I have at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\, an KeyOraDb11gHome_1 child node.. with many variables. Ok, then I have the Developer Suite 10gR2 installed, with also a child node (Key_DevSuiteHome10g) in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\
My question is, when something is requesting the oracle_home variable, where it looks for? I have seen somewhere an ORACLE_HOME also in the Environment variables (My computer -> Properties -> Advanced -> Environment Variables).
So, why should someone manually define there, a new system variable entry of oracle home (also TNS_ADMIN, with the value ...\network\admin), pointing to the directory where database is installed, if that oracle_home is created by default in registry, when installing oracle database.. ? Is this needed?
And there was also a system variable.. ORACLE_SID, with the database sid.
So i'm just curious, what's the difference between the oracle_home from env. variable, and the oracle_home in registry?
I think there is no need to manually define other variables as environment variables.
Thanks.

And lest someone accuse me of simply being a nix bigot who doesn't "get" Windows ... My career trajectory went from IBM Big Iron (sys-360 and its descendents) -> OS/2 -> Windows -> Solaris -> AIX -> HP-UX -> Oracle Linux. My first Oracle database was v7.3 on Win 3.11. If anything, I should have a bias toward* Windows .....

• About ORACLE_HOME used diskspace

I had install Oracle817 on red hat 6.2,the ORACLE_HOME is use a single partition ,when I use "du" to check the ORACLE_HOME ,it show use 1.2G disk space ,but when I use "df " to check the partition ,it show me 1.4G
disk space is used ,I don't know where are the 200M disk space is use ,why ? thank you !

Three solutions
1) set the registry TNS_ADMIN to point to the correct tnsnames.ora
This becomes the central tnsnames.ora on your machine.
2 issue E:\oracle\product\10.2.0\OraHome10\bin\tnsping
and notice it this time uses the correct tnsnames.ora
3 Use the Oracle Home Selector to make sure
E:\oracle\product\10.2.0\OraHome10
is first in the PATH
Solutuion 1 is preferred.

• ORACLE_HOME changed,how to reconfigurate EM

hi,I've installed ORACLE 10G on SUN 10, and patched it to 10.2.0.4. All things includ DB and EM were work well.
After shutdown EM' dbconsole and DB,I moved the ORACLE_BASE to another directory for some reason, then the EM can not up anymore.
please tell me how can I reconfigurate to enable EM.

• Linux: Preferred method to link / locate libclnt(sh)?

I am working with a lot of cross-platform software (Linux + Windows). Part of the software uses OCI, but up to now only on Windows. Now I complied for Linux, and after not much work, it is operating. But I am not sure whether I am on the right trail with linking to $ORACLE_HOME/lib/libclntsh.so.
My doubts:
• My database tool is 0.6 MB, libclntsh.so.12.1 is 57.4 MB. Oooops???
• I linked to $ORACLE_HOME/lib/libclntsh.so (that is a link to libclntsh.so.12.1). Now my program searches for libclntsh.so.12.1 at run-time. That isn't portable!
• If I link to the static library, the manuals say, I have to rebuild the static library with each version, and I have to re-link with each db version. So I get m x n versions of my software.
• After the standard installation, each and every user using the tool must have an environment set, at least ORACLE_HOME. If not, my tool seems to find the .so (maybe from /etc/ld.so.cache?), but the first call OCIEnvNlsCreate() fails, and since there is no handle for error description, it tells me that there is no chance to get the error description. With ORACLE_HOME, it works fine.
• The client installation didn't leave libclntsh.so in /lib, /lib64 or /usr/lib64 or any such directory. This seems to match the concept "You may install different clients at the same time."
• My $ORACLE_HOME/lib/libclntst12.a is of size zero. Why???
I have a plan I am about to try, but before I try the hard way, I would like to ask for your experience. Here is my plan:
• Check the environment for $ORACLE_HOME, and throw an error, if it isn't defined.
• Use using dlopen() to load $ORACLE_HOME/lib/libclntsh.so at run-time (instead of load-time!).
• Retrieve addresses of the functions by dlsym().
• Call OCI functions indirectly.
Is this plan OK?
Which other options are there, and which approach is the "commonly used"?
Would it be good to use the oldest/newest static library, can it be used with any ORACLE_HOME? Surely not...
I have tried to google information about it, but I only found an overwhelming lot of installation issues. Everybody is installing products which don't find the correct .so file — this is exactly what I am trying to avoid.
Thank you very much in advance for a short notice.

First of all: Thank you very much. I have investigated more.
About ORACLE_HOME: You are right, it isn't necessary.
In a Windows environment, I have never had any need to set ORACLE_HOME. This is probably due to the fact that I use Windows as TNS client only, and I cannot connect to the linux server using IPC. So I don't use Windows in a wide variety...
I have been mislead by some strange output from oracle tools on the linux server when ORACLE_HOME is not set. My tool does not need an ORACLE_HOME.
About linking to libclntsh.so: You are wrong, this is restricting the tool to a Version 12 client (as long as I am developing with a V12 client).
The client 12 installation is creating links "libclntsh.so.10.1" and "libclntsh.so.11.1" to support older software. But the client 10 installation does not create a link "libclntsh.so.12.1" to support newer software.
Even if I rename libclntsh.so.12.1 to libclntsh.so and link with it, my linked software searches "libclntsh.so.12.1" — which is the wrong concept. Please have in mind: The link "libclntsh.so" is created by the installation to make sure the library can be found as "libclntsh.so". Hence, my software must search for "libclntsh.so", not for "libclntsh.so.12.1".
I am not much an expert with shared objects on Linux, but I guess Oracle did the mistake to build a "libclntsh.so.12.1" directly — instead of building a "libclntsh.so" and renaming it to "libclntsh.so.12.1"?
So my plan has changed:
• Don't throw an error, if $ORACLE_HOME isn't defined.
• If $ORACLE_HOME is set: Use dlopen() to load $ORACLE_HOME/lib/libclntsh.so at run-time.
• If $ORACLE_HOME is not set: Use dlopen() to load libclntsh.so at run-time.
• Retrieve addresses of the functions by dlsym().
• Call OCI functions indirectly.
This should be working well for Linux — and for Windows with $ORACLE_HOME/bin/oci.dll, respectively.

• Troubleshooting PHP ORA-12154

I have studied the php troubleshooting faq - I have php5+apache2 set up on what I think are two identical servers. One works, the other doesn't. Both establish ORACLE_HOME and TNS_ADMIN in the httpd script right before starting httpd.
I have a test file where I to getenv on both ORACLE_HOME and TNS_ADMIN and print them out - they look fine.
Then the script tries to connect to the database. In the server that fails, I get the error "_oci_open_server: Error while trying to retrieve text for error ORA-12154" as if it is clueless about ORACLE_HOME. What gives? How can I troubleshoot?

Ahah! The trick is to make sure that the /home/oracle folder is chmod to 755 from the default 700. All the installed files are neatly 755 except if the baseline /home/oracle folder is 700 httpd can never look in there!

• Publishing Oracle Data Miner 10.2 results

Hi all,
Am working on OBIEE 10.1.3.4.
I've used Oracle DataMiner 10.2 and i need to publish and integrate Data Mining results to OBIEE.
Any suggestions?
Thanks very much.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the quick reply. BTW, are the Oracle Higher-ups aware of MSFT's free Server offering? I haven't tried it yet, but I have this sneaking suspicion that it probably has the Data Mining features enabled. I would much rather work with Oracle, of course. The main attraction of 10G XE to me was being able to install it easily on a Windows machine without having to worry about ORACLE_HOME etc.; however, since the Data Mining and most of the Analytic features are absent, I will probably desist from using 10G XE.
Some more questions I have are:
is there any advantage to installing Oracle 10g Personal Edition instead of the EE one, since I am installing under a Developer Licence anyway? Does the PE use less resources than the EE? My question is because the documentation says that PE is a single user edition. Does that mean multiple users cannot be created or that only 1 user can log in at a time? Will that still allow Data Mining, Oracle Warehouse Builder etc. to run?
Thank you for all your help!
- Atish

• Sqldeveloper ORA-12705 NLS parameter problem

Hi,
I just have installed sqldeveloper 1.2.1.
I´m using Oracle 9i with american_america character set.
My Win XP regional settings: Español (Ecuador) = Spanish (Ecuador)
I configured sqldevloper with Language=American, Territory=Ecuador, Sort=Spanish, Comp=Binary and Date Language=American. However, I get connected to the db succesfully, but I got an annoying message (2 times):
An error was encountered performing the following operation:
ORA-12705: Invalid or unknown NLS parameter value especifed.........
It could be great if someone could help me to get rid of this messages...
Regards,
Santiago

Fixed ORA-12705 with sqldeveloper Version 1.5.1 Build MAIN-5440 on Windows XP
I also had ORA-12705 Cannot access NLS data files or invalid environment specified on connect to DBMS instance and was able to track it down to the environemnt variable ORACLE_HOME which I had set in the dos command box as below:
ORACLE_HOME=C:\programs\oracle\product\10.2
That pointed to an Oracle Client ORACLE_HOME.
I realized that the error goes away if:
a) I remove ORACLE_HOME from the environment, i.e. "set ORACLE_HOME=" in the does box or
b) I set ORACLE_HOME=C:\programs\oracle\product\11.1, where this is an 11.1 SERVER ORACLE_HOME
Using regmon I saw that sqldeveloper does not access the Windows registry. Unfortunately I was unable to determine the root cause why the error occured when ORACLE_HOME pointed to the 10.2 client ORACLE_HOME. All I can say is it was not due to file access permissions.
I was also unable to determine why sqldeveloper kept using C:\programs\oracle\product\10.2\jdbc\lib\ojdbc14.jar even when ORACLE_HOME did not point to C:\programs\oracle\product\10.2.
With ORACLE_HOME=C:\programs\oracle\product\11.1 the following jar file was used for JDBC:
C:\programs\oracle\product\11.1\jdbc\lib\ojdbc5.jar
When I'm setting "set ORACLE_HOME=C:\programs\sqldeveloper", which is the installation directory of sqldeveloper, then it works fine and filemon utility shows that it uses this JDBC jar file:
C:\programs\sqldeveloper\jdbc\lib\ojdbc5.jar
Unfortunately neither Oracle® Database SQL Developer Installation Guide Release 1.5 E12153-02 nor Oracle® Database
SQL Developer User’s Guide Release 1.5 E12152-05 (the latest editions as of Dec 08) say anything about ORACLE_HOME that applies.
However this info in the "User's Guide" is noteworthy: "_Note that SQL Developer does not use default values from the current system for globalization support parameters_;"
This seems to indicate that any NLS_* parameters in the registry and environment (DOS box) are ignored. Go to Tools > Preferences > Database > NLS in sqldeveloper to set them. But there is no way to set the character set!

I'm trying to demonstrate some ASM features to my team and used: emctl start dbconsole for this.
My problem:
The em does only know about the DB instance that runs on the machine and it seems to mee that I'm not able to see more than the db- and listener status...
The listener is shown as "down", even if it's running and it's not possible to start it with the console because in the following window host and oracle_home are withour values.
ASM is nowhere to be seen even if it's up and running.
i used

i don't get it :)

• About listeners for different databases in the same ORACLE_HOME

Hello experts, I have a doubt
I have installed 3 different databases in the same server which OS is Suse Enterprise 10. At this moment I have just one listener that registers all the services. The number of connections are big for two of the three databases so I do not know what might be the best practices for this environment. I have some question I would like you suggestion for me:
DB version: 11.1.0.7
Should I have three listener, one for each database?
Is a good practice to have only one listener for multiple instances in the same server?
Are there differents between have only one listener for all the instance and have one listener for instance?
What about the performance?
Than you in advance, I hope you can guide me.

Best practice is not to have multiple databases on one server, depending on resources.
Should I have three listener, one for each database?
No. That is pretty undesirable and requires more administration.
Is a good practice to have only one listener for multiple instances in the same server?
Yes. Remember the listener is only a broker and there are no permanent connections between client, listener and database.
Are there differents between have only one listener for all the instance and have one listener for instance?
Yes. The latter is an administration nightmare.
What about the performance?
Who cares? The only factors are
listener.log becomes too big --> set up proper cleanup procedures
The number of semaphores is exceeded (Unix) or no more threads can be created (Microsoft winblows), which will give rise to ora-12500.

Check permissions in /usr/ccs/bin. I had the same problem due to set id bit being set on all binaries in this directory. Consequently, it runs as 'bin', who doesn't have permission to write in the 'oracle' directories.
Ps. Mubashir. Oliver posted this to this group as there does't appear to be a Solaris 8i install group. So check you facts before you get smart.

- You can install and operate multiple Oracle homes and different versions of Oracle cluster database software on the same computer as described in the following points:
-You can install multiple Oracle Database 10g RAC homes on the same node. The multiple homes feature enables you to install one or more releases on the same machine in multiple Oracle home directories. However, each node can have only one CRS home.
-In addition, you cannot install Oracle Database 10g RAC into an existing single-instance Oracle home. If you have an Oracle home for Oracle Database 10g, then use a different Oracle home, and one that is available across the entire cluster for your new installation. Similarly, if you have an Oracle home for an earlier Oracle cluster database software release, then you must also use a different home for the new installation.
If the OUI detects an earlier version of a database, then the OUI asks you about your upgrade preferences. You have the option to upgrade one of the previous-version databases with DBUA or to create a new database using DBCA. The information collected during this dialog is passed to DBUA or DBCA after the software is installed.
- You can use the OUI to complete some of the de-install and re-install steps for Oracle Database 10g Real Application Clusters if needed.
Note:
Do not move Oracle binaries from one Oracle home to another because this causes dynamic link failures.
. If you are using ASM with Oracle database instances from multiple database homes on the same node, then Oracle recommends that you run the ASM instance from an Oracle home that is distinct from the database homes. In addition, the ASM home should be installed on every cluster node. This prevents the accidental removal of ASM instances that are in use by databases from other homes during the de-installation of a database's Oracle home.

• Unable to find oracle binaries under %ORACLE_HOME%\bin folder

Hi ALL,
I have a new problem in my production server. When i planned to start the service of OEM(oracledbconsoleprod) in WINDOWS SERVER 2003 i got an error like " Error997.overlapped I/O opeartion is in progress" .
Then i planned to start through cmd . It showing that 'emctl ' is a unrecognized command .
Then i checked in "c:\oracle\product\10.2\db_1\bin" i can't find any binary files like 'emca, emctl ' etc.
My database version is 10.2.0.4.0 .
My doubt is -- > if i copy the binary files like 'emca, emctl ' etc from standby server(10.2.0.4.0) to production server(10.2.0.4.0) will it work?
will i get the same configuration again or i need to create the OEM again?

Hi,
1. Do you backup of ORACLE_HOME available..
2. Only copying emctl/emca binariews might not help you because you are not aware about other files.. Some other files/binaries may also be missing
I would suggest you restore it from backup..

will i get the same configuration again or i need to create the OEM again? It may or may not work.. You can give it a try.. If it doesn't work either go for restoring from backup or fresh installation..
Also only binaries are missing .. it doesn't have do anything with OEM configuration.. It should work fine once you have all binaries in place.
Kind Regards
