About update statement in procedure

I have one table usersubscription (userid,newsletterid,deleted)
I got one string from user e.g. ('1,2,3') and userid = 14
I wrote proceduer that will insert this records in to usersubscription table;
userid newsletterid deleted
14 1 n
14 2 n
14 3 n
default value of deleted column is 'n'.
my procedure is as follows;
CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE usersubscription_procd1 (vuserid in number, vnewsletterid IN VARCHAR2)
AS
I NUMBER;
J NUMBER;
VAL VARCHAR2(100);
BEGIN
I := 1;
J := 1;
WHILE INSTR(vnewsletterid,',',I) != 0 LOOP
VAL := SUBSTR(vnewsletterid,I,INSTR(vnewsletterid,',',I)-J);
I := INSTR(vnewsletterid,',',I)+1;
J := I;
INSERT INTO usersubscription (usersubcriptionid,userid,newsletterid)
VALUES (usersubscription_seq.nextval,vuserid,VAL);
END LOOP;
VAL := SUBSTR(vnewsletterid,I,LENGTH(vnewsletterid));
INSERT INTO usersubscription (usersubcriptionid,userid,newsletterid)
VALUES (usersubscription_seq.nextval,vuserid,VAL);
END;
Now one requirement is that when new string comes for same userid e.g.('1,4,5') userid = 14
then the deleted column for 2 and 3 newsletterid changes to 'y';
please tell me the solution.
Prathamesh.

• Doubt about UPDATE STAT COLUMN

Hi,
I have a doubt of when to execute update stat:
i create this SQL to generate an SQL script to generate update stat for all my tables:
select 'UPDATE STAT ' || schemaname || '.' || tablename || ' ESTIMATE SAMPLE 20 PERCENT' from tables where schemaname = 'DBUSER' and not tablename like 'JDBC%' AND type = 'TABLE'
and created this SQL to generate an SQL script for update stat for all columns.
select 'UPDATE STAT COLUMN(*) FOR ' || schemaname || '.' || tablename || ' ESTIMATE SAMPLE 20 PERCENT' from tables where schemaname = 'DBUSER' and not tablename like 'JDBC%' AND type = 'TABLE'
my doubt is i really need run that second script? or the UPDATE STAT for table dont UPDATE STAT for all columns?
thanks for any insight
Clóvis

> my doubt is i really need run that second script? or the UPDATE STAT for table dont UPDATE STAT for all columns?
Hi Clovis,
hmm... good question.
There are a few things to know about the UPDATE STAT command here.
1) It will always generate statistics for key or indexed columns.
2) The optimizer won't be able to generate a better plan when there are column statistics for non-indexed columns present.
3) The command will also collect column statistics for all columns that already have statistics.
The direct effect of 3) is that by running your second command just once - all column statistics will always be collected.
Since you can easily change the default sample size for your tables via
ALTER TABLE SAMPLE SIZE 20 PERCENT
I would say: drop your script and just use
UPDATE STAT DBUSER.* ESTIMATE
This single command would lead to the same statistics as your script does.
And if you really, really want to leave out the JDBC tables - then just set their default sample size to 0 and they will be ignored by the UPDATE STAT command.
regards,
Lars

• Update Statement Help Please

I'm coming from the MS SQL world LOL

Can you give me some advice on how to do this please?

I have faced this issue earlier.
WHERE tmpuser.emp_id = employee.emp_idCan you explain?Not out of context. Post a complete statement.
If this isn't directly related to user9170886's problem, then it's better to start your own thread.
I can say a few things about UPDATE statements in general:
The WHERE clause governs which rows will be UPDATEd. If there is no WHERE clause, all rows in the table will be UPDATEd.
So
UPDATE     employee
SET     employee_name = ( <subquery> )
;UPDATEs every row in employee, because the UPDATE statement does not have a WHERE clause. Nothing in the sub-query can change that.
A sub-query can reference values from its immediate parent, but a parent can't reference values from a sub-query (other than the values actually returned by the sub-query, of course).
So
UPDATE     employee
SET     employee_name = ( <subquery> )
WHERE     tmpuser.emp_id     = employee.emp_id
;causes an error, because there is no table called tmpuser in the main UPDATE statement. Nothing in the sub-query can change that.

• Deadlocks with simple UPDATE statement

I have in a C# program a dictionary and in SQL Server a stored procedure with a simple UPDATE statement. I process the dictionary in parallel. For each entry in my dictionary I call this stored procedure and I am getting deadlocks.
This is the UPDATE statement:
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[UpdateImages]
@ICRTCode nvarchar(max),
@ICRTImage nvarchar(max)
AS
BEGIN
UPDATE Images SET processed = '1', Image = @ICRTImage, ProcessDate = GETDATE() WHERE IDICRT = @ICRTCode
END
Can someone give me a hint as to why this would cause deadlocks? There are no other processes writing to this table. This is a table in a staging database.

• How to use Update Statement in ODI Procedure

Hi,
How can I use an update statement inside an ODI procedure.
Thanks

Hi,
You do not need the BEGIN and END. ODI procedures are free text, so you can simply write your update statement, as you would in toad/sql developer etc etc. Just make sure you set the Technology and the logical schema. It is how ever best practice to also use the API:
<%=odiRef.getSchemaName("YOUR_LOGICAL_SCHEMA_NAME", "D")%>. to prefix tables. This way, you select data from different schema's in the same instance (as long a your user has the correct privs).

• Executing a Variable in a Stored Procedure containing an Update Statement

Hi,
I have created a Stored Procedure, it has one input parameter. Inside the Stored Procedure there are 5 other variables are declared, based on the input parameter 4 of these variables are populated.
Fifth variable is a a concatenation of text and some of these variables and creates a dynamic Update Statement. Once it is created I want to execute this variable but it is not executing.
Could someone please help me in knowing how to execute a variable within a stored procedure that contains an update statement.
Thanks for your help.
Thanks
Vineesh
vineesh1701

If you have set up the variable so that it contains a valid sql update, it should work. For example, see below, which does do an update
use tempdb
go
Create Table #Test(i int);
Insert #Test(i) Values(1);
go
Create Procedure TestProc As
Begin
Declare @SQL nvarchar(250);
Set @SQL = 'Update #Test Set i = 2';
--Print @SQL;
Exec sp_executesql @SQL;
End
go
Exec TestProc
-- Test Result
Select * From #Test;
go
Drop Procedure TestProc;
go
Drop Table #Test;
One thing I would recommend while testing is that you print out or select the variable that contains the dynamic sql. (Like the above code where I have a print statement. That lets you see exactly what you are executing and if there is any problem
with the update command.
As Naomi said, to get anything more than general help, you will probably have to show us your code and the parameter values you are passing when you execute the stored proc.

• Question about an UPDATE statement (Answer conflicts in two Q & A papers)

I need to know the correct answer to the below question as two exam papers provide different answers?
Q- Which two steps are performed the first time any UPDATE statement is issued after the Instance is started? (Choose any two)
A - Creating the parse tree of the statement
B - Writing the modified data blocks to the data files
C - Writing the modified data to the archived redo log files
D - Updating the control file to indicate the most recent checkpoint
E - Updating the data file header to indicate the most recent checkpoint
F- Reading the blocks to database buffer cache if they are not already there
Please help, as im preparing to give exams and such conflicts are making me even more confused.
Thanks!

Well, the order would be A, F, B, C and I'm not sure on the checkpoint info. Archived Redo would be written AFTER online Redo.

• How to use escape character in update statement.

Hi All,
I'm trying to update table using following sql update statement, but everytime it's asking me for the input due to the '&' value in below sql.
UPDATE xyz_xyz
SET NAME = 'ABC & PQR'
WHERE ID = (SELECT ID
FROM abc_abc
WHERE NAME = 'C & PQR');Please let me know how to use escape character syntax or let me know if there is any alternative solution.
Thanks,
Vishwas

Hi,
By default, & marks a substitution variable name.
If you're not using substitution variables in that statement (or, if this is in PL/SQL, in that entire package or procedure) then the easiest thing to do is just diable substitution variables; then & will be a normal character:
SELECT  DEFINE  OFF
UPDATE xyz_xyz
SET NAME = 'ABC & PQR'
WHERE ID = (SELECT ID
FROM abc_abc
WHERE NAME = 'C & PQR');
SET DEFINE ONIf you can't do that, then & is always taken literally if it comes right before a single-quote, so you could say:
UPDATE xyz_xyz
SET NAME = 'ABC &' || ' PQR'
WHERE ID = (SELECT ID
FROM abc_abc
WHERE NAME = 'C &' || ' PQR');There is a SQL*Plus "SET ESCAPE" command, too, but if you use it, you have to worry about whether the escape character is to be taken literally or not.
SET ESCAPE \Yet another alternative is to make some other character, such as ~, mark the substitution variables:
SET DEFINE ~Read all about them in the SQL*Plus manual.

• HELP! With parsing Update statement

I am stuck and need help! The teacher has not gone over parsing with us and it is not on his scheduled topics list. But, I am a person that likes to scope out and learn new things. For our final project, we have to allow updates, delete and inserts into the 5 main tables of the Premiere Products database. I have done everything except for the updates. I can achieve the updates of the entities by pretty much hardcoding them and that is okay by the teacher, but I want to learn about parsing because Barbara from this site mentioned this to me.
This is what I was able to write and I am getting errors:
CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE updatecust_proc (
v_cust_num IN customera.cust_num%TYPE,
v_attributetoupdate VARCHAR2 ,
v_updatedvalue VARCHAR2 )
AS

BEGIN
v_isvalidcustnum := iscust(v_cust_num);
IF (v_isvalidcustnum = FALSE) THEN
RAISE e_invalidcustnum_error;
END IF;
PARSE(
'UPDATE customer
SET' | | v_attributetoupdate | | '=' | | v_updatedvalue | |
'WHERE cust_num =' | | v_cust_num
END;
EXCEPTION
WHEN e_invalidcustnum_error THEN
DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('Cannot be updated. Invalid customer number');
END;
Any help would be useful. I went to the Oracle help site but their examples are a little too complicated for me to understand, plus, I am not using any C code.
Thanks in advance!
Bob

I will try putting in spaces to the areas that you mentioned to me. Thanks!
I will try to explain the function just in case some other poeple don't understand what I am trying to do.
This procedure is supposed to update the CUSTOMER entity. This entity has 7 attributes and I don't want to write out 7 UPDATE statements to changes a value. Instead, I want the name of the attribute to be passed to the proceudre so that the UPDATE statement can know which attribute to use. Barbara mentioned something about parsing and I attempted to try it out, but I am getting errors. Can someone help me with the procedure. BTW, function iscust() returns TRUE if the customer number is valid, otherwise, it returns false.
Thanks,
Bob

• Decode function in Update statement

Hello everyone,
I'm trying to write a query where I can update a pastdue_fees column in a book_trans table based on a difference between return_dte and due_dte columns.
I am using Oracle SQL. This is what I have so far for my decode function:
SQL> SELECT
2 DECODE(SIGN((return_dte - due_dte)*2),
3 '-1', '0',
4 '1', '12', 'Null')
5 FROM book_trans;
DECO
Null
12
Null
0
So the logic is that if the sign is -1, the value in return_dte column should be 0; if it's +1 then it's 12 and everything else is Null.
So now, I need to enter my decode function into the update statement to update the columns. However, I get error messages.
The logic should be:
UPDATE book_trans SET PastDue_fees = decode(expression)

Thanks!If you really really really want to update the entire table, the syntax would be...
UPDATE book_trans
SET
pastdue_fees = DECODE(SIGN((return_dte - due_dte)*2), -1, 0, 1, 12, Null);I took out all the single quotes. If you actually have a string column and you're storing entirely numbers in it then it should be declared as a NUMBER column and not a character (varchar2) column.
