Abstract methods and subclasses

I have a class, DfContainer that has a method whose return type is of an abstract class, DfObject.
There are several classes that extend the abstract class. Each of them has methods that are unique to them.
But in order to be able to execute the methods using the object returned through the method in DfContainer, I need to define each method as abstact in DfObject.
Now say, I need a method called getNames() in the class DfNames that extends DfObject, and I need a method called getRanks() in DfOrganization that also extends DfObject.
I would define those two methods as abstract in DfObject. But, I would need to add getRanks() to DfNames, and add getNames() to DfOrganization, even if I don't need them there.
That's what I'm doing right now. If I don't cast the object returned from the method in DfContainer to a subtype of DfObject, is this the correct approach?

Why don't you define an empty method body in the abstract class, that does not have to be overridden in the subclass.
An abstract class can contain fully implemented methods. You can then override them or not as you choose. You don't have to define your individual methods as abstract.
Look at the way the various listeners and adapters are done in AWT. You have a listener that's an interface, then a dummy class that provides do-nothing implementations for all methods in the interface, so when you want to override one method you only need to override that specific method, not all the methods in the interface. You should be able to do something similar.

    I'm a beginner in Java and just learn about abstract method and class.
    However, i am wondering what is the point of using abstract method/class?
    Because when I delete the abstract method and change the class name to public class XXXX( changed from "abstract class XXXX), my program still runs well, nothing goes different.
    Is it because I haven't encountered any situation that abstract method is necessary or ?

    Yes - you probably haven't encountered a situation where you need an abstract.
    Abstract classes are not designed to do anything on their own. They are designed to provide a template for other classes to extend by inheritance. What you have build sounds like a concrete class - one which you are creating instances of. Abstract classes are not designed to be ever instantiated in their pure form - they act like a partial building block, which you will complete in a class which extends the abstract.
    An example might be a button class, which provides some core functionality (like rollover, rollout etc) but has an empty action method which has to be overwritten by a relevant subclass like 'StartButton'. In general, abstract classes may not be the right answer, and many people would argue that it is better to use an interface, which can be implemented instead of extended, meaning that you can ADD instead of REPLACING.
    Not sure if that helps.. there are whole chapters in books on this kind of thing, so it's hard to explain in a couple of paragraphs. Do some google searches to find out more about how they work.

    I have an abstract class called "A" in a package called test.

Expand the access modifier of testMethod() in class A, either make it protected or public, like this...

  • Why does this abstract class and method work without implement it?

    hi,
    I have seen many times that in some examples that there are objects made from abstract classes directly. However, in all books, manual and tutorials that I've read explain that we MUST implement those methods in a subclass.
    An example of what I'm saying is the example code here . In a few words that example makes Channels (java.nio.channel) and does operations with them. My problem is in the class to make this channels, because they used the ServerSockeChannel class and socket() method directly despite they are abstracts.

    Which class does extend ServerSocketChannel? I can not see it.It may be a package-private class or a private nested class. There's no need to document that specific implementation, since you never need to use it directly.

    I have an annotation for specifiying that a method requires a transation. It's very simple, and looks like this:

    }PersistenceUnitDescriptor is a simple enum, and I use Aspect J to weave code around methods annotated with this annotation.
    When I annotate a method like this

         }It works fine, but when I annotate like this :

         }the apect code is never run.
    getPersistenceUnit() is an abstract method and it is the only thing which is different between the two cases.
    I'm not sure if this is beacuse of the annotation or because the weaving, but I thought I would ask in the annotation categroy just in case.
    Anyone got an idea as to what may be causing this?

  • Static abstract methods - how can I avoid them?

    just found out that java doesn't allow static abstract methods nor static methods in interfaces. Although I understand the reasons, I can't think of how to change my design to gain the required behavior without the need of static abstract methods.
    Here's what I want to do and how my thoughts lead to static abstract methods:
    ClassA provides access to native code (c-dll, using jna). The path to the dll can be set programmatically. Here's a draft of the class:

    I just upgraded to NetBeans 6.1 and I can't figure out how to automatically override abstract methods... I I know in older versions you could select a menu option and select abstract methods and NetBeans would put them all in for you...

    I'm sorry... I admit that I only looked quickly for a NetABeans forum and didn't find one... What is it under so I know for the future...

    I’d like to ask a question on some basic design practice.
    When there are methods which are common in some subclasses so I would like to “move them up” in the base abstract class, I would also like to make sure that the ADT concept of the base class itself is not broken. So I don’t want to have methods in the base class that are not general enough to be there. How to resolve this?
    For example I create a base abstract class Vehicle. Then I create subclasses Plane and Tanker and realize that the startEnginge() method in them is the same and in order remove the duplicated code, I can put it in Vehicle. But later there may be Bicycle or Sled subclasses which don’t need startEngine().
    In a broader sense, I would like to keep the Vehicle class as similar to the real word concept of vehicles as possible. And not evey vehicle have engine of course.
    What is the solution?
    Extending the class hierarchy by injecting another abstract class between the base and the subclasses? (e.g: VehicleWithEngine)
    I suppose I can’t use Interfaces because I need to have the common implemenations as well.

    You are talking about code.
    Instead you need to talk about the design.
    The base class represents conceptually a 'type' of something. That 'type' defines behavior. That behavior is what goes in the base class nothing else (in terms of design.)
    If you have common functionality which does not fit into the definition (design) of the 'type' then you put it in another class and use (composition) that class in the sub class.
    For example I create a base abstract class Vehicle. Then I create subclasses Plane and Tanker and realize that the startEnginge() method in them is the same and in order remove the duplicated code, I can put it in Vehicle. But later there may be Bicycle or Sled subclasses which don’t need startEngine(). No that is not how it works.
    You have specific examples of some vehicles and then you need to manage those types generically. That is the first step.
    Second step is then to determine what the exact 'type' is that you want to manage. And you use the requirements of the need to create the 'type'.
    Then you look at the specific examples to determine how they will meet the needs of the type.
    Thus if I have an application that must start the engines of all the vehicles in the city then I must have a vehicle class which has startEngine.
    But if I have an application that manages vehicles as inventory (like a retail store) and then decide that because my examples both have engines that I might as well move it into the base class. In that case there is no 'need' for the application to manage starting vehicles. The fact that both have engines is irrelevant.
    So looking back at your example you have stated functionality about your specific types but you have not stated anything about why your application needs to deal with that functionality generically.
    Another way to think about it is that you do not put the shared functionality in the base because you can but rather because you must.

  • Abstract classes and constructors - cannot call abs. methods in CONSTRUCTOR

    Let me explain the scenario:
    I'm building a program in which I need to read a file (among other things) and I intend to use object orientation to it's fullest in doing so. I thought of creating an abstract FILE class which has the commonalities, and two subclasses SERVER_FILE and PC_FILE, which implement the abstract method GET_CONTENTS in different ways (OPEN DATASET / GUI_UPLOAD), same for the CHOOSE method which allows to select the file from it's corresponding source.
    Initially I've used an interface but since another tasks like setting the file path are common for both, switched to an ABSTRACT class.
    Now, the problem is, from the main code I intend to use a FILE reference to handle either type of file. At the instantiation moment I'd like the path attribute to be set; if it was not set by parameter, i'd like to call the CHOOSE method which is abstract for the superclass. Since this is common for either subclass, I need a way to code it once in the superclass. But I get an error because the CHOOSE method is abstract.

    On a 4.6c system this code gave me a dump, while on my NW7.0 SP it doesn't even activate with the following error:

    - Following some suggestions from Java forums i've tried to define the constructor in the base class as PROTECTED or PRIVATE instead, then calling super->constructor from the subclasses, but I get this error in german:

    which Altavista translates like:

    I'm really lost on how should I code this. My main focus is on avoiding code dupplication.
    I hope someone with more OO experience can see what I'm trying to do and sheds some light.

    Dear Alejandro,
        When i saw your code, you are trying to access an astract method CHOOSE(which is actually implemented in sub class) from the constructor of the base class which is not possible.  By this time, we don't know which sub class it is refering to, so it gives an error.   I see two solutions for this..
    1.  To define constructor in sub class and call the choose method from the consturctor of the sub class(which in this case is reputation of the same again for each sub class)
    2.  Remove the calling of choose method from the constructor of the main class and call it separately(after creating the object).   By now we know which sub class we are refering to.   I would have designed the program in the following way.

    Oh, I see that the title of your post is an error message? Ok. Well, the test class is declared as implementing an ActionListener. That means the test class must have an actionPerformed() method. Your test class apparently does not.
    It does not appear that the test class needs to implement ActionListener. You are using annonymous classes as listeners.

    Check to make sure that the arguments are consistent with your ContentHandler class. Probably the wrong type.
    I think you forgot to include the skippedEntity method, it seems to be missing. Even if an implemented class has a method that you are not using, you still have to include the method in your code even if it doesn't do anything.

    Why am I getting the above compile error when I am very clearly overriding abstract method compare (ditto abstract method compareTo)?     According to the book I'm reading, if you merely take
    out the generic from the code, it should compile and
    run in v1.4 (assuming, of course, that the class
    exists in 1.4). I don't know what book you are reading but that's certainly incorrect or incomplete at least. I've manually retrofitted code to 1.4, and you'll be inserting casts as well as replacing type references with Object (or the erased type, to be more precise).
    These interfaces do exist in 1.4, and
    without the generics.Exactly. Which means compareTo takes an Object, and you should change your overriding method accordingly.
    But this raises a new question: how does my 1.4
    compiler know anything about generics? It doesn't and it can't. As the compiler is telling you, those interfaces expect Object. Think about it, you want to implement one interface which declares a method argument type of Object, in several classes, each with a different type. Obviously all of those are not valid overrides.
