Access class variables on new operator

Hi
I've created a class with a few public final int's
public class myClass(){
public final int SHOW_MENU = 1;
public final int SHOW_STATUSBAR = 2;
public myClass(int Flags){
now when I create this class I want to specify the flags by there logical names e.g SHOW_MENU,SHOW_STATUSBAR... like this
In a frame....
add(new myClass(myClass.SHOW_MENU)) ;Flags will be set to 1
The problem is that one cannot refere to the public variable SHOW_MENU until an actual instance of that class was created.
I'm sure there must be a way to do this.
Thanks
Carel

"The problem is that one cannot refere to the public variable "
Yes boy you try to acces variable of class before you create it.
You are trying to get a constant.
pass constant to constructor.
call constructor
alocate memory
initialize fields.... there should be initialised your "constant?"
create object
return refference of this object
See If youd like to call a constant it should be somewhere. In a file in a different class or in the program.

    You probably should have used the other thread:

    To add a little confusion to the matter...Class objects are in fact objects. They're objects representing classes. So, in a sense, I guess, you could say they're similar -- in each you get an object. But in practice Class objects and all other objects should be considered semantically different unless you're doing some pretty unusual stuff. Also Class.forName is more of a factory method than a constructor.

  • How to access class variables in anonymous class??.

    I have a boolean class level variable. Fom a button action , this boolean will set to true and then it used in anonymous class. In anonymous class, I am getting default value instead of true. Could u anyone help in this plzzz.

    first of all, you don't want parent because that is something that Containers use to remember their containment hierarchy. you are thinking of super which is also incorrect, because that has to do with inheritance.
    the problem here is a scoping problem. you generally would use final if you were accessing variables in an anonymous class that are in the local scope. in this case, you just need to create some test code and play with it. snip the code below and play with it. it shows both the given examples and some additional ways to change/display class variables.

  • AS3 - dynamic class names with *new* operator

    I'm using AcrtionScript 3 and Adobe Flash 9 Public Alpha.
    I have 50 movie clips in the Library that use Linkage to set
    the Class name to: Img1, Img2, Img3, ..., Img50.
    I have a parent class named RandImg. I want the constructor
    for RandImg to randomly select one of the 50 movie clips from the
    Library and display it. I could get this working by generating a
    random number, and then writing a really huge switch statement to
    associate each possible random number with its respective Library
    Movie Clip Class name, but I would much rather do this with a
    dynamic/variable class name based on the random number, such as:
    var nImgChoice:Number = Math.floor( Math.random( ) * 50 ) +
    1;
    var mcImg:MovieClip = new [ "Img"+String(nImgChoice) ] ( );
    addChild( mcImg );
    Note that this used to be possible in AS 2 by doing the
    following:
    this.attachMovie( "Img"+String(nImgChoice) , "mcImg",
    this.getNextHighestDepth());
    Suggestions?
    Thanks,
    ~JC

    import flash.display.DisplayObject;
    import flash.display.Sprite;
    import flash.utils.getDefinitionByName;
    var nImgChoice:Number = Math.floor( Math.random( ) * 50 ) +
    1;
    var ClassReference:Class =
    getDefinitionByName("Img"+String(nImgChoice) ) as
    Class;
    var instance:Object = new ClassReference();
    addChild(DisplayObject(instance));

    Is it the case that thread cannot access class variable !!

    >
    Now, my problem.
    It was solved when I substituted the line
    ProcessAppendAction run = new ProcessAppendAction(req)
    with
    ProcessAppendAction run = new ProcessAppendAction(req,port);Of course. Instance variables in Servlet instances are a no-no so passing the 'port' though an instance variable is just wrong.
    >
    That is passes port alongwith req while creating thread object.
    But still if class variables are not thread safe, then it means if I pass object 1 to thread 1.
    And then try to pass object 2 to thread 2, it might be possibility that object 1 of thread 1 might be replaced by object 2.
    So, thread 1 will get an updated value object 2.Yep - that is why you should not use instance variables in Servlets and why they are not thread safe.

    Which is not what I intend to do...:-)

  • How to access the parent class variable or object in java

    Hi Gurus,
    I encounter an issue when try to refer to parent class variable or object instance in java.
    The issue is when the child class reside in different location from the parent class as shown below.
    - ClassA and ClassB are reside in xxx.oracle.apps.inv.mo.server;
    - Derived is reside in xxx.oracle.apps.inv.mo.server.test;
    Let say ClassA and ClassB are the base / seeded class and can not be modified. How can i refer to the variable or object instance of ClassA and ClassB inside Derived class.
    package xxx.oracle.apps.inv.mo.server;
    public class ClassA {
        public int i=10;

    Hi ,
    You cannot  access the controller attribute instead create an instance of the controller class and access the attribute in the set method
    OR create a static method X in the controller class and store the value in that method. and you can access the attribute by
    Call method class=>X
    OR if the attribute is static you can access by classname=>attribute.

  • Accessing a variable defined in one class from another class..

    Greetings,
    I've only been programming in as3 for a couple months, and so far I've written several compositional classes that take MovieClips as inputs to handle behaviors and interactions in a simple game I'm creating. One problem I keep coming upon is that I'd love to access the custom variables I define within one class from another class. In the game I'm creating, Main.as is my document class, from which I invoke a class called 'Level1.as' which invokes all the other classes I've written.
    Below I've pasted my class 'DieLikeThePhishes'. For example, I would love to know the syntax for accessing the boolean variable 'phish1BeenHit' (line 31) from another class. I've tried the dot syntax you would use to access a MovieClip inside another MovieClip and it doesn't seem  to be working for me. Any ideas would be appreciated.  Thanks,

    I would approach it in much the same way as you would in java, by making getters and setters for all of your class variables.
    Getters being for returning the values, Setters being for setting them.
    So you would make a get function for the variable you want to access ala:
    function get1PhishBeenHit():boolean {
         return this.phish1BeenHit;
    Then to access the value of that variable from outwith the class:
    var result:boolean = ClassInstanceName.get1PhishBeenHit();

  • Accessing a variable form a super class

    Hi guys, its my first post in this forum, i am student and learning some java. I find it very interesting but have some problems
    My question is : How to access a variable from a superclass
    Here is my program:
    class superclass
         int i = 10, j= 20;
         void display()
         System.out.println("i in super is:" +i);
         System.out.println("j in super is:" +j);
    class child extends superclass
         int i,j;
         void display()
         System.out.println("i in child is:" +i);
         System.out.println("j in child is:" +j);
    class prgdemo
         public static void main(String args[])
         superclass s =new superclass();
         s.display();
         child c = new child();
         c.display();
    }Thanks for your replies

    This is only true of nested subclasses. Private
    fields are HIDDEN to ALL code contained outside of
    the enclosing class.You are a very bad racist man:class superclass {
         private int i = 10;
         private int j= 20;
         public class child extends superclass
              int i= 42,j= 54;

              System.out.println("super's i is:" +super.i);
              System.out.println("super's j is:" + super.j);
              System.out.println("outer's i is:" + superclass.this.i);
              System.out.println("outer's j is:" + superclass.this.j);
         void display()

  • Outer Class Accessing Inner Classes Variables

    Hi Everyone,
    Should an outer class directly access the private member variables of its inner class? Or should it get their values by calling an appropriate 'getXXX()' method?
    Just wondering.
    Thx.

    If the outer class trys to access the variable that is declared in the inner class with in a class and outside the method, then it can access in the following example
    class outer
         private int x=10;
         class inner
              int y=20;
         public void getOutput()
              inner in=new inner();
              System.out.println("The value of y is" +in.y);
         public static void main(String args[])
              outer out=new outer();
              out.getOutput();

    Hi All,
    I have one variable declared at class level i.e. global variable (non-static). In one method I am setting one value in this variable.Now I want to access this variable with this new set value in other class.
    Can anybody tell me how to do this?
    Thanks in advance.

  • How can a class access a variable on a MovieClip's time line?

    in my class I declare a linked movie clip:
    a_mc = new LinkedMC ();
    trace(a_mc.testString);
    and on the time line of LinkedMC:
    var testString = "test string";
    but I can't access testString.
    any clues?
    Thanks!

    you're trying to access the variable before it's defined.  have your LinkedMC dispatch an event letting your know the variable has been defined and assign a listener to a_mc to detect that event.  in the listener function, use your trace() function.

  • What is the Difference between ?  new Operator and Class.forName() ???

    plz tel me ....
    what is the Difference between ? new Operator and Class.forName() ??? ........

    Class.forName(), takes the class name as parameter,
    and loads that class in memory. But it doesn't create
    any instance of that class.
    That means static methods/variables are available for
    use.
    new keyword, checks if the class is loaded, if not
    then loads that class, and then creates an instance
    of that class.Class.forName actually returns the class object for that name (class - for -name). it might load it, if the class hasn't already been loaded, but it's misleading to say that's what that method does
    your definition of 'new' is wrong, too. give the dukes back

  • Accessing thirdy party class variable...

    I am pretty new to JAVA, and I was wondering if the following is doable.
    I have a class A and when it runs it invokes two different classes B and C. Is there anyway I can access a variable in B from C or vice versa? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    sincerely,
    Yosep

    accessing a 3rd party class variable?
    C.someClassVariableOr do you mean a instance variable.
    Depends on the scoping too by the way.
    Anyway way, if you want to access an instance variable, you'll have to have a reference to the object instance it's from.
