ACE 4710 - can I dynamically sticky all traffic to 1 server based on URL?

Hello all, I'm new to the ACE 4710 and need to know some details about stickyness.
As background, we are a small company with a SaaS product and a pair of webservers.
I have set up the loadbalancing default L7 Load-balancing rule to sticky based on a Cookie based Stickey Group.
That seems to be working and session traffic is sticking to a server during the user's session.
Based on a request from our outsourced developer they would like the Loadbalancer to not only sticky the users sessions, but also sticky a url to a server.
I would like this to happen dynamically as each of our clients will have their own url based on our standard domain like clientname.fixeddomain.com and I don't want to have to come back to the loadbalancer every time we add a client.
As I said, I'm new to these devices but understand the concepts, and am in the position of having to make it work little to no tranining on this hardware and no budget at this point to pay someone else for configuration and setup.
I just need to know at this point if I can stick all requests for a specific URL to a server to avoid caching issue while those sessions are active and have new connections to other client urls balanced among the webservers.

Thanks for the reply, but I cannot reach the URL you included.  It gives me a 403.
Therfore without reading the article, I wanted to ask if the proper setup would be:
1. Default L7 load-balancing action: Primary action: Sticky: Stickey Group using
Type = HTTP Header: Header name = Host
2. Server Farm: Predictor: Least Connections or Round Robin to distribute the load between the 2 web servers.
Using this setting in testing, it looks like all the traffic keeps going to 1 server only.  Granted there is not much traffic t the servers, but I have 2 different url being tested. url1.ourdomain.com & url2.ourdomain.com
If you have another link for the above document, please let me know.

    I've got 2 servers in a server farm on round robin load balancing set up. Right now, it load balances requests to www.abc.com. I would like all requests for www.abc.com/admin to go to server A all the time. What's the best way of accomplishing this? I've tried setting up stickiness with no luck so I'm not sure if that's the right approach. Thanks.

    First create class-map with your url:
    class-map type http loadbalance match-any ABC

    Next create new server-farm with only one server:

    Next modify your policy-map type load-balance:
    policy-map type loadbalance first-match POLICY.LB
      class ABC

        sticky-serverfarm STICKY.SERVERFARM.ONE
    Everything what is matched by Class-map will be forwarded to Serverfarm. Simple and very scalable.

  • ACE 4710 Can not confirm http cookie sticky connections

    We are using a ACE 4710 with A3(2.6) software release.
    I had to change our sticky load balancing method for HTTPS to cookie based.
    However while connections appear to work if I look at the sho sticky database table I can not see or confirm sticky entries for the cookie based connections.

    Another point: please check whether your servers are listening only for HTTPS traffic or also for HTTP traffic:
    in the first case the ACE will have to: decrypt the traffic from the client, inspect the http header to take the loadbalance decision and then re-encrypt it and send it to the server
    in the second case the ACE would have to: decrypt the traffic from the client, inspect the http header to take the loadbalance decision and send it out as it is unencrypted to the server
    the second solution would have the benefit of being easier to configure and to require less resoucerces both on the ACE (only decryption to be performed) and on the servers (no need for SSL operations at all there) but it might be that your company or business sector have requirements for which this traffic should never flow unencrypted, in which case you would have to go for the first solution.

    I would not expect you to have to pay extra for importing the cert and kepair into the ace, it would be just a copy, however as Alex said that may still depend on the license agreement with the CA.

  • ACE 4710 - 'reverse proxy' infront of serverfarm - fail-over/sorry server design issue

    Hi All,
    I'm working on a specific config and have an issue in the backup farm/fail-over/sorry server area.
    The customer wants the following:
    They have an existing serverfarm with X web servers, they want a single server to act as a reverse-proxy in front of the farm.
    So that all traffic goes trough that server, that server then forwards the request to the original serverfarm.
    The problem in my design is in the fail-over, if i configure the reverse-proxy server in a new serverfarm and use the original (web servers) farm as backup it has fail-over, but if the reverse-proxy AND the original serverfarm fail, there is no nice way to get the users on a sorry server.
    I could give the original serverfarms rservers a 'backup standby' server but that won't give the desired effect either.
    For maintance they first take 50% of the servers offline and switch to the other 50% after that, so then users would see a sorry page even if there where operational servers in the farm left.
    The 4710's are running routed mode, and the farms use Sticky Cookie, and also some http URL & Cookie matching is done.
    Anyone have an idea how to build this?

    It need additional testing but as per my understanding if you put the back up in this order then the last backup server will be choosen first.
    In your case it will be like " RSERVER1 >> backup sorry server >> backup web content
    As per the below example:
    I put test 2 as first backup server and test1 as second backup server but if you look at the first part it took rserver test1 as first backup.

    Configuring the Application Response Predictor
    To instruct the ACE to select the server with the lowest average response time for the specified response-time measurement based on the current connection count and server weight (if configured), use the predictor response command in server farm host or redirect configuration mode. This predictor is considered adaptive because the ACE continuously provides feedback to the load-balancing algorithm based on the behavior of the real server.
    To select the appropriate server, the ACE measures the absolute response time for each server in the server farm and averages the result over a specified number of samples (if configured). With the default weight connection option configured, the ACE also takes into account the server's average response time and current connection count. This calculation results in a connection distribution that is proportional to the average response time of the server.
    The syntax of this command is as follows:
    predictor response {app-req-to-resp | syn-to-close | syn-to-synack}[samples number]
    The keywords and arguments are as follows:
    •app-request-to-resp—Measures the response time from when the ACE sends an HTTP request to a server to the time that the ACE receives a response from the server for that request.
    •syn-to-close—Measures the response time from when the ACE sends a TCP SYN to a server to the time that the ACE receives a CLOSE from the server.
    •syn-to-synack—Measures the response time from when the ACE sends a TCP SYN to a server to the time that the ACE receives the SYN-ACK from the server.
    •samples number—(Optional) Specifies the number of samples over which you want to average the results of the response time measurement. Enter an integer from 1 to 16 in powers of 2. Valid values are 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16. The default is 8.
    For example, to configure the response predictor to load balance a request based on the response time from when the ACE sends an HTTP request to a server to when the ACE receives a response back from the server and average the results over four samples, enter:

    You can use threshold milliseconds parameter which is optional Specifies the required minimum average response time for a server. If the server response time is greater than the specified threshold value, the ACE removes the server from the load-balancing decision process (takes the server out of service).
    Enter an integer from 1 to 300000 milliseconds (5 minutes). The default is no threshold (servers are not taken out of service).
    In case if you have measures the response time from  when the ACE sends a TCP SYN to a server to the time that the ACE receives a CLOSE from the server  use syn-to-close      (already discussed previously)
    If you have to measures the response time from when the ACE sends a TCP SYN to a server to the time that the ACE receives the SYN-ACK from the server use syn-to-synack   (already discussed previously)
    SAMPLES parameter is optional and  specifies the number of samples that you want to average from the results of the response time measurement and response time is used to select the server with the lowest response time for the requested response-time measurement. If you do not specify a response-time measurement method, the ACE uses the HTTP app-req-to-response method.
    Whenever a server's load reaches zero, by default, the ACE uses the autoadjust feature to assign a maximum load value of 16000 to that server to prevent it from being flooded with new incoming connections. The ACE periodically adjusts this load value based on feedback from the server's SNMP probe and other configured options.
    Using the least-loaded predictor with the configured server weight and the current connection count option enabled, the ACE calculates the final load of a real server as follows:
    final load = weighted load × static weight × current connection count
    where:
    •weighted load is the load reported by the SNMP probe
    •static weight is the configured weight of the real server
    •current connection count is the total number of active connections to the real server
    The ACE recalculates the final load whenever the connection count changes, provided that the (config-sfarm-host-predictor) weight connection command is configured. If the (config-sfarm-host-predictor) weight connection command is not configured, the ACE updates the final load when the next load update arrives from the SNMP probe.
    If two servers have the same lowest load (either zero or nonzero), the ACE load balances the connections between the two servers in a round-robin manner.

  • Ace 4710 can I capture packets on a Load Balancer

    We have just implemented JD Edwards we have three servers front ended by ACE4710,most things are good, but I there are some reports(.CSV)generated by the system that cannot be viewed  when going through the load balancer, but ok if going directly to the server. I have logged on as a user that is getting the problem, and it is ok for me! So it looks as if it could be a PC problem, but other people think it must be the LB. is there anything like Tethereal available within the ACE that I could use to capture packets.

    There isn't a tethereal built-in to the ACE, but you can capture packets.
    You need to create an ACL to identify the interesting traffic and then use the capture command. This is documented in the command reference guide.
    When you stop the capture copy the file from flash to disk0: ('copy capture disk0:') The copying converts the capture into a pcap format file readable with any sniffer tool like wireshark. You'll need to download the file from disk0: to a workstation to be able to run wireshark against it.

  • How can I dynamically alter search spec for results set based on parameter

    We have defined a string parameter in BIP as p_lastName.
    We pass this to our RTF template in $p_lastName, definition in RTF as per below:

    We want to include this data in a table based on our dataset but applying the parameter as a search criteria - in the form of
    <?for-each:/DATA/XML/DATA_FEED/row[LAST_NAME= $p_lastName]?>
    Our issue arises if user does not enter any value in the $p_lastName. In this way the comparison becomes = '%' which will not return any records.
    If there is a LIKE operator in XSL we could use that.
    Would appreciate anyones assistance?

  • ACE 4710 and load balancing with sticky cookie

    Configuring load balancing with SSL termination and stickiness for a couple of citrix xenapp servers.  I'm doing a source-NAT as the ACE resides in the DMZ and these particular servers reside on the inside arm of the firewall.  The ACE is in bridged mode to load balance web servers that reside in the DMZ.  Everything seems to work just fine, but the cookie stickiness does not seem to be working.

    As you may know, using Wireshark to look at an HTTPS capture is only useful if you've installed the server SSL key.This is why I find it easier to use something like LiveHTTPHeaders or HTTPWatch.
    When using cookie-insert, the ACE will not create any dynamic cookie entries.  It will simply create one static entry for each rserver with a cookie value, such as R3911631338, and any client that gets load balanced to that rserver will receive a cookie with that value.  So what you see there is what is expected.
    You are correct in that when using location cookies that the server supplies, the ACE will create a dynamic entry when it sees the server response with the cookie.   The cookie is included in the server's response, and the ACE will look for the value as configured.  The cookie will also be sent to the client.  If the cookie is not in the server's first response, you will need enable persistence-rebalance so that it will look in subsequent server responses.  If the browser opens new connections with that cookie, then the ACE will stick to the same server.
    My suggestion would be to get sticky working with cookie-insert first.  Then if that meets your needs, go with that permanently.  If you need to use server cookies, then once cookie insert is working, migrate your sticky to cookie location.

    Hello,
    I have a requirement to load balance between real servers on different subnets, but I need to preserve the original source IP address through the ACE.  I know the ACE can do Asymmetric server normalization but that appears to require the servers to be on the same subnet.  The traffic is just generic TCP and I don't want the ACE to take any action on the traffic other than to do basic balancing and allow me to direct all traffic to one server or the other for maintenance.  Is there any way to accomplish routed load balancing that preserves the original source IP?

    Very simple !!
    When you need the same user to be always sent to the same server, you need some sort of stickyness.
    There are many different ways to achieve this.
    Some predictor algorithms will by definition always select the same server for a given client.  This is the case with the source ip hashing predictor.
    But very often you will need to configure a sticky method in combination with your predictor algorithm.
    What is the source ip hash predictor a sticky method ?
    Actually, this is not a sticky method.  But since the hash algorithm always give the same result for a given source ip address, it guarantees that a client using the same ip address will always be sent to the same server.
    The advantage is that it does not require to configure a specific sticky method.  It also works without the need for a sticky table.  So it does preserve resources.
    But the hash function will have different results when you add or remove a server.  Therefore, when your rserver list is modified your clients might be sent to different servers breaking stickyness.
    Is sticky source ip a good solution ?
    Because of the changing hash results mentioned above, most people will prefer to use a standard predictor (roundrobin , leastconn, ...) and add a sticky source ip option.
    The idea is to also use the source ip address to identify the client and select the corresponding server.
    Unlike the hash method, the stick source ip solution will need sticky resources to save the information necessary for ACE to remember which client uses which server.
    The advantage of the sticky option is that the sticky table is not affected when the rserver list is modified.
    Why not use sticky source ip ?
    Very often this solution is enough to guarantee stickyness.
    But because a lot of clients do not have a static ip address, this method does not work.
    There is also the problem of proxy servers hiding many clients behind a single ip address resulting in rserver overload when using sticky source ip.
    For HTTP the solution is to use information contained in the client HTTP request and server HTTP response.
    An HTTP Cookie is an object used by a server to identify HTTP clients.  A loadbalancer can therefore also use this information to map a client to a server.
    One drawback of hash predictor is that the hash predictor methods do not recognize the weight value you configure for real servers. The ACE uses the weight that you assign to real servers only in the round-robin and least-connections predictor methods.
    Here is the hash algorithm
    ((_key) + (_key >> 8) + (_key >> 16) + (_key >> 24))The _key in this case is the source ip address has an unsigned 32 bits number.You then do rserver_index = hash % number_of_rserver.
    Session persistence (stickiness) based on client source IP address or HTTP cookies are recommended to be configured on the Cisco ACE for this flow.
    IP Address Stickiness
    You can use the source IP address, the destination IP address, or both to uniquely identify individual clients and their requests for stickiness purposes based on their IP netmask. However, if an enterprise or a service provider uses a megaproxy to establish client connections to the Internet, the source IP address no longer is a reliable indicator of the true source of the request. In this case, you can use cookies or one of the other sticky methods to ensure session persistence.

    ACE, can't modify the url.
    But it can send redirect.
    So you could build 3 redirect rservers, and have ACE loadbalance between them.

    But even if it works, this does not sound good.
    It seems like a design done by an application server person who does not know how network loadbalancers work.
    It seems like all you need is stickyness, which you are trying to achieve by redirecting to /1 or /2 or /3.
    But this can be done differently with cookies or by just doing stickyness on source ip address.

  • ACE 4710: Config Allows all traffic except large HTTP downloads

    Hi Folks,
    Got an ACE 4710 with a basic config that seems to work for all traffic except large downloads.
    I've attached the current config
    As I mentioned I can do normal HTTP to a standard destination like google or SSH through the ACE or ICMP
    If i try to get a large file from the server side of ACE, then a trace shows that the first and subsequent 1460Byte packets dont go through ACE
    I've thought of parse lengths, but i cannot see any that seem to affect the generic L4 maps that I am trying to use

    I've seen a similar fault. I suppose a lower MSS was sent in the TCP SYN handshake packets (1300 or 1380?) and the packets exceeding that value were dropped by the ACE. This is the default behavior which can be switched to a less strict mode by either
    exceed-mss allow
    or
    no normalization
    commands.
    In our case, a linux web server was whose replies wouldn't keep to the MSS limit.

  • Rservers initiated traffic not sourcing the traffic as VIP in Ace 4710

    One of the feature of our application is that our Application Server initiate text message to our devices sourcing from UDP 1120 and device need to see the message come from a specific pubic IP (2.2.2.2) with UDP port 1120 and reply back with the same Public IP (2.2.2.2) with UDP port 1120.The problem is we can make that happen if we have only one server in our ACE Serverfarm when we do a SNAT the real servers with the VIP address (10.1.246.32) but it does not work when we have more than one server in the Serverfarm. Since we have 2 servers, i cannot nat the real servers with the VIP address, if I do a PAT, obviously it is changing the source port of the request.
    Note: This setup is working fine with the Cisco Content Switch module running on chasis 6509. When I sniff the traffic initiated from the server coming the CSM load balancer, it is sourcing the traffic as the VIP and the source port remains the same by default but this is not the case with ACE 4710

    I see in CSS, they are able to nat the source ip address with VIP and port-mapping diabled. How do I implement
    portmap disable in ACE 4710
    Disabling Port Mapping
    By default, the CSS NATs source IP addresses and PATs source ports for a configured source group. If you configure the portmap disablecommand in a source group, the CSS performs NAT on the source IP addresses but does not perform PAT on the source ports of UDP traffic that matches on that source group.
    For UDP applications with high-numbered assigned ports (for example, SIP and WAP), we recommend that you preserve those port numbers by configuring destination services in source groups instead of using the portmap disable command.     I think you have an HW appliance (code: ACE-4710-K9) with one a la carte license ( ACE-AP-01-LIC).
    You bought a Bundle upgrade license, and  this is not compatibly with you current license ( a la carte license).
    To use the  ACE-4710-BUN-UP2= ( 1G Bundle to 2G Bundle Upgrade License) you need to have a bundle product like the
    ACE-4710-1F-K9.
