ACE 4710 MAC Address

All physical interfaces on ACE 4710 share the same MAC address. Also, VIP addresses share the same MAC address. ACE 4710 is connected to a switch. How is the switch supposed to know which interface to send the packet to if it is doing layer2 switching.
Thank you in advance for the explanation.

You can't put 2 interfaces in the same vlan
switch/Admin(config-if)# switchport access vlan 20
vlan 20 is associated with GigabitEthernet 1/3.
switch/Admin(config-if)#
So, the L2 switch will have an entry for the mac-address in each vlan and this entry can point to different interfaces.

We're running ACE SM and seeing all the VIP addresses, NAT addresses and alias addresses in the ARP table below  being assigned the same virtual MAC address. How then would a packet find the correct source/destination if all these MAC addresses are the same?

ACE uses the concept of Virtual Mac Addresses , which are the addresses used for VIP addresses, NAT addresses (dynamic and static), and alias addresses These will all always use a MAC address in the following form 00.0b.fc.fe.1b.
If you are using single ACE SM in a cat6k box, and you are seeing duplicate MAC, its normal. Cat6k Supervisor is L2 Adjacent with ACE, Any traffic received by Supervisor in VLAN 810 will be sent to ACE and then ACE will determine which VIP that packet is going to.
Real Problem will come when you are using multiple ACE modules in Same Chassis or you are doing Chassis to Chassis ACE Redundancy. In such situation your Cat6k Switch will have duplicate MAC entries.
To avoid this, you need to keep your Contexts in diffrent context groups in each Module i.e something like this
    ft group 5
      peer 1
      priority X
      associate-context default3

  • ACE multiple mac-address for a single IP (solaris ipmp)

    Dear All,
We are triing to load ballance smtp traffic to solaris mail servers that are using ip multipath in bridge mode configuration.Multipath is configured so that only one of the redundant interfaces replies to arp request. Therefore all of the traffic come to the solaris from the ACE on the primary interface, but solaris uses the secondary interface too with different mac address to answer. The load ballancing working correctly it does not matter if solaris answers the request with its primary (MAC known by ACE) or secondary interface (MAC not know by ACE). But if the solaris wants to create a tcp session that is not balanced but go through the ACE with secondary interface which mac-address is not know by ARP in the ACE, the packets are silently discarded. There is no logs about it.
Please if someone could know this behavior answer.
    Regards,
    szicsu

If you do a 'show np 1 me-stat '-socm'' you will see a counter catching the packet drops.

We can't setup connection for unknown mac-address or if we do not have a route.
We need to first learn the mac-address through the arp request/response mechanism.
This is during this process that the encap id is associated with the mac-address.
Without that encapid we can't create the connection to flow the traffic.
You can try to disable normalization to see if that could help, but I can't guarantee it.

  • ACE How can we do a static arp to multicast mac address?

I have a architecture that uses ACE to do Firewall Load Balancing. I need to add a static map of a VIP IP to a multicast mac address (Microsoft servers with NLB in multicast mode). The ACE does not accept multicast mac address in the static arp statement, anybody knows why? Is there any other way to do that?
    Regards,
    Artur Pinto

    Hi,
The ACE doesn't support multicast MAC addresses. This is a limitation impose by the hardware used on the boards. Syed has previously proposed a workaround at https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/464174#464174 . I don't know if that will be applicable in your case.

  • Rservers initiated traffic not sourcing the traffic as VIP in Ace 4710

One of the feature of our application is that our Application Server initiate text message to our devices sourcing from UDP 1120 and device need to see the message come from a specific pubic IP (2.2.2.2) with UDP port 1120 and reply back with the same Public IP (2.2.2.2) with UDP port 1120.The problem is we can make that happen if we have only one server in our ACE Serverfarm when we do a SNAT the real servers with the VIP address (10.1.246.32) but it does not work when we have more than one server in the Serverfarm. Since we have 2 servers, i cannot nat the real servers with the VIP address, if I do a PAT, obviously it is changing the source port of the request.
Note: This setup is working fine with the Cisco Content Switch module running on chasis 6509. When I sniff the traffic initiated from the server coming the CSM load balancer, it is sourcing the traffic as the VIP and the source port remains the same by default but this is not the case with ACE 4710

I see in CSS, they are able to nat the source ip address with VIP and port-mapping diabled. How do I implement
    portmap disable in ACE 4710
    Disabling Port Mapping
By default, the CSS NATs source IP addresses and PATs source ports for a configured source group. If you configure the portmap disablecommand in a source group, the CSS performs NAT on the source IP addresses but does not perform PAT on the source ports of UDP traffic that matches on that source group.
For UDP applications with high-numbered assigned ports (for example, SIP and WAP), we recommend that you preserve those port numbers by configuring destination services in source groups instead of using the portmap disable command. Destination services cause the CSS to NAT the client source ports, but not the destination ports. For information about configuring destination services,

  • ACE 4710 Active/Active using virtual partitions

    Hi
    I am completely new to the Cisco ACE devices but have been asked to look at deploying them.  I have read the ACE virtual partioning paper which covers the ACE module, and it mentions the following;
"In an active/active high-availability design, both the primary and backup Cisco ACE modules are active simultaneously. The active virtual partitions are distributed across both modules, such that approximately half are active on the primary module and the remaining are active on the backup module."
My question is - does the same resilience model work the same using the Cisco 4710 appliances?  I.e. can we split virtual partions across two physical devices thereby having an active/active scenario.
Apologies if this seems a very basic question.
    Cheers
    TS

    Hi Tony
Yes, you can do the same on Appliance. One point which can be important for A/A implementation is that it's a good practice to have shared-vlan-hostid configured on ACEs.
Briefly - When ACE boots it randomly picks up a one out of 16 pools of MAC addresses and use them on interfaces. So, if you have contexts which are sharing the same VLAN on different ACEs , there is a possibility that both of ACEs pick up the same pool and you will have duplicated MAC addresses.
So you should configure something like this in Admin context (only on ACE which has Admin context active, configuration starts working only after reload of both devices) :
    shared-vlan-hostid 1
    peer shared-vlan-hostid 2
More detailed abou this quesiton you can see here :

  • Ace 4710 strange behaviour

Hi, We have two ACE-4710-K9 (named LB01 and LB02) configured in HA mode. Besides Admin, on each of them there are tree context configured, named, ACADEMIC, COMMERCIAL, STREAMING. On LB01 the active context is ACADEMIC. On LB02 the active contexts are COMMERCIAL and STREAMING. Each context is configured with a FrontEnd and a BackEnd Vlan interface, and a "management" Vlan interface used for accessing and monitoring the device and for the downloading of the needed ssl certificates. Recently we upgraded the devices to Version A3(2.6) form a previous A3(2.4). After that upgrade we experienced some strange behaviour. From the context in STANDBY state we are not able to ping the host on the "management" Vlan interface, while there is no problem on the other Vlans. We see that the ICMP packets are sent to the Vlan, are replayed by the remote host BUT are not received at all on the LB01 or LB02. No messages in the log. Trying with 5 consecutive (failed) ping we can see that the counters of unicast packet output on LB01/LB02 Vlan is incremented by 5 BUT the unicast packets input counters is unchanged even if the remote host sent the replays. In the STREAMING context this behaviour isn't constant, ie the ping *sometimes* starts working for a few second and then returns to stop. In the other standby context the ping never works instead. In the active context all works fine. This strange problem prevents us to load the ssl certificates in the STANDBY context from the "management" Vlan. We was not able to find any reference to a similar problem in the Cisco documentation or Tac collection, so we are curious to know wheter someone else experienced such a behaviour. Thank you and best regards. Alessandro Asson - CINECA

    Thanks,
I see you are using shared VLAN config in both ACE.
Same VLAN 1000 is used for both Admin and streaming context.
In this config, you may need to use the shared-vlan-host-id command as explained here:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/data_center_app_services/ace_appliances/vA3_1_0/configuration/routing_bridging/guide/vlansif.html#wp1025243
    In fact as explained:
'By default, the bank of MAC addresses that the ACE uses is randomly selected at boot time. However, if you configure two ACE appliances in the same Layer 2 network and they are using shared VLANs, the ACEs may select the same address bank, which results in the use of the same MAC addresses. To avoid this conflict, you must configure the bank that the ACEs will use.'
This would also reply to your question in the readme file:
SHOW ARP TABLE ON THE D01,D02,D07 ROUTERS SHOWS THE SAME MAC ADDRESS FOR
BOTH IP ADDRESSES OF LB01 AND LB02: is that normal ??
    Hope this helps,
    Dom.

  • ACE 4710 FT failover failure

    Hello,
I am running redundant ACE 4710 appliances running A3(2.7).  I have five FT groups configured along with FT Tracking and when the vlans fail due to physical links being down, the contexts to do not failover.  If one of the ACE boxes fail completely, failover works fine.  I have included the FT config from one of the contexts below.  I have a case open with TAC and the Engineer is suggesting the use of a query interface in additon to FT Tracking.  We have had two incidents on separate contexts where we lost a physical interface on the primary ACE, one for the maintenance of the core switch, the other was a cable disconnect and we are unable to understand why the indivdual context didn't failover.  Any ideas would be much appreciated.  Let me know if more info/configs are needed.

    Dave,
For tracking to work you need to have preempt enabled. Can you try enabling preempt under the ft group and test your tracking again? Another potential issue you may run into is if your tracking is not lowering the priority enough when it fails. The difference between the active and standby device is 100. If you are not decrementing the priority greater than this value even if priority is enabled it will not lower it enough to force the failover. If after enabling preempt on this group the tracking still does not work as expected send you whole config for us to look at.
Regarding the query interface; This is not a bad idea. It will help prevent an active active situation if there is a problem with the ft link between the two modules.
    Thanks
    Jim

  • Need help to Configure Cisco ACE 4710 Cluster Deployment

    Dear Experts,
I'm newbie for Cisco ACE 4710, and still I'm in learning stage. Meanwhile I got chance at my work place to deploy a Cisco ACE 4710 cluster which should load balance the traffic between  two Application Servers based on HTTP and HTTPS traffic. So I was looking for good deployment guide in Cisco SBA knowledge base then finall found this guide.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/solutions/SBA/February2013/Cisco_SBA_DC_AdvancedServer-LoadBalancingDeploymentGuide-Feb2013.pdf
This guide totally fine with my required deployment model. I have same deployment environment as this guide contains with ACE cluster that connects to two Cisco 3750X (Stack) switches. But I have some confusion places in this guide
This guide follow the "One-armed mode" as a deployment method. But when I go through it further I have noticed that they have configured server VLAN as a 10.4.49.0/24 (all servers reside in it) and Client side VIP also in same VLAN which is 10.4.49.100/24 (even NAT pool also).
My confusion is, as I have learned about Cisco ACE 4710 one-armed mode deployment method, it should has two VLAN segments, one for Client side which client request come and hit the VIP and then second one for Server side. which means besically two VLANs. So please be kind enough to go through above document then tell me where is wrong, what shoud I need to do for the best. Please this is an urgent, so need your help quickly.
    Thanks....!

    Dear Kanwal,
I need quick help for you. Following are the Application LB requirements which I received from my clinet side.
Following detail required for configuring Oracle EBS Apps tier on HA:
LBR IP and Name required to configure EBS APPS Tier (i.e, ap1ebs & ap2ebs nodes)
Suggested IP and Name for LBR:
    IP : 172.25.45.x [should be on same 172.25.45 subnet of ap1ebs & ap2ebs nodes]
ebiz.xxxx.lk [on port 80 for http protocol accessibility]
This LBR IP & name must be resolve and respond on DNS network
Server Farm detail for LBR Setup
Following detail will be use for configuring the LBR:
    LBR IP and Name :
    IP : 172.25.45.x [should be on same 172.25.45 subnet of ap1ebs & ap2ebs nodes]
ebiz.xxxx.lk [on port 80 for http protocol accessibility]
This LBR IP & name must be resolve and respond on DNS network
Server Farm Detail for LBR setup:
    Server 1 (EBS App1 Node, ap1ebs):
    IP : 172.25.45.19
Server Name: ap1ebs.xxxx.lk [ap1ebs hostname is an example, actual hostname will be use]
    Protocol: http
    Port: 8000
    Server 2 (EBS App2 Node, ap2ebs):
    IP : 172.25.45.20
Server Name: ap2ebs.xxxx.lk [ap2ebs hostname is an example, actual hostname will be use]
    Protocol: http
    Port: 8000
Since my client needs to access URL ebiz.xxxx.lk which should be resolved by IP 172.25.45.21 (virtual IP) via http (80) before they deploy the app on the two servers I just ran web service on both servers (Linux) and was trying to access http://172.25.45.21 it was working fine and gave me index.html page. Now after my client has deployed the application then when he tries to access the page http://172.25.45.21 he cannot see his main login page. But still my testing web servers are there on both servers when I type http://172.25.45.21 it will get index.html page, but not my client web login page. What can I do for this ?
Following are my latest config :

  • ACE 4710 in bridge mode not working

I am trying to configure ACE 4710 bridge mode and I am stuck up in physical interface configuration. I have configured gig1/2 of ACE as trunk port and on layer 2 switch I have assigned that interface (gig1/2) to VLAN 11. I tried trunk port also but it got disabled due to BPDU error.

" I tried trunk port also but it got disabled"   <----- if your L2 config is not correct, nothing will work.
What is the setup on the switch ? Trunk or access vlan ?
What is the status of the interface ? up ? down ?
Do you see something in your arp table ?
    Gilles.

  • ACE 4710 HTTP Probes

Using the ACE 4710 for loadbalancing a Sharepoint site.
We currently have a HTTP probe setup to check the port 80 status of the rserver.
Is there anyway to get the HTTP probe to check a DNS entry for each of the application sites? For instance http://info vs http://site are two different web sites running on the same IP. One site could have a problem but the actual port 80 for the IP may be still alive.
    Thanks for any information.

Has anyone figure this out?  I am tring to get healthchecks/probes setup in this same fashion.  I have 2 servers with 1 IP but have many sites.  I want to probe each side and ensure I get a 200 code.  I also have to provide credentials to the site.  It seems that if i open IE I can log in just fine to the site with the credentials.  However there is an active x control box that is wanting to be installed.  When I set this up on my ACE it seems I am getting a http 401 unauthorized error.  I have done a wireshark capture while I was browsing and I see the 401 however it also reports a 200 code after that.  Do you think this is a problem because of the active x control wanting to be downloaded?  Or is this an issue with the first http code that is recieved by the probe, that being the 401 and then the 200? Below is my config (cleaned of course).

  • ACE 4710 - Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage randomly

We have a ACE 4710 with a basic config, (see below).
When clicking on a tab from a window within Interent explorer we occasionally get an issue with it returning: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" The details show "Access is denied" accessing a particular line of a javascript file.
We have put one web server out of service in the farm to make sure that this isn't a result of stickyness not quite working.
We have tested extensively by going directly to the web server directly without the load balancer and cannot reproduce the problem but we can produce the issue within a few minutes when going to the load balanced address.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • Configuring ACE 4710 for Load Balancing Speech servers

Hello, I'm configuring ACE 4710's for the first time and I want to load balance my Nuance speech servers on port 554. Here's my configuration on ACE01:
    hostname ace471001
    interface gigabitEthernet 1/1
      switchport access vlan 1000
      no shutdown
    interface gigabitEthernet 1/2
      shutdown
    interface gigabitEthernet 1/3
      shutdown
    interface gigabitEthernet 1/4
      shutdown
access-list ALL line 8 extended permit ip any any
    rserver host nss01
    class-map type management match-any remote_access
      2 match protocol xml-https any
      3 match protocol icmp any
      4 match protocol telnet any
      5 match protocol ssh any
      6 match protocol http any
      7 match protocol https any
      8 match protocol snmp any
    policy-map type management first-match remote_mgmt_allow_policy
      class remote_access
        permit
    interface vlan 1000
      ip address 10.20.17.21 255.255.248.0
      access-group input ALL
      service-policy input remote_mgmt_allow_policy
      no shutdown
How would I configure my speech server to isten on 554?
    Thanks in advance

    Hello Reginald
Currently you have only basic network configuration, there is no loadbalancing config
I'm not sure what exactly you're asking about , but basically you need to have
    - real servers configured on ACE (
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/data_center_app_services/ace_appliances/vA3_1_0/configuration/slb/guide/rsfarms.html#wp999495)
    - serverfarm configured on ACE (
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/data_center_app_services/ace_appliances/vA3_1_0/configuration/slb/guide/rsfarms.html#wp1014522)
    - L7 policy map (
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/data_center_app_services/ace_appliances/vA3_1_0/configuration/slb/guide/classlb.html#wp1171109 ,
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/data_center_app_services/ace_appliances/vA3_1_0/configuration/slb/guide/classlb.html#wp1027248 )
    - L4 policy map , class-map (
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/data_center_app_services/ace_appliances/vA3_1_0/configuration/slb/guide/classlb.html#wp1027819)
And then apply it on necessary interface.
This is a general configuration, in your specific case you may need to configure some additinal features (e.g. I think you will need to have stickiness enabled
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/data_center_app_services/ace_appliances/vA3_1_0/configuration/slb/guide/sticky.html but it depends on your application)
links are for old config guids , but basic is pretty much the same for all versions.
Please check them and try to narrow down your question a bit.
