Acro Reader No Longer Opens Media on Internet

I have a website, www.vincentasl.info, long in operation, that provides access to PDFs containing embedded audio and video clips. It has worked successfully for years, but after a delay during which I did not confirm it operation, I recently noticed that its media will no longer play. One does not even see the cursor change to a pointing finger when hovering over the links to them (links in the form of icons, either of a speaker or a movie clip on the page). The same PDFs - and all the media clips embedded in them - work fine when played on my local PC. However, even on my own PC, when I bring up the same website code via localhost I get the same result: the cursor does not even change to a pointing finger.
Is this a recently added security block of some kind? I'm aware that you're trying to get rid of legacy media, but your own built-in media player simply will not do for my purpose. The only complaint I have about the audio is that I find my own interface much more appealing. But the problems with video (and I have many hundreds of video clips to display since this website is merely a start!) are more serious.
They are twofold:
(1) My users need to be able to view the videos frame-by-frame; when last I checked, that ability was not available in your player.
(2) My video clips need subtitles, and your controls obscure them.
The reasons for this are that the great bulk of these videos are of sentences in American Sign Language, and my users will be fellow linguists who have no knowledge of the language. They will need translations of each sign in the subtitles, and the ability to view the clips frame-by-frame is necessary so that they can study the subtle eyebrow raises, head tilts, etc. that are crucial to the signed message.
Until now, these problems have been olved in the Quicktime videos that I embed as legacy media.
Please tell me there's some way around this problem! Perhaps an earlier version of Acrobat Reader that I can tell my users to use?

Below is how it is being done.  This worked perfectly for years. MS Office 2007 does complain that the file extension does not match the data format (it's a tab delimited text file but I'm pretending it's an Excel file so they'll be prompted to view it as a spreadsheet in Excel) but you just click open and it works fine.  This issue with IE is new.  Let me know if you have any more ideas.

  • Adobe reader won't open and closes internet when trying to open a pdf

I'm not sure when it started, but for the last 2 weeks every time I try to open a pdf file on the internet it stops and says "internet Explorer has stopped working" and will then close the window.  I thought it was just a cable (internet connection) problem since we had been having issues in that area, but now that's fixed and I still cannot open a pdf on the internet.  I uninstallled and restarted and re-installled Adobe Reader and I can't even open Adobe Reader much less a pdf from the internet.  Please help!  I've also tried installing Safari and it has the same results.  I'm sure it has to do with my Reader, but I just don't know how to fix it.

I finally uninstalled Adobe Reader and found a free pdf reader program.  At least now I can save the file I want to look at and can
open it with the other program.  Thanks for all your suggestions and help.  I learned a lot of new things.  Sorry Adobe... your loss

Operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium, Adobe Reader XI 11.0.07.  When trying to open file I get msg "You did'nt login or your session has expired. So I log in but that prompts me to give the name of the file I want to export or convert to Word or something else, which is not what I want to do of course. I have not purchased any service from Adobe or Acrobat as I only need to read. Thanks for your help..

  • When I want to attach a photo to my e-mail I can no longer find my iPhoto library using open - media - photos.

So starting recently (last couple of months) when I want to attach a photo to my e-mail I can no longer find my iPhoto library using open - media - photos.  There's nothing there, it's just completely blank, when in the past my whole iPhoto library would show up with thumbnails and I could just choose the pic to attach.  Now I have to drag the photos I want from iPhoto onto the desktop and then I can find them there to attach to my e-mail.  How can I get my iPhoto library to show back up the simple way when I want to attach photos?  I've been having this problem attaching photos in hotmail or yahoo.

It should be an attachment.  Your Mac just displays a preview of certain attachments (such as .pdfs) in the body of the message.  A PC, for example, will see it as an attached file rather than a preview.
You can save the attachment on your Mac by Control-clicking on it and selecting Save Attachment.

To configure the browser to use Acrobat or Adobe Reader to open PDF files:
    1. Quit Internet Explorer(any other browser)
    2. Start Acrobat or Adobe Reader.
    3. Choose Edit > Preferences.
    4. Select Internet in the list on the left.
    5. Deselect(Uncheck) Display PDF in Browser, and click OK.
    6. Restart Internet Explorer

  • IMac can no longer open .jpg .jpeg & other media files sent from PC?

I can no longer open .jpg photos & media files sent to my iMac from my wife's PC through Outlook email. I get an error message saying the item cannot be opened. All other recipients have no trouble opening these attachments. We have tried numerous fixes suggested by Apple chat sites but to no avail. I suspect an OS update around December 2010 has caused this problem on not just our machine but thousands of other iMac users & Apple is ignoring it. Why isn't Apple addressing this huge issue?

Likely, because there are millions of Mac users, and not everyone is experiencing this issue.   Until it happens to all Mac users with a specific system, it will be very difficult to isolate the cause.

I just downloaded iOS 6 on my iPhone 4 and now can no longer open internet links that were texted to me.  Anyone else having the same problem or know how to fix this?

The SMS links thing is highly annoying. You don't have to copy/paste however. You should see an icon like this: (>) to the right of the text bubble with the link. Tap on that, the in the screen that opens, tap "Visit".
Alternatively, you can tap twice directly on the link, then hold your finger down after the second tap.
Still unnecessarily difficult, but not as bad as copy/paste.
What I don't get is why can't I find any mention of this change or how to fix it (if even possible) elsewhere online?

I have a client that uses Windows that has recently told me she can no longer open the PDFs I send her. I can't find this elusive "Always Send Windows-Friendly Attachments" setting that I have read may solve my problem. Can someone get me there?

    Dear Dan,
It was from InDesign that I was creating the shared pdfs. I was one of two Mac drivers in a corporate sea of Win users and had to make the change I mentioned in order for the Win users to see my pdfs for review. The difference from what you appear to be doing was that were all on an MS Exchange Server so the files were shared over the company's Exchange Server e-mail system. However, some of these files occasionally went to outside users via regular e-mail and those people had no issues either.
So what I did was tested and worked for years.
You might look at the Adobe forums or Knowledge Base to see if that is a reported issue with newer version of CS. I was on CS2 when I was doing this, and the other Mac driver was on CS3 but had no problems either.
Some Win users I've talked to find a problem opening some pdfs (not mine) in general and found they had to open Reader first and them open the file from Reader's File menu. That most often happened if the client was using an outdated version of Reader.

winmail.dat files usually mean the email has been sent in rich text format - you could either the person who sent it to send it in a different format e.g. plain text or HTML, or there are a few apps in the store that support it (search for winmail.date in the store).

When Mozilla Firefox last automatically updated, it suggested that Adobe Reader needed updating. After updating to Adobe Reader 8, I can no longer print from the internet, only to a file. I know the printer and its interface must be OK because Word prints normally.

Problem solved, it was my oversight, I had not removed the check from the Print to File box in the print set up.

If you have a tablet that runs full Windows 8 - not Windows 8 RT, which is limited.
And if you install the full Adobe Reader for Windows, not the special Adobe Reader Touch for Windows 8.
Then you will have the same features as a desktop.
Unless they can't be accessed in touch mode, since it isn't a touch app.

  • Problems opening a PDF in Acro Reader 8 with BuddyAPI?

I apologize in advance for not having enough information to
properly diagnosis this situation, I’m encountering
considerable resistance from others in my company to go back to the
client and ask for additional details, but here’s the
    situation:
We’ve got a project out in the field that opens PDF
files using BuddyAPI (code below) … it worked fine when the
client machines were all using Acro Reader 7.x Some time during the
year the client’s IT department upgraded everyone to Acro
Reader 8.x, now it works on some machines and not on others. I
don’t know how many machines it doesn’t work on, at
least one, probably two (vs 4000 copies of the project out in the
field). What do I mean by “doesn’t work”
…well, I’m not really sure … when I ask if the
client can open the PDFs directly, outside of our app, I get an
answer similar to “yeah, they must have tried that …
just post the question on the forum” … I also
don’t know if an error is generated, I’m told simply
the PDFs don’t open, although if an error were generated I
would think someone would mention it. Sorry to vent, I know
it’s not much to work with, but if someone else has a similar
problem I’d love to know about it.
BTW: I’ve got 3 machines here in the office all with
Acro Reader 8, works fine on all of them.

    Hi all,
I just posted this in anotehr thread dealing with the same
    issue.
I have emailed Gary who develops the Buddy API Xtra and he
    did some
testing and this is what he reported.
It seems that when Adobe install Reader 8.0, they don't
    implement an
'Open' association, but a 'Read' one. If you right click on a
    .pdf file
you will see that the actions available don't include Open.
    Now, this
should only affect people using an older version of Buddy,
    that was
something changed for Acrobat 7 and .fdf files, so that if
    there wasn't
a Open action, it used the default one instead. So the best
    option is to
use the current version of Buddy. But to make it work with
    programs
still older buddy that can't be changed, it should be
    possible to write
a .reg script or updater to add the Open command to the list
    of actions,
then older version of buddy will work. You can use this
    script in a
projector to update the registry so that pdf files will open.
    So that
could be used in a updater projector.
    on setAcroOpenReg
    str = baReadRegString(
    "Applications\AcroRD32.exe\shell\Read\command",
    "", "", "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT" )
    if length( str ) > 0 then
    baWriteRegString(
    "Applications\AcroRD32.exe\shell\Open\command",
    "", str, "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT" )
    end if
    end
    Hope that helps.

  • PDFs no longer open within Firefox (Reader X)

I installed Reader X today.  Since doing so, Adobe Reader no longer integrates with Firefox (3.6.13).  When I click on a pdf document, it downloads and Reader opens it in a separate application window.  Any suggestions as to how I get it to open the document within Firefox/
    Thanks!

    1.  How are you trying to open it in firefox? Are you dragging and dropping  on firefox window or trying to open from File -> Open?
I have tried opening files in all ways.  Drag/drop, file|open and clicking on links . . . none open.
    2. What do you mean by separate application window here? Are you talking about standalone reader application.
I mean that Reader opens as a separate application outside of Firefox. However, after trying to fix the problem yesterday, I cannot open pdfs at all.  Firefox simply crashes and nothing opens.
Can you try repairing Reader once?
Yes, I did this to no effect.  I also completely uninstalled Reader and reinstalled.  No help there either.
    Thanks for your help.
