Acrobat 9 crashes browser

When trying to open pdf documents in a browser window, Acrobat 9 and Acrobat Reader 9 both cause the browser to crash.  In IE8, it causes the current tab to crash over and over again until eventually I get a "Internet Explorer has stopped trying to restore this website" message.  In Firefox, the entire browser closes and gives a "Firefox had a problem and crashed" message.  I've also tested it on Opera and had similar results.  It happens when using both Windows XP and Windows 7.
It's a strange issue because Acrobat 8 and Reader 8 are both able to open pdf documents in the browser just fine.  I've been unchecking the "open documents in browser" option for Acrobat 9, but my company has some applications that require opening pdfs in the browser to function correctly.  We'd like to upgrade to 9, but can't until we get this issue sorted out.
Acrobat 9 is completely updated, but the issue still occurs.  I'm at a loss as to what could be causing it.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi broger_1,
Thanks for your reply.
In regards to your query:
Is the problem seen with both Reader and Acrobat?
No, this is only seen when Acrobat is install. It is working fine when only Reader is installed.
What is your definition of a dynamic link? Post example.
At the moment, I cannot find a online example for reference. I will try to describe by example.
Let's say if I goes to https://nonexistance_site.com/brochure_ folder/broc_1.pdf, and the "Display PDF in Browser" was already enabled.
The content of the broc_1.pdf contains a hyperlink that points to "../broc_2.html"
Our issue now is the we can only download the pdf file to a folder, say c:/pdfs/broc_1.pdf, so when we tried to access the dynamic link, it will tries to locate c:/pdfs/broc_2.html, which is non-existence. And direct access to https://nonexistance_site.com/brochure_ folder/broc_2.html would not work for some reason (possibily session restriction, or something else).
What are your security settings? (is Enhanced Security enabled?)
This setting is currently disabled in the Acrobat Pro 9 preference. Should this stays as disabled?
This only happens when attempting to "download & display" any pdf files from the net, displaying of local pdf that is already downloaded is fine.

  • Acrobat 9 crashes on OCR

I've been trying to convert a batch of large PDF files to PDF searchable files by using the OCR of Acrobat. In the middle of a batch, a large (1000+ page) document crashes acrobat. I have narrowed it down to this image:
    http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/2418/badke2.png
    59,520 bytes
When I convert it to PDF (File->Create PDF->From Single File) and then use Acrobat to "Document->OCR Text Recognize->Recognize Text using OCR", Acrobat always crashes.
Is this true for anyone else that could try it?
It kills my batch processing and is making this large conversion quite painful. Is there a way around it?

Acrobat 9 Pro OCR always crashes when using ClearScan but not when using "Searchable Image" or "Searchable Image (Exact)." I scanned several journal pages at 300 dpi (color, grayscale, bitmap) in .tiff and .png as well as screen selecting text from a browser. The results were consistent across all variations.
The last time I used the Acrobat's OCR function was last Summer before upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion. Under Snow Leopard, Acrobat did not crash during OCR (it did crash, just not while processing text for OCR). I did not attempt Acrobat OCR under Lion 10.7 or 10.7.1.
    Repeatable test.
    1. Open wikipedia "Crash (Computing)" page
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crash_(computing)
    2. Enlarge text size, if desired.
I tried several text sizes from the default to much, much larger. Text size has no impact on the results.

A crash (or system crash) in computing is a condition where a computer or a program, either an application or part of the operating system, ceases to function properly, often exiting after encountering errors. Often the offending program may appear to freeze or hang until a crash reporting service documents details of the crash. If the program is a critical part of the operating system kernel, the entire computer may crash. This is different from a hang or freeze where the application or OS continues to run without obvious response to input.

  • Applet Crashes Browser with XP

I have an applet, which runs normally when I just have a single instance of the applet on a page. However on another page I have a number of instances of the applet running. The page will load the first time but when I reload it the browser crashes and closes. I then get a file on my desktop called hs_err_pid****.log which contains the text below. I am running XP and JRE 1.4.2_03. The page will load fine using Microsoft JVM and after reading http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=54&thread=347810 I tried this with 2000 and JRE 1.4.2_03. The page loads fine and does not crash. Does anyone know of any bugs related to XP, which could be causing this and any work arounds for them?
    Cheers

Did you ever get this figured out? If not, try catching ThreadDeath from one
of your threads and print the stack trace. I am trying to convince Sun that another bug that they closed as "user error" is actually a jvm bug.
You can actually make a simple test case- it is one page of java code that
crashes browser on first or second refresh when you have two instances on
    a page. See:
    http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=5054115
if you simply lauch a thread, sleep for a while and call ThreadGroup.stop() you can produce a failure which I think replicates the jvm failure mode. Please let me know what you find or found. Thanks.

  • Failure to Open PDFs from the web - 'Adobe Acrobat has crashed'

I can't download pdfs from the internet, for instance an exam paper.
Chrome tells me 'Adobe Acrobat has crashed'
I'm using Windows 7, any ideas what I can do to fix this?

    Hi PLAVERY798
    Temporary fix:
--Go to Chrome plugins page by typing this in your browser: chrome://plugins/
--Look for "Chrome PDF Viewer" and Enable it
Otherwise, Please Use any Other browser like , Firefox or Internet explorer !

  • Combining PDF Form causes fields to disappar, Acrobat to crash when trying to edit combined PDF

I have a 10 page PDF form that I can edit normally.  I combine it using the Combine Files wizard.  The resulting PDF has several fields disappear upon saving, and causes Acrobat to crash every time if I try to edit the form.  I can combine the original PDF form with no other document, and the error still occurs.  I have several similarly named fields, such as Name#1 and Name#2, and it seems that all those fields disappear after going through the Combine Files process.  I can open the resulting PDF, and fill in the remaining fields, but attempting to edit the form causes Acrobat to crash each and every time.
I have used this process before, with no problems, but it fails every time on this form.
This is the error in the Event Viewer: Faulting application Acrobat.exe, version 10.0.0.396, time stamp 0x4cc5ebc0, faulting module AcroForm.api, version 10.0.0.396, time stamp 0x4cc5f5cc, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0012d905
This is using Acrobat X Standard and Pro on XP Pro and Vista.
If I open the original PDF, and insert a new PDF as new pages, that works fine.
I updated Acrobat to the latest patch, problem remains.  I don't know how to resolve this.

Did a little more testing and this is what I found. If I use the "Insert from file" feature to combine a cover sheet plus 3 AcroForms (inserting each file one by one), eveyrthing appears to work.  However, if I use the "Combine via Acrobat" feature I run into the issue of fields disappearing once combined.
I shoudl also add that perhaps the issue had something to do with the fact that I initally produced the cover page pdf via Photoshop "save as PDF". Perhaps that contirbutted to the structure issue despite it being a PDF...maybe under the hood things are structured differently.  Who knows.
Just FYI for others: What appears to be working is using the "Insert from file" option vs "Combing via Acrobat". Also, if you are including a non-AcroForm PDF, be sure it a traditional vs. saving as a PDF from Photoshop.
Alot of this may be a fluke, but it seems to fix my issue - for now.

Please try the steps below and let me know if it worked for you
Delete all the files from following folders:
    [Home]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/SLStore
    [Home]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/SLCache
And, delete all files from following folder except cache.db

  • Hyperlinks not working in adobe acrobat 7.0 browser control type library 1.0

    Hi,
We have used the adobe acrobat 7.0 browser control type library 1.0  in our VB 6.0 project to show the pdf files.
We generate pdf files using oracle reports. We have generated some pdf files which contains hyperlink to UNC path.
If we open that pdf file using acrobat reader it works fine and we can access the file kept on the path specified at hyperlink,
problems arise when we open that file from front end ie. from VB 6.0 which uses the browser control, we are not able open the files through the links.
Could you please help us on this. Are we missing any properties or methods of the browser control? Or we need to use higher version of the control.
    Thank you.

Thanks for your reply. I'll check at Adobe forums as you suggested. If you're right that no Firefox plugin is available for my version of Adobe Acrobat, I'll have to give up using Firefox just after installing it! And I do like it!

  • When I compare 2 documents Acrobat 9 crashes

When I compare 2 documents the progress bar will come up and will not disappear.  Eventually the following error will appear
    Acrobat.exe - application error
The instruction at "0x0000195a" referenced memory at "0x0000195a".  The memory could not be "written".
The above error also comes up if I click on the Progress bar for Document Compare.
Acrobat then crashes.  We are running Acrobat Pro 9.5, and have this happening on multiple machines
    Thanks

Hi, I have had a similar problem in Acrobat 10.1.9.22 for *specific files*, and talking to the Adobe tech support, they were also able to reproduce the crash with Acrobat 11 with these files, so it sounds like this bug is definitively not fixed yet.
    The bug:
    - When comparing 2 documents (View | Compare documents...), after some progress, Acrobat crashes (on my Windows 7 machine, it says "the application stopped working", the exception reported for me is c0000005 which is according to Google a memory access violation code). This will happen only on some *specific* .pdf documents (though it will be systematic for these). I am able to compare other .pdf documents fine without any issue.
** Current workaround** (thanks to tech support about this): You basically 'clean up' these bad .pdf documents by converting them to postscript and then back to pdf:
    Instructions for Acrobat X:
    For each document, do:
    1) File | Save as | More options | PostScript
    2) Then (in Windows at least), right click on the .ps file and choose "Convert to Adobe PDF" to convert it back to .pdf.
Now the convert the two documents should work fine with these 'refreshed' documents (hopefully).

  • Adobe Acrobat Pro crash

I have an iMac OSX (version 10.9.2).  Adobe Acrobat Pro crashes every time I try to use the "find" function.  Anyone else have this issue?

I was having this issue too. After a bit of a search I found an official response from Adobe with a patch you can install until the next update.

I've just installed the patch and done a quick test, everything seems to be working fine now...

  • Strange problem with Adobe Acrobat X (crash without a trace)

    Hi,
I have a strange problem with Adobe Acrobat. It happens totally randomly, it leaves no signs in system logs.
What is happening: during my work Adobe Acrobat sudennly crashes. After a crash I cannot run it again - system seems to do something for a second, but then nothing happends. When i look into taks manager - there are no processes of Acrobat.exe. It just doesn't want to run. What I need to do is to reinstall whole Adobe Acrobat - which requires restart.
I've already tried to restart system after crash, it doesn't help - reinstall is required.
Sometimes everyting is fine for a 3 months, sometimes crash happens a week after the previous one. It also happens in very different situations (somtimes  while opening a file, sometimes when doing something simple, sometimes in more complex tasks).
Has anyone encountered a similar problem?
    Acrobat version: 10.1.1
System info: Windows 7 64 bit

    Hi Kelvin,
Please let me know what OS version you are using.
The error also shows OS requirements not met.

    Acrobat 10.1.1

  • Acrobat X plugin & browser hosting

    Hi,
We are currently in the process of adjusting one of our plugins for Acrobat X (using the Acrobat X SDK, of course).
The plugin is relevant only when Acrobat is hosted (opened through) in a browser (mainly IE & Safari), that is - A user clicks on a link in the browser which opens a (browser) modal windows with a frame displaying the PDF (fetched from the web server) via Acrobat plugin for IE (or Safari). The plugin is a complemetry product to a web application, so it is not relevant when working with Acrobat as stand-alone.
With Acrobat 8.0 & 9.0 (which the plugin is built for) we can see the buttons the plugin adds to one of the upper toolbars, but with Acrobat X we cannot.
After reading this post we understood that the upper toolbars in Acrobat X are non-changable and GUI menu objects are placed in the "Tools panel" (the "Tools" button, upper-rigth, opens a panel to the right of the application's window and the plugins installed should be listed there).
The problem starts when Acrobat is in "Browser mode" - In this case the "Tools" button to open the panel does not exist. In fact, No upper toolbar exists (or... we did not find a way to make them show, no programmatic and no manual way).
Did anyone face a similar problem?
Is there a way to make the "Tools panel" show when Acrobat X is opened via browser?
    Thanks
    Omri

There is no need to answer like that. Believe me... I can be rude as well... But, we are all here for similar reasons - which is helping each other with a product that you represent. So, I'll ignore the tone of your last answer and appreciate you avoiding this tone as well (trust me - it will not get you far, in any aspect in life). I also believe that your supiriers do not appriciate you replying this way.
And BTW - I did download the Acrobat X SDK documentation, read it all and researched the web about my issue (I think you can understand it from the questions I've been asking) - Haven't seen such a poor documented product\SDK in a long time... So the problem (I assume) is not me, but your temper!
Oh... And the last link you sent me has nothing to do with my issue - no mention of Acrobat being hosted in a browser.
I asked if Acrobat X, when hosted in a browser, can display toolbars - And you answered that "... Yes.  If the user exits out of reading mode...".
Then I asked if it's possible to exit the default "reading mode" (minimal GUI) programmatically - And you answered "No".
A simple logical conclusion - In browser mode (embedded PDF file in browser), if a plugin has GUI elements (i.e. buttons) - it is not usable if a user can't see it (and he\she won't be able to invoked it's functionality).
Now, lets return to Acrobat X:
I did some testing with embedded Acrobat frames (in IE) and came to the following simple conclusion - Acrobat 10.0.0 is very buggy when hosted (embedded) in browser. Sometimes the "Tools" button shows, sometimes not.
After upgrading to 10.1.0 it consistent: The <embed...> tag is working perfectly and the upper toolbar is visible, but the "Tools" button (near "Comments" & "Share") is not there. But! When opening an embedded PDF file which has an AcroForm in it - The "Tools" button is shown and I can see our plugin.
So I'm still confused about it but I feel I'm getting there....
This is my HTML (without the <embed...> tag, which works):
    <html>
    <frameset rows="33%,*,*">
         <frame src="XForm.pdf" /><!-- Show PDF with AcroForm document-->
        <frame src="Doc1.pdf" /> <!-- Static PDF doc-->
    </frameset>
    </html>
This page contains two frames, each with an embedded PDF.
If the static PDF is the only one shown (comment the XForm.pdf frame) - It is shown in "Reading mode", with no toolbars or panels visible.
If both are shown - Then both Acrobat frames will have the toolbars and the "Tools" button.
I have screenshots (how do I upload them to the forum? - I still don;t know... Maybe you can refer me to the Documentation of using this forum ;-)).
Can someone shed some light here? Is this behavior by design?
    Thanks,
    Omri

  • Acrobat Reader crashing alot

    Hello,
My Acrobat Reader crashes frequently. I've uninstalled it, confirmed my system exceeds the system requirements, and installed it again. When it crashes, I receive an error message about something called Data Execution Prevention (DEP). Does anyone know if Adobe has a DEP-compatible version of Acrobat Reader X? Or how I can ask Adobe directly? Has anyone experienced similar issues? Do you have any other light to shine?
Thank you; I am just finding my way around here, so please forgive me if these questions are really basic and/or ought to be unnecessary.
    Thank you. ~ Anne Marie

    I appreciate the response.
Operating system: Windows Vista Home Premium (copyright 2007, Service Pack 2)
When it crashes, the message is "Adobe Reader has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
The next one is: Adobe Reader was closed.
Then, a longer message comes up near the program icon at the bottom strip across my window, about the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) -- it is one of those that is only there fleetingly, and I cannot copy it down in time before it disappears. However  it contains a link to an FAQ about Data Execution Prevention (DEP).
I gather that Windows feels obligated to close the program for one of two reasons: either security has been breeched (I ruled that out) OR there's an issue with how/what part of my system's memory is being accessed.
    Thank you!

  • Acrobat Standard 10-browser messages?

Acrobat Standard X no longer creates full PDFs from web pages that use Disqus as a commenting system. This seems to have happened after the most recent Disqus upgrade. Before the upgrade, I was able to use create PDF from web page to print the full article with all comments. After the upgrade, I get the article and maybe 1-2 comments, and below them it says "Sorry, the browser you are using is not currently supported. To use the comments, Disqus recommends the following browsers: Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer 9,  Safari." This occurs on all browsers, including Firefox 18, IE 9.

When you use Create PDF > From Web Page in Acrobat, the browser on your system (IE, Firefox, Chrome, whatever) isn't relevant. In this case ACROBAT is the browser - the program which reads stuff from the web. I'd recommend mentioning this to the makers of Disqus.
