Acrobat X Pro - subforms best practice?

I'm finding lots of advice for subforms for LiveCycle users, but wondering the best way to handle conditional subforms to present to the user as they fill out my form.
I'm new to X Pro and wondering if there is a terminology or utility I don't know yet that handles this issue. Happy to write some JS if necessary, but don't want to reinvent the wheel. Is it better to use links to new forms, perhaps?
Any suggestions appreciated
Jo

ummm how can I be clearer?
I need to use X Pro and I need to present my user with additional fields conditionally. I am not attached to it being a "subform", I am asking how others have solved this issue using X Pro.
Thanks

  • Update Hierarchy Acrobat 9.x/Update Best Practices?

Because of the many problems with Acrobat that seem to be caused by updates, I find it is common that I have to reinstall Acrobat (we are using 9) on someones machine.
Our installer disc/files are Acrobat 9, missing of course all the updates.  I typically run the updates seperately as I have them already downloaded...but I have been going in each step (9.12, 9.13, 9.14, etc.) which takes forever.  By my count, I have 14 updates that need installed one by one after I install Acrobat.  This is very time consuming.
Is there any idea or list of what updates I can skip b/c their fixes are included in the next release?  Or, better yet is there a way that I can download a full installer of 9.4.4 or w/e is current that works with my 9.x activation keys?
Wondering what other system admins do with the growing updates for this application.

how would one create an installer as you mentioned?  I created a batch file to install each update silently one at a time, but it is still a pain b/c if you don't disable UAC, you sit there and press continue every time...not ideal for widespread use.

  • Best Practice - IPv6 Turn Off? Windows 2008 (and R2) Servers

    Hi,
I work for a large organization.  We have close to 10,000 servers globally.  A question has come up if we should disable IPv6 on our Windows 2008 servers.  Our network is not yet capable of using IPv6.
It seems like you have to go out of your way to disable IPv6; therefore, I would assume that it is best to leave IPv6 turned on.
Does anyone have any thoughts about this.  It would be most helpful to have links to pros/cons - best practice.
    Thank you.

No, do not disable IPv6. There is no reason to do so unless you have a very specific application issue which is highly unlikely (although there are a few documented ones out there).

Whoever marked this as an "answer" obviously doesn't remember that bad-old-days of "Everything's on by default! It just works!!" and the billions of dollars in lost productivity that ensued from the hundreds (thousands?) of exploits that followed this
painfully short-sighted decision. You'd think Microsoft would have learned their lesson from the "IIS is on by default!" debacle, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Best practices for system administration say "turn off the services and protocols you don't use." As such,
IPv6 should ALWAYS be disabled on servers and business workstations if you're not currently using it, just like any other protocol or service you haven't implemented or aren't using. Not using FTP? Don't install or enable
an FTP server. Not using IPv6? Why would you have IPv6 enabled? Just because IPv6 is the newest, shiniest thing on the block doesn't mean you have to use, and it definitely shouldn't require you to start hacking about in the registry to turn it off.
The only exception to this rule would be laptops or mobile devices where the user might (conceivably) take them into an IPv6 environment. Even then, though, you have to balance the "convenience" of not having to switch-on IPv6 against the risk that
your unconfigured IPv6 stack might be exploitable by nefarious patries. Even so, the fact that almost nobody has switched their internal networks to IPv6 means that turning it off on laptops is still probably a "good idea."
For example, my laptop wireless interface might make sense to leave IPv6 enabled--I don't have any idea when I'll walk into an environment that uses IPv6 and want to use my wireless. But in the office when I'm hard-connected? We don't use IPv6 so it needs
to be "off." Even if it's just a bit of code in the Windows firewall that can be used to say "just reject IPv6 traffic on x interface" is still a big improvement. An absolute home-run would be the addition of logic that allows Windows to dynamically disable
IPv6 when there aren't any NICs or WNICs that are allowed to use it.
Finally, none of this should be construed to mean I'm advising against implementing IPv6, because I'm not. However, like any major technology project you should plan carefully, making sure you understand ALL of the consequences (not just the marketing hype,)
and making sure you'll be able to administer the changed environment as well as your administer the current one. You definitely should not let a vendor (of all things) force the decision to use it upon you because it's "on by default."

  • Best Practice? Edit using Word - Acrobat X Pro to Distribute?

I create Real Estate contracts/paperwork and email them to clients.  The clients then view, print, sign, and fax them back to me.
I'm trying to figure out how to setup my system so that I can modify all my document packages in Word Format then distribute them via email in PDF Reader Compatible format (so that users can save and print but not modify) WITHOUT having to recreate the PDF forms or stamps i use each time I create the PDF.
    Considerations:
I use the "Sign Here" and other stamps on the documents that are only visible before printing so that they understand the paperwork better.
I need to include Word and not just go all-acrobat because the documents frequently change and I don't want to have to recreate the forms from scratch in Acrobat when they do.
I also need to keep word because I use "Mail Merge" from to populate much of the data from an excel spreadsheet for me.  The rest is user-input.
    Software I have:
    Acrobat X Pro.
    MS Word 2010 Ultimate
I'm not familiar with Acrobat enough to know which features are available to me to best carry out my job.  If anyone can point me in the right direction, to a tutorial perhaps, so that I might learn how to minimize my workload i'd really appreciate it!
    Thanks!
Edit: PS. I need the final result to be a SINGLE PDF that I can attach to email.

I've decided to try to simplify my question in hopes somebody can answer.
How do most Realtors Prepare their paperwork for their Clients?
Imagine this: a Real Estate Agent wants their client to fill-out a purchase contract and addendums.  They want their client's data to be auto-populated in the form before sending it.  The Realtor places stamps in the PDF so that their clients know where to initial or sign the document.
Some clients need a buyers addendum with the contract, some need a dual-agency agreement with the contract, etc.
Let's say there are three documents that could potentially be needed:
    Purchase Contract (Buyers and Sellers)
    Addendum (Buyers Only)
    Agreement (Sellers Only)
It's the "package" that changes most of the time and not the data in the documents themselves.  I would like to be able to create a "Package" to send to the client based upon whether they're considered a "buyer" or a "seller".
Once the package is created, I need to be able to type data in certain fields and have them auto-populate throughout all other matching fields within each document (Price, for instance).  The forms wizard doesn't match up these fields so if the price field is in there 5 times, i have to type it in 5 different times.  To only do it once I have to manually change the tooltip/name to have them all change at the same time.
Optimally, in each package I want to be able to import the client's information from Excel so that most of the person's information is auto-populated.  For example, their name & Address.
My reality is that there aren't only 3 documents, there are 15-25 per client that I mix and match depending in their needs. THE CATCH is that sometimes I have to include protected forms to the package.
If anyone can suggest the most efficient way to do this (or at least any way they do it), I'd really appreciate it.
    -Neil

  • Why does Acrobat 9 Pro asks for Acrobat 9 Pro or Reader for best results

I have linked a page in Acrobat 9 Pro to a video which has been converted to a PDF and is one of the pages in the portfolio. When I activate the link the cover sheet comes up
For the best experience, open this PDF portfolio in
Acrobat 9 or Adobe Reader 9, or later.
I can't then get to the video.
however if I load the page directly it plays normally.
    any suggestions

Acrobat Standard 9 is a PC program. This is the Mac forum. However, we'll still try to help :-)
Please reconfirm your OS? If on the Mac OS, what version of Acrobat? Check to see if you have Preview set to be the default viewer of pdfs.
If on the a PC, which OS? Which version of Acrobat Standard 9? Have you updated to the latest version of Acrobat Standard? Do you have any other pdf viewers on your computer?

    Best,
    James.

you cannot use your pc license to install on a mac.  you would need a separate license (and serial number) for that.
adobe allows platform swaps, but only with the latest (xi) version, Order product | Platform, language swap
your option to use acrobat on a mac are to upgrade to acrobat pro xi and change platforms, use a windows emulator (parallels/boot camp etc) on your mac or swap with a third party.

  • Mac Pro 10.7 Server DMZ best practice

The Mac Pro has 2 gigE, what is the best practice for lion server and DMZ?
Should I Ignor one and put the server in the DMZ and firewall from the LAN to the server (pain for file share), or use one port for the DMZ and one into the LAN.
I have been trying to use the two ports and LION SERVER seems to want to bind only to one address (10.1.1.1 DMZ or 192.168.1.1 LAN).
Does anyone have a best practice for this? I a using a Cisco ASA 5500 for the firewall.
    Thank you

If you put your server in a DMZ all trafffic will be sent to it unfiltered, in which case the server firewall would be your only line of defense against attack.
For better security, set firewall rules in the Cisco that will pass trafffic to the ports you want open and deny traffic on all other ports.  You can also restrict access to specific ports by allowing or denying specific IP addresses or address blocks in the firewall settings.

  • Project Server / Project Pro = Cut and Paste official best practices to avoid corruption

It is pretty common knowledge among Project Server veterans that Cut and Paste between Project Pro files can cause corruption with the assignment table. This leads to Publish and Reporting (Project Publish)
failures. I just went through an upgrade from Project Server 2007 to 2013 and a LOT of files had to be rebuilt from scratch.
I ask my users to not Cut and Paste within or between project files. They do not always listen.
I have looked and cannot find official Microsoft text on the subject or at least some sort of official best practices doc. It would help me prevent some corruption if I had a doc with a Microsoft logo that says “It is not recommended….”
Or “If you do this you will make your admin cry…”
If this doc is right in front of me and I just missed it I apologize in advance.
    Thanks

    John --
To the best of my knowledge, there is no such Best Practice document from Microsoft.  Based on my experience with Project Server from Project Central through Project Server 2013, following are some items that can cause corruption in your project:
Use of special characters in the name of the project.
Cutting/copying/pasting entire task rows within a single enterprise project or between multiple enterprise projects.
Opening an enterprise project on your laptop while connected to a wireless network, then closing the laptop lid, walking to another room in the building when you pass from one wireless access point to another, and then opening the laptop lid again.
I learned this from one of our former clients.
Beyond this, there are some other items that will not corrupt your project, but which will cause problems with saving or publishing a project.  These items include:
Using blank rows in the project.
Using special characters in task names.
Task names that start with a space character (this sometimes happens when copying and pasting from an Excel workbook).
In both Project Server 2010 and 2013, the recommended method for resolving a corrupted project is to use the Save for Sharing feature. Refer to my directions in the following thread on how to use the Save for Sharing feature:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/projectserver/en-US/ec2c5135-f997-40e1-8fe1-80466f86d373/task-default-changing?forum=projectprofessional2010general
Beyond what guidance I have provided, I am hoping other members of this community will add their thoughts as well.  Hope this helps.

  • How can I best analyze data that were collected in an Acrobat XI Pro form in a variety of ways?

I would like to analyze the data that I collect using an Acrobat XI Pro form using a variety of numerical and statistical methods.  I assume the first step would be to export the data to a program such as Microsoft Excel.  I am wondering if there are any free or inexpensive programs I can use to perform the analyses.  i have SPSS, but I am looking for something free or inexpensive that my colleagues can use.

Yes, you can export the data as a tab-delimited text file, which you can then process in Excel.
What you do after that point is not really related to the subject of this forum.

  • Graphics in FrameMaker 9 lost when converted in Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro

Since upgrading to FrameMaker 9, some graphics that appear fine in FrameMaker become black boxes in the PDFs created by Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro. By finding the original graphic and reimporting it, the problem is solved, but the original graphic is not always available. Is there any other workaround to this problem created by the software? Suggestions would be gratefully appreciated!

I use Save As PDF (book). When I print to PDF, I don't get the problem (but I don't get the bookmarks)
I think you find in many places on this forum that the best practices for making a PDF is to print to the Adobe PDF printer, either directly or indirectly (saving the ps file and distilling with Distiller). It is my understanding that there are problems with Save As PDF.
In any event, you should be able to get bookmarks by printing to Adobe PDF printer. In the Print dialog, select Generate Acrobat Data and click PDF Setup. In the PDF setup dialog > Bookmarks tab, select Generate PDF Bookmarks and select the formats to bookmark. It is the same dialog that displays when you do Save As PDF.
Because your graphics are COPIED into the Frame files, I know of no way to get them out again from the Frame file. That is why I always import graphics by reference, so that the original graphic is always available if needed for editing or reimportation.
If you absolutely need a graphic file AND the Frame to PDF workflow is working properly, you can always create the PDF for the page with the graphic (turning OFF all resampling and compression). Then open the file in Illustrator and delete all but the graphic; then save as PDF or eps. Or open the PDF in Acrobat Professional and export the image (if a bitmap) or delete all but the graphic and save as PDF.

  • Acrobat X Pro Embed Flash & Powerpoint 2010

The only reason I upgraded to Acrobat X Pro from standard was to be able to embed cine loops/video into Powerpoint slides that would play upon conversion to PDFs via PDFMaker.
I've made some small test ppts and converted them. Sometimes they convert, sometimes they don't.
Of the converted files, I embedded two videos converted from mp4 via the "Embed Flash" option under the Acrobat heading on the Powerpoint ribbon.
One plays as it should.  The other just displays an all black window.  Both files were MP4s.  Got no error messages.  Both MP4s look fine/play fine in Powerpoint.  So why won't one convert correctly - no error message so PDFMaker seems to think it converted fine.  Seems like it is very unreliable.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    j

    Hi,
Thank you for trying to help.  I have Powerpoint 2010 32 bit version.  I have made some progress, but spent an inordinate amount of time doing so.
I can't embed directly into Acrobat using the commands you provided in your first message. This is what I am trying:
Insert new page. While on that page go to tools>Content>Multimedia>Video...  I click video  Nothing actually happens.  Not sure how this is supposed to work or be helpful.  There is no prompt to select a file, no dialog box, nothing...the selection just has a check mark next to it and stares back at me.
But if I select, Insert Page from Another File, and then adjust, "files of type" to be the video files, I can load the video directly into the PDF.  Of course then I don't have them formatted in the same slide background, etc. as the rest of the presentation and, "IT AIN'T PRETTY!".  And the insert only lets me insert "before" or "after" current slide, not onto the current slide...
I found that the inserted MP4 files displayed in jerky fashion and appear to have fewer frames than the original. In Powerpoint they play fine and move smoothly.  Another problem was that the files "blinked" before playing. In other words, image 1 is displayed.  If I click on the image, it goes black for a second and then the image comes back and plays its loop.  After much trial and error and loss of hours of my life I will never get back, I found that iif I turned off hardware acceleration and let it play in "software," the files played fine with no blinking.  However, how will I know how viewers of my content have their computers set up? This is pretty sketchy implementation, or, more likely, I just don't know what I'm doing.
Also, I see no way to make the slide play continuously.  I get one loop per click.  I did edit the properties so that it would "Disable when:" "The page containing the content is closed." This doesn't seem to make any difference and it still stops after one loop even while the page is displayed.  Is there a way to make the files that are directly embedded into the PDF play continuously once triggered?  Actually, I guess I don't care about that so much as, overall, inserting the cine loops directly into the PDF is a bad solution as the slide doesn't have the Powerpoint theme and formatting and such.
Concerning the embed process in Powerpoint using the Adobe Acrobat X Pro add-in:  I converted the test video to MP4 and MOV from an original AVI using Prism Video File Converter and each displayed just fine in their native format in Powerpoint (and I could loop them continuously!)
However during the embed process in Powerpoint,  when I use the Acrobat "Embed Flash" tool, the video is inserted as an all black window on the slide...I can't see the content at all.  If I save the file as a PPTm, the images do appear  in the Powerpoint slideshow and play, albeit with the initial blank image problem/Flicker despite hardware acceleration still being turned off.  Again I can see no way to make an embedded image loop continuously as long as the slide is displayed.  I get one loop and have to trigger it again.  Also, once I play the show, the image then does appear on the slide in the, "normal" editing mode. Pretty weird that I have to play the show to get the image and controls to appear in edit mode...
    So, bottom line questions:
1  Can I do an "embed flash" and get the image to play continuously unless stopped by the user using the controls?
    2. Can I do an "embed flash" and avoid the business where the cine box goes blank before displaying the embedded video?
    3.  Can I do an "embed flash" that doesn't start off life in the PPT presentation as an empty black box that only displays the video after it has been put through a slide show experience?
BTW, I am a physician and I'm trying to embed cine loops of 3D medical images from my radiology practice into secure PDF files for distribution to interested health care professionals. Since the images reflect my practice, I want them and the entire presentation to be as professional as possible.  I have to tell you, this is pretty frustrating since I paid for the Acrobat X PRO out of pocket and it isn't a business expense/tax deductible, etc.  I would never have thought this process would be so convoluted in such a mature product.  Any additional help that you or others on the forum can provide would be much appreciated, and of course I do appreciate your efforts to date.
    Best regards,
    John

  • Best practices for setting up users on a small office network?

    Hello,
I am setting up a small office and am wondering what the best practices/steps are to setup/manage the admin, user logins and sharing privileges for the below setup:

Vermutlich gar nicht, soweit ich die Infos überschaue. Bestenfalls als DWG exportieren und dann in Acrobat importieren. Da ADesk aber das Format jedes Jahr erweitert/ ändert um allen anderen den Spass zu verderben, gibt's dafür keine Garantie. SAT könnte auch funzen. Ansonsten gibt's sicher irgendwo ein schnuckeliges Export-Plugin für sowas zu kaufen...
