Activity monitor inconsistancy - what is real virtual memory size???

When I look at my activity montior system memory screen I see real and virtual memory in MB (with the largest at about 500MB).  As in my previous post I see a VM size of >240GB.  When I go to the File menu and hit Save... and then look at the resulting processes.txt file I see that the virtual memory is now listed in GB.  The real memory is consistent with what I see on the activity monitor window.  See below.  What's up?  Which virtual memory is real and which is "virtual"?
Active Memory: 1.47 GB
Free Memory: 846.1 MB
Wired Memory: 770.8 MB
Used Memory: 3.17 GB
Inactive Memory: 972.1 MB
Total VM: 231.35 GB

Ignore that. The method it's calculated works as following:
1. You have the Finder and Safari open.
2. Both programs and no other ones use the content of a single block of data. This block takes up 2MB of RAM or swapfile space.
3. The block is counted as 4MB in the VM size entry because it's being used twice.
Expanding the scenario over many processes and blocks adds up to a VM size figure which is far larger than the actual amount in use or the combined total of RAM and swapfile space.

So when you go to  > About This Mac - How it should say how much ram there. Click on More Info - And click on Memory - What is in those fields?

  • I found something called TMCacheDelete in activity monitor. What is it?

I recently upgraded to Yosemite and have found something called TMCacheDelete in activity monitor. What is it and should I be concerned?

This is purely an educated guess ...
I suspect that is clearing out your Time Machine cache.  Time Machine is your backup program that runs without your thinking about it, and backs up things that have changed since the last backup was done.
Should you be concerned?  No.  But by all means you should make sure you are in fact running Time Machine and keeping good backups.

  • MBP with 10.6.8: CPU usage high, no responsible processes shown in Activity Monitor. What causes this?

After using my computer for some time, CPU usage climbs to about 90% (ca. 65% user / 26% system) and fans run at high speed, but there is no processes that seem to use CPU (other than Activity Monitor itself ~1%).
This has happened a few times recently. It happens when I've used my computer for some time, hours or a couple of days (I usually put my computer to sleep when not using it but rarely shut it down). I've tried to quit all running apps incl. Growl, Dropbox, and anything that could be responsible to this but with no results. Putting computer to sleep for a long time doesn't help, cpu usage will climb instantly after wake up. Restarting system is the only thing that helps.
Most of the time I use my laptop with external monitor, lid closed and connected to power supply. When experiencing this, opening the lid causes fans to slow down, but CPU usage remains high and battery drains quick.
Any ideas what might cause this?
My MBP is 15" model with Core 2 Duo 2,66 GHz (MacBookPro 5,3), OS X version is 10.6.8, all available updates are installed.

    Perform a SMU reset.

Remove the anti-virus, it's running a root level process all the time that's taking your CPU and it's not necessary as there are no Mac viruses, Apple has the trojan angle covered already.
Always on anti-virus on a Mac is always a source of problems, also is MacKeeper, uninstall that here if you have it.
    http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malware/
If you need to clean the Windows filth off PC files, then use the free, run as you need, ClamXav.
    http://www.clamxav.com/
It seems your machine is used in a corporate enviroment, thus likely a rule that anti-virus must be used, you can avoid high CPU usuage by using the ClamXav instead.

  • "LSGuide" in activity monitor. What is it?

My very new Macbook pro's battery life suddenly shortened dramatically. When I look in activity monitor, I see process name LsGuide with very large %CPU usage (70.0-99.0). RIght now it's appearing once on the list, but last night there were as many as eight different LsGuide processes, each with huge usage. Is this what's killing my battery and, if so, how do I fix it?

It looks to be (via Google) Lightspeed Guide (filtered web access). You may want to have a look here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x83X-oaOQ6s
See if that's your issue. There are supposedly steps on how to remove it in the video. Also click on the "show more" button which displays:
    Select Finder
    Press Go
    Scroll to Go to Folder
    Type: /usr/local/bin
    Delete: LsGuide.kext
    Restart Computer
    Enjoy unfiltered web access

  • MxBtDeamon in Activity Monitor? What is it? Why is it there?

    Hello,
I've just been looking through my Activity Monitor to see what CPU is being used and for what. I found this "MxBtDeamon" process being ran under "Root". Does anyone know what it is, from other forums it looks like it is from a Maxtor One Touch device, but I have not had one in my system from since 2008. I had a look in Macintosh HD>Library>StartUpItems and it is also in there, and it says it was last modified in 2008. Does anyone know if I can remove it from the StartUpItems. Also d you know what it is?
    Thanks in Advance.
    Adam.

If you are concerned, put it in the Trash where the system can't reach it, then reboot.
If you have no problems after the reboot, empty the Trash.
If you have problems, put it back.

  • Mem usage vs Virtual Memory Size

    Hi Gents!
I have java server application and it has strange behaviour in memory management after one day of uptime. Windows Task Manages shows me Mem Usage=136m, Peak Mem Usage=342m, VM Size=557m. And Java Visual VM shows Heap Size=160m, PermGen=32m.
Do anyone have ideas how to deallocate Virtual Memory to decrease it size?
    JVM parameters:
    -Xms32m
    -Xmx192m
    -Xss128k
    -Xincgc
    -agentlib:hprof=cpu=samples
    -XX:+AggressiveOpts
    -XX:+DisableExplicitGC
    -XX:ParallelGCThreads=4
    -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC
    -XX:+UseParNewGC
    -XX:SurvivorRatio=16
    -XX:TargetSurvivorRatio=90
    -XX:MaxTenuringThreshold=31
    -XX:MinHeapFreeRatio=20
    -XX:MaxHeapFreeRatio=25
    -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true
    -Dsun.rmi.dgc.client.gcInterval=990000
    -Dsun.rmi.dgc.server.gcInterval=990000
    -javaagent:./lib/sizeofag.jar

Is it a multi-threaded application? How many user threads?

  • Virtual memory 4+ GB

I am a really elementary user, but after reading some posts, I opened the activity monitor for the first time. I'm on an ibook G4, 30 GB hard drive with only 1.3 GB available. The activity monitor shows over 4.6GB virtual memory, only 17 MB free, and the "page in/out" are both in 6 figures. What does this mean? I've got 768 MB RAM, with 238 unused (only Safari running). I don't understand alot of this, but isn't that a lot of virtual memory? Can I somehow decrease this?
    Thanks in advance.

Hello! No that's not anything to worry about I'm currently showing VM of 5.79 gigs. What I would worry about is your lack of FREE disk space. Youu should keep about 5-6 gigs FREE at the minimum. You're gonna run into real problems soon unless you can FREE up some space. Tom

  • How many virtual memory do you have on 10.6.1

    Hi everybody,
a few time ago, i was on 10.5.7 on a Macbook unibody 2Ghz 2Go RAM, so, there, my MV (virtual memory) Was about 7,45Go with lot of apps running in background...
now, on Snow Leopard my VM is about 130Go without anything running?
is it normal? my other Mac (last Macbook pro 13") has the same VM than my MacBook 2Ghz...
so what is your VM? is it normal??? link with the 64bit?
130 is also the same than my hardisk? 160Go
so many questions tha make me esitate to downgrade on 10.5.8...
    tks answering

My Mac Pro also reports about 130GB for VM size (in Activity Monitor).
In spite of, or perhaps more clearly than what the Activity Monitor helps says - that is - "Virtual memory, or VM, is hard disk space that can be used as memory".
It is the potential size that might be used on disk.
I look at my actual swap file (located in /private/var/vm) and it is only 64 MB.
Further in my case according to Activity Monitor none of that space is being used as reported in "Swap Used"
I believe the big increase you see is due the move of most system components to 64 bit and their potential to use more virtual memory.
I suspect you will find similar figures for the swap file and a modest usage of it.
    I wouldn't worry.

  • Virtual memory qqquestion

    Hi
Does anyone know what's happening with Virtual Memory in Logic 9.1.3 in 32-bit mode?
Looking at Activity Monitor on a freshly-booted empty template, Logic is showing 215Mb real mem, and 210Mb Virtual mem.
However, if you double-click the Logic process and look at the Memory tab, it says Virtual Memory Size 2.1GB
Now, I know 2.1 to be the true figure, because as soon as this reaches 3.9+ Logic runs out of memory. (and the number increases correctly as I load samples)
Why on earth is Logic booting with 2.1GB of memory already used? To compound the limits with 32-bit, this now means I can only load 2GB of plugs/samples instead of the expected approx. 3.5GB
Unfortunately I'm working on a couple of old projects that won't run in 64-bit because of unstable plugs in the bridge.
If there's no explanation, can anyone (running 32-bit) confirm that their Logic is using 2GB before you've loaded anything?
    Thanks
    Steve

You're ignoring that memory can be dynamically re-allocated.
Logic might be spending 800 MB on FlexTime routines that it's no longer using actively, as all FlexTime calculations and edits have already been made. When you load an instance of Space Designer, the FlexTime routines still in memory can be replaced by Space Designer processes.
You only run into trouble when everything you're ACTIVELY using within an application hits 4GB.
Obviously, this can happen rather easily these days, what with multi-gigabyte sample instruments and assorted plug-ins, and the general tendency to insert effects directly into the channel strip, rather than using bus sends.

  • Activity monitor shows Billions of messages - activitymonitord & kernel_task?

I'm seeing Billions of messages on activitymonitord and kernel_task after 1 day of uptime.  Is this something to be worried about?  Is it related to the >240GB virtual memory size?  Yes, I leave activity monitor running to show me the memory use in the dock icon.  That's probably why it's messages are so high.  Is it a good practice to leave activity monitor running all the time - i.e. for the disk drive?

Messages are simply communications sent between tasks (programs), and are tracked. Activity monitor has to continuously poll tasks and the kernel to determine what their states are and issue the statistics you see, so it will have one of the higher rates of message throughput than almost any other program.
Message counts are cumulative, and start when a specific program is run, so if you have kept Activity Monitor on continually for over a day then it can very easily get up to billions of messages sent. In keeping mine on for the ~10 minute duration of typing this reply it has jumped to 31 million messages.
The virtual memory size is also well within the expected range. My current VM size for a system with 16GB RAM is 497GB.
Overall, it looks like everything's running as expected.

  • After upgrading to Lion, the Finder will increase the virtual memory while using external HD

after upgrading to Lion, the Finder will increase the "virtual memory size" while using external HD. I check it using Activity Monitor and found that "Finder" wll increase the "Virtual Memory Size" and "Private Memory Size". and then after a while. the system told me my HD is full and hanging there.
My External HD is 1TB. and I have installed new version Paragon NTFS for Mac V.9.01. I am not sure it is related or not.
but I attached my external HD. the "Finder" will start to increase the "Virtual Memory Size".
please help out this case and solve this issue.
    thank you !!!

The one has nothing to do with the other. Virtual memory size and Private memory size are used by developers to analyze their software. it has nothing to do with anything related to the user.

  • Tips on managing Activity Monitor?

I'm getting a new MacBook Pro next week. Until then, I'm running my current machine off an external hard drive. However, it's very hard keeping it going. It sometimes works fine for a while, but it always freezes eventually, apparently a victim of insufficient memory.
I just wondered if anyone has any tips on key processes I can close in Activity Monitor to keep it going? I've freed up some memory by using Safari and TextWrangler instead of Chrome and Dreamweaver. In fact, the only programs I have open at the moment are Safari, TextWrangler, MAMP PRO, Activity Monitor and Finder.
Surprisingly, Finder appears to be another major memory hog; it freezes all the time (though not at the moment).
    Thanks.
