AD-HOC Documentation

Hi,
I need some documentation material which provides to work on Ad-Hoc Queries in WAD. I am very new to BW as well I have little bit idea about WAD.

  • Is it too much to ask MS for a simple ad-hoc query tool for end users?

    Hello
This is a general MS BI topic and not specific to Power Query, but I couldn't find a more suitable general forum for it.
This posting is the result of the frustration I have with MS BI stack, whereby a simple ad-hoc drag and drop query tool to get the data in a table format (preferably from a relational
data source) is missing, something that other big vendors have, such as SAP Business Objects Universe and the associated tools. The deprecated SSRS Report model and SMDL was the closest MS ever got to this functionality (although that had some limitations
too), which unfortunately is dead now in favour of all sort of "Power" tools that basically can’t deliver the same functionality.
The requirement is pretty simple: provide users with a tool that they can drag and drop fields from different entities in a data model without having to worry about entity relationships and
apply necessary filters and get the data out in Excel or CSV, no fancy (or even simple) aggregation or formatting is required, and users should only see the rows they are authorized to see, i.e. row level security (RLS) of data.
Let’s see what we have at our disposal from MS BI:
From the modeling perspective, we have relational models in the database that support RLS with views, but obviously cannot maintain PK-FK relationships in the database model between views. Other
models are .Net Entity Data model Framework model exposed as OData, and SSAS tabular, SSAS PowerPivot, SSAS multidimensional, which you can find a good comparison of their features here:
    http://www.sqlchick.com/entries/2012/3/4/decisions-powerpivot-ssas-tabular -or-ssas-multidimensional-m.html
From the tools perspective we have:
Power Query on top of a relational database (SQL Server): Can connect to relational databases easily, generated queries are optimal, detects relationships with entities, but only when entities
are tables and have PK-FK relationships enforced in the database. So can’t detect relationships with views and hence can’t enforce RLS, so this is not an option unless users keep joining entities, which is not a desirable option either.
Power Query on top of an OData: Works well except that queries generated for multiple entity expansion are terrible (look here for more details:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/7a8b8e52-d3a9-42af-bc52-9d5459c00529/odata-multilevel-expand-query-issue?forum=powerquery). In addition all filtering and projections are done at client side, so even if you want 1 row out of 1 million, all
rows are brought over to Excel before filtered. Overall this results in unacceptable performance even for small sized data.
Power Query on top of a tabular model: Doesn’t support that type of data source yet (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ebcccb5e-7058-4046-917d-3d7fcf60cbdc/tabular-model-as-data-source-for-power-query?forum=powerquery).
Even if it did, tabular models don’t support Many-to-Many relationships out of the box and not sure if there are plans to support tabular models in Direct Query mode in Power Query to take care of RLS.
Excel on top of tabular models or multidimensional models: The tabular model should not be in Direct Query mode and you only get to use PivotTable to query the model. PivotTables are not famous
for generating optimal MDX queries, so performance is not going to be acceptable if you are dealing with large dimensions, especially large junk and degenerate dimensions. You can use drilltrough to get details of a measure, but you have to specify the columns
for a drilltrough action upfront, no flexibility for users to select what they want to see.
PowerPivot on top of relational databases: The query designer cannot detect relationships between views, so users have to perform manual joins, not an option.
PowerPivot on top of a multidimensional or tabular model: The query designer doesn’t generate optimal MDX queries by drag and drop. Especially there doesn’t seem to be a way to add related
attributes of a dimension attribute to the query without cross joins which results in poor performance on large dimensions. Other issues found here
http://sqlblog.com/blogs/marco_russo/archive/2010/08/24/using-ssas-2005-2008-as-powerpivot-data-source-query-designer.aspx. In addition the result set has ugly column names and issues with data types, such as interpreting numeric data types as Text, and
there’s no straight forward way of getting the data from PowerPivot directly to Excel. The user either has to do a copy/paste (which doesn’t work on large datasets) or create a pivot table, bring the measure, and drillthrough the measure to get the details
    in table format.
PowerPivot with OData: Treats every entity as a separate table to import, not suitable for our use case.
Report Builder and SSRS on top of relational, multidimensional or tabular model: Given the query designer is the same as PowerPivot, it has similar issues. In addition, there are 4 more steps
from designing a query to generating an Excel or CSV output, not an option.
PowerView: Works against tabular and multidimensional models, but there’s no way of exporting data to Excel sheet. Besides the add-in is not available for Excel 2010.
Good old MS-Access: Link to tables and views through ODBC, create relationships between entities and give each user a copy of that Access database to create their queries, and deal with the
nightmares of updates to the model and distribution of new models to the users! Did I mention Access as an option?
So there you go, 10 options, none of which can deal with a seemingly simple use case sufficiently. At the moment, the best among them appears to be option 6 against a heavily optimized OLAP
cube, and perhaps #3 when/if Power Query support for tabular models in direct query mode arrives. Perhaps I am missing something very obvious, and would like someone to enlighten me here.
    Thanks
    MR

Hi, as far as I can infer, that term means it's not loading any resources until needed, opposite of this...
    -bind_at_load
Sets a bit in the mach header of the resulting binary which tells dyld to bind all symbols                when the binary is loaded, rather than lazily.
    https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/ man1/ld.1.html
    Load resources lazily.
You should never load a resource file until it is actually needed. Prefetching resource files may seem like a way to save time, but this practice actually slows down your app right away. In addition, if you end up not using the resource, loading it wastes memory for no good purpose.
    http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#documentation/iphone/conceptual/iphoneos programmingguide/PerformanceTuning/PerformanceTuning.html
And, higher OS versionsare even worse with Bonjour/mDNSResponder, but might see this...

  • Questions in Ad Hoc Query & How to Configure the EEO standard reports

    Hi all,
I have a  question in Ad hoc query report in HR.
<b>How to:</b> Get a list of the total number of employees included in a particular report at the end of the report. Ex: If i create and run a report for salaried employees, sorted out by company codes, how can i get a sub-total and total no. of employees listed in the report.
I tried Ranked format, but when you print the report it doesn't retain the report name on the top.
-->I have a question regarding the Standard reports for EEO and AAP
    <b> How do I</b>
    1. Start configuring these report
    2. What are the things i should have before configuring it in IMG
If anyone can provide me with some documentation regarding the EEO and AAP report configuration that would be great.
    Thanks in advance.....
    Harish

This can be done using the security for the Infoprovider,  provide the users access to create queries only for that Infoprovider.

  • Disable Ad-hoc networking

Due to recent security concerns, my company's networking team has begun looking into how one might disable ad-hoc networking on both Windows and Mac computers. Windows computers appears to be fairly easy - it's a check box in the Windows wireless management software. I have disabled internet sharing on the Macs through group policy, but have not found an easy way to disable ad-hoc networking. Any recommendations?
    Thanks in advance!
    Bryan

I appreciate your response. Let me clarify. I am a personal user and created the ad-hoc network sometime back. I've tried disabling and or deleting it but have had no success. I can't find any documentation on the Apple support site and am looking for any thought as to how I might go about it.
    Thanks

  • Help in Ad-hoc query and Hr form editor

any body have material links of Ad-hoc query(it means how the reports are generated with Ad-hoc query) and Hr form editor(with examples) plz forward it to me???????????

    Hi,
HR Ad Hoc Query is the special version of InfoSet Query with the HR object selection.
You can find the system documentation here:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp2005vp/helpdata/en/f9/cc9138e4a0341fe10000009b38f8cf/frameset.htm
However I doubt the use of documentation of the query generator. So what is your concrete question?
Or in any R/3 via application help of transaction SQ01.
Also HR580 is a good course.

  • Write code in ad hoc query

    hello All,
I have a reqmnt, My client has an existing ad hoc query and I need to add two fields to it, both of the fields are not direct and needs some coding, cud anyone please explain how can i go bout it?
    thanks,
    RS

Its quite straight forward, so just have a play around, but the steps are something like:
    1.     SQ01/environment/info sets/query areas/standard
    2.     Choose the info set you wish to change
    3.     Choose the filed group you wish to add a field to
    4.     Right click the infoset you want to add a field to
    5.     Add the new field to the field group for that infoset
    6.     Then use the extras button to add code to that field
I tend to use the initialization, and record processing event blocks for adding my code.  USe the eblow link for the SAP documentation.

And here is some sample code i've used for one particaulr field, just to give you an idea of how easy it is.
    rp_provide_from_last p0000 space pn-begda pn-endda.
    * Get last Ity2001 record
    IF p0000-massn = '16'.
SELECT SINGLE pernr max( endda )
             FROM pa2001
             INTO (p2001-pernr, p2001-endda)
                  WHERE pernr = pernr-pernr
                  GROUP BY pernr.
    ELSE.
      rp_provide_from_last p2001 space pn-begda pn-endda.
    ENDIF.
    SELECT SINGLE UMSKD
           INTO WA_UMSKD
           FROM Y0PT_AMMSUBS
                WHERE PERNR = p2001-pernr

  • How to set a sheet as Ad Hoc via VBA ...

We keep trying to convert our existing workbooks for Smart View.
As you can imagine this is a nightmare process but we keep trying ...
There is some progress and we learnt a lot on the way but we still face some major issues - we find SV with VBA to be an unpredictible combo.
    Anyway ...
In simple words I use a sequence of VBA SV API calls to create private connection (HypCreateConnection), to connect the sheet (HypConnect) and to retrieve data (HypRetrieveRange) - along the way I set up SV options and hide the Panel and the POV.
All "by the book" - I wish such "a book" ever existed ... I mean the documentation is far from "in depth" ...
The process works in c. 80% of cases (i.e. grids) but it fails on some (so far I found no correlation with anything else)
I have tried and tried all sorts of tricks to debug it.
It works with ALL grids in 1 in 20 tests but you can never predict when and why.
So it can work but something somewhere causes the process to fail on some grids in most of the tests.
    I noticed one detail ...
While the sheet gets connected and retrieved  with our process the Sheet Info still shows the sheet status as Empty ...
When working from a blank worksheet and with the Panel open (i.e. NOT via VBA) one of the steps is to click on Ad Hoc Analysis button.
It is unclear to me what exactly this one step does and it does not seem to be connecting or refreshing the grid.
It seems it defines the grid to be an Ad Hoc one.
Can the same be achieved programatically via VBA ?
So far I have NOT found any equivalent API call.
In desperation I am going to replace all HypRetrieveRange calls with HypMenuVRefresh call.
Would it define the sheets as Adf Hoc ?
    I will find out ...
Will it help with some odd grids ?
    Fingers crossed it will.
    Regards

    Hi Deiter,
You can achieve this with below steps.. I am giving below steps considering you want
to keep the condition type set as Obligatory always in your Pric Procedure
-> Write a custome routine for "Requirement Routine" with the logic : When item category
is ZAN, remove "Obligatory" check from KOMT1-KOBLI.
-> Assign this routine to condition type ZZ00
you are ready to go now.
    Why i am suggesting this...
-> Industry best practise, to write minumum codes in user exits (in this case it will be sales user exit),
as it increases system response time
-> If we change someting in user exit, imagine, everytime you are creating a Sales Order, which does
not call for this pricing procedure (with cond typ: ZZ00 ), still this part of user exit code written
to check if item cat is ZAN or not will be called, so why to make system work more when
        actually not required
    Hope this helps !
    Regards

  • Ad Hoc distribution not working

I am trying Ad Hoc distribution for the first time. I generated the Ad Hoc mobile provision profile with the user's UDID. I built the app as Apple describes. I sent the provision file and the zipp'ed app to someone running Windows XP.
They dragged the provision file into iTunes and that seemed to install (when they did it a second time it said it was already installed). When they dragged the .app directory into iTunes, the cursor changed to a Plus sign as they dropped it there. However it was not then visible in the Applications part of the library. When dragging it into iTunes a second time, it **did not** indicate it was already installed.
Any idea what the problem could be? If somehow their UDID didn't match the one in the provision file (or the one in the app), would it give this behavior?

I had this problem when doing ad-hoc on Windows before. I created a compressed copy of the application using the compress feature in Finder. Unfortunately, when that ZIP file is extracted on Windows, you get both a .app folder and a .app file in the extracted directory. Not sure what's in the extra file (Finder resources, maybe?) but it is a little confusing.
I solved the problem by writing a script that uses the command-line zip command to create an .ipa file, which is properly-interpreted by Windows and Mac OS iTunes. I don't think the structure of the .ipa file is documented anywhere, but it's just a ZIP archive with a "Payload" folder containing your .app bundle. If you want to see what one looks like, just run "unzip" on an IPA from your iTunes library.
Oh, and I suggest that you personally try out your install instructions on a Windows machine before sending a build out to a tester, if you can. I use Parallels to do my Windows-based testing, but there are lots of other options.

  • Ad hoc distribution enabled (maybe?)

In the Program Portal Distribution Center the instructions on how to build for adhoc are live. I tried it and every time iTunes tries to sync my app to my new 3G phone, I get an error saying it failed because of an unknown error (0xE8000001). Dunno if I'm having certificate and/or code signing problems or if maybe it just doesn't work yet?
If someone else could try and chime in with their results, I'd appreciate it greatly.

i have been getting the same error too
    have tried
    3G phone with 5a345
    3G phone with 5a347
iPhone with 5a345 setup as development device in xcode
iPhone with 5a347 setup as normal device and a fresh restore
    all the same
other beta testing volunteers reporting same bug.
I predict it's a gap in the documentation on that ad hoc page.

  • SmartView Ad Hoc Query & Using an Input Tab

We have SmartView ad hoc query files that contain multiple sheets. We'd like to have an "input tab" that we use to set POV values for all the reports (i.e. currency & month). I tried putting an Excel formula wh/ referenced the cell on the input tab containing the period information, but this did not work. Is this possible in SmartView? For example, I'm trying to avoid making the same currency update on each report when we want to switch be/tw running all 10 sheets in Local and USD results.
    Thanks.
    Terri T.

    Terri -
I'm would say that I am not an expert, but you could try using substition variables or you could use cell references to accomplish this.
You can find plenty of documentation on substitution variables through Oracle docementation or google search.
For using cell references in a specific file only, I have a month end report where I utlize cell references off one cell on one sheet to set the Time dimension for all other sheets.
For example, cell A2 on sheet1 contains the formula =TODAY() - DAY(TODAY()), which gives me the prior period month end date, currently 3/31/2013. I can then reference this cell in each sheet to set my time dimension. For example, to get the current period member of March, my formula is =TEXT(A2,"mmmm") if on the current sheet or =TEXT(Sheet1!A2,"mmmm") if on another sheet. Likewise, you can set a YTD member (depending on what your time dimension looks like) by using a formula such as =TEXT(A2,"mmm")&+" YTD", which will return the member Mar YTD.
    Hope this helps.

  • Bex Web Ad-hoc Analysis Template - Displaying both Data and Graph Tabs

    Hello Everyone
I am asking this as I would not have belived this if I hadn't seen it for myself. I was showing somone a BW report using the standard Bex Ad-hoc analysis on the Web. They managed to display both the data analysis tab and the Graphical display tab on the same page, with the data at the top and the graph underneath. I could see that both of the tabs were highlighted at the top. It was great because as you manipulated the data in the navigation block, the graph changed at the same time.
I have looked in all my documentation and I have not found anything.
I have tried to replicate what this user did, but cannot. I have tried all the usual things like Shift control and alt, but it doesn't work.
Does anyone know how to do this, because the user loves it and I cannot explain to them how they must have done it!
Points will be awarded for the successful answer!!
    Many thanks to you all
    Gareth

    Thanks Andrew
I am glad you understand what I mean, as I thought I was seeing things when I saw it!
I feel I am so close to the answer, but when I do the drop down on the Graphical display tab for "display as" it only gives me the options
    Column Chart
    Line Chart
    Pie Chart
    Bar Chart
    Stacked Bar Chart
Do I need to do something else, or I am I in the wrong part of the report and I am running BW 3.5.
Thanks for your reply so far

  • CF9 cfscript documentation/examples?

I am in the process of updating the CFML mode in the editor I use for CF development and have spent some time going through the available CF9 documentation. In looking through the downloadable PDFs, I am trying to find either examples or reference material for some of the new stuff and have failed. For example, the "Developing Applications" document, on p. 105-108 lists a number of CFML tag/CFSCRIPT equivalents (some of which are indicated as being new) for which I can find no examples or references describing the syntax or what they look like:
    savecontent
    trace
    location
Can someone point me either to examples or (preferably) to reference material for these elements of CFSCRIPT?
In addition, in looking at exception-related topics in CFSCRIPT, I'm wondering about throw. How does "throw" in CFSCRIPT compare from CFML? p. 18 of the "Developing Applications" document has a single example of
    throw "message";
but I'm wondering what throw really looks like in terms of the other attributes (detail, errorCode, extendedInfo, message, object, type).
Is Adobe actively working on the CF9 documentation? These aren't the only areas I have found in trying to go through the docs to see what is new, changed, etc., where they seem a little fuzzy or incomplete, but maybe I'm just not looking in the right places.
    Thanks in advance.
    /ron

Thanks for the follow up, Adam. I'll look some more at the throw() stuff to see if I just missed it in the docs.
Given all of the changes to CFSCRIPT in CF9, I would have thought having decent docs would have been a priority for Adobe, particularly given the nature of the changes. I've always liked CFSCRIPT for logic, but have wanted a more complete coverage of the capabilities available via the CF tags to also be available in CFSCRIPT; as a result, I've really been looking forward to CF9 with that in mind.
I've got to say, however, that the expansions to CFSCRIPT feel very ad hoc: poor (as in incomplete, in error, and inconsistent in coverage and format) documentation and lack of consistency in how the expanded coverage is provided: some via component, some via function, and some via a couple of different formats of statement.
I'll keep digging in the docs, and I'm hoping to have a CF9 box fairly soon to start trying some of this against to verify syntax.

  • Ad hoc queries in BW 3.5

I am looking at building a web ad hoc query template that will enable end users to query against a certain cube.  Has anyone done this?  What are the risks of haveing end users create queries using ad hoc?  Can you lock the ad hoc object to only 1 cube?  Please help
    Thank you
    Aaron Blasi

The risks of end users creating queries are the same as of end users creating queries in the BEx. Depending on your InfoCube design people may create queries that don't deliver the expected results. To prevent this you should create some useful structures and save them to ease query creation.
You should also write a little documentation per InfoProv with rules like "Always select exactly 1 version, either for the whole query or per column", "Key figure Sales Price does not include discounts given" and things like that. Otherwise your users either get frustrated or you spend hours and hours fixing the users' queries.
If you mean with "lock the ad hoc object to only 1 cube" that the users shall be able to create queries on cube A but not on cube B the best is to settle this with authorizations. You can also put an InfoProvider into the web item so that one cube is defaulted for the query but if the user clicks on 'Create New Query' he can select the other InfoProvider (he is authorized to create queries) too.
Normally you wouldn't allow users to create BEx queries but not ad hoc queries on a given cube so this should be no problem.
    Best regards
       Dirk

  • Using Crystal Reports for Ad-Hoc reporting

Is Crystal Reports capable of ad-hoc reporting? If so what of the myriad of products is the minimum that I would need to get started?

There are a few ways to get close to what you need.  The easiest way is to use Crystal Reports for Eclipse which is the product that contains an embedded version of the Cystal Reports designer.  This would allow users to design and connect the reports to datasources in a similar manner to Crystal Reports.  It isn't a fully featured version of CR, more of a basic version.  It will allow you to add charts, and you can open an already created template; the connectivity is limited to JDBC, JavaBeans, POJO classes, XML and Web Services.
You can also use the Crystal Report Java SDK to create your own adhoc pages that will allow you to perform the functionality you designer.  The API will allow you to do nearly anything you can do within Crystal Reports.
The above downloads are can be obtained freely from the Crystal Reports for Eclipse portal on SDN.  To distribute web applications internally, you do not require any additional licenses.  To sell your application or to distribute it externally, you require a Developer Advantage license.  See this link for more information about that:
    http://www.sap.com/solutions/sapbusinessobjects/sme/reporting/eclipse/technicaldetails/index.epx
For more information about the SDK and Embedded Designer, have a look at the Crystal Reports for Eclipse 2.0 Developer Guide AND API reference documentation in the SDK Library, the Business Objects Portal, on http://www.sdn.sap.com .

  • Where are the supported annotations documented?

When configuring tasks it becomes very easy and intuitive because it uses the EMF model. So the context menu only offers what makes sense in that context.
But the same doesn't happen with the Annotations. I would expect that there is some wiki or similar where I can find all supported annotation for all tasks. However I followed all links from the wiki and I didn't find anything.
Does anyone know where I can find this information?
    Thanks in advance.

That has been decided by the team on a case by case basis. Maybe Ed remembers some general rules ;-)

The more general facility would probably "just" a pluggable model preprocessor mechanism. On the one hand that sounds
very powerful and interesting, on the other hand it sounds pretty scary if, for example, an arbitrary plugin can hook in
a preprocessor that sets disabled=true on all tasks, always. I'm not sure how we could control the ultimate force once
we've passed it to the public.
