Adapter/charge cycle question

Sorry for all the questions. This will be my last one.
I use my iPod with a FM transmitter a lot at home and in the car while having it connected to the adapter. Does using the adapter still count as a charge cycle?. Say, hypothetically, I use the iPod + adapter for 15 hours straight, is that still one cycle even if the adapter is keeping the battery fully charged.

As far as I have read, 'top-off' charges are not detrimental to the iPod and may extend the life more than depleting the battery. Always 'exercise' the iPod from time to time.

  • Older (removable) MBP batteries: adaptive charging, cycles?

Apple is touting how new built-in batteries have "adaptive charging" and go "up to 1000 cycles, which is 3x industry standard". I noticed they aren't saying "3x previous MacBook models", but are referring to some vague "industry standard" so I was wondering if anyone knows what's the expected number of charge cycles on a removable 15" unibody MBP battery? Is it 300, or do these also have "adaptive charging" that allows more cycles?
I remember Apple was releasing battery firmware updates for earlier MacBook Pros (2005-2007), so I was always under impression even older-generation batteries were "smart", as they too had a processor and firmware in them for "adaptive charging". What's the truth?
(Although I also have to say that my old, 2006 MacBook Pro is now on its 3rd battery. The previous ones degraded really quickly; over about one year; nothing too lasting or smart about them...)

Hi, Attila. All Apple notebook batteries have been "smart" to the extent of keeping track of their own charge levels, preventing overcharging, and counting charge cycles fractionally. Exactly what Apple means by "adaptive charging," I don't pretend to know.
Apple's stated expectation for battery longevity prior to the non-user-replaceable batteries was that a properly-maintained battery should retain 80% of its original full charge capacity after 300 charge-discharge cycles. In the real world, few batteries are maintained ideally or even "properly" throughout their working lives, and many don't live up to that expectation. Others exceed it. On average, the older batteries were typically usable for 300-500 charge cycles or 2-4 years, though the actual range of variation ws much broader than that. Both cycle count and chronological age take their toll on a lithium-based battery; a five-year-old battery will have a greatly diminished capacity even if it only has 100-200 cycles on it.
The highest cycle count I've heard of in any of the older removable batteries was a little over 1000 — but that same battery had reported a cycle count of zero about 24 hours earlier, so I don't believe either readout. Another poster here reported a cycle count of 900+ for a battery that was on its very last gasp. That may have been true, and if it was, it was certainly extraordinary. I don't remember ever hearing of any other battery surviving more than 650 cycles.
Apple, like other computer makers, has had trouble in the past few years with defective batches of batteries produced by their manufacturing partners, notably Sony. Many defective batteries have been replaced free of charge.

  • Charge Cycle Question with MBP 2011

Hi, I am currently using a 13" Early 2011 MBP.  I bought this laptop around July of 2011 and was recently looking at my charge cycles.  I've noticed that within this last year I have gone through 245 charge cycles, is this normal?  I feel like I have gone through alot more than I should have in a year.  I use my computer for gaming and school.  I was always told it was good to get your battery to 100% then let it die, not realizing this is just calibrating the battery.  Is it bad to calibrate it this often?  When I am gaming would it be better if I just left the charger in the whole time and disconnected it when I would need to take my laptop somewhere else?  Also, how many charge cycles is average to when people start having their batterys deplete quickly? Thanks ahead of time for answering, it is greatly appreciated

    Cycle Count
Apple says it is around 1000, but it will be always much lower.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1519
    Calibrating Battery
Apple says  a non removable battery need not be calibrated.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4230?viewlocale=en_US
When battery goes bad, there will  be an  X on the battery icon in the menu bar.
Then you can take MBP to the Apple store to get it replaced.

    Best.

  • Adaptive charging in "new" macbook air?

    Hi,
I've seen many peoples wondering about the new macbook air's battery.
    But didn't clear me up.
So I'm still wondering about the adaptive charging used in the macbook pro's.
Does the new macbook air have adaptive charging or not?
and if so, are they functioning as the macbook pro?
Because in one of those topics someone asked the same stuff, and the answer was: "type=yes, Size=no"
So the new macbook air series are will adaptive charging chip, but are they functioning with 1000 charging cycles?
I'd understand that the mba won't last for 7 hours or anything like that as the macbook pro, because its not a battery with the same quantity cells, cuz the mba uses a lil bit smaller battery.
Anyways, I just want to know if the new macbook air series are built-in with adaptive charging, and if they are functioning.
    Thanks

I cannot be absolutely sure - except that when the latest revision of the MBA was released - Apple never announced that feature in the battery - and - they really made a big deal of it last fall when they released them with the MBP.
So - I think they didn't mention it because that technology is NOT in the MBA.
If it was they would flaunt it to sell more MBA's.

  • Can someone explain this chart about Li-ion charge cycles to me

I consider myself a pretty smart guy, but i couldn't figure this out. I'm thinking that apple just provided this graph without any real explanation of what it means. I'm talking about the one on .. http://www.apple.com/batteries/ that has a caption starting with "Charge Cycle." They provide a general explanation of cycles below, but don't seem to address the same thing the illustration they provided does. What does the 40% 20% 30% 20% 50% 60% mean? Why is "1 Cycle" in the middle and what is the difference between cycle 0-1 and 1-2. basically that illustration makes no sense to me and i'd love for someone to explain it

That charge is telling you how the charger charges the battery. The voltage charge is the green line and the amperage is the orange line. Voltage goes up to its full extent in the first couple of hours. The amperage starts at full charge strength and goes down as the batery charges so it will not overheat the battery. The most important thing to know about charging a Li (Lithium-ion) battery is that it has two different charge times, quick and full. most Li batteries get about an 80% charge at the quick charge time and 100% charge at the full charge time. when you first charge any rechargable battery make sure you do a full charge and then a full discharge with another full charge afterward. If you do not do this the life of the batery will be significantly diminished.
I hope this information helps. If you want more information in this subject ask a more direct question.

  • Is there memory for charge cycle

Hi all. I recently bought a Nokia lumia 520 and have this experience with the battery, where only 1-2 days i cam use the phone and after i need to recharge.so i decided to buy a second battery pack(original one of course) and have 2 batterys in case i am one of the battery is completly discharge change the pack with the one charged 100%.my question is if there is a memory that holds the charge cycles? Why am i asking this, is because i will charge both batteries with the same telephone, of course not simultaneously. Is it possible to destroy the batteries charging them with the same telephone or is it possible to destroy the telephone? Please help me with this dilemma.best regards,Emi

  • Lumia 1520 Charging Cycles

I feel that I am using my phone too much that I have been charging it almost twice daily. Does anyone know the max charging cycles of the battery for the Lumia 1520? Thanks.

ok i see your point now. if you search these forums, you will find the answer to your question. but the long and short of it is that that 10,000 cycles is a theoretical maximum. and of course it depends on the temperatures the battery is exposed to, storage conditions, humidity, and the obvious usage patterns.
i tend not to worry about things like that, because if the battery dies prematurely within a year or two, then i may start to worry. but i have phones in my collection from 1994 that still charge and work on the original battery!

  • What is the max charge cycle?

What is the max charge cycle?
If it reach the max, will apple replace it under warrenty? or it not covered, and I have to buy new battery?
Like when you go to System Pref > About this mac > Power > Recharge Cycle.
It will tell you the amount of charged you made. What is the max you can recharge?

A properly maintained Apple notebook battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity after 300 full charge and discharge cycles. See http://www.apple.com/batteries for lots of good info on Apple batteries.

  • Power Adapter/charger LED flickers?

Searched the PB forum but haven't found this one...
My 1ghz Ti PB power adapter charge LED (the plastic circle at the end of the plug that goes into the computer) starts flickering slightly. Just a very slight rapid flicker. There is no damage to the plug that I can see. When this happens, the screen flickers slightly at the same time. I have a new inverter board that I'm going to install to fix a (separate) back light problem and I'm wondering if these two are some how related? Or is the adapter going bad? Don't have another one to try to see if the problem disappears. Anyone had this problem?

Hi, Adrift. Your adapter ringlight should never flicker, period. If you don't have any other access to a known-good adapter, take your PB and adapter to a local Apple dealership and see whether they have a good PBG4 adapter with which you can perform a quick test. This used to be a simple matter when Powerbooks that used the same adapter as yours were still for sale and demonstrators were on display; it may be less convenient now that the MacBooks and MBPs use a different adapter. But many stores will still have good older adapters around for use in testing, and may let you use one for a few minutes at no charge. If it doesn't flicker, replace your adapter.
Do you have a good main battery in the Tibook? If so, and if your adapter is intermittently cutting out or losing voltage, I would expect the display and all other components of the PB to be powered by the battery during the split-second outages of power from the adapter, without any loss of data or function. If you have no main battery or a dead one, then even a momentary loss or diminution of power from the adapter carries high risks: of the loss of unsaved work in progress, and of directory corruption potentially leading to the loss of stored data.
I know nothing about the parameters that govern when or how quickly the battery takes over for the adapter or the adapter takes over again from the battery, but of course under normal circumstances, unplugging the adapter cable from the computer with a good battery in place carries no risk at all. So the switchover, at least in that direction, must be instantaneous. Perhaps it isn't as quick going the other way, and that may come into play in your situation. This is just speculation, though.
I can't tell you whether problems with your inverter board and/or backlight might be related to the adapter problem.

  • Does a usb cab to 60 Watt L-Tip Power Adapter charger for Apple MacBook Pro Laptop Charger exist

    does a usb cable
does a Usb cable to60 Watt L-Tip Power Adapter charger for Apple MacBook Pro Laptop Charger exist? i have an external battery pack i would like to use to charge my iphone and macbook pro.

Not that I am aware of.  An Internet search on your part will be required.  If you should find something to that effect, note it will not be endorsed by Apple and the magnetic connector will probably be in violation of Apple patents.
    Ciao.

  • Does Zen micro power adapter charge Zen Vision

i tied the good old power adapter on my Vision M but it seemed to charge it...a little...but then it didn't do anything so i'm wondering if i just need to try it again or does it not work period...

i just happened to look in the instruction manual that came with the VM and it says absolutely nothing about NOT powering it through the AC adapter that was previously provided with the Zen Micro, not that i'm gonna lose sleep over it but why can't that power adapter charge the vision M?

  • MacBook Air 2014 came with 12 charge cycles

I just got a brand new 13" MacBook Air from an authorized apple reseller, I went to check the battery cycles and there are already 12 on it even though I have only plugged it in once. Does anybody have an explanation for this? thanks

For what it's worth (and I don't mean to concern you at all as it is most likely very normal), I just checked the cycles on a Brand New Macbook Pro 13-inch (Mid 2012) and it has completed 0 charge cycles. I broke the seal myself and checked immediately without use.
