Add a pin to bitlocker startup

hi all, I updated my T500 to use Bitlocker with the TPM. Now, to further secure it against brute force password attacks, I want to add a PIN to the startup.  I see that gpedit.msc option to Require additional authentication at startup but I am not sure of the sequence of events.
With bitlocker already protecting my C drive, if I set the option to Require TPM startup pin, where do I set the initial pin? When I look at the C drive options it doesn't show anything other than suspend, or manage. Manage only shows save or print recovery key again.
So, how do I tell bitlocker and the tpm to use a pin and where do I set that pin? Do I need to decrypt, set the policy, then re-encrypt? I do not want to get locked out with it wanting a pin I have not yet set.
Any help appreciated - MS online help is not clear at all on how these options should work.
thanks
Solved!
Go to Solution.

I know this post is kinda old but I just figured out this problem myself so thought I'd share. This is for those of us that turned bitlocker on prior to doing any configurations on the generic Windows 7 install and wish to add PIN functionality on top of the TPM after the fact.
(1) First go into your Group Policy (run-> gpedit.msc) as an administrator. In the group policy settings, goto
Local Computer Policy > ..... >Bitlocker Drive Encryption > Operating Systems Drives
Find 'Require additonal authentication at startup', and set to enable. Then under the title for 'Configure TPM startup pin', set to "Require startup PIN with TPM". Apply/save and exit.
(2) Now goto your command (CMD) prompt as an administrator. We will now force Bitlocker to use both TPM and PIN. Type in:
manage-bde -protectors -add c: -TPMAndPIN
where 'c:' is your drive. If in doubt, look at some examples first by adding the "-?" command at the end, e.g. "manage-bde -protectors -?"
This will lead to a command line prompt for you to enroll a PIN. This has to be numbers. If you want to use letters, you have to go back to Group Policy (step 1) and do the addional step of enabling Enhanced startup PINS.
Now after all this is done, if successful, you can see that the options have changed when entering the "Manage bitlocker" GUI under control panels. Furthermore, when you first bootup into windows, you should be prompted for a preboot authentication PIN. Dont forget to backup your recovery keys just in case they prompt you of course.

  • HT5429 how do i add multiple pins to a map

I would like to bookmark a map and add multiple pins to it.  How is this done?

You add a pin to Apple's map by simply holding your finger down on the map for a second or two where you would like the pin to appear.

  • HT3500 How can I add WPS (pin)  [for a WiFi capable CAMERA] to Time Capsuale WiFi

    Hi,
How can I add WPS (pin)  [for a WiFi capable CAMERA] to Time Capsuale WiFi network?
    Regards

I suggest that you use the Add Wireless Clients feature in AirPort Utility.
Normally, this feature is used to add a wireless printer, but it will work with any wireless device.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Select the Time Capsule and click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab at the very top of the screen
    Click Add Wireless Clients

  • Surface Pro 2 using Bitlocker startup PIN

    Hi All,
In our enviorment we're using the Microsoft Surface Pro and Microsoft Surface Pro 2 with bitlocker encryption using a startup pin.
The operating system using is Windows 8.1
We're using the folowing GPO settings for Bitlocker encryption:
    - Require Additional Authentication at Startup
         - Allow Bitlocker without a comatible TPM > unchecked
         - Configure TPM startup > Allow TPM
         - Configure TPM startup PIN > Allow startup PIN with TPM
         - Configure TPM startup key > Allow startup key with TPM
         - Configure TPM startup key and PIN > Allow startup key and PIN with TPM
    - Enable use of BitLocker authentication requiring preboot keyboard input
The Microsoft Surface Pro doesn't have any issues with the startup PIN.
The Microsoft Surface Pro 2 sometimes doesn't respond to the keyboard, there is no difference between a USB keyboard or a Surface Type Cover.
The only difference between the Microsoft Surface Pro and pro 2 is the UEFI bios.
Is there a solution to get bitlocker PIN authentication working on the Surface Pro 2.
The only workaround we've found is hold volume down at startup wich is not a ideal solution to instruct the users.
The oktober firmware upgrade didn't solved this problem.

We have seen the exact same thing as below. For reference, we are re-imaging ours with Windows 8.1 Enterprise Edition.
In addition to the issues listed below, I can't seem to figure out how to activate the supposed "bios level" on-screen keyboard that was supposed to be added to Surface Pro (v1) in a Firmware flash and should be part of Surface Pro (v2).  Does anyone
have experience with activating that?  I read an article a few months ago that claimed MS had addressed the latter with a flash to Surface 1.  I hope I didn't dream it.  :)
Please address this - I have high level personnel evaluating Surface vs. Dell and this will make a big difference in the final decision!

  • How can I add a program to the Startup program

When I copy a program that I want to add, I don't get a Paste menu item when right-clicking Startup menu item found when clicking Start and All Programs, so I can't add it to the Startup program

I figured out a way to do this:
1- Copy the shortcut to the program (or the program's .exe (execute file)) you want to add to Startup
2- Right-click Startup (after selecting it in All Programs) and select Explore
3-In the file structure that opens, right-click Startup
    4-Click Save.
P.S. '''alan_r''' Thanks for trying but your suggestion didn't solve it.

  • Add or remove applications from Startup in LION

We just did a migration from Tiger to Lion for our primary Mac user and now, on her new machine running Lion, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Entourage launch every time she starts up her PC.  Microsoft Excel was not even in her Startup on her old system.
I followed the instructions provided in this link:  http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/#appstartup for adding and removing applications from a user's Startup in Lion.  For this user, there are no Microsoft 2008 applications listed.  She is the only user on the computer - there is a guest account that is shown but cannot be accessed or modified from the Users and Groups folder in System Preferences.
So, my question is:  Is there another way to see what would be the equivalent of the "Startup" folder in Windows on an iMac running Lion?  Or am I missing something?  How did Excel get into Startup?  How do I get it out?
    Marty

As it turned out,  I noticed that when you shut down or restart the computer, a question box comes up asking "Are you sure you want to restart/shutdown your computer now?"  There is a check box next to the option "Reopen windows when logging back in", which is checked by default.  I discovered that if you uncheck that box just one time, it will not attempt to open any applications that were open during any previous shutdown. It appears to sort of 'wipe the slate clean'.  That is how I got it to stop launching Microsoft 2008 applications on every startup even when they were not in the user's Login Items.  And they were not set for Open At Login.
This one led me a merry chase!  Thanks to all who responded.

We already updated kernel to patch level 30 , re-created SAPJSF user on client 000 and 550 (our installation client informed
during installation - for this re-creation, we used function module ****). we didn´t apply any support packages on this

  • Is there a way to add more pinned pdfs to the taskbar icon over the 10 default ones?

I need to know if there is a way to increase the amount of quick-access pinned files through right clicking the taskbar icon?

I think the answer to all your problems could be the excellent FREE Sound Editing Program called AUDACITY.
    Download it here:-
    http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
What you need is the "Change the Pitch" filter in the "Effects Menu".
It will change the pitch without altering the speed.
(The "Change Tempo" filter is also excellent as you can alter the speed of the sound without making it sound squeaky or rumbly).
    Ian.
PS. You will need to export the offending soundtrack to Audacity and then import the doctored version back into FCE.

  • Add-on is displaying on startup.

on a tab when firefox comes up.

Which add-on is it? Would you mind listing out your extensions?
You can check what you have installed here: Tools > Add-ons > Extensions.

  • Firefox 20: why won't my add-on's load at startup?

My add-on's install easily the first time, then load in the current browser session, but then, when I restart Firefox, they no longer load. they are viewable from my Add-on's Manager list, and as far as I know they are not on the unsafe blocked list. If I disable each one, and then re-enable them, then they show up in the main menu and function properly, but only for that current browser session.
Does anyone know why the add-on's won't load permanently?
here are the ones I have installed:
    about:addons-memory 6
    full screen 3.4
    ad block plus 2.2.3
    URL fixer 4.1
    auto pager 0.8.0.8
    self destructing cookies 0.3.6
    quick gestures 1.1.1
    thanks in advance!

thank you Midhun and AaronMT for the responses. Midhun, as far as I can see, that only applies to desktop version Firefox. I guess I should mention, I'm using Firefox mobile 20 on Android 4.1.2.
AaronMT, I do have developer options enabled, but the 'Don't keep activities' option was unchecked. that's not the problem.
    any other ideas?

  • Bitlocker with PIN and can't encrypt second drive

I have my OS drive encrypted, and have a boot PIN. All is well. I'm trying to encrypt the data drive in my laptop, and I'm getting a prompt
"The Group Policy settings for BitLocker startup options are in conflict and cannont be applied". The options are configured as this:
    Configure TPM startup: Allow TPM
Configure TPM startup PIN: Allow startup PIN with TPM
Configure TPM startup key: Allow startup key with TPM
Configure TPM startup key and PIN: Allow startup key and PIN with TPM
I've tried setting the bottom two to not allow, but that doesn't seem to matter. I've verified that there are no domain GPOs that adjust these settings.
    What am I missing?

    Hi,
How did you encrypt the data drive? Which settings did you change?
For the Fixed Data Drives encryption, the group policy located here:
    Computer Configuration\Windows Components\BitLocker Drive Encryption\Fixed Data Drives
It seems your operating system drive encryption group policy is correctly configured.
Use the command gpresult /h gpreport.html to export the group policy settings, check if there's any clue.
And, this is for your reference:

  • T520 - Win7 Ent - UEFI - GPO Enabled to allow Bitlocker enhanced pin, but windows refuses it

Before I start -- I'm not sure if this is a windows issue or a lenovo issue, but had to start somewhere.
I have installed our standard image of Windows 7 enterprise using Microsoft Deployment Toolkit on a new T520.  The drive is configured for and OS installed in UEFI mode.  Bitlocker is enabled automatically as part of my standard deployment task sequence, but with a numeric PIN.  We have a GPO in place that enables Bitlocker Enhanced PIN's, which can include alpha or symbol characters. Normally, after a deployment is complete, I go into control panel and change the bitlocker pin to a new pin which includes alpha, numeric, and symbol characters.  When I try to change the pin on this T520, it refuses, stating that it can only accept digits (numeric) 0-9.
I've run into that error before if a laptop had not been placed in the correct OU, or the GPO's hadn't been applied to it for some other reason, but as best as I can tell that is not the case here.  I've run a group policy results report from the DC, and one from a command prompt on the affected pc using gpresult, and both say the Bitlocker Enhanced Pin GPO is enabled and applied.
I have also just experienced this same issue on a Lenovo X220 Tablet.  We've only recently started seeing/using the UEFI mode on newer laptops, so up until now we've always installed windows in legacy BIOS mode.  As such, I decided to re-image the X220 forcing it to run in legacy bios mode.  After the re-install of windows, it accepted the enhanced bitlocker pin without issue.  I suspect if I reimage the T520 in legacy BIOS mode it will work as well, but have not yet tested this.  I was hoping to find a solution rather than simply working around the issue by not using UEFI.
I found the sections below in an article on technet regarding bitlocker with UEFI and enhanced pins, and what I understand from this is that it is fully supported by windows, but if the laptop doesn't support the full keyboard in the pre-boot environment, windows will refuse the enhanced pin and force a numeric only pin.
Is this a problem with the laptop/UEFI version? Or with Windows? Or am I maybe just doing something wrong?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    PIN and enhanced PIN
For a higher level of security with the TPM, you can configure BitLocker with a personal identification number (PIN). The PIN is a user-created value that must be entered each time the computer starts or resumes from hibernation. The PIN can consist of 4 to 20 digits as specified by the Configure minimum PIN length for startup Group Policy setting and is stored internally as a 256-bit hash of the entered Unicode characters. This value is never displayed to the user. The PIN is used to provide another factor of authentication in conjunction with TPM authentication.
For an even higher level of security with the TPM, you can configure BitLocker to use enhanced PINs. Enhanced PINs are PINs that use the full keyboard character set in addition to the numeric set to allow for more possible PIN combinations and are between 4 and 20 characters in length. To use enhanced PINs, you must enable the Allow enhanced PINs for startup Group Policy setting before adding the PIN to the drive. By enabling this policy, all PINs created can utilize full keyboard characters.
NoteTo use enhanced PINs, your computer's BIOS must support using the full keyboard in the pre-boot environment. Users can run the optional system check during the BitLocker setup process to ensure the PIN can be entered correctly in the pre-boot environment. You should verify that the computers in your organization are compatible before making the use of enhanced PINs an organizational requirement.
When setting a BitLocker PIN by using the BitLocker setup wizard, the Manage-bde command-line tool, or through Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) remote administration, you can use the wide character set. However, system firmware, either BIOS or Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI), may only support a standard EN-US keyboard and keymap during system startup. Additionally, BIOS-based systems are limited to 7-bit ASCII input during PIN entry. Thus, the use of either non-English characters or keys that differ in position from the EN-US keymap, such as QWERTZ and AZERTY keyboards, may cause boot-time PIN entry to fail. If your computer is affected by this limitation, it should be identified during the system check run by the BitLocker setup wizard. If it is not identified during the system check and the PIN is not able to be entered, you will need to supply the recovery key to unlock the drive.
We recommend that users set their keyboard layout to EN-US during enhanced PIN entry to avoid PIN entry failure in the pre-boot environment. If you are unable to enter an enhanced PIN from your keyboard even after setting the keyboard layout to EN-US, you must use a numeric-only PIN.
The following list identifies characters that are not currently supported by system firmware:
Roman characters on keyboards with a non-EN-US keymap. For example, "Z" and "Y" on German keyboards and "Q" and "A" on French keyboards.
Characters that are not available in 7-bit ASCII. For example, characters with umlauts, grave accents, and tildes.
Symbols that are not available in 7-bit ASCII. For example, squared superscript, fractions, copyright, trademark, and international currency symbols.
    <snip>
Yes. Starting with Windows Vista with SP1, BitLocker can be used with computers that use Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI)-based system firmware.
Will BitLocker work on computers that use UEFI-based system firmware?
    Solved!

Very interesting!  I'm not sure if anyone has tried BitLocker with enhanced PIN on UEFI installation of Win7 64-bit.  Please give me a couple days to repro this and investigate.  Thanks for your patience.

  • Mass deploying bitlocker with a PIN

I am using Altiris Deployment Console, and am creating a Win 7 Enterprise image that will have bitlocker enabled with a PIN.
The plan is to set a default PIN, since that needs to be set before bitlocker is enabled, and when the compute gets deployed, have the user set a new PIN.
I have everything 99% good to go, but when trying to send the command to enable bitlocker, "manage-bde.exe -on C: -rp -TPMandPIN", the computer requests the PIN entered and confirmed. I cannot figure out how to make a script to enter the PIN automatically,
so we do not have to enter it manually for every computer we image.
Are there any solutions to this, or is it a pipe dream?

    Hi,
You shold be able to use something like this to add the pin. It should be possible if you add the pin after -TPMandPIN as well.
%SYSTEMROOT%\system32\manage-bde.exe -protectors -add c: -tp somepin

    Does this work?
    manage-bde.exe -on C: -rp -TPMandPIN 123445
