Add Printer Does Nothing

I have been trying to get a network printer installed in my iBook G4 but have run into a lot of problems. I am trying to connect to a samba shared printer (served by a desktop running ubuntu) and I finally was able to get OS X to see the printer. I went through the Printers & Fax, did "add printer," found the printer under "more printers..." then set the driver type. I got the nice swirly pinwheel for a few seconds but then I was spit back to the Printer List with no new printer and no error message.
I thought maybe this was just more problems with my Samba shared printer so I tried setting up a printer as an IP printer using LPD but the same thing happened: it found the printer and I set the driver but then it spit me back to the printer list with no new printer and no error message.
Finally, I tried hooking the printer directly to my laptop and adding it that way. Once again, I was returned to the printer list with no new printer and no error message.
I tried foraging through the forums to see any fixes but so far came up empty. I fixed the permissions on my disk using "Disk Utility" but that didn't help the problem.
Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

You don't mention the printer type, so I'll guess it is a non-postscript one. CUPS on Ubuntu and on OS X work basically the same - they both "assume" that input they receive over standard CUPS protocols is postscript. (Mac-to-Mac printer sharing uses proprietary software to negate this.)
Two options - try selecting "generic postscript" for driver on OS X. (sends postscript from Mac to ubuntu)
or,
Create a second queue on Ubuntu for the same printer, but make it a "raw queue," with no driver associated. You will have to use a CUPS-capable driver on Mac OS X in order to print via standard CUPS protocols (Windows Printing is one of these).

  • File Print Does Nothing

    Hi Everyone,
    After two months of working perfectly with two different printers, selecting "File > Print..." now does nothing from any application. The computer doesn't pause or hang, no print dialog appears; it's as if I never selected "File > Print..." at all. "Print" is NOT grayed out from the drop-down menu, but the applications act like it is. "Cmd-P" also does absolutely nothing.
    When I select "File > Page Setup..." a blank dialog box with a single blank drop-down menu appears. If I click the drop-down box, my only choice is "Save As Default"
    Again, this happens from any application: Firefox, Pages, Word, Preview, Photoshop, Mail, iTunes, etc.
    My two printers are:
    1) a Brother HL-1430 connected via USB to my Time Capsule. I've tried networking bother wired and wirelessly. The network works fine; Time Capsule back ups run every hour.
    2) a Brother MFC-260C connected to my iMac via USB. I have reinstalled both printers and their drivers.
    Other computers can print to both printers with no problems. The printers worked on my iMac for a couple of months before this behavior appeared. I have used the Disk Utility to repair permissions and check for any other problems, but that (predictably) did nothing. I don't know exactly when the behavior appeared; it was about 10 days ago.

    While I haven't used this version for 10.5, I have used its predecessor for 10.4 and it was very helpful on several occasions.

  • File Print does nothing!  Help, help, HELP!!!!!

    Just got a brand spankin' new MacBook Pro (2 Ghz model). Now before you pat me on the back for my good fortune, I'm not terribly thrilled with it.
    Before I used the MacBook, I used the Migration Assistant to transfer everything from my old 12" PowerBook G4. Everything seems to work fine EXCEPT printing.
    No matter which application I am in, I select File>Print, and absolutely nothing happens. No window, no error, no printing. Nothing. Same effect if I press command-P. The only way I have been able to successfully print is using Microsoft Word and clicking on the print icon in the toolbar, which bypasses the print window that usually appears. Problem is, it only picks the default printer (I have 4), and only prints one copy. I need that window!
    I have already tried the following, with no effect whatsoever
    Resetting printing system from the printer setup utility
    Repairing permissions
    Logging into a different account
    Resetting PRAM
    PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

    I am having a similar issue, but am on a G4 Powerbook.
    No matter what application I try to print from, if I try to File > Print I get a spinning beachball of death for about 30 seconds before the printer windowshade box finally shows up and I can print. I used the Migration Assistant to move from an iBook running 10.4.3 to this PowerBook running 10.4.5 (but I don't know if there is a connection there).
    If I print from Word using the print icon in the toolbar the pages prints immediately.

  • Unable to add a printer. When I click on the "Add Printer" button, nothing happens.

    I have IE9 on Windows 7 PC.  I have compared my Internet options with another PC and it does not seem to have this issue. Any suggestions?
    NOTE: Please don't suggest changing browsers.  That is a work-around not a solution.

    Clicking the Add a Printer actually not much related with any web browser but more with the operating system functionaity.
    I would suggest you to try updating windows by running Windows Update, reboot the PC and check for any change.
    Also make sure the Print Spooler Service is running:
    Click the Start button and typr run into the search box.
    Open the Run Application within the results.
    Type net start spooler, then click OK
    You should see a black dialog for a single moment.
    Next go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers and try adding a printer again,
    If the option still not function  I would recommend you to contact Microsoft support as the problem relies within the operating system and not within the HP software.

  • HT3500 I cannot connect Macbook (OS 10.6.8) to Epson XP 400 wirelessly. It works when connected to a USB cable. Both printer and Mac are on the same network and Norton/symantic is OFF. The Epson will not show up in "add printer". is off.

    It seems that the epson xp-400 works wirelessly only with 802.11n wireless network not with 802.11g or earlier.
    Does anyone else know about this. I read it on the epson support site for epson xp-400.
    Also epson xp-400 will not work wirelessly if it is already connected to a computer with a USB cable.

    Are you able to print the webpage to 'Adobe PDF' to convert it to pdf.
    Which Browser version, OS version and Acrobat version are you using?

    I fear that I screwed up somewhere in setting up my 1-click setting and now when I select a photo and click on order prints, it just says connecting then does nothing. It doesn't even take me to the 1-click screen to allow me to change account info. Does anyone know of a way to at least get me back to the 1-click page to allow me to associate my mac account to iphoto?

  • How can I enter the sync key from my phone? Clicking "add a device" in Firefox 4b11 does nothing.

    I'm running Firefox 4b11 on Windows 7 and nothing I do allows me to add my phone to sync. Clicking on "add a device", "change password," or "My Sync Key" does nothing, so I can't even get my sync key to add the phone manually.

    You should be able to add a device by opening the Firefox Mobile preferences and then scrolling to the Sync section. Press the connect button and you will get a 12 character pass phrase. On your desktop open the options window and then the Sync tab then use the add a device button to enter the 12 character code from your mobile.
    If you are not near your computer you will need the Sync Key that was given to you when setting up Sync.

    I was having problems printing from my Canon LBP6000.  Print jobs remained held in the queue.  I uninstalled and reinstalled the Mac CAPT Ve r340 driver from Canon's website, no improvement.  The printer works fine with my Windows laptop.
    I found an option to remove all printers from the Print preferences section. I can't remember how I did this, but all printers were removed.  I reinstalled the above driver, but now in the 'print & scan' - 'add printer' section, I have no printer options.  And no idea how to get printer options.  So very open to advice.

    The ability to see the LBP6000 in the Add Printer view is not reliant on the printer driver but the USB cable. If you have the printers USB cable connected directly to the Mac, as opposed to having it connected to the Windows computer you mention or to some sort of USB hub, then it should appear in the Add Printer > Default view. If it does not show, then try another USB cable. You can also open System Information on the Mac and select the USB section in the left column. Then in the top right pane you will see all the USB busses on the Mac and the LBP should be seen under one of the busses if the USB cable is okay.
    With regards to the action to remove all printers, I would bet that you performed a reset of the printing system.

  • CP1025nw, repeptetive smudges, poor print quality, pushing toner button does nothing.

    I haven't used this printer in a couple of years, so I sense some of my issues might be related to that.  First up, the print quality is quite poor. Despite having a new black toner cartridge, the B&W printing isn't very strong; it's blotchy in some areas with random spots in others. Second, there are repeating color splotches all over the place. I've attached a photo. Third, pressing any of the toner buttons does nothing, no beeps, blinks, or movement. So far, the only things I've tried was toreplace the black toner cartridge and blow out the interior of the machine with compress air. I also removed the drum and gave that a quick and careful cleaning.. Any thoughts?

    it has nothing to do with the connection, because even if i try to print a test page from the printer itself (not using my laptop) it still wont print. it says "printing" on the screen, but does nothing. and the green light on the power button blinks the whole time... please please help, its super frustrating, ive un-installed, re-installed, plugged it in, un plugged it, plugged the usb cord in before i realized it wasnt a connection problem, taken the ink out.. i dont know what else to do... again, its not a connection problem.. i tried to go into the settings on the printer itself and clicked printer status or something liek that and it attempted to print out a report, but nothing prints... again, the screen says "printing . . .  "   but nothing happens and it will continue to say "printing  . . .     This sounds like it may be a firmware problem.  The first thing to do is check to see if there are any available firmware update.  I'll include a link to those instructions below.  Next, make sure the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet.  Plugging the printer into a surge protector, power strip, or power backup can cause it to become under powered resulting in strange problems like this one.  If the firmware is up to date and plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet doesn't help, follow the steps in the document below.  If that doesn't help, you will need to replace the printer.  Hope this helps.

    After updating to v. 24.0 (and restarting, several times) ALL add-ons (regardless whether they work or not) are marked "(disabled)". I tried clicking "Enable" button for each add-on and nothing happened. There is only one add-on which is marked as incompatible with this version (but it was also incompatible with previous version, and so marked).
    Clicking "Update Add-ons", gives a short list of add-ons but "Install Updates" button is pale and doesn't work. I can only sort list by name or last update.
    Also, I disabled Ask Toolbar and that went well. When I click "Enable" button (button works ONLY for this add-on) it takes forever to get note: “Ask Toolbar will be enabled after you restart Firefox”, I used to get this info in seconds time before this update. (I do not really want Ask Toolbar, I just used it to see whether if I disable and then enable an add-on might do the trick.)
    Bottom line – I can not tell if add-on works (i.e. if it is enabled or disabled) unless I try using it.
    Even when I posted this question and installed Troubleshooter, it's also marked as "(disabled)"
