Adding AAAA records to DNS manually (Server Manager don't let you add them)

Using the following webpage http://www.isi.edu/~bmanning/v6DNS.html#named.conf I have been able to get IPv6 name resolution setup, so that clients will use IPv6 for connecting to my server on the LAN when possible (e.g. Mail, iChat, Web).
This is working well, and the records also display in Server Manager. I have tested add/remove/update to existing records in DNS to make sure the manually added AAAA records don't get wiped out, and they don't .
NOTE: Put AAAA records above A records. Not sure why, but this prevented a few problems I initially had.
I haven't had a go at making a reverse lookup zone yet for IPv6, but if/when I do, I shall post here.
Below is a before -> after of the following files I had to edit, using nano under sudo in Terminal:
Zone name: test.com
File: /var/named/zones/db.test.com.zone.apple
Owner: root:wheel

Tony,
Be aware that your ;SERIAL directive MUST change if you made changes to the file.
The <serial-number> directive is a numerical value incremented every time the zone file is altered to indicate it is time for named to reload the zone.
I do not know for sure, but this might be why the data has not been wiped out or otherwise modified by Named or might have caused or is hiding some of the difficulty you experienced.

  • Do I need AAAA records in DNS for MPs for clients connecting via DirectAccess?

    This is my situation:
Have had SCCM 2007 r3 installed for some time
Have DirectAccess implemented for over 2 years
    We are in Mixed Mode
Have always had issues with DA connected clients getting adverts from SCCM
DA connected clients do not report heartbeat
In troubleshooting I have added the ipv6 boundaries and followed all the articles on FW settings and DA settings.  Still no luck.
I ran across an article that said you need to have AAAA records in DNS for you MPs.  Is that true?  and if so, how do I get them into DNS as they are not there right now.
Any help (especially if I am on the wrong track) would be helpful.
    Thanks
    Eric

Yes, I know this is an old post, but I’m trying to clean them up.
No CM07 does not need a AAAA record. Honestly this is going to be a DA issue not a CM07 issue.

    Dear Kong Chong Shun,
From your information, I'm sorry I could not get several information. Did you upgrade your BPC Clients too, lets say BPC Administrators ?.

  • Where do new added contact go when you add them to address book???

In address book on your mac you used to be able to designate where new contacts were added so you could find them easily. From what I can tell the option is not longer available. Suggestions?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
From the open Application Address Book go Menu->Help:Address Book Help. There's lots of good information there, and you can search (like using an index in a dead-tree version).

I just got my first cell phone, an iPhone5.  I added my contacts via my Mac.  But the phone on its own imported the contact info of all 5000 of my Facebook "friends."  When I go to one of them, hit edit, and try to delete them, the phone tells me that I cannot delete a Facebook friend.  This is a nightmare.  Please, I beg you, tell me how I can get these Facebook friends off of my contacts list.  Thank you!

  • Half of my bookmark toolbar bookmarks are gone and it will not let me add them back. It is as if that half of the toolbar is restricted from adding anything.

Not sure any more details are needed to supplement the question.

A couple of articles that may help, as your issue seen specific to the toolbar see [[Toolbar keeps resetting]]. For other possible causes see the[[Bookmarks not saved]] article.

    Hi all.
I was just wondering if most of you use a check list for checking service, servers, hardware etc.
If so please can I have some examples if you have any.
    Thanks in advance

  • How to register VSPackage into SQL Server Management Studio?

    Hi All,
I am a newer to VSPackage, I want to create a VSPackage for SQL Server Management Studio(SSMS), now I can create a VSPackage project and debug it in Visual Studio but don't know how to debug it in SQL Server Management Studio and how to deploy VSPackage to
    SSMS by MSI? Thanks

By the way I find a extension.vsixmanifest file and some .pkgdef files under
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Tools\Binn\ManagementStudio\Extensions\  folder, and they are very similar with VSPackage files. Do know this is useful or not.
    Hi Vic Zhang,
After some research, There are some notes. SQL Server Management Studio is built upon the Visual Studio Isolated Shell, which inherently supports extensibility (add-ins/plug-ins). It is possible to tap into the Visual Studio extensibility services to surface
custom capabilities within SQL Server Management Studio; however, we do not discourage this, keep in mind that such extensibility is not supported, so there may be issues with backward/forward compatibility. Microsoft does not publish documentation for extending
    SQL Server Management Studio.
If you want to debug VSPackeage about SSMS, I recommend you debug in Visual Studio and not in SSMS, open the project and attach to the process of SSMS.exe, then debug it.
About the issue of finding the “RootKey”, a .pkgdef file is way to encapsulate application configuration information in an easily editable, distributable, and deployable form. And it registers the Extension Manager (which is written as a VS Package). If
you install SQL Server 2012, the .pkgdef of SSMS is located in the following path, you can check the “RootKey” in this .pkgdef file.
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Tools\Binn\ManagementStudio
There is detail about a PkgDef, you can review the following article.

  • ColdFusion 9 Server Manager can read everything but Datasources

I am attempting to use the new Server Manager feature in CF9.  I can connect to my webservers with Server Manager and I receive the following error:
"Failed to read the data sources from SERVERNAME.  Continue to read mappings from SERVERNAME"  YES/NO
If I click Yes then I can view all properties of the server, except the data sources.  The strange thing is that if I create a new data source, it is successful.  I can even apply the new datasource to other CF9 servers! If I log out of Server Manager and re-launch, I can no longer view the previous data source that I created.
Anyone have any ideas why I can't view my CF9 data sources from Server Manager?

The good news is once you add them by hand you can back them up using a CAR and have them be portable to any other instance.
I haven't tried going from CF8 to CF9, we have a limited footprint of CF8 servers.

  • Cannot launch SQL Server management studio

    Hi people,
I cannot launch the sql server management studio. In the event log, appear the next entry:

What can i do for repair this? Uninstall the sql instance? This affect to sap system installed?
    Other options?
    More thanks

    Hi Ruben,
What is the MS SQL Server version and SP level ? Which windows server is it - 2000/2003/2008 - 32bit/64 bit ?
Is the database/SAP up and running ?
I got to see another old thread for similar problem from you. Is it a regular problem or just something happened recently ? Any configuration changes/any activity related to MS SQL Server or any OS changes done recently ? But as the link suggests in your old thread, may be you can give it a try or try upgrading the sql server to a higher SP level ?
Starting SQL Server Management Studio Express
If you are an SAP customer, I would suggest you to open a customer message if the problem is urgent and in productive/live landscape.
    Thanks

  • Added photos to the video timeline but they don't display.

I have added some photos to the video timeline but they don't display. The end of the last clip is frozen and then the next clip starts once the time for the photo display has elapsed.
A previous photo that I'd inserted in the project previously DOES run correctly. I suspect it may be to do with the fact that I've used cutaways in part of the video. However, where I'm inserting the photos is not in a section where there is an existing cutaway.

It would appear that it's a bug with iMovie. It won't let me add new photos to the duplicated project, but it WILL let me add them to the original project.
After searching the Discussion forums, it would appear that it has affected other users; some have used 'workarounds', but the solution doesn't always work for all. Hope Apple can address it.

  • Serving static AAAA records with IOS' DNS server

    Hi guys,
Has anyone managed to get IOS to serve statically defined AAAA records? I do this just fine with A records as such :
    On the router :
    ip dns server
    ip host ns.example.com 1.1.1.1
    ip host somehost.example.com 1.1.1.2
    ip dns primary example.org soa ns.example.org [email protected] 21600 900 7776000 86400
    From the Linux box :
    unixhost$ dig @1.1.1.1 somehost.example.com
    ; <<>> DiG 9.8.1-P1 <<>> @1.1.1.1 somehost.example.com
    ; (1 server found)
    ;; global options: +cmd
    ;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 32168
;; flags: qr aa rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0

Interestingly whenever I add a static ipv6 entry, I get the SOA as  an answer instead of the actual AAAA record. But from the router itself,  it can use the statically defined hosts just fine.
    On the router :
    ipv6 host somehost.example.com 2001:1:1:1::2
    From the Linux box :
    unixhost$ dig -t AAAA @1.1.1.1 somehost.example.com
    ; <<>> DiG 9.8.1-P1 <<>> -t AAAA @1.1.1.1 somehost.example.com

    ;; MSG SIZE  rcvd: 108
But from the router, it works just fine :
    router#ping ipv6 somehost.example.com
    Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 2001:1:1:1::2, timeout is 2 seconds:
    Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 0/1/4 ms
    I'm running 15.2(2)T1.
    Thanks,
    Eric Lauriault

    Hello Everyone,
in case someone runs into this thread: In our case it turned out that the problem was related to the DNS Server service. Regardless of the above configuration settings on the NIC and in the registry, the DNS server will always register in DNS using
all of its IPs that the service is listening on. To change this behaviour you can tell the DNS service to only register individual IPS in the registry:
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DNS\Parameters
Add a Reg_Multi_SZ called "PublishAddresses" and specify the list of IPs
In our case we added just one of the three configured IPs and from then on the server only registered this address and not the other ones.

  • DNS on Server 2008 R2: DNS A records strangely disappear

    Hello,
I am experiencing very strange problems with my DNS (Server 2008 R2, AD integrated). Several A records for Windows clients are missing, and even if I register them as static they somehow disappear again. However, the AAAA records are still around (IPv6 is
running in default configuration, I haven't touched that at all), but another strange thing here is, most of them are listed as STATIC records.
At present, the DHCP server is set to NOT register the clients with DNS. DNS accepts only secure updates, scavenging is disabled. (I am somewhat reluctant to disable dynamic updates on the DNS server completely because I think the DCs register and update
lots of records dynamically). When I register all missing A records, most affected clients loose it again within an hour or so but some seem be fine. It seems to me that about 20 % of the clients are affected.
I have enabled Directory Service Changes auditing, and its in fact the machine account which appears to be responsible. Clients with A records generate 10 entries (ID 5136) in the DC's security log while the problematic clients generate only the
first 5 events. So it appears to me that they can delete the record but not create a new one. All clients are set to register themselves with DNS.
As far as I remember I had Windows clients with missing A records in the past once in a while but the problem became really serious only about one and half weeks ago.
Does anyone have an idea of what might be going on here? Can I safely disable DNS dynamic updates without adversely affecting AD/DC functionality? Generally, we don't actually need dynamic updates.
    Cheers, Georg.

What operating system are the clients?
I would like to first point out how registration works with static and DHCP, and the differences depending on how DHCP is configured.
    =====================================================
    1. By default, Windows 2000 and newer statically configured machines will
register their own A record (hostname) and PTR (reverse entry) into DNS.
    2. If set to DHCP, a Windows 2000, 2003 or XP machine, will request DHCP to allow
the machine itself to register its own A (forward entry) record, but DHCP will register its PTR
    (reverse entry) record.
    3. If Windows 2008/Vista, or newer, the DHCP server always registers and updates client information in DNS.
Note: "This is a modified configuration supported for DHCP servers
running Windows Server 2008 and DHCP clients. In this mode,
the DHCP server always performs updates of the client's FQDN,
leased IP address information, and both its host (A) and
pointer (PTR) resource records, regardless of whether the
client has requested to perform its own updates."
Quoted from, and more info on this, see:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd145315(v=WS.10).aspx
    4. The entity that registers the record in DNS, owns the record.
Note "With secure dynamic update, only the computers and users you specify
in an ACL can create or modify dnsNode objects within the zone.
By default, the ACL gives Create permission to all members of the
Authenticated User group, the group of all authenticated computers
and users in an Active Directory forest. This means that any
authenticated user or computer can create a new object in the zone.
Also by default, the creator owns the new object and is given full control of it."
Quoted from, and more info on this:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc961412.aspx
    =====================================================
Therefore, based on that, even if you have DHCP set to not register, and the clients are 2008/Vista and newer, then DHCP is doing it. That explains why you see the system account doing it.
Now, I think it will actually help you if you configure DHCP to register everything, configure credentials, and add the DHCP server computer object to the DnsUpdateProxy group. Don't add anything else to this group.
This way DHCP controls everything and it's easier to track AND more importantly, DHCP can update already registered records.
    ====================================================
    In summary:
    DHCP DNS Update summary:
    - Configure DHCP Credentials.
The credentials only need to be a plain-Jane, non-administrator, user account.
But give it a really strong password.
    - Set DHCP to update everything, whether the clients can or cannot.
    - Set the zone for Secure & Unsecure Updates. Do not leave it Unsecure Only.
    - Add the DHCP server(s) computer account to the Active Directory,  Built-In DnsUpdateProxy security group.
Make sure ALL other non-DHCP servers are NOT in the DnsUpdateProxy group.
For example, some folks believe that the DNS servers or other DCs not be
running DHCP should be in it.
They must be removed or it won't work.
Make sure that NO user accounts are in that group, either.
(I hope that's crystal clear - you would be surprised how many
will respond asking if the DHCP credentials should be in this group.)
    - On Windows 2008 R2 or newer, DISABLE Name Protection.
    - If DHCP is co-located on a Windows 2008 R2, Windows 2012, Windows 2012 R2,
or NEWER DC, you can and must secure the DnsUpdateProxy group by running
     the following command:
      dnscmd /config /OpenAclOnProxyUpdates 0
    - Configure Scavenging on ONLY one DNS server. What it scavenges will replicate to others anyway.
    - Set the scavenging NOREFRESH and REFRESH values combined to be equal or greater than the DHCP Lease length.
