Adding Classes to the JAR File's Classpath

Ques 1- Can I use the wildcard * symbol in Manifest file to add classes/othes jar files to the JAR File's Classpath.I have folder named - Lib . where there are many jar files. Now,do I have to add each jar file by- Class-Path: Lib/jar1-name Lib/jar2-name . Instead, can I do this- Class-Path: Lib/*.jar OR Class-Path: Lib/*.class

Ques 1- Can I use the wildcard * symbol in Manifest file to add ... other jar files ...?No. You could, however, place all your needed JARs in JavaHome/jre1.x.x/lib/ext - if this is a way for you.
Ques 2 ??
RIDICULOUS....105 views has been made but YET NO ANSWER.What hindered you to test it yourself?
And the things we don't know far exceed the things we know. Why do you wonder?

  • How  to include the inner classes in a jar file in netbeans ide

    Dear java friends
how to say to netbeans ide that it has to include the
inner classes in the jar file.
(i have one single applet class
with two inner classes that show up
in the build/classes file but not in the jar).
The applet works in the viewer but not
in the browser (I believe because the
xxx$yyy etc should be in the jar)

First, please stop posting the same question multiple times:
    Duplicate of http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5269782&messageID=10127496#10127496
    with an answer.
Second, If your problem is that you can't do this in NetBeans, you need to post to somewhere that provides NetBeans support - like the NetBeans website's mailing list. These forums do not support NetBeans (or any other IDE) - they are Java language forums.

  • Did u use jar files as classpath for appletviewer?

as tested, jar files can not be used as classpath for appletviewer.
    java command is bellow
    appletviewer -J-classpath -Jc:\folder00\some.jar; -Jc:\folder01\any.jar; MyAppletClass
the jar files (or classpaths) above do not work.
I am not sure about my test, so i post my Q here for confirming it.
    thx

appletviewer needs HTML code to run an Applet similar to how the Applet would be run from a browser. It does not have a Classpath option.

Where should the jar file be Palced - i am using Tomcat Server.
How Can i Access the class files .. Very Urgent .. Please Help me ..

What is showing a file not found error? The web browser? if so, that's probably not a problem with the jar file.
Also, have you expanded your jar file to make sure that you jarred it up correctly?

  • Finding class inside of the jar file...

    Hi,
please could someone explain me, what is the difference between this object mapping...
    env->FindClass("com/dir1/dir2/ClassA");
    and
    env->FindClass("Lcom/dir1/dir2/ClassA;");
because if class 'ClassA' resides inside of the jar file, which is appended to the classpath, Lcom/dir1/dir2/ClassA; don't succed and FindClass returns NULL!!!!
Instead of if i use 'com/dir1/dir2/ClassA' string FindClass method ends with success....
But i don't understand this...i was wondering that all my objects, not default java objects, should be mapped as L<class>;....:-((
    Please heellp

I have noticed that a class have several notations which have been brough together of late. Even ObjectOutputStream write both java.lang.String and java/lang/String, arrays appear as [Ljava.lang.String; and the code will decode Ljava.lang.String; correctly even though it will not get generated.
It is possible that this historical discrepencies are more visable at the native level and are yet to be fixed up ????

  • How to load all the classes in a JAR file at runtime?

    Any clues o:
"How can I force JVM to load all the classes in a specified JAR at once?"
    Thanx!
    -Rajeev

Well I was thinking may be there exists an option with "java", when I
am starting an application from a jar file, I could force it to load all
the classes in the JAR. I don't want to do it programically. Is there such
an option available?? Or in other words can I ask JVM to not do the dynamic
    loading for the JAR??
    Thanx.
List all JarEntries and convert the paths to fully
    qualified class files
    e.g file in jar
    [1] /com/mycompany/proj/X.class
    should become
    [2] com.mycompany.proj.X
    then for each entry issue
    Class.forName( [2] );

  • How to combine the classes from 2 jar files into 1?

    Hi there
I have got 2 jar files with the same name but the classes that they contain are different. So, I want to combine those 2 files into 1. Could anyone please tell me how to add the classes in a jar file to another jar file?
    Thanks for your help!
    From
    Edmund

The jar utility allows you to extract files as well as put them into a jar. This is in the java docs.
You might have to hand modify the manifest file if it was hand modified in the first place. All you should have to do is copy the text from one file to another. The manifest will have the same name so you will have to extract to different dirs so it isn't overwritten.
    Steps:
    -Create dir1 and dir2
    -Extract jar1 into dir1, Extract jar2 into dir2.
-Manually examine manifests and combine if needed.
-Copy files from one dir to another.
-Use jar tool to create new jar.

  • Dinamyc class loading and jar files

I'm new to java. I would like to load some plugins in my application (it's going to be packaged as a jar at the end). I managed to find some dinamyc class loading examples but they search for the classes to load in a directory.
    This is the code:
        public static void main(String[] args) {

            FilenameFilter filter = new FilenameFilter() {
                public boolean accept(File dir, String name) {
                    return name.endsWith(".class");
            String[] pluginFiles = pluginDirectory.list(filter);

    Thanks.

You can use the java.util.jar.JarFile class to enumerate the contents of a jar. It's not good practice to search for plugins in this way though. A plugin may well involve serveral classes, which don't all have to be internal. Furthermore its wise to avoid any comitment about the mechaism by which class files are to be fetched. You might want to do it remotely, some time, or load them from a database.
What seesms to be the standard approach is to put a list of plugin classes into the jar as a text file.
Plugins for a given purpose usually implement some specified interface, or extend some abstract class to which their objects can be cast once loaded (without this they aren't really much use).
Say your plugins implment org.myorg.WidgetFactory then you put a list of them, one fully qualified name to a line, in a file or jar entry called META-INF/services/org.myorg.WidgetFactory. You framework picks up all such files from the classpath using ClassLoader.getResources() and loads all the classes whose names if finds, hence you can add new sets of plugins just by adding a new jar or class directory to the class path.

  • Execution from JAR files and Classpaths -- Help

I am confused about how classes are resolved when running from within a JAR file, and why this is different than running a class that is not inside a JAR file.
I have an application that uses classes from a third party library stored in a JAR file (biojava.jar) . If I run the app from the class file it works as expected and is capable of finding the external classes when the path to the biojava.jar is on my classpath. It also works if biojava.jar is instead placed in the extensions folder jre/lib/ext folder without an explicit path entry in my classpath.
However when I package all my application classes up in a JAR file and try to execute the application from the JAR file it will ONLY work if I add a manifest entry to myApp.jar ... Class-Path: biojava.jar AND I place the file biojava.jar in the SAME directory as the Packaged JAR application. I would like to find a way to make this JAR file work for anyone who has biojava.jar in their classpath or ext directory. In other words I don't want my user community to have to copy the biojava.jar file when I email them myApp.jar. This community will already have biojava.jar on their CLASSPATH.
How can I make my app within a JAR recognize either the user's CLASSPATH or ext folder? I have tried reading the documentation and many experiments but the only way it works is as described above.
I am running Running Windows 2000.
    java version "1.4.1_01"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.1_01-b01)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.1_01-b01, mixed mode)
Here are the results of my experimentations:
    The following Works:
    Manifest: Main-Class: org/biojava/app/SequenceSpiral
    Manifest: Class-Path: biojava.jar
Place biojava.jar in the same directory as SequenceSpiral.jar
    java -jar SequenceSpiral.jar
    This works perfectly
    NONE of the following work
    0) Placing biojava.jar in my jre/lib/ext directory instead of the same dir as SequenceSpiral.jar
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/biojava/bio/seq/FeatureFilter
(this is the first class referenced from biojava.jar)
    1) Just see if it will find the proper jar on my classpath
    Manifest: Main-Class: org/biojava/app/SequenceSpiral
I have biojava.jar on my classpath but not in same directory as SequenceSprial.jar
    java -jar SequenceSpiral.jar
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/biojava/bio/seq/FeatureFilter
    2) Specify the name if the jar in the Manifest Classpath and see if it will find the proper jar on my classpath
    Manifest: Main-Class: org/biojava/app/SequenceSpiral
    Manifest: Class-Path: biojava.jar
I have biojava.jar on my classpath but not in same directory as SequenceSprial.jar
    java -jar SequenceSpiral.jar
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/biojava/bio/seq/FeatureFilter
    3) Specify the path of the jar in the Manifest Classpath
    Manifest: Main-Class: org/biojava/app/SequenceSpiral
    Manifest: Class-Path: d:/biojava/biojava.jar
I have biojava.jar on my classpath (D;\biojava\biojava.jar) but not in same directory as SequenceSprial.jar
    java -jar SequenceSpiral.jar
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/biojava/bio/seq/FeatureFilter
(note that in this case it is not fnding my main even though the Main-Class is specified)
    4) Specify current directory and biojava.jar in the Manifest Class-Path
    Manifest: Main-Class: org/biojava/app/SequenceSpiral
    Manifest: Class-Path: .;biojava.jar
I have biojava.jar on my classpath (D;\biojava\biojava.jar) but not in same directory as SequenceSprial.jar
    java -jar SequenceSpiral.jar
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/biojava/bio/seq/FeatureFilter
5)Specify current directory and the URL of biojava.jar in the Manifest Class-Path
    Manifest: Main-Class: org/biojava/app/SequenceSpiral
    Manifest: Class-Path: . d:/biojava/biojava.jar
I have biojava.jar on my classpath (D;\biojava\biojava.jar) but not in same directory as SequenceSprial.jar
    java -jar SequenceSpiral.jar
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/biojava/bio/seq/FeatureFilter.
Thank you very much for any help or suggestions,
    David Maynard

I did some more testing and I think I now understand what is going on.
I don't like it, but at least I understand it.
The problem: I have an app packaged into a JAR file, myApp.jar. It has a dependancy upon an external JAR file extern.jar.
extern.jar is on my Classpath (and also in jre/lib/ext)
    1) For some reason (bug?) java -jar myApp.jar does NOT use the classpath or the jre/lib/ext mechanisms to find .jar files needed to resolve references to external classes. This seems to be true even if you add an explicit -classpath argument on the command line!
    thus
    java -jar -cp c:\\absolutePathToMy\extern.jar myApp.jar
    also fails as does
    java -cp c:\\absolutePathToMy\extern.jar -jar myApp.jar
    2) Inside the myApp Jar file you can specify a URL to an jar extension jar file but the URL IS RELATIVE TO THE PATH WHERE THE myApp.Jar is executed from! If I add the Manifest item Class-Path: ..\..\..\myexterndir\extern.jar then
    java -jar myApp.jar
works correctly and resolves the external references.
This is why several people have reported that this class-path mechanism works ONLY when the extern.jar file is in the SAME DIRECTORY as the myApp.jar file when they had added a Class-Path: extern.jar to the Manifest.
However together these two items make it IMPOSSIBLE to distribute myApp.jar to others and have it work since the path names statically encoded inside the jar are relative to where the jar gets executed from. If I move myApp.jar to a different location on my hard drive it may also fail.
In my case I know all my customers already have extern.jar (5MB) installed on their classpaths and I would like to just send them the myApp.jar ( .5MB ).
However I don't see how to do this given the current specification of a JAR file, and the bug that makes all -jar file act like they have the Sealed=true property.
I tried explicity setting Sealed=false in the manifest but this didn't seem to have any effect.
I hope that this will save others the many hours of time it has taken be to determine that JARS are not well suited for deploying apps with dependenncies on external libs.
I also hope that someone can show me how execute a JAR and specify a classpath that doesn't get IGNORED my the classloader used in loading the jar classes.
    This is using java version:
    java version "1.4.1_01"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.1_01-b01)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.1_01-b01, mixed mode)
Does any one know this bug is fixed in a later release?

  • Jar file and classpath problem

    I0m writing a program that use the kunststoff.jar Look&Feel.
Now I would like to put all I'm writing into a jar file but I always have a NoClassFoundException when I try to start my application.
    here is a MANIFEST:ME I'm using:
    Manifest-Version: 1.0
    Created-By: 1.4.2-beta (Sun Microsystems Inc.)
    Main-Class: JListaR.JListaR
    Class-Path: kunststoff.jar img\ .why this don't work?

Unfortunately you can't embed jars within a jar and
expect them to be referencable for the classpath from
outside the main jar. The "Class-Path" attribute in
the manifest is used to refer to other jar files
    outside of your jar file.
The usual approach to solve this problem is to unpack
the jar files you want to embed and then rejar
everything together in one big jar file again. This
    isn't always a great approach though, I know I'm
looking for an alternative. So far my only alternative
is dynamic class loading using a classloader, however
this isn't great if you need to refer to several
hundreds or even thousands of classes.thank you very mach...now I understand because it dosen't work correctly!

  • How do I import classes in a jar file?

I have the following directory structure, each directory is a seperate package of the same name as the directory
    RPGUniversal
    RPGMap
    RPGCharacter
RPGCharacter is not done yet so I am ignoring that package for now.
RPGCharacter and RPGMap both depends on classes inside the RPGUniversal Package, but are independant of eachother and RPGUniversal is completely independant.
I want to place each package in it's own .jar file for use as a library in later programs.
I placed all the compiled classes for RPGUniversal inside the proper directory structure, I then used this command to place it in a jar:
    jar -cf ./RPGUniversal.jar ./RPGUniversal/*
I then tested the contents with this command:
    exodist@Abydos:/stuff/JProject/test$ jar -tf RPGUniversal.jar
    META-INF/
    META-INF/MANIFEST.MF
    RPGUniversal/ADTs/
    RPGUniversal/ADTs/t1.jpg

    RPGUniversal/Interfaces/Trackable.class
    RPGUniversal/Interfaces/Tracker.class
    RPGUniversal/Interfaces/RPGMapComponent.class
    RPGUniversal/Interfaces/RPGMap.class
so far all good, next I delete the RPGUniversal directory leaving the only file in the current directory RPGUniversal.jar
next I create the RPGMap directory and give it the proper .java files and directory tree.
I then run a script to compile every .java file
    for i in `find ./ -name "*.java"`; do javac "$i"; done
and I get a ton of dependancy errors:

In my application classpath following jars are used : jms.jar,naming.jar,namingClient.jar,ibmorb.api,ibmorbapi.jar,jndi.jar
I need to know the jar file name for this class : com/ibm/jvm/ExtendedSystem.And also tell me the solution to solve the above error.Anyone know the solution please reply as early as possible..Thanks in advance

Have you checked if any of the jar files in your class path contains the missing class ?

  • Name of the JAR file

    can you please tell me,
the name of the JAR file where this class "'com.ibm.ejs.ns.jndi.CNInitialContextFactory' " exists .
    Thanks

in fact, i need to know the name of the JAR file
    because i am getting exceptions,
...classnotfound......i want to put that JAR file
in the classpath to avoid classnotfound exception.Uhm... if the stuff is not in your classpath, then you have no choice but to run through your file system and look into every JAR you can find.
so, if i get to know the name of the JAR file
.....i would be able to remove the runtime error.Doubt it. Websphere doesn't care for your classpath, it uses its own. So if it doesn't find the class, it's not there.

  • Java Files inside the jar file cannot be read or accessed through Eclpse

The Java File inside the jar file of the eclipse cannot be accessed through the Eclipse . It shows error for the modules in the jar file .
But when compiled with adding the jar files to the class path the compilation is successful .
How can i browse through the files in the jar like going into the function definition .
    TIA ,
    Imran

Open MPlayer OSX and show the playlist (command-shift-p) then drag the file into the playlist. Click the file in the playlist and click the "i"nfo button. What does it list for file, video and audio format?
Not all of the codecs used in avi and wmv files are available for OS X so I'm guessing your file happens to be using one that isn't...
