Adding hal to rc.conf??

what is the wording to add hal to rc.conf?? I have tried adding  hal, hald, hal start..to rc.conf daemon section but it gives error on boot saying  "hal unknown command'..or something like that...i have followed wiki beginners guide and am stuck at this part..what should the rc.conf hal entry look like?
Just to add if i use /etc/rc.d/hal start   it works..and I can use my mouse and keyboard..

Put in the DAEMONS array. This is what it looks like in my rc.conf:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng hal network net-profiles !netfs @crond @openntpd @avahi-daemon @cups @sshd @smbnetfs @privoxy @irqbalance oss @mpd)

  • [SOLVED] Adding "cpufreq_ondemand" to rc.conf has no impact.

I'm on Turion M520 with 2 cores capable of running @ 800 MHz at no CPU load. I added "powernow-k8" and "cpufreq_ondemand", but saw no impact on the frequency.
After installing "trayfreq" from AUR, cores successfully scale frequencies. As to find the problem, I assumed "trayfreq" does something which "cpufreq_ondemand" does not.
    Indeed,
    cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
in the Terminal (xfce) outputs "ondemand"
whilst executing the same in the shell outputs "performance".
    I figured
    echo "ondemand" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
would do the trick, but I get "Permission denied", even as root.
    Just curious, thanks!

I didn't think it was necessary, given the fact that "cpufreq_ondemand" should do the trick. It would be pointless to add it in the first place.
    Wiki once more:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CP … figuration
It might not be the most intuitive way to run things, but any governors you plan to use (apart from performance) have to be loaded as modules first before they can be set by the daemon or other tools.

  • Adding eth0 to rc.conf?

Well, I have finally taken the step to install Arch Linux (not from LiveCD), but I have a problem. In order to make a connection to the Internet I have to load the module eth0, because I want to load it each time I have decided to put it in rc.conf instead of modprobe. The problem is though I don't really know what the name of my eth0 is. I'm using a live CD to connect to the internet, and I have taken a ook in the modprobe on the LiveCD but it's empty. Is there a way I can find out what eth0 device I have?
Since I can connect to the Internet it must have worked, but I have no idea where to find it?

First install and run hwd (pacman -S hwd) - it's in staging repo http://xentac.net/~tur/repos.php. Hwd (hardware detection http://amlug.net/new-projects/hwd/hwd.html) will not change anything itself it will only advise you some changes. It will also generate sample XF86Config. About fonts: try also installing some additional font packages (pacman -Ss fonts will show you what's available. I advise you to install at least ms fonts). You can also config fonts from kconfig in kde. And the last thing: do not install all files from extra :-) just the ones you need.
Before asking next question be sure to read first http://www.archlinux.org/docs/en/, http://wiki.archlinux.org/ and search forums (there is search option in the right top corner). Also you can have faster response on arch linux irc channel (see arch linux homepage).

  • Adding repos to pacman.conf: A vs B

It seems that people do things in two ways.  I personally feel that one of these ways is "right", because it is the way that Arch does it by default, but that doesn't mean that the other way is "wrong".  Anyway, I wanted to see what most people do with pacman.conf
    Example A:
To use this repository, add the following to your /etc/pacman.conf:
    [shadowhand]
    Server = http://archpkg.wgilk.com/shadowhand
This is also the way that z4ziggy reccommends that people add the Archie repos.
    Example B:
Add a file to /etc/pacman.d called "dibble" containing:
    # dibble: dibblethewrecker's pkg repo
    # http://dtw.jiwe.org
    [dibble]
    Server = http://dtw.jiwe.org/pkgs/dibble
    Add this line to pacman.conf:
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/dibble
So, what do most people do?  14 day poll.  I'd also appreciate input from the devs if they have any.

    tomk wrote:
dibblethewrecker wrote:I personally feel that one of these ways is "right", because it is the way that Arch does it by default
The default pacman.conf has examples of both, dibble - [testing] is commented, but it's using Server, not Include.
Most new servers are single and unmirrored, so that's my vote, but I think it's more of a discussion than a poll. Why does it matter, by the way?
Because we need code to parse pacman.conf to check that people have certain repos list.  I wrongly assumed people used Include over Server but it seems I was wrong!
kth5: nice idea but no - if you have all your repos listed in one file then syncing custom will only sync from the first Server address listed

  • @hal @cron in rc.conf

I was under the impression it is a bad idea to background hal in rc.conf. Yet, I have read some remarks here and there by people who have done so with no negative effects experienced.
Also, is it safe to background cron? I'm using dcron (Dillon's Cron Daemon).
    Thanks.

Inxsible wrote:Also, the time needed for you to reach your desktop and are able to do anything with the system, is sufficient for all the backgrounded daemons to start.
My assumption is when the tty login screen appears, init has finished with it's boot up work. After that, the system switches to tty7 and x starts followed by my desktop.  Without backgrounding hal, the desktop appears 28 seconds after bootup and about 3 or 4 seconds after the tty login appears. When I background hal, the tty login appears at the 20 second mark and I'm sitting at a blank screen for about 5 or 6 seconds before my desktop appears, still at the 28 second mark. My guess is x.org waits for hal to start before it does anything. I believe x checks hal for hardware detection. I may have to change its settings to not auto-detect hardware but I'm a lazy guy .

    device descriptor read/64, error -110
I just got that same error message (but not some of the others you have) after a system update to kernel 3.4.3-1-ARCH. This happens for me when using a (slow) USB drive... but only under a heavy read/write load. I'd never had this problem before using the same applications and hardware.
So I poked around in the kernel source code. That message occurs when the kernel tries to send a Control Message to a USB device, but the operation times out. But... you can change the timeout value.
If you do a "modinfo usbcore", you'll see that one it's parameters is "initial_descriptor_timeout" and it defaults to 5000 milliseconds (5 seconds)... which is forever in the kernel world, but like I said, I've got a slow USB flash drive... and there's a comment in the code that one particular device needs a 10 second timeout.
So I'm going to try a larger value.
You can change it temporarily by entering "echo -n {some-value} > /sys/module/usbcore/parameters/initial_descriptor_timeout" with root authority.
Or permanently, in a file in the /etc/modprobe.d directory and put an "options" line in it... see "man modprobe.d".

    yep. or you can
    nano /etc/inittab
and uncomment the line about the gdm, comment xdm though!

What is the proper way to get hal working ?

How do you get hal started seems that adding it to rc.conf [DAEMONS] does not work

Or is it just again lol

Mr Green wrote:But I would rather get it working in DEAMONS do you use @ in front of hal & dbus?
No. I remember when I installed GNOME I added
    portmap fam dbus hal
to the DAEMONS line in rc.conf, without @
Then I installed gnome-volume-manager and set it up. That picked up my ipod just fine, without any udev rule written by me.

  • HAL daemon fails to start

I've seen a couple of threads with the same problem but have not been able to get this daemon started. I keep getting a 'failed' output after calling hal with sudo privilages in /etc/rc.d/
I am a group member of the optical and storage groups. I've tried adding hal only right after syslog-ng in the daemons array as well as dbus and hal respectively, but to no avail.
I've tried starting, stopping, restarting, and everything fails. The only success I've had was starting dbus but nothing else.
I found it interesting that the ps aux command returns that the hal daemon is running which is odd after having failed starting/stopping it. It does'nt seem to work anyways.
    [chuck616@experimental ~]$ ps -A | grep hal
    728 ? 00:00:00 hald
    729 ? 00:00:00 hald-runner

    778 ? 00:00:00 hald-addon-stor
    781 ? 00:00:00 hald-addon-acpi
Anyone has any idea? I've also just noticed it says hal is deprecated does that mean hal is no unnecessary anymore? I'm only trying for it to recognize my CD drive and automount it to my desktop (using pcmanfm with the desktop switch)

  • Configuring httpd-ssl.conf on Leopard and Apache 2.2.6

    Hi everybody,
I recently migrated to Leopard from Tiger 10.4.10. On my Tiger client I had installed my own web server using mod_ssl with Apache 1.3 server. On Leopard, apache 2.2.6 and OpenSSL 0.9.7 are now installed and configurations files have changed.

I've read somewhere else that there would be a bug in 9.7 version of modssl and that we should install 9.8 version. Could anybody confirm this ?

    And VirtualBox says:

If I give modprobe vboxdrv the driver is loaded and everything is running smouthly.
Why happens that? I see no module in /etc/rc.d with name vboxdrv. How can modprobe works? It is looking in other folders 4 vboxdrv?

Thats what I did and it worked. But I want the driver to be loaded automaticaly in system start.
The question is why its no working by putting in rc.conf the vboxdrv?
My opinion: Its not loaded automatically cause it cant find it in /etc/rc.d which is the folder where the module section in rc.conf looks in. Where it is so I can copy or do symlink to /etc/rc.d search didnt helped.
    Thanks anyway
