Adding line to txt file and then rename

Hello there. I am trying to create a class that will add a line to a txt file and then if the nuber of lines are greater than 5 it will rename the file.
I think I have solved it with this class.
My problem is that the file2.renameTo does not work does anyone have any suggestions why?
         public void CopyLines(String string, String location, String fileName) throws IOException {
             BufferedReader inputStream = null;
             PrintWriter outputStream = null;
               GregorianCalendar calendar = new GregorianCalendar(Locale.UK);
            boolean b=false;
             try {
                 int counter = 0;
                  File file2 = new File(location + fileName);
                  ArrayList arrays = new ArrayList();
                  if (file2.exists()){
                 inputStream =
                     new BufferedReader(new FileReader(file2));
                 String l;
                 while ((l = inputStream.readLine()) != null) {
                      arrays.add(l);
                     counter++;
                 outputStream =
                     new PrintWriter(new FileWriter(location + fileName));
                  if (!arrays.isEmpty()){
                       for(int i= 0; i<arrays.size();i++){
                          outputStream.println(arrays.get(i));
                 outputStream.println(string);
                 if (counter>5){
                      String newFileName = location + fileName + calendar.getTime().getTime();
                      b = file2.renameTo(new File(newFileName));
             } finally {
                 if (inputStream != null) {
                     inputStream.close();
                 if (outputStream != null) {
                     outputStream.close();
         }

What is ". . .does not work. . ."?

    The problem is in the delimiters in your text file. By default, Read From Spreadsheet File.vi expects a tab delimited file. You can specify a delimiter (like a space), but Read From Spreadsheet File.vi has a problem with repeated delimiters: if you specify a single space as a delimiter and Read From Spreadsheet File.vi finds two spaces back-to-back, it stops reading that line. Your file (as I got it from your earlier post) is delimited by 4 spaces.
    Here are some of your choices to fix your problem.
    1. Change the source file to a tab delimited file. Your VI will then run as is.
    2. Change the source file to be delimited by a single space (rather than 4), then wire a string constant containing one space to the delimiter input of Read From Spreadsheet File.vi.
    3. Wire a string constant containing 4 spaces to the delimiter input of Read From Spreadsheet File.vi. Then your text file will run as is.
    Depending on where your text file comes from (see more comments below), I'd vote for choice 1: a tab delimited text file. It's the most common text output of spreadsheet programs.
    Comments for choices 1 and 2: Where does the text file come from? Is it automatically generated or manually generated? Will it be generated multiple times or just once? If it's manually generated or generated just once, you can use any text editor to change 4 spaces to a tab or to a single space. Note: if you want to change it to a tab delimited file, you can't enter a tab directly into a box in the search & replace dialog of many programs like notepad, but you can do a cut and paste. Before you start your search and replace (just in the text window of the editor), press tab. A tab character will be entered. Press Shift-LeftArrow (not Backspace) to highlight the tab character. Press Ctrl-X to cut the tab character. Start your search and replace (Ctrl-H in notepad in Windows 2000). Click into the Find What box. Enter four spaces. Click into the Replace With box. Press Ctrl-V to paste the tab character. And another thing: older versions of notepad don't have search and replace. Use any editor or word processor that does.

  • Scanning .txt file and outputting results?

    Greetings Everyone. My employer has charged me with a rather
    confusing task. Basically I need to scan a .txt file and retrieve
    some information from it. Here is a little background on the file
    itself.
    This is a feed file containing the information for employees
    such as name, department, employement status etc...Zeros are used
    in place of spaces in this file. What I am charged with is
    retrieving the employment status and name for every single person
    in the file (60,000+).
    I need to write a coldfusion script that can do the
    following.
    1. Scan a .txt file that is sent to me every night and look
    for the 99th character on each line of the .txt file
    2. If the 99th character is a 'T' I need to pull characters
    '10-50' (which contain the name for that person).
    3. Output the results of the scan to a coldfusion page
    displaying the individuals' names.
    If anyone out there can point me in the right direction I
    would be very grateful. I've been looking for websites on this
    topic but I have been unsucessful so far. Should I post this in the
    advanced section of the cf forums? Once again, thank you for any
    help you can give me.

    I guarantee you can do this! And it shouldnt be to hard so
    you can breath a sigh of relief... :)
    I would use <cffile action="read" file="filepath/name.txt"
    variable="fileContents">
    Then you should be able to do something like <cfset
    fileArray = ListToArray(fileContents, "#CHR(13)##CHR(10)#")>
    Now you have an array so you can loop through and try
    something like the following...
    <cfloop index="i" from="1" to="#ArrayLen(fileArray)#"
    step="1">
    <cfif fileArray
    NEQ "">
    <!--- Find 99th Char --->
    <cfset 99thchar = Mid(fileArray, 99, 1)>
    <cfif 99thchar EQ "T">
    <!--- Get Name --->
    <cfset empName = Mid(fileArray
    , 10, 40)>
    <!--- Change 0's to Spaces--->
    <cfset empName = Replace(empName, "0", "#CHR(32)#")>
    <cfoutput>#empName#</cfoutput><br />
    </cfif>
    </cfif>
    </cfloop>
    That should be close to what you could use... You may have to
    tweak it a bit... now if it is going though 60000+ records this may
    take a while...lol You might have to use the cfsetting tag to
    extend the normal request timeout..
    Hope this helps!

  • How to recognize string in txt file and set it as variable

    Hi,
    I have txt file and somwhere in it string starting with:
    data directory....:
    How (using batch file) find it in the text, read and set the value as a variable? I mean the string is:
    data directory....: c:\datadir
    where what I mean value is  in this case "c:\datadir". So I want batch file to read the txt file, find string starting with "data directory....:" and then set "c:\datadir" as a variable.
    Best, mac

    It's not very intuitive to do this sort of thing in a batch file. If you have the option to use PowerShell instead, I'd highly recommend it. It's the new way for performing command-line tasks in Windows, and there's no need to struggle with the old command
    prompt anymore.
    Here are PowerShell and batch examples of doing this type of string parsing:
    # PowerShell:
    $dataDirectory = Get-Content .\test.txt |
    ForEach-Object {
    if ($_ -match '^\s*data directory\.*:\s*(.+?)\s*$')
    $matches[1]
    break
    $dataDirectory
    # Batch file:
    @echo off
    setlocal EnableDelayedExpansion
    set DATA_DIRECTORY=
    for /F "tokens=1,* delims=:" %%a in (test.txt) do (
    set PROPERTY=%%a
    set PROPERTY=!PROPERTY:~0,14!
    if /I "!PROPERTY!" equ "data directory" (
    set DATA_DIRECTORY=%%b
    :RemovingSpaces
    if "%DATA_DIRECTORY:~0,1%" neq " " goto :SpacesRemoved
    set DATA_DIRECTORY=%DATA_DIRECTORY:~1%
    goto :RemovingSpaces
    :SpacesRemoved
    echo %DATA_DIRECTORY%
    endlocal

    Mike,
    you were right, you may not specify the extension of a file.
    Another thing i detected is that the loop of my data start with the index 1 instead of 0 !!!
    In this scenario, i have to read all the lines of the file and each time i should do a SQL-query,
    so that i can use the result to build my sales document.
    Do you know if it this is possible or have you any idea how to do this ?
    thx,
    Mario

                             i = st.nextToken(); //the next token (assumed) is the  '=' sign
                             i = st.nextToken(); //then after it is the href value.
                             getURL(st.sval); //retrieve address
              in.close();
         static void getURL(String s) {
              //Check string if it has http:// and truncate if it does
              if (s.indexOf("http://") >  -1) {
                   s = s.substring(s.indexOf("http://") + 7, s.length());
              //check if not mailto: do not print otherwise
              if (s.indexOf("mailto:") != -1) return;
              //printout anything after http:// and the next '/'
              //if no '/' then print all
                   if (s.indexOf('/') > -1) {
                        System.out.println(s.substring(0, s.indexOf('/')));
                   } else System.out.println(s);
    }Hope this helps. I used static methods instead of encapsulating everyting into a class.

  • Reading .txt files and put it into a TextArea

    Hi all,
    I got a problem! I have to make something like a messenger.
    I want to put the written text into a .txt file, after that I have to get the text out of the .txt file and put in into a TextArea.
    I would ike it to to that like this:
    ">User 1
    Hello!
    >User 2
    Hi!
    Now here are my questions:
    1: What is the moet easy way to do this ?
    2: How could i put Enters into a .txt file with Java ?
    3: How could i read all the text from the .txt file and put it into a TextArea WITH ENTERS ?
    Thanks for your help!
    Greetings, Jasper Kouwenberg

    use JTextArea.read(new FileReader(fileName)) for reading.
    and JTextArea.write(new FileWriter(fileName)) for writing.
    The enters should be ok if the user press enter and adds a new line ("\n") to the text area component.
    It will save the enter in the text file and load it correctly back to the text area.
    If you want to add enter programmatically just add "\n" string to the text area component.

    Hi Awen,
    This is quite easy to do, you can merely use the "read from spreadsheet file" function to get a 2D array (2 columns and n rows) and then use the index array function to get whatever row/colums you want..
    Hope the attached VI helps you

  • Plugin wanted to save emails as .rtf files and automatically rename them

    I've just changed from a PC to a MAC. On the PC I had a plug in for Microsoft Outlook called Message Save by Techhit for saving emails
    http://www.techhit.com/messagesave/
    It allowed me to quickly save emails to any folder on my hard drive as a .txt file and it automatically created a name with the date, to, from and subject fields.
    Is there anything similar for Apple Mail? Doing File > Save As and renaming them myself is too slow.

    Thank you - that all makes sense. It is, indeed, exactly what I did when I upgraded.
    I'm also writing this on the machine that crashed a few minutes ago (I posted the crash in another thread). I got back with a 'safe boot' - as I have done a few times before.
    I've also de-installed little snitch (and then done a safe-boot & then re-boot ) since that seemed involved. I de-installed Adobe flash, since that seemed to be a problem - I then re-installed the later, apparently fixed, flash. The most recent crashes don't seeme to have a problem with flash any more.
    I've posted the various ( generally different ) crashes. I also posted a summary of the similar lines that turn up in most of the crashes.
    Unfortuantely, I'm actually trying to use the machine to meet some urgent deadlines and all this is not making it at all easy.
    I had had great hopes for 10.7.2 - I thought that the crashes must be pretty common, so would have a common aetiology. There do seem to have been some fundamental changes to the file sytem and to the video interface (that seems to cause problems to brand new iMacs as well as to my 2009 iMac).

    I am trying to move my library and playlists to a new computer by burning to CD's. However, I followed the directions by going to File and then Library - then they said to go to burn CD(s) - I DO NOT have that option for some reason. How do I do this? I have done the library sharing thing but I am getting rid of my primary computer and am afraid I will lose the library.

    To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
    Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
    But however you do choose to link the two machines...
    Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
    and select the Library that you moved.  That's it.
    This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
    Your first option didn't work because you imported one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
    Your second option didn't work because you simply referenced her library on the old machine.

  • Powershell script - how to read a registry hive and store the value in text file and then again read the text file to write the values back in registry

    Hi All,
    powershell script Method required to read a value from registry and then taking the backup of that values in some text file.
    For example the hive is
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment\Path
    and under path i need to take back up  of values in some text file and then put some value in the registry after back is taken in text file.
    Also how to read the text file values so that we can again write to registry hive  back from the back up text file.
    Your help is much appreciated.

  • How to encypt a .txt file and how to decrypt a same .txt file when i need

    My requirement is i want to encrypt a .txt file and
    keep it in some folder. In that file we put database connection
    information. when ever we need that file we have to access it and decrypt
    it. with that decrypted values we have make connection with database.
    i am sending a code in which i wrote both encyption and decrytion in same file, but i want to do it separately.

    here is the solution you wanted it
    uses password based encryption
    but your requirements are for very badly
    designed code
    This is the encryption part
    it converts the inputfile original.txt
    into the outputfile encrypt.txt which
    contains the original encrypted

    i have a line drawing (black on white paper) i have scanned and need to make the white paper transparent, maintaining the line drawing, can i and then HOW can i do this in PS? this is for my business logo. ive used it for years but with a solid background. id like to have it just be the drawing over my photos with a transparent background.

    First let me apologize for posting a reply that was only suitable for advanced users.  Photoshop is broad and powerful therefore has a huge learning curve.  In fact I would state no one knows and uses all of Photoshop.  When we first get Photoshop it intimidate us and we're very uncomfortable using it.  Many thing are not intuitive there in much learning involved.  After some time we begin to know something and we are able to do some thing.  Learning become rapid and we start playing in Photoshop.  It is very important to play with Photoshop.  Playing with Photoshop and asking for help with in forums like this IMO is the best way to learn.
    Photoshop Power lies in layers, selection and automation.  However it takes knowledge to use photoshop well so most powerful tool you have ins Photoshop is the gray matter between your ears.  Most at one time or another want to watermark or put a logo on their image.  So its best to automate this process. All run into a problem in the process. "Size"  We find our assets vary in size and aspect ratios. Landscape, Portraits, Panoramas and others. This complicates automation.  Vector graphics works best when size vary greatly.  If you can not work out how to create a vector solution like a custom shape.  Create your Logo and watermark large thing scale down better the up. Text scale well for text uses vectors graphics however if you rasterize text it will not scale well.
    I do not type or do English well so let me do some screen captures.  I can not stress enough how important Black, White, Grays and Blending is when it come to image processing.  Become friends with Multiply, Screen, Overlay and Luminosity blending.....
    However when there is a white or black background though you can blend them you can not add a style like a drop shadow, emboss or make it invisible setting fill to 0 so only the style is visible.  When there is contrast between the logo and background it is easy to separate the two. To select the background and delet it to have the logo with a transparent background.  Many tools can be used to create the selection hee I use my action kill white.
    Vector Shape would work better for scaling However it would be best to create the logo from scratch in a vector program like illustrator but I never had the resources to justify the Creative suite. I only had Photoshop.  Recently Adobe gave me and other a year subscription to the creative suite for our participation here.  I still have not installed anything but Photoshop,  A while back I found a program that can create vector patf for black and white art work.  It will not be as good as using something like illustrator. However vector paths can be edited in Photoshop and cleaned up some. Here is the PSD it 13MB because od the gradient http://www.mouseprints.net/old/dpr/AmPm24-7.psd

    From the Finder menu select 'Secure Empty Trash'. If this or the suggestion above doesn't resolve the problem take a look at the various suggestions in this link:
