Adding page number after topic reference

How would I insert some type of bookmark after referencing a
topic, that, when printed to MSWord, puts the page number for the
topic and is updated when the topic is moved to a different page?
Since one version of our manual is printed, I need to show the
reader what page the referenced topic is on, for example, "Refer to
"Navigating the Program" (pg 242) for more on this topic."
Thanks in advance,
dar

Metroxing,
That behavior would occur if you didn't put the page number into the actual footer, but in a user-created box. Or it might happen if you had a section break after page one, and checked First Page is Different in the Layout inspector > Section button.

  • Adding Page Number in PDF using VBA

    Hi,
I need to add page numbers to around 8000 PDF files via excel VBA. I would need to do this every month. I am new to VBA coding but I can manage to write a decent code. It would be great if any one of you would share a VBA code that would allow me to add page numbers to PDF files. I have Adobe professional 6.0.
This is kind URGENT. All help will be welcome !!!
    Thanks

    Hi Vivek,
Could you please test the following solutions to resolve the issue.
    Solution1:
To display the page numbers from the first according to the section details i.e based on the number of sections in a report.
example: If a report has3 sctions and first section comes in 3 pages,2nd section comes in 4 pages and 3rd section in 2 pages, then total number of pages is9. Then the display of page numbers should be [page number of section in(1,2or3)/total number of pages in all the sections]
Insert a cell within a page and insert the formula
    =Concatenation("Page"" " ,PageInSection(1)" ")
If the above doesnu2019t works then please try the following solution.
    Solution2:
    --Create a report with section.
--Format the Section to "Start on a new page"
--Apply Page Layout to the report
--Insert a Cell and apply function  PageInSection()
I hope this will help you.

  • To reset page number after each new section in DeskI

I have a master/detail report where the master is "Customer name". I have a requirement to reset the page number at each new  Customer name.
i.e. If "Customer A" spans to 3 pages and "Customer B" spans 2 pages. Then for Customer A the page number should be Page 1 of 3, Page 2 of 3, Page 3 of 3. Then Customer B should have page number as Page 1 of 2,Page 2 of 2.
    1. The Page number can be obtained using PageInSection but only if I display it inside the section body and select "Repeat on every page" . But I need to display it in Page footer.
    2. I am unable to get the total No.of Pages per section unless I do some calculation using the no of rows per Customer. Is there any other way of getting this detail?
Please help on the baove 2 issues. This is very URGENT.

    Dear Thendral A,
The "PageInSection" function resets the page number to 1 at the start of each new section in the specified section level.
    For Example:
you have a report with two section levels, Country and Quarter.
You set every value of Country to start on a new page and enter the following syntax in a cell placed WITHIN THE SECTION THAT NEEDS THE RESETTING OF THE PAGE (it cannot be placed in the header or footer, as it can then not refer to the relevant section. It will give the value 0 instead), to restart page numbering to 1 for each value of Country:
    =PageInSection(1)
where (1) is Country which is section 1 in the report.
If there are any following sections these can also be reset via this formula with the use of the relevant section number.
This option can be used effectively when you set each value of a section to start on a new page. To do this, check the Start on a new page option in the Section Format dialog box.
Do remember that the result will only be seen in the report, when the option View/Page layout has been set, otherwise the result will be seen as a 0 at each section (this however does get correctly displayed in the Print Preview, and when printing without the page layout option set).
I hope that these information help you to understand the functionality of the PageInSection function.

  • Can i combine pdf, word and powerpoint into 1 pdf, and add page number?

hi, i've been tasked to create a proposal combining these document types into 1 pdf. does anyone know if i can add page number as well, before i pay for subscription?
    thank you!!

    Hi,
Combine Files tool in PDF Pack can combine multiple files into a single PDF file, but adding page number to each page of the single PDF file has be done in Adobe Acrobat.
You can subscribe to Acrobat Plus or download Acrobat XI Pro trial version  from www.adobe.com.  Please see more information about Acrobat Plus subscription at https://www.acrobat.com/acrobatplus/en/home.html?trackingid=JPZKR.
How to add page number in PDF file using Acrobat XI Pro:
    1. Open a PDF file
    2. Select "Tools" from top right corner
    3. Select "Pages" tab
    4. Select "Header & Footer"
    5. Select "Add Header & Footer" from pull down menu
    6. Select location for page number then click "Insert Page Number" button
    7. Click "OK" button

  • Cross References Will Not Display Page Number

Got some documents created in InDesign CS3 (MAC). When bringing them into CS4 (Windows) and trying to create a paragraph cross-reference the page numbers will not display. All the other text in the cross reference ("paragraph", the word "page", etc.) displays correctly. Even the cross reference under the "hyperlinks" toolbar shows nothing (instead of the usual # indicating a page number).
However If I copy some of the same pages into a new document and create a cross reference in it the page number displays correctly. But since it's over 300 pages I really would hate to have to do that!
    Any ideas?

Is it maybe because CS3 does not include the cross references function (not a feature until CS4)?
That's a real problem if we use an outside source to create a lot of our documents and they're working in a previous version.

  • How to you reference the current page number and total pages in a script?

I'm trying write a small script to make field invisible when the current page equals the total number of pages, but with no luck.
Can anyone advise how to do this?
I've tried various ways to reference my fields, this being the most basic:
    if(pageNumber == totalPages) {
    continuedBase.presence = "invisible";
// pageNumber has a run time property as "Current Page Number"
// totalPages has a run time property as "Number of Pages"
// continuedBase is a text field within the same subform as pageNumber and totalPages
    Thanks for any help offered.
    Russell

If you are asking how to get the current page and total pages you acn use these commands:
    current page ----- xfa.layout.page(this)
    total pages ------ xfa.layout.pageCount()
so your code woudl look like this:
    app.alert("The curent page is: " + xfa.layout.page(this));
    app.aler("The total number of pages is: " + xfa.layout.pageCount());
    if(xfa.layout.page(this) == xfa.layout.pageCount()) {
    continuedBase.presence = "invisible";

  • Hack for page number cross-references?

Anyone have hack for dealing with the lack of page number
    cross-references in the printed documentation?

Sorry for the slow reply, I needed to check with someone
about a macro they had but it is not one that will do what you
    want.
Is page numbering a requirement or do you would you be happy
with working links? If working links would be sufficient, there is
a macro on my site under Print Issues but it relies on the string
for the link being exactly the same as the string for the target.

  • Dynamic page number references?

Is there a way to have page number references dynamic, so that they automatically update if the pagination of a publication changes?
I've read about generating a dynamic table of contents, so I will be doing that certainly.
But what about page references that fall outside the TOC? For example, let's say there's a parenthetical reference in the text of a publication that says something like "see page 45 for details on XYZ." Can the page number here be somehow linked to its referent? Is there some way to tag an element (a heading, for example, or a text selection, or a frame containing a graphic) and then have a page number reference linked to that tag?
Sort of like how anchors work on the web.
    Thanks.

    Great, thanks.
p.s. I just did a search of the forum for "cross references" and the only result I got was this thread! Odd.
I notice from the InDesign help documentation that cross references seem to be for indexing. Not sure if that applies to my situation--for example, if you mention a particular sidebar later on in the text and want to refer the reader back to that sidebar...how would you reference the sidebar dynamically so when it changes location, the page number reference changes accordingly?

  • System added number after computer name

I recently noticed that the system has added a number in parens after my computer name, ie: MyMac (2). I'm sure there is a simple answer, and it isn't harming anything, it is more of a curiosity. If anyone knows why this would happen, please let me know. I have multiple macs in the house with me as the admin, but they all have unique names to identify them.

That generally happens when there is another computer on the network that has the same name. If all other Macs in the house have unique names, then it's probably just fluke.

  • Can I get total number of page in 'After Report' Trigger?

Currently, I use the format trigger of a field in Margin. In the trigger, I use srw.get_page_num(page_num) to get the current page number and call a package procedure to update a record. For example, if the report has 10 pages, it will update 10 times. However, could anyone know can I use another method instead? (Get the total number of page in one, then no need to update it every page) Thank you.
    (using Report 2.5)

Thanks. I know I can choose &TotalPhysicalPages in a field for displaying. But the problem is I need to update DB for that number. So I cannot refer that value of field to run a procedure in package for update the total page number in a record. Actually, this function is already done for years. (as I mentioned in my previous message) But I would like to know can I use another method to update it in one time instead. Thank you.

  • Adding logic based on page number

    Hi,
in my invoice report, i need to add some logic based on page number. My objective is to print a group of 4 lines (OMR Marks) on right hand side of the page. For example, on first page, print 1st line only, on second page, print 2nd line only, on third page, print 1st and 2nd lines only, on 15th page, print all four lines, on 16th page, print lines similar to 1st page i.e. print 1st line only, on 17th pages, print lines similar to 2nd page i.e. print 2nd line only.
Is there any way to use page number or some other variable that can represent page number in an IF condition? Your help is highly appreciated.
    Regards,
    sanjai misra

    Thanks for your reply.
I need to print OMR marks in our invoice report and i am not sure how to do it. I will highly appreciate your inputs.
I have to print OMR mark a per the logic given below
    1. Divide the page number by 15
    2. Based on remainder value, print 4 horizontal lines. For example,
if remainder is 1 then print only line 1,
if remainder is 2 then print only line 2.
if remainder is 3 then print line 1 and line 2.
If remainder is 4 then print only line 3,
if remainder is 5 then print line 1 and line 3
if remainder is 6 then print line 2 and line 3
if remainder is 7 then print line 1, 2, 3
if remainder is 8 then print only line 4 and so on
if remainder is 0 then print all lines i.e. line 1,2,3 and 4.
Could you please tell me how I could achieve this? If you have some code that you could share, it would be great.
OR is there some other way to achieve this?
    Thanks,

  • Can internal page number references be tracked between versions?

I'm laying out a large reference publication that has dozens and dozens of references to internal page numbers, such as "For more information, please see illustration on Page 56", but these references get scrambled with every new edition. Is there a way to track these references so that they automatically update as the content reflows from version to version?

    Yes, but it's... funky.
I use cross-references in InDesign documents, all the time. It's exactly what you're looking for; you put a Hyperlink Destination on whatever it is you need to refer to. You can choose a Page, an URL, or a Text Anchor.  I always choose a Text Anchor, and if I need to refer to an illustration I always group the illustration with a caption and put the text anchor in the caption.
I do this because InDesign's method for handling hyperlink destination is, once again, funky. And when I use this word I do not mean "a good beat" but "it smells bad." Because summoning a list of hypyerlink destinations just gets you a list - you can't Go To Page or whatever, and if you chose a unique name for a Page Hyperlink Destination it's pretty much up to you to keep track of it, InDesign won't help you. If you choose Text Anchor you can actually see it in the text. (Assuming you have Type -> Show Hidden Characters turned on.)
Once you've set up your Hyperlink Destinations, you can Insert a Cross-Reference. It is a formattable variable that you can point to any Hyperlink Destination.
Unfortunately, cross-references really only work well when they're within a single file. Cross-file cross-references (for example, from one InDesign chapter file to a different chapter file) are a major performance hit, and make ID basically unusable.
So yes, there's a way, but it's not great. If you need a method that is great I'd suggest looking into DTP Tools' Cross-References Pro plugin for InDesign. I'm not related in any way to DTP Tools, I'm not even a customer myself, but 100% of the people who have bought the plugin on my recco have been very, very pleased with its performance.
