ADF Framework Concepts - Architecture

Hi, I have the following doubts; I hope that somebody can help me.
First question, If I have only stored procedures that only have ansi sql such as: insert into table ..., delete from table, update from table... etc,
so Which would the problem in ADF Framework with Entity Objects if I work of this mode. What are the advantages of working with the insert, update and delete statement in the java class and not in an ansi sql since stored procedures?. And When Should I use business rules in the database?
Second question, I understand that my Entity Objects are my business objects, my View Objects are my data access layer (DAL), and my application module are my logic layer so,
Why Could I add validate methods or business rules in the Entity Object?, even as Best Tip, I have read in a manual of Oracle that i should add validate Method or business rules in the method of remove and create in the Entity Object and not in the View Object due to the fact that Entity Objects is who talks with the database.
So my question is, is it bad?, because I should have ALL logic of my use cases in my Business Rules and not in the Entity Object, I think that. Please could give me an observation about it?
Third question, Where should be my logic business in the Application Module?, and what kind of logic should be in the database.
Thank you very much if someone can answer1 me.

As Frank has suggested above, there is not a single best practice for where you put business logic, because the best practice depends on your goals.
If your goal is to enforce a set of rules in a way that get enforced for any client technology (SQL*Plus, Oracle Forms, Visual Basic, PowerBuilder, etc.) that might be accessing the database, then you really have no choice than to become a PL/SQL developer and implement the logic inside the database.
However, if your environment is controlled to the point that you know data updates can only be made through the business components in Java, then implementing the business rules in the middle tier gives you a single, central place to define and enforce them using the Java and declarative facilities ADF BC provides for that.
Again as Frank stated, the DML operations and where you choose to enforce the logic based on your goals are orthogonal issues.
Most customers use the default features of ADFBC that perform the INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE operations for you against the base tables, but the Dev Guide does document what's required to work with stored procedures when needs occasionally require that as well.

  • BPM-  ADF binding files architecture for ADF human taskflow.

    Hi,
I wast to know what is the architecture behind the hundreds of the file generated for the BPM adf integration for the human taskflow.
Is there any method of debugging why data coming to BPM human taskflow is not coming properly to ADF.
I appeciate any debug pointers, although these files are clearly xml files and we have no control over generation of these files but still we want to know how data been populated and how if any error occured of data corruption, how we will resolve.
REF we are facing major issues with the data corruption issues with the ADF BPM components.
    Thanks
    VIpin

    Hi Vipin
This post has an interesting discussion related to your question. I am glad BPM is infact generating all these complex xml files behind the screens and taking care of so many things. Thanks to ADF framework. Yes, I totally agree, debugging may be nightmare to begin with. But with divide and rule, you can get over it. End of the Day its just pure Workflow and a complex ADF. ADF can be stripped out carefully and run all the actonis from a normal web application. If we design properly as pure SOA, we create back end services like EJBs that can be consumed from WebServices or ADF Layer. Once we have this we can integrate these Services into any BPM Process.
Re: Integrating BPM taskflows into an ADF application
Now, coming back to your questions:
    1. You have a Complex BPM Process with complex BO (business objects), Arrays of BOs. I hope you have XSD for your BOs and using them only you created BusinesObjects and ProcessDataObjects. Now lets assume you have a BPM Process that uses this complex data structure. Lets take a very first Human Task initiaor who may see a Task Details page with your compelx objects. Lets say, in Task Details page, he says a header section with 10 fields. Another section with a Table of Multiple Rows and columns (arrays of Data), etc etc.
    2. NOW the main question is, when this User Saves or Submits the Task, you should be doing something with that Data ? Am I right. Are you Saving it to any Database or everything is in the Payload itself. If so, I hope you have complex. If its payload itself, then I hope you have a complex strucutre to pass arrays of data through out the process.
    3. Assuming all this gets Stored into backend Database. Lets not worry about retrieving it back when task goes to second user. Always Payload will store the key IDs lke dataId like OrderId, CustomerId etc and using that it can pull any data from backend and show on task details page.
    4. This is where the ADF comes into picture. So even before you integrate your complex backend data with Process, first create a simple WebAppilcation. If you have EJB methods to handle this data, you create Data controls, bindings. Bindings will help generate the Screens. So you can first test your application completely here. Once all this is working, thats when you call these Services from your Process.
And beauty is with new release of BPM Suite (should be in BPM 11.5 + FP (Feature Pack)), they have a concept of Simulation. This should help you to simulate the Process without any real data and JUST focus and test on the Flow of the Process. This comes real handy for testing.
And for the data used in your process, you have ADF Tools to create stand alone ADF Application.
We have some applications like yours with very complex data structure, arrays that gets stored like in 25 tables with references going everywhere. First we built a simple data layer using EJBs and JPA layer (JPA Entities). These Entities have annotated methods to take care of most of the things. In the EJB we exposed some generic methods instead of adf generating them, due to complex data structre. Then we created data controls and bindings. Create Custom JSPX Files. This is where we ended up having our own Layout for the Data. I hope you have already seen by default, task details layout page generated is NOT usabe at all. It generates all the data in one Single Long column. We do not use that. Since we know data, we created our own Task details page. The only thing we add is the Actions bar and comments and attachment section. When you auto generate a taskdetails page for any .TASK file, you will see DataBindins created for Payload, Actions, and also separately for coments and attachmetns. Just drag these comments and attachments on to your page and define your own layout.
Re: deploying a large Oracle BPM Application with multiple UI projects (Single taskdetails for multiple UIs and Tasks)
Re: What exactly 'PAYLOAD' Means??? (Simple definition for Payload word referred in any Process)
If you see one of the old posts, there is a way to reuse just one Single TaskDetals page for Multiple different Human .TASK files. All that matters iis the top Actions Menu that are differenet for each human task like someone can Submit, someone can only Approve or Reject etc. We can club all these Actions into single actionsMenu.jsff and put this on TaskDetails page and assing to all the .task files. Menus are automatically disabled/enabled using workflow APIs. You do not need any special coding for them. Look at code snipet for any actions button that has like isAllowedAction and pass the name of the action. Workflow APIs see if that .TASK file has a Action named with that internally.
In conclusion, there is a decent clear gap between Process and the ADF Generated Task Details page.

  • Master table with two child tables in ADF Framework

    Hi,
I'm trying to implement single master with two detail tables using oracle adf framework of Jdev 11.1.1.4.0. I'm able to do single master-detail by using view link but unable to achieve nested details block i.e., master with nested child blocks.
I created Query based view object of Master and two query based view objects as details. Then I created two view link for master with first child and another view link for master with second child. Even then in my data controls I see as two different components which is incorrect.
Please let me know how to create a data control for an example shown below:
    Fruits [MASTER]
--- Details of Fruits as adf table
    -- Apples [FIRST CHILD]
---- Details of Apples as adf table
    -- Oranges [SECOND CHILD]
---- Details of Oranges as adf table
    Regards,
    Amar.

    You need two viewLinks
    Fruits->Apples
    Fruits->Oranges
Then in the data model you pick the Fruits entry that has:
    Fruits
    |--->Apples
You stand on Fruits and you shuttle the Oranges to be under it from the left.
If you'll use the default HR schema you'll see this type of relation for Employees:

  • Location of database data in ADF framework

    Hi,
I an new to ADF framework. I use JDeveloper 12.1.3.
Here what intrigees me. I understand that when I use read-onlu view object, my data (data I pulled from database) are stored in RowSet and I can access it via the Iterator.
But here is what I don't understand. When I use entity based view, and I pull some data from database, where are they stored? In Instance of EntityObject on which my View is based or somewhere else?
    Many thx

Other way around - VO is always storing the current version of the row, with any changes.  Or a new row that was added.  Or will be missing a row that was deleted.  EO is storing the data needed to make those changes, until a commit or rollback is issued.
Now, I'll betray my ignorance - I'm not sure if EO is storing the original row.  If I'm not mistaken, a rollback forces a re-query, and THAT is how the VO is re-set with the most current data from the database.  But I'm willing for someone to set me straight.

  • About customer form(extends ActionForm) in ADF framework

    1. In addition DataForm outside, ADF framework whether or not define form(extends ActionForm)?
    2. If possible, used the form(extends ActionForm) in jsp page. Why set these data to the view and then these data can not be inserted after application model commit without any exception?

The answer will depend on how you are storing the parameter in your ADF application and when do you actually need it to be set and based on what.
This can be for example a property of a managed bean in your JSF application and you can initialize it either in the bean itself or in the faces-config.xml file as a managed property.

  • How To tell ADF Framework to use my authenticated subject?

    Hi,
let's say that I have a subject instance which is authenticated through Weblogic server. Now I want to use this authenticated subject to protect my resources using ADF Security. So how should I tell this to ADF framework programmaically. For example I can think of storing my principal and roles in some type of objects and store it in session in a format that's understandable by the framework. By understandable I mean ADFContext.getCurrent.getSecurityContext.isUserAuthenticated returns true, getPrincipal returns my authenticated principal. I appreciate your helps.
    Best Regards,
    Salim

    Hi Chris,
I want to implement programmatic authentication. I was able to authenticate given the LoginModule (weblogic.security.auth.login.UsernamePasswordLoginModule), LoginContext (javax.security.auth.login.LoginContext) and a callback handler.
    try {
    loginContext.login();
    Subject subject = loginContext.getSubject();
It authenticates successfully. But he problem is that it does not push authenticated subject into session. My guess is that there should be a way to configure application server to use this subject for the session. I understand that adf security just delegates calls to application server. I thought may be there is a way to do it with adf. Thanks for the reply.

  • How do I change the language of ADF framework error messages?

I'm a beginner in ADF and JDeveloper and I tried to run one of the tutorials for ADF (Build a Web Application with JDeveloper 11g Using EJB, JPA, and JavaServer Faces).
While clicking through the application I got errors like this one:
ADF_FACES-60097:Pentru mai multe informaţii, consultaţi jurnalul de erori al serverului, pt. o intrare care începe cu: ADF_FACES-60096:Excepţie server în cursul PPR, nr. 1
My question is how do I set the JDeveloper/WebLogic to show these messages in English (in order to have better chances while searching this forum :) )?
I'm not talking about messages that I define in my application, but about framework error messages.
I already set USER_LANGUAGE=en in <JDEV_HOME>\.product.properties, but no luck.
Note that WebLogic server messages are in English (e.g. <Warning> <J2EE> <BEA-160195> <The application version lifecycle event listener oracle.security.jps.wls.listeners.JpsAppVersionLifecycleListener is ignored because the application HR_EJB_JPA_App is not versioned.>), only ADF messages are presented in Romanian.
    Thanks,
    Bogdan

I suspect that these messages are considered "system" ones (e.g. not for the user), so they are not generated in the user's locale but in the JVM's default locale. On Windows machines default JVM locale is taken from Windows Regional Settings. If you do not want to change your Regional Settings, you can try Java system properties "user.language" and "user.country". Try to add the following line to WebLogic domain's <tt>setDomainEnv.cmd</tt> script:
set JAVA_OPTIONS=%JAVA_OPTIONS% -Duser.language=en -Duser.country=USA restrart of the server is required.
In Bulgaria we do not have such problems because ADF Faces messages do not have Bulgarian translation, so they are generated in English regardless of the fact that our Regional Settings are set to Bulgarian.

  • ADF Mobile runtime architecture

In the developers guide is a note on page 1-4 saying that "ADF Model includes the local database".
This is not only confusing in my opinion, but also wrong. The model should be indicated as the interface (or glue) between the UI and Business Logic.
Page 1-6 contains a better definition of what the model is supposed to be.

Hi, Luc, good point. This is a poor explanation of the ADF Mobile architecture. It should say "ADF Model provides ability to connect to a local database." or something similar. The local database is accessible only by the application that creates it, so it could be considered to be part of the application. However, I agree that local DB should not be considered as part of the ADF Model. I have raised Doc Bug 14137760 for this issue.

  • Overridding ADF Framework labels

I have a requirement to put custom (multi language) labels on the ADF components .. i.e for adf:column I need to change sort ascending, sort descending, etc.
I have identified a class called RichBundle.java that has a method called getContents() that serves labels to the ADF Components. I have successfully got this working HOWEVER .. the getContents() method is called ONLY ONCE per server instance. Therefore the first user sets the bundle properties for everyone.
    What's my solution?
    Howie

I guess this is the answer ...
"ADF Faces components may include text that is part of the component, for example the af:table component uses the resource string af_table.LABEL_FETCHING for the message text that is displayed in the browser while the table is fetching data during the initial load of data or while the table is being scrolled. JDeveloper provides automatic translation of these text resources into 28 languages. These text resources are referenced in a resource bundle. If you set the browser to use the language in Italy, any text contained within the components will automatically be displayed in Italian."

  • Any way in ADF framework to find my jspx?

    Hello:
Is there a method in the framework that would return me an answer to "what jspx am I in?" When I am running a jspx, I need to my identity within the jspx and also need information about my current app?
    Thanks

    Hi,
the question is where exactly you need this information. Note that in JSF the current page is the viewId
    #{facesContext.viewRoot.viewId}

  • License of data controls, data bindings without the ADF framework

I am just wondering. If i create a Java EE web application in Jdeveloper and use datacontrols and data bindings for my JSF pages. I don't use the ADF rich faces but the basic JSF components. Does that require a license for ADF? Can that be easily deployed on a tomcat server?
As far as i understand are the bindings and data controls part of JSF 227 which is created by oracle. If i want to use it outside of oracle products, do i need to create my own implementation of that standard or how does it work? If i use Jdeveloper, i can easily create datacontrols and use the drag & drop method to create JSF tables and so on. But does that require a license for ADF or can i use it for free?
Just to be sure... I am not using ADF BC but i am using hibernate as data access layer. From their i create a class that i convert to data control.

The section Licensing of the JDeveloper FAQ page ( says:
Q: How do I know if I need a TopLink and ADF runtime license?A: You will need to be licensed for a production deployment of ADF if you are using any of the following features:
    Oracle TopLink
ADF Controller / ADF Task Flows
    ADF Business Components
    ADF Model layer databinding
    ADF Faces Component
    ADF Swing
    ADF UIX User interface components
ADF Actions / Datapages for Struts>
DataControls and ADF Bindings are part of the ADF Model layer databinding, so they require runtime licenses if not used on Oracle WebLogic Server or Oracle iAS.http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/jdev/jdeveloper11gfaq-085697.html#L0<a/> says:

  • Trying to do an Insert but ADF framework is tryng to do Update

I have JSF create screen where the user wants to either fill out all the fields on the page and then save them, or select a record from a select list and have all the fields from the selected record copied into the create screens fields.
When the user types everything in and hits save everything works great. When the selects from the list and hits save I get:
JBO-25019: Entity row of key oracle.jbo.Key[EEE ] not found in CodeCreateV error.
The appIication seems to think its doing an update instead of a create.
I saw these two differences in the Server log before the error occurs:
    Doing a Create:
    OracleSQLBuilder: SAVEPOINT 'BO_SP'
OracleSQLBuilder Executing, Lock 1 DML on: CODE_CREATE_V (Insert)
    Doing a CopyAs:
    OracleSQLBuilder: SAVEPOINT 'BO_SP'
OracleSQLBuilder Executing Select on: CODE_CREATE_V (false)
Also in the server log I see:
    DCBindingContainer.reportException :oracle.jbo.RowAlreadyDeletedException
Does anyone know how to put it into Create mode? Or is there another problem that I'm not seeing.

In itunes whenitunes store is selected go to th window to the right and scroll all the way down.  You should see a flag logo in the very bottom right hand corner.  Click on it and choose the country you want
