Administrator Account and Networking

After reading some safety articles, I setup seperate administrator accounts on my PowerBook and Mini. I have an external drive attached to the Mini and since I've setup the admin accounts, I've been unable to connect to the partitions on that drive. They don't show up when I login to the Mini via Network in the finder. I checked permissions and those aren't a problem. Anybody know what to do?
Also, I'm getting frustrated with updating software. How, from my standard account, do I update software that I click through from programs to download? For example, I was alerted to an update from Vienna, clicked, the updated downloaded to my desktop, but I cannot install it from my standard account and it doesn't show up in my admin account.
Is having duel accounts worth these headaches? (I'm beginning to think that a rare virus might be less annoying! )

Separate administrator accounts for your computers tends to be overkill unless you are sharing the computers with others. Mac OS is intended to be run as admin. There seems to be quite a bit of mass hysteria out there, and, as you see, it causes you some inconvenience.
Just use a good password and keep it secret.
Running as admin is nothing like running as "Root".

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:

    Where did you install Office?
If you installed it to the Applications folder in the admin account that ie reason why only you can access it.
If you want everyone to be able to access it then you should install it in the Applications folder at root level.

  • Administrator account and password problem

I just got a new Macbook for Christmas I have been trying to install LimeWire onto my laptop and every time the Installer asks me to type in my administrator name and password. I've been putting in the username I used to set up my computer but its not working. Since I am the only person using this computer doesn't it make me the administrator? I have already tried putting in the Mac OS X Install disk and reseting the password for my account. I even went to System Preferences--Accounts and changes my password there but nothing has worked. *What am I doing wrong?* Do I need to set myself as an administrator manually? This is so frustrating ><

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I've been putting in the username I used to set up my computer but its not working.
If your user is already an Administrator user, the user name should be input into the dialog box by default. You should not need to type your name in. Look inside the Accounts System Preferences. Is your user listed as a "Standard" user? Or an "Admin"? If it's "Standard", then you've encountered on of Mac OS X 10.5's bugs. For some reason, some users don't keep their Administrator status. You can follow the instructions in this article to manually set your status to Administrator:

  • Administrator account AND user account neccesary?

I recently read in some posts that you should have an administrator account setup up on your mac but then also have a user account for yourself to use. Can anyone better explain this to me and tell me why I should do this? Right now I am the only one using the computer and there is only one account set up and it is the admin account.
    Thanks

Depending on how often you take your pB on the road determines it for me.
Portables are more likely to be stolen than desktops, and if there is sensitive info on it, ssn's for example, I prefer to have that protected or hidden in an upper level account.
That way, if you use a second account for normal, mundane stuff, if it is heisted, the crooks would not have access to top secret stuff.

It keeps asking for an administrator account. It needs a password as well! It won't let me go beyond that screen and if I press cancel it will shut the computer. I cannot access my home screen!

Try entering a wrong password- or simply leaving it blank- and tap Enter key. After 3 times it should give you a disabled code. Post the code.

  • Mixing mobile account and network account.

Is it possible to have mobile account on some computers and network account on others and having the same user logging in (only one login at a time) without sync issues ?
I have tested it with account preferences set on computers and it is working nice until I have been logged in on a computer with networked account, then I experience sync issues. Every time I log in mobile account I got a dialog window asking me to select "Sync Later" , "Mobile" or "Networked". It does not matter what I select, the dialog comes back everytime I log off and on with the mobile account. I have only managed get rid of it by deleting mobile account and sync it again.

Again, thanks for taking your time explaining this for me.
After been reading the User Management documentation from apple about Managing Portable Computers (Chapter 8), I got the opposite impression about running Mobile Account on multiple computers. From this text, as I read it, it is a common thing to do, as long as we are aware of sync issues that might occur and know how we shall deal with it.
So I'm a little confused about this topics, as it seem to make sense what you are saying, but the documentation says something different.
I have tried setting sync preferences on the user instead, so that every login is made with a mobile account on every computer. That seems to work ok. Off course sync issues may arise, but here the the file sync can be fixed through the dialogs windows that pops up. Unlike under the mix of network logins and mobile account logins where it doesn't matter which location I set to be the place containing the most recent files. This only occurs after a network account login. If I have been logged on another computer set up with mobile account everything syncs nicely. I think
So for now, I think I will stick with setting up users with mobile account preferences and skip the networked account.
Does this make any sense or am I still mistaking here?
Ok, thanks for all you help.

  • Administration Account and Domains

    Hello gents,
i'm in a situation where we need to install BPC 7 in a production environment which is not in the same domain where the users are. The servers are in a LAN with its own domain (i.e. DomainProd) and I can ask both domain accounts and, of couse, machine accounts to get access to them. The users are in a separate domain (i.e. domainUsers).
I read somewhere in this forum  that it is better that the accounts I need to use during the installation process be domain accounts. I believe that, in a situatione like this one, this doesn't apply. What are the drawbacks of using local machine accounts?
    cheers
    elio

I agree with both Raman and Sebastien.
If BPC is installed using local account then it will not be able to authenticate to the domains, making it impossible to use domain users. So using domain accounts for the installation is required in this case.
I would add that the BPC sysadmin domain account (used for installation) should be added explicitely to the local administrator group on the web/app server.
That account needs to be able to browse the user domain, which sould have a trust relationship to the server domain.
after that it should just be a matter of defining the proper group in server manager

  • Difference between ACS Administrator account and ACS user account?

Does an ACS administrator by default have full rights to every device it manages?
I thought ACS administator accounts and user accounts were different.
I have an acs admin account called admin_1. then i created another user account called admin_1 (for switch/router access)
when i set the password for admin_1(user accounts), when i tried to login into the switch it wouldn't take. It would only take the password set for the ACS admin account.
    Is this by design?

My understanding was that this is not the case, Ive just tested my installation again to make double sure and the user accounts and the admin accounts are clearly seperated
The RADIUS server does not make use of the Admin user database.

  • Late 2010 iMac running 10.9.2 started waking up to the main login prompt screen after coming out of what should be `sleep'. I then have to relog in to my account and network drives have to become reconnected.

This has started quite recently and it appears as if there is no difference if either I have instigated `sleep' (option + cmd + eject keys) or if sleep has started after its time-out period. I then have to wait for my 2 network attached drives to reconnect! It's as if a restart has occured. I've reset the PRAM and done a verify disk (SSD) and repaired permissions but to no avail. Any help/suggestions even cures much appreciated. Thanks.

  • Sharing an iTunes Library across multiple user account and a network.

Sharing an iTunes Music Library across multiple user accounts.
    Hello Everybody!
Firstly, this was designed to be run in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. It will not work with earlier versions of Mac OS X! Sorry.
Here's a handy tip for keeping your hard drive neat and tidy, it also saves space, what in effect will be done is an iTunes music library will be shared amongst multiple users on the same machine. There are advantages and disadvantages to using this method.
    • Firstly I think it might be worthwhile to state the advantages and disadvantages to using this approach.
    The advantages include:
    - Space will be saved, as no duplicate files will occur.
    - The administrator will be able to have complete control over the content of the iTunes library, this may be useful for restricting the content of the Library; particularly for example if computer is being used at and education institution, business or any other sort of institution where things such as explicit content would be less favorable.
    - The machine will not be slowed by the fact that every user has lots of files.
The disadvantages to this system include.
    - The fact that the account storing the music will have to be logged in, and iTunes will have to be active in that account.
    - If the account housing the music is not active then nobody can use the iTunes library.
    - There is a certain degree of risk present when an administrator account must be continually active.
    - Fast User Switching must be enabled.
    Overview:
A central account controls all music on the machine/network, this is achieved by storing iTunes files in a public location as opposed to in the user's directory. In effect the system will give all users across the machine/network access to the same music/files without the possibility of files 'doubling up' because two different users like the same types of music. This approach saves valuable disk space in this regard and may therefore prove to be useful in some situations.
This is a hearty process to undertake, so only follow this tutorial if you're willing to go all the way to the end of it.
    Process:
    Step 1:
Firstly, we need to organize the host library, I tidied mine up, removing excess playlists, random files, things like that. this will make thing a bit easier in the later stages of this process.
Once the library is tidied up, move the entire "iTunes" folder from your Home directory to the "//localhost" directory (The Macintosh HD) and ensure that files are on the same level as the "Applications", "Users", "Library" and "System" directories; this will ensure that the files in the library are available to all users on the machine (this also works for networks)
Optionally you can set the ownership of the folder to the 'administrator' account (the user who will be hosting the library.), you may also like to set the permissions of 'you can' to "Read & Write" (assuming that you are doing this through the user who will host the library); secondly you should set the "Owner" to the administrator who will be hosting the library and set their "access" to "Read & Write" (this will ensure that the administrator has full access to the folder). The final part of this step involves setting access for the "Others" tab to "Read Only" this will ensure that the other users can view but not modify the contents on the folder.
    Overview:
So far we have done the following steps:
    1. Organized the host library.
    2. Placed the iTunes directory into a 'public' directory so that other users may use it. (this step is essential if you plan on sharing the library across multiple accounts on the same machine. NOTE: this step is only necessary if you are wanting to share you library across multiple accounts on the same machine, if you simply want to share the music across a network, use the iTunes sharing facility.
    3. set ownership and permissions for the iTunes music folder.
    Step 2:
Currently the administrator is the only user who can use this library, however we will address this soon. In this step we will enable iTunes music sharing in the administrator's account, this will enable other users to access the files in the library.
If you are not logged in as the administrator, do so; secondly, open iTunes and select "Preferences" from the "iTunes" menu, now click the "Sharing" tab, if "share my library on my local network" is not checked, the radio buttons below this will now become active, you may choose to share the entire libraries contents, or share only selected content.
Sharing only selected content may be useful if their is explicit content in the library and minors use the network or machine that the library is connected to.
If you have selected "share entire library" go to Step 3, if you have selected share "share selected playlists" read on.
After clicking "share selected playlists" you must then select the playlists that you intend to share across your accounts and network. Once you have finished selecting the playlists, click "OK" to save the settings.
    Overview:
    In this step we:
    1. Enabled iTunes sharing in the administrator's account, now, users on the local network may access the iTunes library, however, users on the same machine may not.
    Step 3:
Now we will enable users on the same machine to access the library on the machine. This is achieved by logging in as each user, opening iTunes, opening iTunes preferences, and clicking "look for shared music". now all users on the machine may also access the library that the administrator controls.
This in effect will mean that the user will not need to use their user library, it will be provided to them via a pseudo network connection.
As a secondary measure, I have chosen to write a generic login script that will move any content from the user's "Music/iTunes/iTunes Music" directory to the trash and then empties the user's trash.
This is done through the use of an Automator Application: this application does the following actions.
    1. Uses the "Finder" action "Get Specified Finder Items"
    1a. The user's "~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music" folder
    2. Uses the "Finder" action "Get Folder Contents"
    3. Uses the "Finder" action "Move to Trash"
    4. Uses the "Automator" action "Run AppleScript"
    4a. with the following:
    on run {input, parameters}
    tell application "Finder"
    empty trash
    end tell
    return input
    end run
IMPORTANT: Once the script is adapted to the user account it must be set as a login item. in order to keep the script out of the way i have placed it in the user's "Library" directory, in "Application Support" under "iTunes".
    Overview:
    Here we:
    1. Enabled iTunes sharing in the user accounts on the host machine, in effect allowing all users of the machine to view a single iTunes library.
    2. (Optional) I have created a login application that will remove any content that has been added to user iTunes libraries, this in effect stops other users of the machine from adding music and files to iTunes.
    Step 4:
If it is not already enabled, open system preferences and enable Fast User Switching in Accounts Options.
    Summary:
We have shared a single iTunes library across multiple user account, while still allowing for network sharing. This method is designed to save space on machines, particularly those with smaller hard drives.
I hope that this hint proves to be helpful and I hope everybody will give me feedback on my process.
    regards,
    Pete.

  • Administrators group and Administrator account

I'm setting up an Open Directory network and had some questions regarding the Administrator account and the Administrators Group:
    1. How do you add members to the Administrators group and how do you see who is a member?
    2. Do members of this group have full access to computers that are members of the domain (i.e., computer accounts listed in Server Admin). I've tried logging in as the Administrator on laptops that were joined to the OD domain, but I was not successful. I'm coming from an Active Directory background and the administrator can log into all domain computers. Logging into the OS X server as the administrator works.
    Thanks!

    Hi z-admin,
Have you ever gotten the answer to this?
My question is similar: if a user in OD is given FULL administration capabilities in OD, is he a "Mac domain administrator"? If not, how can I make my user a "Mac domain administrator", e.g. a person that can log into any Mac connected to my OD and be an administrator on that machine? Otherwise, I need to create a local admin on every Mac and this is a nightmare for any network administrator.
    Thanks!
