Recently shifted from RAW+XMP combination (when it was easy just to kill XMP) to DNG format in CS3. Unfortunately discovered that crop or retouch actions under ACR4.1 with DNG files are NON REVERSIBLE. Lost several nice shoots :( Be careful!

NOTHING is "ruined" about your DNG files. You just have no idea how to use the Camera Raw user interface. If you calm down, and ask questions rather than "warning" others (using three exclamation points) about how Adobe is lying to the world, you would make a lot more progress (rather than just making a complete fool of yourself).
1. To remove a crop, click and hold the mouse button down on the crop tool icon. A menu will appear. Pick the "Clear Crop" item from this menu.
2. To remove retouch spots, select the retouch tool. A tool options bar will appear at the top of the image. Press the "Clear All" button.
If you have manually been deleting sidecar XMP files, you have been wasting a huge amount of time. There is absolutely no reason to do this just to clear crops and retouch spots.
Warning to others: When creating a new topic, be really careful to be accurate in your statements. If you are not absolutely sure of something, it is much safer to ask a question. There are no stupid questions--just stupid statements.

Font licensing and EULA: Adobe Type Basics OpenType Edition

Hi all,
I'm not necesarilly working with graphic design daily. However, I may have to replicate a design for a publication that uses Adobe Garamond Pro, which is why I got interested in Adobe - Fonts : Adobe Type Basics OpenType Edition.
However, before I shell out the cash, I'd like to ask a few questions about related EULA's and font licensing issues - as the last thing I want to do is buy something, and then end up sued/financially destroyed/imprisoned anyways. (which is why I prefer with open fonts & software - at least no worries about prison, in case of misunderstanding the legalese)
So, here are the questions:
I am a Linux user, and I primarily intent to use the fonts with xelatex. On the download page, there are two options: "Win" and "Mac". Which one should I choose? Related question: Adobe Forums: Install a Mac font on a PC:Windows can use OpenType, Windows Type1 and Windows TrueType fonts. Windows cannot directly read Mac TrueType or Mac Type1 fonts.
Macintosh can use OpenType, Mac Type1, Mac TrueType, and Win TrueType. Adobe products can read some Windows Type 1 fonts if installed in the correct folder.
Versions - possibly unrelated, but I've found this old comment from 2003 for 'Adobe Type Basics 5.0 Mlp (CD-ROM)':Unfortunately, this product includes fonts in the older PostScript "Type 1" font format instead of the newer OpenType format. Adobe sells an OpenType edition of Adobe Type Basics, but this is a download-only product. Yes, the Adobe Type Basics Open Type Edition would provide you with OpenType versions of the fonts. Sorry that we don’t offer all the different fonts, font families and variations on CD-ROM, but it would be cost-prohibitive to make all those versions, and font software is relatively small compared to application software. That said, Our font EULA (End User License Agreement) which can be found at: http://www.adobe.com/type/browser/legal/pdfs/wf_EULA071111/EULA5seat_USEnglish07.11.11.htm l states: “2.5 Backup Copy. You may make a reasonable number of backup copies of the Software, provided your backup copies are not installed or used for other than archival purposes.” So you can make your own CD-ROM.

The file format is OpenType (CFF). I would recommend making a backup copy of these fonts if you don’t want to keep them on your system. Our Electronic Software Download service is not meant to be used for storage.

Wow! Lots of questions here. First of all, publishers publish. Printing is just one form of publishing. Embedding information for Adobe fonts can be found at the following:

If you send a file to a print service provider and send a copy of the font along as well, then the printer needs to own a valid copy themselves. If you send the print service provider a PDF version of the file, then you can embed the font in the PDF (but you would not send the a raw version of the font). In this case, the printer doesn’t need the font, because it is embedded in the document.

If you buy a license for Adobe Garamond Pro, you have up to 5 seats. So, it can be installed on a maximum of five computers at your company. It is that simple to be in compliance. If you were to obtain Adobe Garamond Pro by purchasing Adobe Type Basics OpenType Edition, then you can install the entire set on up to five computers at your company. You are licensing the set, and the fonts cannot be split up and used across multiple users at your company.

Yes. It is legal to send the document to a print service provider with the font embedded in PDF. You are printing a document, and your interpretation of what it means to “publish” or be a “publisher” is not relevant. The words don’t even appear in our EULA.

Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro - editing font properties in a text box

When I insert a text box on an existing PDF, initially Acrobat usually allows me to edit the font properties. Sometimes it does not. Once I type in the text box, the font properties toolbar becomes locked (i.e., "grayed out") so I can't change font type, size, color justification and other font properties. If I save the file, close it and then re-open I can edit then the font, at least for a while. If I have other PDF files open too I usually have to close those other windows. After some time the font properties again become locked.
Obviously it is incredibly inconvenient to have to close a program and all open files then re-open those files just to change something like the color of a font. I called Adobe tech support and they told me the fix was to buy Acrobat X. I don't want to spend more money, I just want the product I already paid for to work properly.
Is there a way for this bug in the software to be corrected?

I don't know if this applies to you but I had a similar problem with documents on our network.
It turns out the documents were being saved as PDF/A or PDF/X format.
I had the users open up Adobe. Go to Edit>Preferences Then go to the Documents section and find the "Open in PDF/A" section. I had them select "Never" and then the toolbars were no longer greyed out.

How to transfer metadata (tags etc) from Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.2 to A P Elements 8

I have just bought the Adobe Elements 8. I was told that this product was the upgrade product from the trial version of Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.2. Can't find a clear solution in this forum of how to transfer the metadata to the Adobe Elements 8 and continue the indexing with the latest product. Hopefully somebody can help.

If you still have your 3.2 psa catalog in your "My Catalogs" folder, try
downloading PSE5 from here:

PSE5 should be able to find your catalog and you can convert it into PSE5.
If that doesn't work, it may be because you weren't able to run "reconnect
all missing files" in PSA3.2 before attempting the conversion. If all your
photos were still connected, this should work. Then you can open PSE8 and
convert PSE5 into PSE8. Do a "reconnect all missing files" in PSE5 before
you do the conversion. Even though all my files were connected when I
converted PSA2 into PSE5, PSE5 had about 30 unconnected photos.

Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition vs. Picasa?

Hi everyone..
I have just installed Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.0 and I'm wondering about a few things. Bear with me here...
1. I use Piccasa strictly as a picture-viewer program. I'm not 100% happy with it, could anybody pursuade me and my curious friend, why I should switch to Album Starter? I would like that.
2. What I DO like about Piccasa is that it just view my pictures and do not copy them into a special piccasa-format. I have several file-formats in my picture-folder and I would like Album Starter to view all of them without changing the original location of the file, nor copy it, taking up a lot of disk-space.
3. Another thing I like about Picasa is that if I have changed, added or removed a picture in the original file-location it updates those changes when I launch the program.
4. I understand that there are several ways to view your photos. But can you also view and navigate your pictures through folders while you are in Album Starter? Because thats one thing I hate about Picasa, it just place all my folders on the side of the page, meaning it takes them out of their original folder and destroys the dept-folder-system I have made.
5. Does Album Starter have a nice search function?
If anyone could take the time to answer these very bad formulated questions, I would be very grateful.

1) PSA SE has better organizing tools [tags/collections] than Picassa. There is also a clear growth path if you want something more powerful [Photoshop Elements Organizer is compatible].
2) With PSA SE you keep your image files anywhere you want.
3) PSA SE has limitations in this area. You are encouraged to move files about from within the program.
4) I'm not sure that you'd prefer PSA SE in this respect. You are really encouraged not to think in terms of folders, as that is not a way to organize a large collection of images [say much more than 100].
5) It has various ways to search - what are you after? Using tagging intelligently means you very rarely need to search. [I have use this technology for 3 years and only used Search a handful of time.]

It is a common misconception that Starter Edition 'stores', or copies, your files into it. But the program does not move or copy files at all, rather it scans your system's My Pictures directory, and generates miniature versions of your pictures (called thumbnails) so that you can browse a 'flat' list of thumbnails of your photos, overcoming the inconvenience of having to go into separate folders in Windows Explorer to have to find files.The thumbnails, as well as any tags, and Albums that you create in Starter Edition are all stored in the Photoshop Album catalog file, separate from your pictures, and your pictures remain where you originally copied them to your computer.
If you use Photoshop Album to subsequently download files from a digital camera or scanner, the default location where the program will create those files would be in the My Pictures>Digital Camera Photos folder. But if you do NOT use Photoshop Album Starter edition to download files from your camera, then you will find that folder empty.
The thumbnails in the Starter Edition catalog will exist, even if you decide to move or delete the original photos that were added to the program. This will cause files in the Photoshop Album catalog to become 'disconnected' from the original photos. To reconnect the files, you can use the File>Reconnect Missing files command to see if the program can locate the original files in a new location, and once again re-link the catalog thumbnails to the files they once referenced.
Since Photoshop Album has been discontinued, I recommend that folks find an alternative solution. One alternative that will preserve most of what you've created in Starter Edition is the Photoshop Elements 8 trial. Install that, and it will automatically convert the Photoshop Album catalog to a current format, and the program will not time out, as Starter Edition did. If you want to purchase more Editing power, you can also choose to purchase the full program, but it's not required.
If you are like many who have come to this forum wondering how you can get to your photos, now that the program has become locked or expired, don't worry; your photos have never been moved by Photoshop Album; they remain wherever you intially put them, on your hard drive. To get to them, you can navigate your file system using Windows Explorer. They are typically in your My Documents>My Pictures folder. Acrobat XI is not distributed with Designer. Designer is now a separate product. You can create forms in Acrobat as an AcroForm or using Forms Central (an online forms program). You can print the form to a new PDF and then recreate the fields in Acrobat using the recognize form fields. You will likely have to fix the form fields, but that would be the process. Generally, once a form is taken to Designer, you can't bring it back without such steps.
Designer is available with AA8 - AAX, but since is a separate product as I indicated.

To elaborate on what Sukrit posted, it is likely that the form is not an Acrobat forum but a Designer form or was set for distribution and is locked for editing. I suspect it was probably created in Designer and thus can only be completed in Acrobat or Reader since the PDF is really container for and XML structure and does not have the basics of a PDF document. If that is the case, you either need Designer or you can print to a new PDF and use the field recognition feature of Acrobat to recreate the form. Of course, the latter will require some editing to the form fields in most cases.

Adobe Photoshop Starter Album Edition 3.0 unlock code

Can someone please advise how to get an unlock code? I received the software with a camera I purchased. I completed the registration form that opens with the software (numerous times). I click submit, it sends the registration, tells me I will receive an email with the code, and an email never comes. I have checked the junk folder.

When setting pref for email client within Adobe PSE, AOL is not listed as an email option. I have reinstalled Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.2, and unlocked, reinstalled AOL 10 (desktop) and reset it as the default email client. The default is working, as mailto: links in browsers open up AOL Desktop, and the email app listed at the top of the <START> button is AOL. How can I set it as an email client in Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.2? Is there some registry hack? Interference with another app?

Re 3.2 Photoshop. After I had some repair done to my computer, the photos in my album have the restricted little red square at the bottom of each photo. When I try to open the photo to fix or print a message box comes on that nothing can be done because of overide problem. In fact it closes the photoshop immediately because of this error.
