Adobe PDF Printer in InDesign Shrinking Everything, please help!!!

I'm a constant basic InDesign user, and I've just started running into a particular problem that I think might be caused by a setting I've enabled or something.
Problem: If I "print" anything to Adobe PDF 8.0, everything ends up approximately 25% the original size. Under the "Setup" for the printer dialog, I can choose any paper size and it still happens, and I've got Scale set to 100% and "Constrain Proportions" checked (both these under Print->Setup->Options.
Confusion: I can use the File->Adobe PDF Presets and everything looks perfect. Normal size, all's well. I just can't use the Print function and then select Adobe PDF 8.0
To make matters critical, I am both Tiling jobs and using the "Print Booklet" function, and both need to be sent to the Adobe PDF 8.0 printer as I'm then sending the resultant pdfs off for printing.
Any ideas? Under what circumstances would the regular PDF export work fine but the Adobe PDF 8.0 printer-produced pdf be shrunk?
If you haven't any ideas, can you suggest a few ways to gently trash the printer or preferences to see if that is the issue?
Best wishes,
Matthew

25% in print or on-screen, approximately.
In this instance, I'm making covers and back pages for musical scores, and I need to impose them so they can be printed in booklet form on 11 x 17 paper and then bound.
I did the same thing last spring without incident. Even earlier this fall. Also, it should be noted that the Adobe PDF 8.0 printer works as advertised everywhere except for InDesign.
I'm willing to provide more info. upon request. Also, here's two examples of the same file in InDesign. One is exported as PDF, the other is "printed" to the Adobe PDF 8.0 printer (and shrunk, as you'll see):
http://tebo.no-ip.info/IND/
Why not export? As I mentioned, I don't seem to be able to create booklets (order the pages from an 8.5 x 11 document for printing on 11 x 17 paper) or tile (fragment a large document or image for printing on multiple smaller pages) without going through the Adobe PDF 8.0 printer. In addition, I feel like this should be in good working order as it has been for several years (I know that a month ago I successfully tiled a document).

  • Print with Adobe PDF printer driver from Word: Stripes in images

    Hello,
I use Acrobat 8 Professional (Version 8.1.3) on Windows XP SP3 (german version). I'd like to create a PDF out of a Word document by printing with the "Adobe PDF" printer driver. I have a problem with an image containing large unicolored areas: In the PDF there are recognizeable stripes in the colors of the image. This is when viewing the PDF with Acrobat 8 Professiona, when importing a page containung such an image into Photoshop, and when printing such an image.
The image is an RGB TIF, but I tried it with a CMYK TIF as well as with an RGB BMP. The reault - when printed out of Word - is the same. If I print the same image to a PDF from InDesign, then everything is fine, no stripes.
Does anybody know how to optimize this?
    Best regards,
    Christian

Sorry, I should have mentioned this, of course. Well the document is a DOC (because it was prepared by co-workers with Word 2003). I use Word 2007, when I opened the DOC Word switched to "compatability mode" (not sure about the exact English term, I work with German versions). But even when saving the document under a new name, I kept it as a DOC, so my co-workers would be able to open it again at their computers with Word 2003.
My Acrobat is already version 8.1.6 and because I always install Windows Updates that the automatic update service offers, I guess my Word 2007 is also up to date.
But sure, if I can be of any other help, let me know...
    Best regards,

  • How do I deal with "Acces Denied" error when trying to print to Adobe PDF printer driver

Windows 7 64 bit OS (updated)
    Adobe Acrobat XI (11.0.06.70)
I am unable to create a PDF file from within the Windows 7 print dialog.  Each time, I receive a terse "Access Denied" error followed by the display below (the progress bar never advances).  I thought upgrading to Adobe Acrobat XI might fix this but no such luck.  It seems that others have experienced similar issues.  I noticed in the display below that Adobe is trying to create the file in a folder which does not exist (at least I can't see it even after setting my preferences to display hidden files).  I have the hope that, if the folder were present and accessible, Adobe would create the file without trouble.  Is there a way to instruct Adobe Acrobat XI to create this temporary file in a different location?  One of my frustrations is that I used to be able to print Adobe Acrobat files without trouble on the same computer.  I wonder whether the use of a registry cleaner may have contributed to my problem.
What are the best practices for addressing the Access Denied and inability to print problems I've encountered?
Thanks for any help you can provide in sorting out this problem.
    Best,
    Matt

I have been having the exact same problem with Adobe Acrobat X.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled numerous times and applied all the latest updates.  Every time I try to print ANTHING to the Adobe PDF print driver, the software hangs (MS Office, webpage, or other programs).  When I finally kill the process using Task Manager, I find the little "Access Denied" box.  This has been happening for nearly one year.  I have limped along since I have other computers to use.   I have attempted to find answers on this forum in the past, and no one seems to have a clear answer to the problem.
I, too, was tempted to upgrade to XI, but Matt's post settled the matter, since it did not help him.
I am using Win 7 Home (64 bit) and until this issue started, I have had no problem with AA X.
Where are the Adobe experts when you need them?  Please help us.

  • Avoiding the 'Save PDF File As' dialog when printing to the adobe PDF printer from a service

    Hello, can someone please help.
I have Adobe Acrobat 8 Pro installed.
I have an in house application which (among many other things) effectively monitors a directory and prints the file to the default printer. It works fine when run as an application.
I have set the defaults on the Adobe PDF printer to put the output PDF file into a directory and not to open it so it works silently without prompts.
When I run my application as a service, it brings up the 'Save PDF File As' dialog and I would like to avoid this. My impression is that if I put the right registry key in then it will work.
I do not want to do any scripting if I can avoid it.
Thanks for all constructive help given.

Thank for your help Bill, but changing settings in the distiller did not seem to work. As my application prints directly to the default application without using anything specific to Acrobat, I was hoping there was a simple way forward. A colleague suggested copying registry entries from the account I logged on as to the S-1-5-18 entry, then rebooting. This had no effect as the prompt still comes up.
Aandi, I don't have the Acrobat SDK or any experience of it.
Also I'm not sure where any code/script would sit since the application is stable and so I would rather not change it.
If it amounts to a few lines of javascript sitting outside the application then that would be of interest.

  • Adobe PDF Printer not working in Illustrator since 9.3.2 update.

    Greetings all,
Since updating Acrobat Pro to 9.3.2 I've not been able to print to PDF from Illustrator using the Adobe PDF Printer (Adobe PDF 9.0 in my printer list).
I've tried several restarts and have also removed the printer and run the Repair Acrobat Installation from the Help menu of Acrobat to reinstall the printer, but problem remains.
I've also tried printing from other programs (namely Thunderbird, Firefox and Photoshop) and the printer has worked fine so I suspect this my be isolated to Illustrator.
No error messages are given and the Illustrator print jobs are listed as Completed in the printer job list but no files are created.
I've got a work-around, printing to Postscript file then converting to PDF in Distiller and it seems to be working fine, but not my ideal solution.
I've checked for updates in Illustrator but none are available.
    System details:
    OS X 10.5.8 (MacBook Pro 15", around 2.5yrs old)
Adobe Creative Suite CS 3, Acrobat Pro 9.3.2, Illustrator 13.0.2
    Any ideas?
    Many thanks,
    Dave

I've never liked the Save As PDF option in Illustrator. Though the quality is excellent, in my experience it creates bloated PDFs that are often too big to email.
Take for example the file that prompted my original post. If I print to PDF (or in this case use my workaround, creating a PS file, then converting to PDF in Distiller) using my Hi Rez preset, the final PDF is 648K. If I Save As PDF using the same preset, the final file is 5.5Mb! A ridiculous size for a CMYK flyer measuring just 134x70mm.
The reason for the size increase is obvious when the big pdf is opened in Illustrator: all the bits and pieces outside the artboard and on hidden layers are all preserved. In reality, it's just the same as the original Illustrator file seeing as Illustrator's native AI format is pretty much a pdf in all but name only.
Do you know of a way to use the Save As PDF command that eliminates the unwanted material and gets the file size down? That would really make my day!
What I wish for is an Export To PDF command as found in InDesign. That seems to give the best of both worlds.

I have been using X Pro for 2 months following installation of CS5.5 Premium. I used to be able to print-to-file using the Adobe PDF printer in the print dialog box from within apps such as Word and Finale. Suddenly that option is absent from my print dialog box in all apps.

    Hi Bill,
I'm SO glad I tried your HELP suggestion first because un- and re-installing was going to be my next step and I dreaded it, and now, given the info you provide below, it appears it was a good thing I didn't do it. Thanks for the further information. I keep a log to refer to when gremlins like this pop up and this is going into it ASAP!!!

Great. We often hear of folks having uninstalled and reinstalled and problems not going away. The repair is the first line of defense if you have not been able to track down a problem. The last line is a reinstall. One of the problems with reinstalls is that folks do not clean up the system before the install. That clean up should include removal of all latent folder parts left by Acrobat and also running a registry cleaner (MS used to have one, but it is not longer available -- making CCleaner the typical cleanup). So if you have problems in the future, try to trouble shoot it and come to the forum if you need help. Sometimes, the repair is a quick fix, and lastly with no other answers do the reinstall--BUT with the cleanup along the way. Again, glad it worked for you.

  • Acrobat X Pro v10.1.9: Cannot print to Adobe PDF Printer (access is denied)

    Hello.
Suddenly I was not able to print Office 2013 files / Autocad files / Internet Explorer pages directly to Adobe PDF Printer anymore on my WINDOWS 7 Ultimate x64 sp1 computer.
I have tried to uninstall and reinstall Acrobat X Pro, but the issue was not resolved.
Neither after updating to the latest version (10.1.9).
When I try to print from any software (Office 2013 / AutoCAD 2012 / Others), are displayed two windows:
    a) the first one named "Printing (not responding)", with the information: "now printing the file..."
    b) the second one named "Save PDF File As", to where I do not have access to the filename fied to insert it neither to click the "cancel" button to abort the print dialog. It seems that this window is not active.
I have to click on the red "X" button on the first window to shutdown the application. Here is the error dialog I got:
    Description:

When I try to print a webpage in Internet Explorer using the same printer, I get an "Adobe PDF" window stating "Access is denied".
Can anyone help me restoring this feature?

The reinstall is typically the last ditch effort to do. The first step is Help>Repair and Help>Updates. As far as Office 2013, the PDF Maker of AA X is not compatible and you can only print. In your list of errors it showed a problem with AcroTray.exe. As a first step, go to the print and select print-to-file. The file will be a PS file (maybe with a PRN extension). Once the printer if finished, open the file in Distiller to complete the process. If that is successful, then the problem is with AcroTray. Check your running tasks to be sure AcroTray is indeed running. If not, that is likely the problem. If it is, then restart it (it is located in the Acrobat folder). AcroTray provides the interface between the PS creation and Distiller to automate the process of creating the PDF.

  • Adobe PDF Printer not showing -- no fix found yet

The Adobe PDF printer is no longer showing on a system in the office. It's running Windows 7 Professional x64. The Adobe Acrobat version is Pro X.
I have tried litereally everything I could find here in the forums and elsewhere, including uninstall, clean-up (using the Adobe tool), reinstall, maually printer install attempts (failed), manual removal of all printer ports relating to Adobe PDF documents etc. Nothing worked.
Adobe Acrobat itself is working perfectly fine, but the PDF printer is not showing anywhere, or working. I had to install an alternative for now (PDF Creator), but obviously that's not an acceptable solution. The issue started, I believe, after some tax software package was installed that had its own PDF printer. The software has since been removed, and all troubleshooting has taken place after.
System restore is also no option, since it doesn't go as far back.
If anyone has any further suggestions, it would be very much appreciated. I am an IT professional, I'm comfortable with registry rediting or similar if that is what it takes, I'd just like to find a fix, and so far I've exhausted everything I could find (including Experts Exchange).

Try this process.  If you get any errors then screenshot them and post them back to the forum.
Try this to add Adobe PDF printer manually on Windows 7.
If windows 7 is Enterprise or better edition: (Admin rights required)
Start>search for printmanagement.msc and open the print management module
Expand the print server and expand the computer name to see availbale printers, drivers and printer ports.
    - from printers ensure there's no Adobe PDF printer, if there is delete it
    - go to ports and delete the PDF ports (the ones ending in *.pdf)
    - go to drivers and delete the PDF converter.
Take note if any errors occur, but continue with the following steps regardless.
If on windows 7 home edition, just goto start>Devices and Printers and ensure PDF pritner is not listed.
Then open the registry (if any erors deleting these keys happen, see below)
    1: go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Printers
delete any adobe PDF printer subkey present
    2: go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors
delete the PDF port monitor if present
    3: go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers
again delete and pdf printer subkey
If any erros occur, you need to set the owner of the key to the currently logged in admin user, then ensure that user has full control.
Do this by right-click the key and selecting permissions, clicking on advanced, then the owner tab.
Once all that has been done, open a command line as administrator.
Copy and paste the following commands in order
    1: net stop spooler
    2: rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection AdobePDFPortMonitor 128 C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 10.0\Acrobat\Xtras\AdobePDF\AdobePDF.inf
    3: net start spooler
    4:rundll32.exe printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /if /b "Adobe PDF" /f "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 10.0\Acrobat\Xtras\AdobePDF\AdobePDF.inf" /r "Documents\*.pdf" /m "Adobe PDF Converter"
That should set back the pdf printer.

  • Adobe PDF Printer and Adobe Distiller Printer, from where to get these?

I installed Acrobat 7.0 Professional from the CS2 suite.  During installation a message came up, "Warning 20225, Adobe Acrobat 7.0 set up was unable to create a new item: The Adobe PDF Printer Converter may be unavailable.
Get last Error: The specified module could not be found."
To convert WORD files to pdf I get "unable to find "Adobe PDF Printer or Acrobat Distiller" printer. I have run the installer in repair mode several times without success.  Where from and how do I get the Adobe Printer and/od Distiller printer from.  I have searched the Adobe web site with out success. Please help anyone who can.

Yes, the software was installed while logged in as administrator,
anti-virus was disabled too.  I first installed AA7 using my original disc
and the same messages came up and the same problem existed i.e.. could not
convert to PDF.  Uninstalled the software and installed again using the
serial no given to me by ADOBE help,CS2. Nothing seems to work.

  • Adobe PDF Printer disappearing after 9.4.2 update

A few hours ago I updated Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro to 9.4.2, supposedly coming from 9.4.1.
Since then the Adobe PDF Printer is no longer available among my printer options. That is for all applications: Adobe Acrobat, InDesign, Preview or ArchiCAD 14.
It seems there's a similar issue with the 9.4.2 Windows upgrade (see Acrobat Windows forums). What now? Deinstall Acrobat? Or how do I revert to a older version?!
    MacBookPro 2009 (5,3), Mac OS X.6.6.

    Ditto...
This is a whole lot of pain  unfortunately. I am sitting here lamenting why oh why did I upgrade?? But then it can only improve right? Whats the harm? Surely this will make things better? After all, it didn't really point out that the Acrobat Printer would no longer be available. I will never again do an upgrade on Acrobat as it has done this  to me before previously and it was a pain to sort out!
Graphics users need the Adobe Acrobat PS Printer as without this we are  not able to set document parametres for print iro commercial printing.  Crop marks, page size, reg marks etc. Which can only be accessed via the  software once the Acrobat PS Printer output option has been selected.
Simply selecting create Postscript file or PDF.... has none of those  attributes and is probably less useful than a chocolate teapot.  certainly not a "Pro" - "Professional" option, but rather meant for the  masses who have basic Acrobat requirements.
I don't really care to get into the realms as to who did what and  whether it was Apples security option or Adobe's upgarde. This outcome  is going to upset a lot of graphics users who have paid good money for  this package as it was originally intended (for the professional with  professional requirements ie PS options) and I for one am annoyed at  software companies changing the rules as time goes on. Its the consumer  that keeps being inconvenienced all the time.
If memory recalls, we have to totally uninstall and reload. But  theres a catch there somewhere if I remember correctly as the  uninstaller does not recognize certain files and if you apply the  reinstall using the older version of Acrobat, residual files from the  newer version create issues. Something like that. Not sure that makes sense to me either. But I remember theres a curve ball there somewhere...
Going to be a long night!
Rule for the future. Don't upgrade.

  • Adobe PDF Printer missing after update

Yesterday I updated my Adobe Acrobat 9 software to version 9.5.3 but now my Adobe PDF printer has disappeared. I am running Windows 7 Professional 32 bits. I have many documents to convert into PDFs but now I am unable to since the update installed. Please help?

Try repairing Acrobat installation - Open control panel, select Acrobat and chose the option to repair.

  • Adobe PDF printer freezes on my Win 7 x64 with Acrobat XI

Purchased and running Acrobat XI Standard latest update 11.0.10 on Win 7 Pro x64 (6.1.7601  Service Pack 1), a rather fresh installation (2 months).
Adobe's conversion to PDF doesn't work when using the Adobe PDF printer. The printer initiates normally but the conversion freezes midway and no PDF is created. Same trouble in every application.
From the Firefox Acrobat toolbar I get the error message "an error occured during PDF conversion"
PDF conversions triggered from within Acrobat or Office 2007 toolbar do work sometimes but not always. For example, when converting a DOCX from within Acrobat (create PDF from file) the error message is "could not open...since the file format is not supported or the file is damaged" which is nonsense.
    Other Acrobat functionality seems okay.
I already purged and reinstalled Acrobat, same result.
    Any ideas please?

I can convert XPS to PDF, and AcroTray.exe is active and running. But the Acrobat PDF Printer still freezes at approx. 10% progress bar, see screenshot.

  • I can not print an PDF using the Adobe PDF-Printer with Acrobat DC

    Hi all,
i installed the Trial of Acrobat DC but it dont let me use the Adobe PDF-Printer well, because i cannot print from any third-party-application using Adobe PDF.
I tryed to print from within Word, Editor and Browser and selected the Adobe PDF-Printer as target, but at 75% both, the Application from which i print and the PDF-Creating-Wizzard are freezing (for hours) and i need to kill the procesed. No PDF-File is created. Same Problem with trying to print a Testfile from within the Windows-Printer-Dialogs.
Only Adobe DC cause this issue, if i use freeware like Bullzip PDF the files get created successfully, so i assume its not a generally problem with PDF on my system.
What could be the problem? (pls dont say its because of the trial, a trail should allow to test all features and Why should i buy a programm if it cannot do what a freeware can do?)

    Hey Daniel,
Have you tried repair Adobe Acrobat DC?
If no, then please repair the installation under Help menu.
This could also happen due to an Adobe Acrobat DC installation file corruption. To resolve this issue :-
Uninstall Adobe Acrobat DC using the Acrobat cleaner utility.
    Restart your computer.
Re-install Acrobat Acrobat DC  Download Adobe Acrobat free trial | Acrobat Pro DC.
Let me know if the issue persist.

  • Adobe PDF Printer crashes since Update to 10.4.6 (Intel)

When I try to print to the Adobe PDF Printer (Acrobat Pro 7.07) the system freezes constantly; I can then only succesfully reboot into the single user mode. Complete optimization AND cache cleaning has to be performed then (I use Onyx 1.7); otherwise the MacBook Pro would crash sooner or later when booting into the multi user mode.
I replaced the /System/Library/Fonts-Folder with the Fonts-Folder from the installation disk and deleted the home/Library/Fonts and /Library/Fonts-folder with no effect at all. Deleting my home-folder did not help either. Reinstallation of Adobe Acrobat didn´t change anything. A fresh install (keeping my home folder and the system settings) was also a useless effort.
Do you have any suggestions, please ?

In fact, I tried the solutions I found in the discussions and on Maxfixit.com without any effect. BTW, opening a ps2-file in Acrobat Pro 7.07 and saving it as a pdf works .
