Adobe Reader 9.4.2 SIGSEGV in command-line PDF- PS conversion

NOTE: This issue was originally reported Oct. 5, 2010, against Reader 9.4.0:  http://forums.adobe.com/message/3186827
The following should emit PostScript on stdout:
     acroread -toPostScript < PDF_FILE
Try doing this with Adobe Reader 9.4.2, and all you'll see is
     Segmentation fault
Adobe Reader 9.3.4 works just fine doing such PDF->PostScript conversions.

Forgot to mention: this is occurs on both 32-bit and 64-bit RHEL5 Linux hosts at our site.

Need help resolving newly discovered problem wherein all of sudden I can no longer open and display pdf files within IE and but end up with a blank screen [shows blue loading gauge 55.8kb/55.8kb for example doc] unless I down load the pdf file and then open it using Reader XI ver 11.0.2 [Plug-Ins 11.0.01.36] which opens the files just fine. Ever since I downloaded adobe reader 10, safari won't display web page pdf's but I can paste the URL in to firefox and can see it there. How can I fix this?

    Quit Safari.
    Go to /Library/Internt Plug-Ins.
Move the AdobePDFViewer.plugin to the Trash.
    Relaunch Safari.

  • Adobe Reader XI crashes when using find (command F)

I have a Mac with intel 10.9 and Adobe crashes everytime I use find. I get the pinwheel loading symbol and then Adobe ALWAYS crashes. Is there a way I can fix this?

This problem has not been addressed for a long time.  Every time it happened, I reported it.  Each time I had to start activity monitor and force quit Adobe reader.  I uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Reader and the problem persisted
    I did find a bypass.
    Open the Applications folder
    Select Adobe Reader
Right click and move Adobe Reader to Trash
Find a PDF file in the finder and double click.
The PDF file will open in Preview and the Find command will work.
I will check back periodically to see if Adobe had fixed the problem.  So far I have not found any feature unique to Adobe Reader that I cannot live without

  • Adobe XI remains open after printing from command line

I am using a program to collect, batch print and delete multiple PDF files.
The following command line is used to print the files, after which the file is deleted and next file is collected.
         "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe" /T /N FileName.pdf
I have now upgraded to Adobe XI, however Adobe remains open (and minimized) after sending the print job to the printer, resulting in my programing freezing while waiting to delete.
Is there a parameter to close Adobe after printing?
This is rather urgent as we have started rolling out the new Adobe XI.
    OS = Windows7 Prof x64

Command line parameters are sparsely documented and are officially not supported. What is documented can be found here: http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/acrobat/sdk/pdf/intro_to_sdk/DeveloperFAQ.pd f
I've not seen anything that shows what you want to do.

  • Adobe Reader will not set as default application for .pdf in windows 8.1 pro x64

When I install adobe reader the icon/app changes from windows reader to Pick an app, I choose change and select adobe reader, the icons on my desktop flicker but nothing actually changes.Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Default Programs\Set Program Associations, Select adobe reader, Choose defaults for this program, PDF is unticked so I tick it and choose save, go back in and it is unticked again??? Right click on a pdf file, choose open with, choose default program, use this app for all .pdf files is ticked, select adobe...Still nothing changes, stays on pick an app. I uninstall adobe reader then the pdf icon changes to and default opens with windows reader again. Reinstall adobe reader and back to the same thing. ???? I am a power user, build configure computers and subsequent software, started with DOS 6.0, learned unix/linux/networking concepts/networking security/server versions of windows/active directory. The only solution I could think of was to hack the registry which I looked for but could not find. I am running 8.1 pro x64, I just discovered that windows reader (which I cant uninstall) has the same problem when adobe reader is installed. Windows will not allow either one to be set as default while they co-exist.

After an extended session with chat only to be told that since Adobe Reader was free they could not help me :-(... I figured it out myself.
I opened a administrator: command prompt window and typed "regedit"  Through extensive searching and stumbled on this key located at... HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2274202122-2588692262-2244265822-1001_Classes\.pdf\OpenWithProgids  The S-1-5-21...1001... is my current logged on user, your value may differ slightly. Typically the builtin disabled administrator account is 1000 and when you install windows and create a user account "John Doe" it will have administrator priveleges and be auto numbered 1001, every user account created therafter will increase by 1 ie...1002, 1003, 1004 etc. even if you remove (delete) an account and re-create it you wont get the same number, the system will use the next number in sequence. The old one will have been trashed never to be used again. Again here is the key...
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2274202122-2588692262-2244265822-1001_Classes\.pdf\OpenWithProgids I deleted this key under (default) on the right side...
    Name                                                                       Type                                           Data
    (Default)                                                                   REG_SZ                                    (value not set)
AppX86746z2101ayy2ygv3g96e4eqdf8r99j            REG_NONE                              (zero-length binary value)  ---- This is the key to delete!!!
Personally I selected computer on the left side and the went to file/export then chose a file name [01 29 2014 regbackup.reg] and location. Then I selected "OpenWithProgids" and did the same thing,[pdf.reg] this saves a backup of the entire regestry and the key you are about to delete as a safety net. When you are done all you have to do is go to a pdf file, right click and choose open with...Adobe Reader - the box always use this app should already be checked.
I did this and it works yet because improper regestry modification can crash your system I am compelled to warn... Use at your own risk. If you are uncomfortable modifying your registry I would suggest consulting with someone qualified and has resources to do offline registry modifications/restorations which makes it VERY important to do the computer export registry backup.

  • Adobe Reader 8.1 locks up when closing a pdf

    Hello All,
Have an odd problem.  If I open a pdf file ( with Adobe Reader 8.1) and close it, after about 30 seconds no other pdfs will open until I restart my browser.  As long as I keep the 1st pdf open, I can open as many additional ones as I want.
With the initial pdf open I get the following when I do a ps -ef | grep read
    14924 14873  2 09:09 ?        00:00:01 /opt/Adobe/Reader8/Reader/intellinux/bin/acroread --display :0.0 -progressPipe 3 -exitPipe 4
After closing out the pdf, 30 seconds later the same ps command yields this & thats where it stays until the browser restarts
    14924 14873  1 09:09 ?        00:00:02 [acroread] <defunct>
running a top -n1 shows the single zombie process and as soon as the firefox browser is shut down, everything returns to normal.  Don't see any memory issues either.
I believe my issue is the same as listed in the bug from open suse :
    https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=363381
How ever I cannot upgrade all of the clients to Suse 11.  Is there anything else i can do here to address my issue??
    Running
    Novell Linux Desktop 9 (i586)
    VERSION = 9
    RELEASE = 9
    firefox-3.0.17
    Adobe ver="8.1.7"

Someone may give you and answer here, but you might have more luck in the Reader forum - this is not that forum. It really sounds like a Windows issue as you suggest, but I will let others address this.

  • Adobe Reader X v10.1.4 no longer sends pdf file to attached printer

wants to save prn file.  (Adobe print command shows correct, default printer name.)  Printer works fine with other applications and used to print pdf files from Reader X even 2 weeks ago.  Windows 7 x64 with  MS Security Essentials - all systems up to date, no system changes (hard or soft) other than regular security and version updates.
Ran Adobe Repair and rebooted - print command showing attached printer still asks where to save the prn file instead of sending job to turned on printer which works fine just before and just after Adobe fails to use it.  Will install older version of Reader, Adobe offers v9.5 if no one has a better solution since I am clueless.

Thank you so much for trying to help.
From your question I gather you have Reader X v 10.1.4 and have no trouble printing if you send to your printer.
Alas I'm pointing to my one real printer, the Brother I'm sending the pdf file to print.  Worked fine for years until a few days ago.  Now when I hit "Print" on the bottom right of the below panel I get the "Save As" screen asking where I wish to save the pdf file name I'm trying to print followed by .prn.
I have no problems in any other application printing.  If installing an earlier version of Adobe Reader proves it's not v 10.1.4 specifically, I'll have to try and send the prn file to the printer, perhaps by using the old DOS type command, or see if I can print pdf files on another system.
You just made me think to try my backup PC with Adobe Reader X v10.1.0 - This works fine, both on its own printer and on the below named Brother attached to this system.  So the problem is either v10.1.4 or some interaction of Adobe with very recently installed Microsoft security or other OS updates for 64bit Windows 7.
    THANK YOU!

  • I downloaded Adobe Reader now I am unable to open certain pdf files

I downloaded Adobe Reader and now I am unable to open the majority of the pdf. files from the internet.  Has this happened to anyone else and if so how did you resolve the issue?

    Back up all data.
Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Can't get Adobe Reader to print statement from Scottrade on-line

I have Vista 64 bit Home Premium , Adobe Reader 9, version 9.3. When online with Windows Internet Explorer at www.scottrade .com, I go to my account, account history, account statements and select January 2010 statement to view and a popup screen which should show my statement, but the screen is blank. This screen usually shows the selected statement in PDF and I can print it out. If I wait a minute or so a popup massage comes up that says: Adobe PDF Document. "There is a problem With Adobe Acrobat/Reader. Please exit Adobe Acrobat/Reader and try again."  I exit try again and the same thing happens again. I have uninstalled/reinstalled Adobe Reader, restarted the computer and cannot get it to work.  I did not have this problem several weeks ago.

I don't have the printing problem but I do have a very similar situation that I believe is a closely tied to your printing problem.  I think the problem is in the way Internet Explorer or Win 7 processes the Adobe button action/script that calls for it to print or save the displayed PDF.
I have a problem with saving Adobe PDF files from inside Internet Explorer 8.  I'm running Windows 7 Pro, IE 8, Adobe Reader 9.3, and Acrobat 9.3 Pro.  Reader is my IE 8 Add-On.  I can open the PDF file, click on "save a copy" either the icon button or go thru the File menu, but don't ever see the dialogue window that asks where I want to save it to, and of course the PDF file is not saved to my computer.  I click and it just goes null.  I've also tried the CTRL+Shift+S hotkey combo to no avail.
I once saw a dialogue window that popped up that alluded to "going outside the protected mode to save it" and did I want to continue.  I've only seen that message window once and it was for just a split second.
I experimented with Protected Mode.  I can open, read, and save the pdf file if I DISABLE Protected Mode.  ENABLING Protected Mode to come back ON resets and reproduces the problem.
So, thinking it had to do with the Internet Security level, I cranked that setting down to the minimum but kept Protected Mode enabled.  The problem was still there.
The workaround I use (until someone gives me a better fix) to get the "SAVE a copy to my computer or other location" button of the PDF to actually work is to:
Double-click Internet|Protected Mode: On at the bottom of the window or tab displaying the PDF file.  This brings up the Internet Security settings panel.
Uncheck Enable Protected Mode.  You are putting your computer at a bit of a risk... but you aren't going web surfing with Protected Mode turned Off.  Do not leave the site where you turned it off.
Click Apply and OK.  Close your browser window with the PDF and reopen it to the PDF you need to Save.  If you are on a pop-up window or a second tab, you only have to close that one window or tab and reopen it.
You may have to log back on if you are working with an online statement of account.
Your browser should also show that it is "Internet | Protected Mode: Off".  A yellow bar at the top of the page warns you the Protected Mode is turned Off.
Save the PDF as you've been doing all along until our software (Win 7 Pro U/G with IE8) started belching.
After saving, repeat steps 1, 2, and 3 above with rechecking Enable Protected Mode, setting it to On.  Clicking the yellow bar at the top of your browser gets you right back into the security settings panel to reset the mode.
Close your browser and reopen it.  Verify Protected Mode is reset to On.
It's risky to disable the Protected Mode, but if I need to save a copy of a pdf file, such as a statement of an online account, this is the only way I've discovered how to save a copy of it short of printing a hard copy, then scanning the hard copy to a pdf (a digital file) for storing/disseminating it.  My workaround may also work for your printing needs.  Try it once and don't forget to reset the Protected Mode back to On.
It's a nuisance, a real pain in the ol' sphincter, to have to do these steps but until Microsoft and Adobe have a meeting of minds and solve the problem... well, I gotta do what I gotta do.
I've only had Win 7 Pro for about a week. It was working great when I first upgraded from Win XP Pro (clean install) and a day or so ago without any significant changes or alterations on my part it just started acting up.
I posted this in Microsoft's Win 7 Forum as well so maybe one side or the other will fix it.

  • Adobe Reader Crashes when I attempt to print a PDF

    Hi,
I am running 11.0.02 Adobe Reader on my Macbook Pro (10.6.8 Snow Leopard). Each time I download a pdf via Safari (5.1.8) and try to print, Adobe Reader locks up and crashes.
When we logged in on a guest account on my Mackbook Pro, the problem disappeared. Printing Worked.
Logged back in as me, then deleted a number of p.list files in my library preferences, even tried deleting and resintalling Adobe Reader. Still the same problem. Try to print a pdf document in Safari, Adobe Reader locks up and crashes. Save the same file to the desktop and open it directly in Adobe Reader, try to print, Adobe Reader locks up and crashes.
Any thoughts on how to fix this?
    David

    Hello Pat,
    You are absolutely the BEST.
I followed your two recommendations and now the program is working perfectly. Yes, my Reader XI was version 11.0.10 when I was having the problems.
I never would have figured out the solution to the problem without your help.  I was very pleased with your follow through.
I really appreciate your help.  THANK YOU! – THANK YOU!
Adobe is a great program – I have used it for years and this is the first time I have had any problem.
    Kind regards,
    Hartley
