Adobe Reader Security (API)

Hi,
I am looking to put some pdf documents onto our intranet web server. Is it possible to control permissions by disabling or enabling buttons on the toolbar accordingly. Some users will have full access to documents, others read only and if possible I would like to control the Save and Print functions. Not sure if this is possible via some sort of API or not.
Thanks
Mark

//PermData[9].ReqObj is if you have the full save persmission
else if (0 == PDDocPermRequest(pdDoc, PermData[9].ReqObj, PermData[9].ReqOpr, NULL))
     aspPathFileOut = ASPathFromPlatformPath(szPathFileOut);
     PDDocSave(pdDoc,
               PDSaveIncremental,
               aspPathFileOut,
               NULL,
               NULL,
               NULL);
I have tried incremental, and full save, and both give me the same error. Any additionaly ideas? Can you clarify what you meant by "an extended form"?
Thanks for your time,

  • Adobe Reader Security Settings menu item missing

On a user PC, under Adobe Reader XI (11.0.2), I am not finding the Security Setting Menu option. I searched for this, and I found out that it must be under "Edit/Protection".
    See snapshot below:
    Any idea ?
    Appreciate your help.
    Tarek.

    Thanks for the reply, Nikhil,
    Also, I found another issue.
After I managed to create the Signature using Windows Certificate Option, I tried to take a backup from the certificate store from Internet Options -> Content -> Certificate -> Export, then I am unable to export the Private Key. Only the public key option is available, and the other option "Yes, export the Private key" is dimmed or disabled.
Is this also new feature of Adobe Reader XI?
I am 100% sure that in other installations on another PC, after I create the Windows Certificate of the Digital Signature from Adobe Reader Security Settings, then I can take a backup of this certificate from Internet Options and I can select this option "Yes, export the Private key" during export of the certificate.
Appreciate your feedback on this matter.
    Tarek.

  • Adobe Reader security update to 9.3.1 not working.

I have updated adobe reader to 9.3.1 but in Secunia PSI it's still being reported as insecure.
I uninstalled adobe reader completely, cleared all traces from the registry, and reinstalled 9.3.0, and let it check for updates. it said there weren't any.
I downloaded the security fix to update it to 9.3.1 and installed it successfully.
Adobe reader now says it's 9.3.1 in the Help About option on the help menu.
However the Reader exe file AcroRd32.exe version is still 9.3.0.148 dated 21/12/2009, as are all the plugin files except for the Forms plugin that is version 9.3.1.203 dated 02/02/2010.
I have since done a successful repair install of Adobe Reader, but PSI is still saying it's insecure because of the file version 9.3.0.148 for AcroRd32.exe, and the plugin files except the Forms plugin,
Why isn't the security update to 9.3.1 updating the exe file and plugins?  Is it even working at all and fixing the critical security risks it's supposed to be fixing? It would seem all it's doing is to change the Help/About screen to read 9.3.1, and changing the Forms plugin...
Running on WIndows 7 home premium.

I have same problem using Windows Vista Home Premium. Just ran Secunia and went to link and downloaded and installed 9.3.1.203, but, AcroRd31.exe still shows ver 9.3.0.148 in the Acrobe Reader files on my computer???  I do not think that the problem is solved. Apparently the update is not working correctly.

  • Why can't I open pdf documents after using Adobe Reader security?

I have been able to open pdfs perfectly well up until I changed the security settings on Adobe Reader.  As I read somewhere that Apples have an inbuilt pdf reader I trashed everything Adobe, but still can't open pdfs.  Tried using Preview  to no avail.
Is there some other way of opening pdfs without reinstalling Adobe?

You didn't think of mentioning that in your first post?  So it's not Adobe Reader or Preview you are having problems with.  It's pdf's in your browser!
For Safari, you need to remove the adobe pdf plugins which Adobe apparently screwed up.  You need to remove:
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin
I think you can "get away with" removing just the second one.  But both for sure should allow you to open pdf's in a browser (all browsers).

  • Adobe Reader Security Updates after Windows XP End of Support

    Hi,
I have to check up for our customer, whether there will be any Security Updates for Adobe Reader (XI) on Windows XP after End of Support next year.
Haven't found any information on the web :-(
    Thanks in advance,
    Nicolai

I don't know, and like you, haven't seen anything.
    Here's what I do know.
Android dropped ALL support for Flash Playe June 2012 and Adobe continued to develop and release security updates for the older Android Flash Player versions up till September 10 of this year.
Support for Linux ended with version 11.2, but security fixes for Linux Flash Player are still being developed and released.
Given the still-widespread use of XP in schools and corporate environments, I'd have to say that support (at least security updates) will go on for a while after next June14 when Microsoft officially "sunsets" XP. How long that will be is not info I have.

  • Adobe Reader, PDDoc API

I have a form that is Reader Enabled, and I am trying to use PDDocSave as Irosenth suggests http://forums.adobe.com/thread/877430. However every time I use the API I receive a "An unimplemented or obsolete function was called." error message. Is Irosenth mistaken? If not please tell me what I might be doing wrong. If so, are there any other API's I might use to do this? It is a valid Reader plugin, it loads and all other features work, just not the ones associated with PDDocSave. If anyone can give me anything that would be even slightly useful I would be very greatful, I have been working on this for weeks with no success.
    Thanks, Shane

  • Adobe Reader security (CS3)

    Hello Forum,
I'm not sure if this question belongs here or in Acrobat.
(I am running Windows XP, SP3.. I'm up-to-date with Windows updates, and Java updates)
I have Adobe Web Premium CS3, which includes Acrobat. **My concern is having the latest security updates for READER**
I have recently run across a few PDF browser exploits in the wild, which Zone Alarm barely stopped, and I am concerned.
Is there any way I can run Reader version 10.x as a separate standalone for my browser? If so, how do I do that, and not conflict with Acrobat Pro in CS3?
I have installed all the latest updates for my CS3 product, but I do not believe that my version of CS3 Reader (8.2.5) is up to snuff, because of the problems I recently encountered.
    Any advice is appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Kathy

    Hi Michael,
I currently only have CS3 (includes Acrobat). But I am concerned that the bundled version which includes Reader is not protected against the latest PDF exploits (even with the latest Adobe updates).
Even if it is the case that Acrobat Professional requires its own bundled Reader... I wish that I could assign the separate/ latest Reader 10.x to interact with my browser. Although Flash is part of my CS3, my Browser and Player is the same latest version available.
How long ago did you have Zone Alarm? Was it Pro or free version, firewall only?
What problems did you have with Adobe which were caused by ZA?
What are you using now for Virus protection as well as firewall, if additional?
    Thanks,
    Kathy

  • Adobe Reader security issue

In the lastest version, if Reader identifies the document as having a signature is allows you change the document. You cannot save it but you can print it with the changes you have made. This means that a pdf is no longer secure and can be altered by anyone. Was that the intent? Is there anyway that we can save ous documents so they cannot be altered after we email?

You can set Acrobat security in the usual way to limit the ability of Adobe products to edit them, but please carefully read the warning you get when setting security the first time. Of course, if the document is worth having in a different form, there's nothing to stop anyone retyping it!
Alternatively, if the issue is authentity/stopping fakes/etc. you should look at digital signatures, which are designed to prove a document is authentic and detect with certainty any tampering.

  • Adobe Reader Security

Now that Word 2013 allows one to open and edit PDF's, is there any additional security feature available to prevent them from editing the PDF?

I have same problem using Windows Vista Home Premium. • How to control Preferences setting in adobe Reader?

    Hi,
Is there any way to control the adobe reader->security-> Preferences setting at run time at adobe livecycle server either by Javascript or API.
I want to change the setting of the pdf before rendering forms to client desktop.
    Regards
    Sunil

LiveCycle is designed to deliver content (including PDF's to the client) but it is not designed to control or manipulate client software settings, including Reader.  Furthermore, for security reasons, you cannot pass scripts in forms or PDF's that will modify Reader preferences, unless the form kicks off a script that is part of privileged code (i.e. trusted local script file or certified document).  Alternatively, the Reader installation can be tuned as per corporate requirements but that is usually done using a network push of the installer.

  • Trusted certificates from your previous version of Adobe Reader were found.

After upgrading Adobe Reader from 10 to 11, some users are getting "Adobe Reader Security - Trusted certificates from your previous version of Adobe Reader were found.  Would you like to import them."  I need to know what registry settings we can modify to either set this automatically to "Import" or "Use Default"  I need to add one of these options into our Adobe Reader Settings GPO that is using group policy preferences.  This only appears for users who have data in C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Acrobat\10.0\Security and only the very first time the user opens Adobe Reader after the upgrade per user profile on a given server.

I'm not sure this is true: "If they don't exist then there is no dialog. " Could be, but I've never heard of it.
However, acrodata files perform a number of functions for several features, so removing them is unwise. Also, they will just come back when a user exercizes certain features.
Better to just turn off the feature with the supported preference.

  • Reader Security popup after X to XI upgrade - have tried customization wizard, reg edits, everything

    Title: Adobe Reader Security
Body: Trusted certificates from your previous version of Adobe Reader were found.
Would you like to import them?
Any certificates that are not imported in this step will not be available in this version of Adobe Reader.
    Buttons: [Import] [Use Default]
I've read through at least a dozen posts on many sites about this and no one has a real resolution.  Let me tell you what I've tried.  Each attempt was a clean upgrade from X to XI.
1 - First I tried the Customization Wizard, which did everything I want except get rid of this popup.
2 - Then again I went back in the Wizard and set the Directory Servers (C:\Users\myusername\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Acrobat\11.0\Security\directories.acrodata) and Trusted Identities (C:\Users\myusername\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Acrobat\11.0\Security\addressbook.acrodata) to copies of my own files on my own computer that did not get the post-install popup.
3 - I tried the same as #2, but with copies of my files from the C:\Users\myusername\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Acrobat\10.0\Security\ folder (rather than version 11.
4 - I tried in the Wizard to add keys to HKCU\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\11.0\Security\cDigSig\cAdobeDownload for bAskBeforInstalling and bLoadSettingsFromURL both to 0.
5 - I tried on the cliet PC to change HKEY_USERS\clientusername\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\Security\cPPKHandler\bCustomPrefsCreated to 0 prior to installation.
All of these still resulted in prompts to import the old certificates.  I'm out of ideas.

I am dealing with the same problem.  I recently inherited ownership of Acrobat at my firm so I'm not as familiar with it, but it appears that what we need to do is automatically copy c:\users\[userID]\appdata\roaming\Adobe\Acrobat\10.0\security\*.acrodata to c:\users\[userID]\appdata\roaming\Adobe\Acrobat\11.0\security.
I did not see a way to do this using the customization wizard so that it happens automatically for all users on each workstation when Acrobat 11 is installed, nor did I see a checkbox of some sort to the effect of "Automatically import trusted certificates from 10.0" which would be incredibly helpful.
It appears that the wizard will allow me to copy files from a specific known user profile on a machine but that's obviously not much use for a wide rollout.
Am I missing something obvious?  What is the simplest way to accomplish this?  Is there a Registry setting that will handle this?
    Thank in advance.

  • Adobe Reader closes when print is clicked

    Using Adobe Reader Version 10.1.2.45
When I open a PDF Document and either click on the Print icon or click file > Print   Adobe just closes the program. I've uninstalled and reinstalled 2 times. All other apps on my PC recognize and print fine to my default printer.
I just can't figure this one out.
    All help is greatly appreciated
    Jerry

There is currently a known issue with Adobe Reader 10.1.2.
You can resolve the issue temporarily by using one of the workarounds in the forum post below:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/949886?tstart=0
Most people find that workaround 2 is the one that works the best but decreases Adobe Reader security slightly. So best to re-enable Protected Mode when you aren't printing.
Adobe plans to release a fix for this issue in the future.

I am getting messages that I can't download and read .pdf files since I have the wrong Adobe reader. I know about their security disasters of course, but I downloaded the latest version of Adobe Reader from the Adobe web site and I have other ,pdf file readers as well, and for some reason they won't work either. I have 5 computers running top end processors and RAM. By this I mean I have one, this one which I am using that has an AMD Phenom Black 3.2 Quad-core with 8 GBs of Corsair top DDR2 RAM, my other two AMD have either an Athlon II triple core with 4 GBs of DDR2 Corsair RAM, one with the Phenom X4 965 3.4 GHz Quad-core with 8 GBs of their best DDR2 RAM, and two Intels with the i7 920 Processors using the triple channel 1366 socket processors and one with 8 GBs of low latency DDR3 RAM and the other with 4 GBs of the same RAM. I am getting the message on this one, which has a fresh install of XP Pro X64 operating system, as do the other 4 as well. I have run Avast Business Pro Anti-virus on this one, which I am getting the message on with a single result which I deleted, and also both Spybot Search and Destroy, which came back clean as well as Malwarebytes Antimalware, which got a lot of tracing cookies now removed, and SuperAntiSpware which also found a few cookies also now deleted. Can you tell me what I need to do to get these files to show as .pdf files rather than as a clean blank page. One other issue is that I wish to know how to turn off my downloads so they are saved and Mozilla will give me the option of returning them instead of me losing them all together as it does now. Thanks for your assistance. If there is another Adobe reader I should download and install, could you provide me with the link to it? I appreciate your assistance here
== When I download and try to read a .pdf file and when I am asked to turn off all Firefox files and if I do, I lose them since I need to know how to save them without rebooting my computer.

Brilliant! Problem solved! Thanks so much.

  • How do I change my security settings to allow pdf files to auto-open in new version of adobe reader?

I have just updated my Adobe Reader and now I can't download and open pdf files anymore.
I tried going through the preferences in Reader, but it says that the setting is tied in with 'security administration' settings on Mac OS X.
I have not actually changed anything in the settings so am assuming that this is something to do with the most recent update to either Adobe Reader or OS X security.
What can I do to fix this?

    Thank you for your help.
I also found that Mozilla Firefox seemed to be part of the problem.
Switched to google chrome and this seems to have made downloading pdf's possible again
