Adobe Reader X produces "gibberish"; Adobe Reader 9.4.0 works fine

I have a program that does certain things, but the code is irrelevant: I can manually duplicate the process.
1. I have C:\Users\Me\Temp\Report.PDF.  I can open it and it is perfectly readable.
2. I set the printer preferences (output file name, output folder, file format, etc. -- it is a Black Ice "printer") and set it as the default printer.
3. I right-click the file and choose Print.
4. I open and view the output file.
I have been using Adobe Reader 9 and had no problems.
Our company is now using Adobe Reader X and a tester tried the program with Adobe Reader X and had problems; so I installed Adobe Reader X last night and, sure enough, immediately the "gibberish" problem started.
Today, I uninstalled Adobe Reader X and downloaded and installed Adobe Reader 9.4.0 and the output PDF is readable again.
The problem occurs with Adobe Reader X but not with Adobe Reader 9.  This is doubly confirmed.
What changes have been made between versions 9.4.0 and X that would produce "gibberish" in an output PDF?

It was the new feature, Protected Mode.
However, the problem is not yet solved.  I can MANUALLY uncheck the Enable Protected Mode at Startup checkbox (on General page from Edit, Preferences), but it needs to be done programmatically.
I found the Registry setting I want to modify in code before someone prints:
1. The key is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\Privileged
2. The value is bProtectedMode
3. The data I want to write is the number 0, for off.
I wrote a program that can modify registry settings for REG_SZ data types and it works.  But bProtectedMode is REG_DWORD, and I cannot get that to work.  If I leave the desired data 0 as a number I get a data-type mismatch error because the Win32 API function is declared to expect a string for that argument.  But if I convert the desired data 0 into a string -- I've tried "0", "   0",, and "0000", the last 2 because REG_DWORD should be expecting 4 bytes of data -- I get weird values in the Registry's data.
Anyone know the trick?

  • Firefox thinks Adobe Flash Player is not installed. It is and works fine with IE. Also fighting Firefox crashes when opening. Running system 7, 64 bit.

Firefox works in Safe mode. Narrowed the issue down to plugins. Don't have an Adobe Flash player plugin, but do have Adobe Acrobat and Windows Live Photo gallery (which I'm considering suspect).

There are two versions of Flash, the ActiveX version for Internet Explorer and the Plugin version for other browsers like Firefox.

  • I can not get Firefox to recognize my CAC reader or use my CAC reader to access websites requiring CAC login. IE works fine but I do not want to switch back and forth. Any Help?

I have a CAC reader that Firefox does not recognize. It is installed correctly as have all the necessary certificates and IE can use the CAC reader seamlessly. I do not need the CAC to log-on to my computer, just to log-on to certain websites (mostly military).

For users that need to change between certificates of their CAC card, I found in Firefox 4.x you have to import the DOD pki files. To do this follow the instructions at the URL below inside Firefox (do all 4). After successfully completing the imports, restart Firefox and when you get to a DOD website like "DISA web-mail" it will ask you to pick the certificate you would like to use. For the email certificate look at the details of each certificate and find the one that has your email address attached to it. This one you much use for all email certificate authentication.

  • After upgrading to Firefox 18 I can't open Google, Gmail, Google Reader or any other Google website. Other sites work fine.

Sometimes I can't even start Firefox. I've cleared everything, cookies, cache, restarted computer, did a security scan, uninstalled/reinstalled Firefox (deleted all data, bookmarks and everything) and it still won't load.

I have this problem with MOZILLA FIREFOX VER 18.
Older versions were good. When you reinstall it works. However, after sometime it stops.
    No issues with Internet explorer.
Please stop pointing to Virus Issues for every failure that Firefox has. My system is clean.

  • Web Apps doesn't read Word, nor reads/edits Powerpoint, but allows read/edits Excel, Sharepoint 2010

I'll keep this short and sweet. Hopefully some light can be shed on my scenario and a solution.
I have a Server 2008 R2 with Sharepoint 2010 and Office Web Apps setup. The installations went off without a hitch, and I setup a Site Collection with several other children websites beneath it.
Currently, the three different file types have three different kinds of  behaviors. These behaviors are assuming the user has full control of the document from AD/Sharepoint's point of view.
Spreadsheets can be read in browser and edited in browser. Everything works fine here.
Word documents cannot be read from browser, but they can be edited normally like one would expect. After sitting there for ~two minutes, it gives the error: "Word Web App cannot open this document because the server is still processing the document."
PowerPoint doesn't let any user read or edit any presentation. When trying to read, it says "Either network connectivity has been lost or the server is too busy to service your request. Check your network connection." when trying to edit, it says
"PowerPoint web app encountered an error."
Odd. =/ What bothers me is that the behaviors aren't consistent, they differ among all three. If it were the same I'd think connectivity or permissions issues. Ie, content db only allows read, thus all 3 services only have read permissions on the db, that
sort of thing. To my understanding, during the installation the default pools/accounts were used("Sharepoint Web Services Default", "NT AUTHORITY\Network Service", etc).
This is what I've tried so far:
Back to square 1: Is it installed? Is it activated? Yes to both. It installed normally and it's activated in Site Collection(Site Col Admin -> Site Col Features -> OWA is active).
Restarted the PP and Word viewing services. No change. (I tried deleting the service app and making a new one with the same name, no dice. Also tried making sure the Word Vieweing Svc App was under the existing application pool, entitled "Sharepoint
Web Services Default". Even tried making a new application pool and having it under Predefined -> "Network Service", and trying other pools still got me nothing)
Under Manage Service Connections (App Management-> Manage Web Apps), the Word Viewing Service, Excel Service application, and PowerPoint Service application proxy were all checked(among the other things checked).
(One thread I saw on Sharepoint Stack Exchange said trying to change browser file handilng from strict to permissive didn't work either.)
What could be going on that's restricting those actions on Word/PP documents? Only potential thing that might be screwing things up is my SQL server that houses the content DB for my web app is on a different server than Sharepoint/OWA. I don't know what
would be interfering however. Is there a different permission set for the different OWA services? How would I check what OWA is using to connect to the content DBs(and which ones are they using, along with what permissions they have vs what they should have)?
Is there something I missed? Will uninstalling and reinstalling OWA help in any way(as long as I don't lose my documents!)?
Anything to get me at least on the right track would be appreciated, thanks =)

Anybody have any ideas at all? At this point I'm willing to try just about anything..

To configure the browser to use Acrobat or Adobe Reader to open PDF files:
    1. Quit Internet Explorer(any other browser)
    2. Start Acrobat or Adobe Reader.
    3. Choose Edit > Preferences.
    4. Select Internet in the list on the left.
    5. Deselect(Uncheck) Display PDF in Browser, and click OK.

  • How can I unistalling Adobe Reader without damaging other Adobe software??

I want to uninstall old versions of Adobe Reader, which for some reason are not removed once I update the software. The old versions I want to get rid of are 6.0, 7.0 and 7.0.5 (I just installed 8.0). I cannot find an Adobe Reader unistaller anywhere, and the Adobe site itself is not much help.
I found an old thread here in the fora (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7064835&#7064835) that partially addresses the issue, but the advise is applicable only if there is no other Adobe software installed in the computer (see Kurt Lang's reply). I have other Adobe software, including Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.
So, question is: How can I uninstall those old versions of Reader, other than dragging the folders to the trash, as that might not be advisable in my case?
And why is it that updates to the software are not automatically deleting previous versions of it? Is it something in my computer's setting that's causing this to happen?
    Thanks much for the help.

Just drag the older versions of the Reader out of the Applications folder to the trash. Done. They have nothing to do in any way with other Adobe products on the hard drive.
Edit: To clarify on my post you linked to. As long as you stick to just dumping the Reader apps themselves in the main Applications folder, you're fine. Just leave the few small leftovers in the Support folders alone.

  • How can I change the default pdf reader from the installed (but not yet registered) Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro to Adobe Reader XI?

How can I change the default pdf reader from the installed (but not yet registered) Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro to Adobe Reader XI? I'm having some hiccups getting Adobe to register the software, but since I set it as the default .pdf reader during setup, things try (and fail) to open in the as yet unregistered software. How can I change it temporariiy to the Acrobat Reader XI that I have installed?

    Anubha,
It worked! Thank you so much.
I'd opened file with the 'Open with' feature then clicking Adobe Reader,
but that didn't do it. When I used 'Open with', then 'Choose default
program...', it worked like a charm.
    Again, thank you!

    Hi Zach.
Sorry to say but Elements 12 came out several months before your camera. Adobe stops updating camera raw files for old software editions so that people have to buy new versions of the software when they get a new camera. It happened to me with LR3 when I got a new camera.
There are works rounds but they are a lot of extra steps and I think you would be converting the files to Some format other than RAW (tiff?) and which I am not sure will perform the same.
I think you just need to get a newer version of Elements.
