ADS+Terminal Services on a Single Physical Server running Windows Server 2008 R2

We have a Dual Processor Server (2 x Intel Xeon E5-2620v2 + 32GB RAM) running on Windows Server 2008 R2. This has ADS configured. We now wish to add a VDI Setup with NComputing Zero-Clients. We have to run Terminal Services with User RDS CAL + User
CAL for all VDI Clients.
Please confirm if we can have both the ADS & Terminal Services running on the same physical server ? Are there known issues or crashes due to this ? Or should both these run on two different servers ? Customer does not want to invest in one more server
& OS. Hence, we have to run both the services on a single physical server. Customer has just upgraded his server to a Dual Processor with 32GB RAM to accommodate both the services.
Please advice, if we can run both the ADS & TS on the same server. What is the best practice for this Solution ?
Thanks & Regards,
VR

Hi,
After referring your comment I can say that, you can able to use ADS and Terminal service on same physical server with server 2008 R2. But installing a terminal server on an Active Directory domain controller is not recommended. I suggest that it’s not a good
practice to manage the environment in that way. If possible, then try to run on two different machines for better result and to avoid any problem. Allowing users to run programs on a domain controller could create security risks and performance issues.
If the Terminal Server role service is installed on a domain controller, the security settings of the domain controller will need to be adjusted to allow user’s remote access to the server. This remote access is controlled by the "Allow log on through Terminal
Services" user rights assignment, which can be configured by using the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC).
You can refer below link for more information.

  • Two SAP production systems in a single physical server

    Dear All,
Is SAP support installing two SAP production systems like SAP ECC 6.0 of one customer and ECC 6.0 with a different SID and instance no. for another customer in a single physical server? Would like to know from the experts is this possible? If yes ,  what are the things to take care of this design if any?

  • How to Implement DC and RDS on a single physical server

Can any one guide me that how to install DC and RDS on a single physical server. It would be highly great full.

    Hi,
Whilst possible to do it isn't supported and you should have your DC as a dedicated DC and then a separate server(s) for the remote desktop session host.

  • Multiple SAP system on single physical server.

    Hello Experts.
We are in process of implementaing SAP solution withLandscpe having systems ECC 6.0, SolMan 4.0, BI. We are planning to have 3 Sytem landscape for all.
Now but currently we are having only one Physical server
Is it possible to Install 6 SAP system on single server?(DEV and QAS for ECC, Solman, BI respectively). The server is having sufficient hardware for 6 system as per sap standered. Planne OS is RHEL and DB MaxDB. Initially we are having 16 GB RAM extendable.
Will SAP support such kind of landscape?

    Hi Nikhil
    Just my two cents:
Never put non-prod/prod systems on the same server, how would you test os patches, what if system wide components cause problems, what if - for example - you want to upgrade your database on the dev system, but you need a new library, which is not compatible to the version needed by the prod system.
Your single linux box will not be big enough to hold all these systems, trust me. And x86_64 hw is sooo cheap ))

  • Service accounts rights in Sql Server 2008 clustered installation.

I have to install  Sqlserver 2008 in a 2 node clustered environment in
Windows Server 2008 R2. For that I have set up 4 less privileged
a/c in domain for Db engine, Sql agent, Reporting services and Analysis
service. During the installation I plan to specify these a/c's in the
domain to run the above 4 services under these a/c. I understand the sql server agent
a/c should have 6 rights in the local computer security policy
ie a)Adjust memory quotas for process,b)Act as a part of os,c)Bypass
traverse chechking,d)Log on as a batch job and e)Log on as a service.
Will these rights get automatically assigned during installation
or should it be manually assigned in each node under its local security
policy. Also what are rights for the other 3 service a/c and do these
rights get assigned automatically during installation.

You should get Domain account created before starting cluster installation and specifically give these rights to the account.
Regarding rights below link might be helpful
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/askjay/archive/2011/02/28/required-rights-for-sql-server-service-account.aspx
When installing cluster make sure you use Domain account which is added as local administrator on both nodes.
It should have righst to create Computer name object(CNO) in domain where cluster is being created
Windows CNO must have complete rights on SQL server CNO.You should also take help from AD team in providing these rights and understanding if any.

  • Can service broker work between SQL Server 2008 and 2012, ssbdiagnose returned an error !

    Hello,
We have a setup of three applications that sends and receive messages using Service Broker.
    One part is on a server, we'll call 'S' have Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (SP3) - 10.0.5512.0 (X64)
    The other part, we'll call 'E' use to have Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (SP3) - 10.0.5512.0 (X64).
But I am migrating these apps to a new server, we'll call 'C' that has: Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (SP1) - 11.0.3339.0 (X64)
I have used this command line tool to test it :
ssbdiagnose -E CONFIGURATION FROM SERVICE "//E/S/CService" -S "ServerC" -d EDatabase TO SERVICE "//S/S/ECService" -S ServerS -d SDatabase ON CONTRACT //E/S/ECContact
    It returned:
An internal exception occurred: Cannot read property ServiceBrokerGuid.
This property is not available on SQL Server 7.0.
So, I am wondering, is it supposed to work between these two versions ?
As more info, in the previous setup, it was using certificates but I have changed the Endpoints to use only Windows Authentication.
    Thanks for any advice.
    Claude

    Hello,
Many thanks to you and Fanny for looking at my question.
In fact I was unclear, please let me provide you with more details.
Maybe the use of "always on" plays a role here...  I will use different names so it might be clearer...
    ServerSoftware2008 server has SoftwareDB database.
    ServerEmployees2008 server has EmployeesDB database.
Service broker use to work fine between those two above, with certificates.
The new server comes in, two virtual servers with SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition with Always On.
I call it ServerEmployeesC but this is the listener.  Behind, there is ServerEmployees2012_A and ServerEmployees2012_B and of course, both have a EmployeesDB database.
So, to use SSBDiagnose, I wonder if I need to use quotes around values and if I can use the listener name with FQDN.  Concerning the use of instance name in the syntax, there is only one instance per server, is it best practice to use it on the command
    line ?
Here is again, my command :
    ssbdiagnose -E CONFIGURATION FROM SERVICE "//E/S/E" -S "ServerEmployeesC.sub.acme.com" -d EmployeesDB TO SERVICE "//S/S/E" -S "ServerSoftware2008.sub.acme.com" -d SoftwareDB ON CONTRACT //E/S/E
Again, many thanks for any help you will be able to provide, the people who configured this application at first are no longer here and I am trying to configure the new server in a task of migrating to SQL Server 2012 for one of the two servers involved
and I am having a lot of problems doing it.
    Best regards,
    Claude

    Hi BlakeDuffey,
Generally, we may see the error messge "Default appdomain failed to initialize" in the application log when try to start Reporting Services if the RSreportserver.config file has been modified unexpectedly. At this time, I suggest that you back up your
current RSreportserver.config file, and then check the config file referring to the following article:
    RSReportServer Configuration File
Note: The RSReportServer.config is located in the <drive>:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS10_50.MSSQLSERVER\Reporting Services\ReportServer folder.
If you cannot find the exceptions in the RSreportserver.config file, please post the config file so that we can help you to check it.
Meanwhile, please also check the Reporting Services Log file to see if there are any error messages related to the issue. If there are, please post the error messges as well. The Reporting Services Log file is located in the <drive>:\Program Files\Microsoft
    SQL Server\MSRS10_50.MSSQLSERVER\Reporting Services\LogFiles folder.
    Hope this helps.

  • WSUS service pack updates for SQL Server 2008 R2

Hello, how do we configure WSUS for SQL Server Service Packs? One problem we have is that we do not see SQL server 2008 R2 SP2 available as a download from our WSUS server and this is when SQL SP1 is installed. Now I can apply these service packs manually
but when we have 100's of virtual machines with different versions and editions of SQL this task can be quite daunting. Suggestions please?
    RFDZ12

from memory, SQL service packs and CUs are not released via WSUS.
This article is a good reference for (products other than Windows) for what has been released via WSUS:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsserver/bb456965
The equivalent article for Windows releases, is
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894199
Or, you can check the MU catalog (which doesn't necessarily mean the update is available via WSUS, but if the update you seek in is the MU catalog, you can usually import it into your WSUS)
    http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/
some updates for products are not able to be released via WSUS, for various reasons, and so in those cases, you need a different deployment solution.

  • Secure LDAP with Multiple DPS's on Single Physical Server

I am having an issue connecting to the directory server over SSL via the directory proxy server. I have enabled SSL and tested successfully in some situations, however this situation is unique.
    DPS 5.2 patch 4
    Directory Server patch 4
I have applied the neccessary hotfixes from sun to resolve the SSL issues.
There are 3 physical servers. 2 of those servers each have 2 instances of directory proxy server running. The 3rd server has 2 separate Directory Server instances running (1 for enterprise authentication, 1 for Access Manager). Each physical proxy server has 1 instance running for each Directory server instance (1 enterprise LDAP, 1 AM LDAP). All 4 proxy instances can connect successfully to the Directory Masters over the unsecure ports (389 for enterprise LDAP, 55389 for AM LDAP). On the proxy servers, only the initial proxy instance can connect to the secure port successfully. For instance, on server 1 first the DPS for enterprise LDAP was installed then a DPS for AM LDAP was added. Only the enterprise proxy instance can connect successfully over SSL. On server 2 initially the AM LDAP instance was installed and then an enterprise LDAP instance was added. In this case only the AM LDAP instance can connect successfully.
For both instances of the proxy the appropriate certificates have been installed and verified. I can use the dps-instance-cert8.db for the working and non working DPS instances and successfully connect to the Directory Master using ldapsearch from the directory proxy server.
When I do ldapsearch I receive the following error on the second instances:
    ldap_simple_bind: Can't contact LDAP server
SSL error -12271 (SSL peer cannot verify your certificate.)

In these situations it's important to separate SSL level issues from LDAP issues. I've had good results using "openssl s_client" to investigate and debug SSL/TLS level issues. I point it at the LDAP server and it sets up a connection handling the SSL layers and giving lots of diagnostics about SSL and the X.509 certificates in use.
Try looking for things like whether the SubjectAltName and/or Issuer's CN contain the same hostname you are using to connect.
After giving you the diagnostics it will be waiting with your stdin/stdout connected to the application via SSL (which could make you think it's hanging). Since you're probably not going to be typing the LDAP protocol by hand you want to abort s_client at this point (or type something that Directory Server will reject as a LDAP protocol error).
You can get openssl from the usual places: blastwave.org & sunfreeware.com.
    Hopefuly this will help,

  • Multiple SAP SIDs on single Physical machine. Windows with Oracle

    Hi
I need bit information regarding this issue,
I am installing 3 SIDs on single machine
    1. ECC 6.0 EHP4
    2. Netweaver PI.
    3. Netweaver MI.
Operating System : Wiindows 2008 Server.
    Database: Oracleg 10.2.0.4 .
All done successfuly however i am not able to start all three servers at the same time, only one can be up at a single time.
    As per you recomendation
    1. I have 3 diffrent SIDs and unique instance number.
    2. However only single Listner there on my machine.
    2. Oracle Home is also a single.
Can you please advise what could be the exact Couse of my issue.
    Regards
    Gagan

    Hello Gagan,
    See note 562403:
    13. Do I require a dedicated listener for each database instance?
If you operate several database instances on a single node, only one
listener is required, even if the individual instances have
different Oracle releases. You must simply make sure that you use
the listener for the highest Oracle version that was installed
(downward compatibility). You can then enter all existing instances
in the relevant listener.ora. See the example for listener.ora in
         Note 98252.
If you nevertheless decide to use several listeners in specific
cases, refer to the procedure described in Note 153835.
You should create an Oracle_Home for each SID database.
    Regards,
    Rafa

  • SQL Server Reporting Services won't start - SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 on Windows 2008 SP2

All has been fine for some time, this server runs SQL and SSRS.
Recently reporting service says it starts, then stops.  No changes of which I am aware.
This is in the application log:
Service cannot be started. System.Exception: Default appdomain failed to initialize.
       at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.ServiceAppDomainController.Start()
       at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.ReportService.OnStart(String[] args)
       at System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase.ServiceQueuedMainCallback(Object state)
I've tried changing the account to a domain admin, just to see - but it doesn't help.
    Thoughts?  Help?

  • WL Instance versus Physical Server

I was under the impression that each instance of a WebLogic server in a cluster ran on its own physical
server. But now I've been told that you can have a cluster of WebLogic servers running on a
              single physical machine!
Is this advisable? Is it a common configuration?
To me, this seems to defeat the purpose of clustering.
              Dave

Yes, cluster load-balancing and failover will work for virtual 2 or n tiered architecture. Physical
tiering is irrelevant here for these software-based clustering behaviors. What physical tiering is
relevent for, though, is hardware robustness.

  • Printing to a Deskjet 1000 from a terminal services session (2003) on my XP laptop.

The printer is a CH340-64001 and it works fine on an XP laptop.  When an attempt is made to use it during a terminal services session it fails because Server 2003 does not have the drivers for the printer.
When I try to run the installation from the CD I get a message that the operating system is not compatible.
Is there any way to install the XP drivers to Server 2003 or does the printer need to be replaced with another model?

There isn't a way, that I know of, to get the printer's XP drivers to work with Server 2008. However, there is an alternate driver that you can try using. It's the Deskjet 990c driver. It's a generic inkjet driver that works with most inkjet printers. It should work with the printer you're using. That's really the only thing I can think of that might work.

  • Session control via terminal services

I have an application running like a dream using JSP and server side session control. One paricular user has an environment where all PCs are linux based and running a terminal service from a Microsoft SBS server.
These PCs are unable to maintain session when connection to the site.
Has anywone hit this problem before, is the any setting in the Microsoft to help this?
    Thanks for your help

I have checked that cookies are enabled. I can
implement URL rewiting but I was hoping for a simple
solution without needing to change the software. As
all other users are not having a problem.Maintaining a session involves passing an identifier between the client and the server. The identifier can be maintained on the client as a cookie, or the web component can include the identifier in every URL that is returned to the client. So clearly for whatever reason this is not happening. You need to either fix your application so URL rewriting is supported or find out why cookies are not working properly for these clients.
I am not skilled in ternminal services and was hoping
there was some configuration that coulod be tweeked.Try a Microsoft forum

You can do what you want to do just fine. Hyper-V / Windows Server 2012 R2 can use SMB 3.0 share instead of a block storage (iSCSI/FC/etc). See:
    Deploy Hyper-V over SMB
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj134187.aspx
There would be no shared disk and no CSV just SMB 3.0 folder both hypervisor hosts would have access to. Much simplier to use. See:
Hyper-V recommends SMB or CSV ?
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/d6e06d59-bef3-42ba-82f1-5043713b5552/hyperv-recommends-smb-or-csv-
You'll have however a limited solution as your single physical server being a file server would be a single point of failure.
You can use Storage Spaces just fine but you cannot use Clustered Storage Spaces as in this case you'll have to take away your SAS spindles from your R720 box and mount them into SAS JBOD (make sure it's certified). So you get rid of an active components
(CPU, RAM) and keep more robust all-passive SAS JBOD as your physical shared storage. Better then a single Windows-running server but for a true fault tolerance you'll have to have 3 SAS JBODs. Not exactly cheap :) See:

Alternative way would be using Virtual SAN similar to VMware VSAN in this case you can get rid of a physical shared storage @ all and use cheap high capacity SATA spindles (and SATA SSDs!) instead of an expensive SAS.
    Hope this helped :)
StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.
