Advanced dreamweaver and php question
Hi I have a portal type of website for hairdressing and
beauty industry.
I am wanting to know if it is possible to have one register
form so that the the user can use more than one area:
Register for Directory/Classifieds - free registration and
use except for banner advertising
Register for Article Manager - free registratiion and use
Register to Search CV's - free registration and paid service
on a time limit
Register to place Job Advert & Search CV's - free
registration and paid service on a time limit
Register to place CV online for employers to pay and search -
free registration and use
I am currently using radio buttons to have all listings
inactive until approved by me to then change to active. Users on
registration can list their CV, Job Ad and Article but won't be
shown live until then. Job Ad, CV Search is a paid feature so I was
thinking of having session variables assigned to them.
I also have a radio button for the Job Ads and CV's that they
can hide or show public so that it is only shown live when they
need it to be.
Lastly I was going to have a radio button for expired or
notexpired so that when someone has registered and can still log in
to the system if it is expired there will be a note saying to renew
payment.
I know this sounds a lot but I would love that there is one
registration for customer convenience, one may want to place a
listing, article and search for CV's.
Lastly I am allowing the jobseekers to place their photo
portfolio of their work e.g. hairdoo's, make-up etc.
I want to allow all viewers to search and see these ( I will
try to watermark them for copyright ), but when they click on the
link they have restricted access to the CV until they pay.
I hope somebody understands what I mean, I guess I need to
restrict acces depending upon registration type and what would be
available to them.
Thanks for your time.

Not with that server behavior. You would need to set access
levels based
on what a user is allowed to see. Level 1 for basic access,
level 2 for
a slightly higher level, and so on. If you want to have
different codes
for each type of access, you would then need to code all your
conditional statements by hand.

It depends how you get acknowledgment that they have paid.
You already
know the current access level and user id, so use the payment
acknowledgment to trigger an update to the higher access
level.

How to create a dynamic newsflash using dreamweaver and PHP
Hi there,
I would like to create a dynamic newsflash using dreamweaver and PHP in that the newsflash will be pulling information from a MySQL database. The newsflash should also have a link to view more information about the piece of news a user wants to know more about. Which tools do I need to use in dreamweaver and how's the procedure to go about that. Any advice is highly appreciated. Thanx in advance!I think you´ll need at least a MySQL table with the following columns:
- id (primary key, int, auto_increment etc)
- news_headline (varchar)
- news_teaser (text)
- news_content (text)
What I´d personally add are columns such as:
- news_date (date or datetime)
- news_external_link (varchar), if a "read more..." link is supposed to navigate to an external URL rather than displaying the contens of the "news_contents" column.
Based on such a MySQL table it should be easy to use Dreamweavers standard Server Behaviors to create the usual datalist.php, insert.php, update.php and delete.php documents, and there are numerous tutorials out there which will teach you how to do that.
Am I right when assuming that you´ll also need to know how to automatically pull, say, the 5 most recent news records from the database ? -
Database setup with MySQL and PHP question
Hello all,
I recently had a problem getting a report to work for a site I was updating. This site is written in PHP with a MySQL database. The application is to track customer calls to auto repair stores. The database has a lot of foreign keys because they wanted to update information in only one spot and have multiple records be updated all at once. So, I've got all the information from individual calls saved in the call_log table, and have foreign keys to reference information in other tables (for example this table lists what store received the call referencing the store table). If a store changes locations, they want to have reports automatically update with the new address, connection to conversation number, etc.
In one of the responses to my question on how to get this report to work, I was told that this could be done without using foreign keys (by Normalizing the database using mapping tables). I am still a newbie to MySQL, and after looking though a lot of manuals, tutorials, and forum posts, I am more confused now than ever.
I got the report to work using the foreign keys, but I would like to learn what I should have done with the database (and how to get the information displayed).
So for example one report would be displaying the following:
Store Reason for the Customer Call
breaks oil change shocks tune up total calls
5636 - Bloomington 2 4 0 2 8
8875 - Duluth 1 6 4 8 19
with links on the store name to pull up the information on that specific store. How would I change the database (listed below) to do this without foreign keys? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
call_log (table that contains the following:)
call_id
conv_number
date
camp_type (foreign key to the campaign table so it displays the campaign_id)
reason (foreign key to the call_reason table so it displays the reason_id)
location (foreign key to the store table so it displays the store_id)
associate
call_summary
trainig_issue (foreign key to the training_points table so it displays the training_key_id)
visit_closed
example (foreign key to the example_type table so it displays the example_id)
campaign (table that contains the following:)
campaign_id
campaign_name
campaign_promotion
campaign_coupon
campaign_startdate
campaign_enddate
call_reason (table that contains the following:)
reason_id
reason
store (table that contains the following:)
store_id
store_number
store_address
store_city
store_state
store_postalcode
store_name
store_phone
store_email
store_mgr
training_points (table that contains the following:)
training_key_id
key_issue
policy
example_type (table that contains the following:)
example_id
example_name
example_image
Thank you very much.Frankly, that is way to much of a question to be answered in detail on a forum... There's a lot involved and a lot of general database understanding required. I would highly recommend:

CMS for Dreamweaver and PHP with MySQL
Hello
I am at a medium level with Dreamweaver MX and 8. I have
created a dynamic website running PHP and MySQL. The site sells
luxury yachts (resales). What I need is a simple, not too custom
code heavy content management system to allow the client to update
dynamic text areas and upload images via a web browser (IE7 PC).
The site needs the ability to input new boats, and delete sold
boats (flush out the database items).
Has anyone got a recommendation for some CMS software,
preferably Mac OSX PPC and running on a server under linux.
I don't mind buying it, in fact rather do that than risk
shareware going forward.I have the exact same need. Looks like nobody had any
suggestions for the original poster. Perhaps someone can make a
recommendation this time? I too am looking for a commercial
product, rather than open-source. -

Advanced Formatting and Positioning Question
I have an image that I want to display at the bottom of every invoice page. I run into a problem when the invoice goes over 1 page. The image is displayed in the middle, or at the top, depending on the number of lines. I've tried to anchor my image, but that means my image is displayed at the end of every page.I've tried the last page option as well, which leads ot my image on being displayed at the end of the document.
Any ideas?Hi,
I've similar issue. I need to print footer text at end of every page. I do not want to use footer due to some other requirement in my template.
Instead I am looking for 'ANCHOR'. Could you please let me know how did you anchor your image to get displayed in every page?

Pratul. -

It is quite easy to do simple things with CSS, but it's very
powerful,
and has a long learning curve. Keep at it, and you'll get
there in the end.

I'm not a big fan of ADDT (Adobe knows my opinions, because I
have told
them directly). I would like to see how ADDT develops before
committing
to writing about it. As for ColdFusion, I experimented with
it a long
time ago, but decided I preferred to improve my knowledge of

Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 with ASP coldfusion and PHP search?
I am working through Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 with ASP
coldfusion and PHP with the intent of creating a data base site
that primarily requires a search engine on the index page. The
search page in the book uses specific search criteria ensuring that
there will always be a match to the data base but I need to create
an input text field search engine. My Q, if there is no data within
the data base that match the variable, will it return with an error
requiring an argument in the code to respond to no matching data.
Hopefully there are comprehensive online recourses for these search
engines as they are so common. I am a complete newby to all aspects
of web development and code so it will need to be a thorough
explanation, an idiots guide. ANY HELP GREATLY APPRECIATEDRob,
Let me try to answer your questions, understanding that my
answers are laced with my experience and therefore my bias.
1. For the most part the SQL that you write for Access, MS
SQL or MySQL is going to be the same. I won't make that claim about
Oracle or PostgreSQL because I have limited or no experience in
those areas. To be sure when you head down the road with any DBMS
there are finer points on 'value added' features (to over simplify
things like MS SQL's Transact SQL), but for the most part when you
are pulling out, inserting or deleting records the SQL that you
write will be the same. In fact, I don't think I had to make any of
the SQL in the book different to deal with the back end db.
2. As for your host steering you away from MySQL, I don't
know why that would be. It is MUCH more stable and robust than
Access for web development. My research showed that you can use
MySQL just fine with ASP though that clearly wouldn't be
Microsoft's first choice.
3. A quick aside, the fact that you are building ASP on a Mac
would seem to indicate that you are developing on your production
server. That's never a good idea. Go local if you can. If you have
a newer Intel Mac you can use VM Fusion, Parallels or even Boot
Camp to run Windows in a virtual environment and develop there,
only moving your code to production when you are happy with it.
There is of course the fact that they two environments would not be
identical and you may need to change a few references, but it is
still a better practice than developing on your live site. Some web
hosts give you the ability to set up a subdomain. If yours does,
you could set one up with a duplicate of your site and develop
there.
4. Let me try to pull your 'rant-let' apart into two issue. I
begin with a question. I'm not sure what the Mac part has to do
with it. The primary language I work in at my day job is
ColdFusion. The majority of the most serious developers I know in
the CF world work on Macs. I am forced into the PC world because of
a cultural bias at the business school where I work. Having said
that, the only time I have felt there was ANY difference in the
tools, resources, choices I had was in any way affected by platform
was when Adobe still had not released Flex Builder 2 for the Mac.
Now that is behind us as well. This reaction of mine may be based
on the fact that Access never comes into play in the work that I
do. I regularly work with MS SQL and MySQL. (OK, so SQL Enterprise
Manager, the MS tool of choice to talk to MS SQL is Windows only,
but I only use that at the day job. But even there you can find
cross-platform, free tools like Aqua Data Studio to talk from a Mac
to MS SQL.) If I'm missing your point on the Mac, please let me
know. Since the advent of the Intel Mac I think it is hands-down
the best choice for a web developer. You can have Mac, Windows and
Unix all on one machine. It doesn't get any better (providing you
have the RAM :-)).
As for the security question, it is somewhat analogous to the
war on viruses and spyware. As the defenses get better, so do the
attacks. Most languages have developed functions for vetting user
input variables and best practices for building these things. It is
mainly a user education issue. When I took over the book you are
working out of, the one thing Jeffrey told me it needed was more
security. I did my best to put more in under the constraints of the
publisher. They didn't want the book to be any longer than the
previous version. I did my best to modify the code used to include
"string safe" functions and to add verbiage about the importance of
security. It was clear that I could not add as much as was needed
and I said so in the book. Much more is needed for a serious
treatment of the subject and not acknowledging that would have been
a disservice to the readers. I've been working as a developer for
over a decade and I don't know all there is to know about it. It's
a constantly changing field, just like all of web development. In
fact next week I'm going through a 2-day SANS Web Application
Security workshop in hopes of learning more. So at the risk of
sounding like an industry apologist, I don't think it's a
shortcoming of the development community. It is, as they say, "a
developing situation".

Scrub question for dreamweaver and flash
It has been forever since I have used Dreamweaver. I pretty much stick to print design with the exception of my own stuff, and my last few sites have all been done 100% in Flash. So I am in the process of putting together my new site in dreamweaver and have gone through a few hours worth of tutorials so think I am well on my way to getting something up.
My plan is to have a flash header that I am hoping can stay the same throughout the site. In other words, I dont want it to reload each time it goes to a new page, just keep playing. Is there a way for me to easily accomplish this? I am assuming this would be on the DW side, but if need be I can post on the Flash forums.
Now the one other thing, if its something that can be done but is a total nightmare to deal, or just too far out of my league since I havent used DW any time recently just let me know and I will come up with a new plan.
Thanks in advance! Thanks for the feedback. I knew going into those last sites what limitations flash brings to the table. Beleive it or not those two didn't really play into my thought process at all. I get very little traffic, most of it from people actually typing in the web address or linking to it from after I email it to them. It does on the other hand let me do some really creative stuff like a drag and drop resume that was modeled after a pantone book. Anyways, the big thing thing that is pushing me to go the the other direction at this point is mobile devices. Just driving me up the wall that I cant see my site on my iphone.
As far as the current project goes, thanks again. I think I will just skip the flash at this point, and I have already been thinking about a back up plan. No point in trying to figure out how to do something that is already dated.
Now for question two. I have a client that I do print work for that has a similar issue. He has a "music player" on his site that has a similar problem. Any time someone changes pages the song stops, and when the new page loads so does a new song. No idea what sort of technology/ program/ addons were used for this, but it drives me nuts anytime I go to his site. Would it be a similar process for the music player to conitinue pllaying? Meaning the frames? Would just like to be able to point him in the right direction so he can tell his web guy.
Thanks! -
Dreamweaver 8, PHP, and WebDAV problems
I'm not sure where else to post this but maybe some of you
folks out
there might know the answer.
My web server, running IIS 6, supports both Coldfusion and
PHP. I've
recently enabled WebDAV for two dreamweaver users who want to
transfer
files securely using the check-in/check-out/sync processes
built into
dreamweaver.
Unfortunately, they are unable to retrieve any PHP files. I
had the
same problem, I tried to sync the entire web site and all the
html and
image files came down fine, but ALL of the php files
generated the
following error:
/development/index.php - error occurred - An HTTP error
occurred -
cannot get index.php. Access Denied. The file may not exist,
or there
could be a permission problem.
File activity incomplete. 1 file(s) or folder(s) were not
completed.
Files with errors: 1
/development/index.php
the IIS log file shows an HTTP response code of 200 - no
error.
The file DOES exist, and the permissions are exactly the same
on all the
files, because I manually set the permissions on the web root
and had it
apply to all subfolders and files.
I can't figure out why it's failing to retrieve the PHP
files...
RickSounds like a MS IIS problem. See if this TechNote helps:

you're seeing, make sure to disable mappings for PHP, CFM,

How big is big is the questions? For a small site content

I would suggest you supply some more detailed information ie.
How many

As to how to learn, ask lots of questions and buy a good book
on HTML and

make up for a

A good start are the templates supplied by Dreamweaver and by

Missing File - Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 with ASP, Coldfusion, and PHP
On page 263 of Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 with ASP, Coldfusion,
and PHP by:Jeffrey Bardzel and Bob Flynn the file called
countryDetailXML.asp is missing. How can I find that file? Any
idea?
Thanks for your help.@citaiz,
That file is created earlier in the lesson in an exercise
starting on page 257. For the sake of the lesson, you can use
countryDetail.xml that is included in the lesson 09 start folder.
It is not important for this lesson that the XML is a static file
or one generated in real time from the database. The version of
Spry (1.4) that shipped with DW CS3 used XML data only. The current
version (1.6.1) can use JSON and HTML tables for the data source as
well. You can get the latest version of Spry for free at
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/,
including an extension to update your copy of DW to the latest
version.

You don't need any prior knowledge of Ajax or PHP, but you do
need to
know the basics of HTML and CSS. As I say in the
introduction, "You
don't need to be an expert, but you do need to have an
inquiring mind.
It doesn't teach the basics of web design, nor does it
attempt to list
every single feature in Dreamweaver CS3. There are plenty of
other books
to fill that gap. However, by working through this book,
you'll gain an
in-depth knowledge of the most important features of
Dreamweaver."

The book provides detailed coverage of the Spry 1.4 features
in
Dreamweaver CS3, which can be applied to any site. With minor
adaptation, you can also use Spry 1.6. It's important to
realize,
though, that the Spry/Ajax features in Dreamweaver CS3 do
*not* cover
asynchronous requests to the server. The ability to
communicate
asynchronously with the server was added in Spry 1.6. If it's
asynchronous server calls and responses that you're after,
your
programmer will need to dig around in the Spry 1.6
documentation on the
Adobe Labs site, and hand-code it.
The Spry features covered in the book are Spry Effects, Spry
UI widgets
(menu, accordion, tabbed panels, and collapsible panels),
Spry
Validation Widgets, and Spry XML Data Sets.

Yes. All the Spry techniques can be used on any web page. It
doesn't
need to be a PHP one.

Will there be future database support of mySQL and php 5.5 on the dreamweaver CC?
Will there be future support of mySQL and php 5.5 on the dreamweaver CC? I have seen various topics on this, and havent seen any answers on this as of yet. I feel it is very important to have this available, and not from some external company as an addon or something. I come from cs6 products, and am debating whether or not I should even join the creative cloud, or participate any further with Adobe products.
I have been a fan of Adobe for quite some time. However, if there isn't going to be any database tools within DW, I may decide to pass on the CC and comepletely hand code it all from now on.
Has anyone found yes or no answer to this yet? I am assuming there is no news yet, as the adobe posts I have read have no additional info other than they haven't updated the tools, thus removing them from CC.Mikaroni wrote:

I very much doubt that any future addition of DW will include any 'official' support for mySql database interactivity. CC hide the server behaviours this time around in an extention to be activated by the individual, its still available in CC but at the users own disgression, mySql is dead. You should be connecting and querying your databases using other methods like mySqli. Adobe have seen it fit to go in other directions and dispite the outcry of dropping the server behaviours there has been a deafening silence from Adobe. From that you can take it they think it is no longer an important part of their software package.
Mikaroni wrote:

I have not updated to CC because it contains zero that would be of importance to my workflow. The more experienced a code writer you are the less DW has to offer. Any serious code writer would not miss DW if it went out of business. Fireworks is more important to me which LOL is going out of business...go figure. I think the Adone execs are screwed up snorting cocaine or something. I'm not really even sure why I use DW, maybe out of habit.
Certainly hand coding for database connectivity and querying is the ONLY way to go if you are not interested in third party extentions because continuing to use the current available server behaviours is a backwards step.
