Advice needed on buying iphone as gift

I went to apple store, they do not want to sell iphone to me unless I sign AT&T 2 years plan. I thought AT&T has locked the phone and users must subscribe in order to use it. Why Apple store still not allow me to buy?
Please advice, if I want to buy online iphone for my brother, do I or my brother have obligation to sign out AT&T plan?
One more advice needed, I found the shipment takes weeks, do I have option to arrange for self-collection?
My brother birthday is coming soon, I need above advice urgently.
Thank you very much

I'm guessing English is not your first language. It's possible that you misunderstood them. Apple Store employees won't refuse to sell you an iPhone and you don't have to sign up for service in the store.
Well that's not entirely true.
Apple Stores have been instructed not to sell you an iPhone if any of the following is true:
• You state that you will not be signing up with AT&T.
• You do not have an ID from a US state, also indicating you will not be activating with AT&T
• You do not have a credit card
For example, I've seen US Apple Store managers refuse to sell iPhones to European residents because of the AT&T lock-in.

  • So if I want to buy an non-music app I need to buy an iTunes gift card?

I bought gift cards for myself and my family so we could download apps onto our iPads.  The gift cards had the the little triangle emblem just like the App Store icon on our iPads.
But nowhere on the iPad App Store is there a method to redeem the gift cards.  Phone Support just told me that I have purchased the wrong gift cards and that they are non-transferable.
So if I want to buy an iWork app, I must purchase an iTunes gift card?  But I don't want to download music and I don't select the app from iTunes...I select it from the App Store
And if I buy the gift card with the App Store triangle emblem then that card is only good at the online retail store and not for apps?
It seems somewhat absurd to have 3 virtual storefronts (App, Online Retail, iTunes) that cannot take each others gift cards.  Why can't Apple be as easy as Amazon?  One gift card works everywhere.
Is there any way to use our gift cards to download for-pay apps?  Or should I recover my money by disputing the purchase with my credit card company?

    Thanks for your reply.
I took my iPad, my case #, my iPhone, and a printout of this thread to my local Apple store. What ultimately worked was to redeem the online store gift card through my iPhone Passbook and use the money to buy an iTunes gift card. Then I redeemed the iTunes gift card.
Not sure this will work with the gift cards I gave as presents and, if I lacked an iPhone (like my mother lacks) then I would have been S.O.L.  Apparently the emailed online store gift cards are incompatible (no GCA code). Something for Apple to fix. Not having Passbook on iPad is another thing.
    Thanks again for the help

  • Advice needed on buying an external hard drive

    Hello everyone,
I have a very old pc packed with photos that I'd like to store in an external hard drive but still with the option of uploading them onto my shiny Mac.  I'm not sure if that's a straightforward deal or I need to buy/know something specific?  Basically, I'm unsure if the files on my pc will be read by the Mac.  I know you can connect the Mac to the pc directly but I checked and the pc is way too old for that easy option.
Apologise for my total untechyness but if you could keep any replies basic I'd be hugely greatful!
Many thanks for your time and patience,
    Michelle

    Hello flymissy,
You don't say which shiny new Mac you have or the Operating System.   Suggest you pop it into your profile when you have a minute.
I'm pretty sure someone will come along in a minute but if not the ideal place to put this post is in iLife (iPhoto) columns.   The reason I say that is because people with specific knowledge hang out there and I get the feeling that your old computer is not a Mac ... and I am unsure if the transfer won't therefore want special care.
The external HD will be needed for you to utilise Time Machine with your new Mac and it can be partitioned to have a separate section for your photo library.  The actual model is a subjective question.   I use WD equipment and have one with twice the capacity of my machine Hard Drive.

  • Major advice needed with ATT / IPHONE / MICROCELL misleading/doesn't work

I'm sorry if this is a little off topic, but I need some advice.
I've been battling ATT since thanksgiving week. I moved into a house (checked the coverage map before moving, and saw I was in the clear)
I have no service here. NOTHING. I had to use a verizon phone to call them, since Verizon actually works. They tell me they're working on it... weeks go by. A month, and another month of calling them and wondering what they could actually be doing to rectify my problem. Well about 2 weeks ago, ATT's RF engineer was hanging around my house for a couple of days. He told me they didn't even notify him about my problem until days before he arrived! So they were lying to me the whole time about trying to fix my lack of service. I kept asking them, "Can't you lend me a microcell until you fix what's wrong here?" They just said "No, you have to buy that and pay for it's service."
So it's now Feb 25th, and it's day II with my microcell. It shows 5 bars, but most of my calls are dropped, or I'm talking to someone that can't hear me. I emailed them last night asking if I could just be let go from this contract so I can move on and get back to business. They will waive my fee if I give them my Iphone 4 which I've owned for 11 months. Doesn't this seem a little strange??
I mentioned how I've lost many clients and a lot of money due to the fact that they think I'm ducking their calls because I don't receive them unless I drive 2 miles from where I live.
Again, today I talked with the service rep and they will not budge. Is there something in the contract that would help me out? Even the RF engineer/tech told me there is nothing they can do (other than putting up more towers!)
So I'm stuck in this nightmare with a phone that doesn't work, and paying for it. I still have a year on my contract and I just want out. The iphone was fun and all but I'm done with att and their ransom fees.
    Can someone help me?
Again...sorry if this isn't specifically an apple related post, but I don't know of another reputable place to ask advice

As you know, this is a user-ro-user iPhone tech support site. Neither Apple or AT&T participate here. The only way you can resolve your reception and service issues is through AT&T - no one here could possibly fix this. AT&T does provide free MicroCell service in some known poor coverage areas.
You can try some basic troubleshooting steps as described in the User Guide - Restart, Reset, Restore - but I doubt there is a problem in the phone itself.
IF you're not getting anywhere with AT&T, file a complaint with the FCC. Did the AT&T coverage map showed coverage in your area before you purchased the phone? You might want to get a lawyer to help.

  • Urgent: Advice needed for buying my first RAID

    Hi,
I am looking to place an order today as I have a pile of editing to get through - so I would love to hear your recommendations!
First of all I am a networking and RAID newbie so don't go all acronym and geek-speek-tastic on me or I won't have a clue what you are talking about. Seriously I don't know my NAS from my elbow!
    My requirements are:
    1. Suitable for working with HDV
    2. 2TB of storage
    3. Must work with PowerMac G5 2GHz Dual (later model)
    4. Must support RAID 5
    5. RAID must be controlled by hardware (on RAID box or via PCIe card)
The following have been suggested - has anyone used them?:
    Opt1: http://www.enhance-tech.com/products/desktop/t4_cr.html
(Would probably need to put an eSATA card in my Mac but RAID control is on the box.
Only goes to 80MB/sec - is this good enough for working with ProRes 422? I am looking to convert my HDV to ProRes 422 before output to mpeg2 as I believe this can give better results.)
    Opt2: http://www.g-technology.com/Products/G-SPEED-eS.cfm
(Would need to put a RAID controller in my Mac so not so good for connecting to other Macs.)
But I found this and was wondering if it was also suitable (as its cheaper!):
    Opt3: http://www.thecus.com/products_over.php?cid=11&pid=28&PHPSESSID=091b7808cfa54754 383932fc512ea056
(Would connect by 1Gb/sec ethernet to my Mac. RAID controller on the box. Someone said stay away from ethernet but I don't understand why?).
Any advice gratefully received. I need to make a decision real quick!
    Keep it mellow, B.

It appears that you need to step back and rethink your business. Heck, we don’t even know that you have a business. What you’re up to might just be personal editing. So I apologize if what I’m about to say overestimates you or underestimates you.
    FORMAT
You say, “suitable for working with HDV”, but you don’t say whether you MUST work with HDV. As others in this thread have pointed out, HDV is a “poor man’s Hi-Def”. It compresses images so diabolically in Long GOP that image quality suffers, and, as Shane points out, “the long GOP format is very complex and takes a LOT of time to do things.”
The other extreme is recording and editing in 1080i/p at 4K. Very few people in this world demand extreme quality. So, the best format overall is DVCPro HD. Today, DVCPro HD cameras cost only about a third more than the next nearest HDV. What’s more important, to me, is that DVCPro allows you to move away from having to use tape at all. It’s the year 2008 (almost). Tape is over. If it’s too late to sell your camera and switch, then so be it.
    STORAGE
You say, “2TB of storage”. For HD work, that’s a bare minimum. My recommendation is to get a 4-tray or 5-tray box with room to grow, even though the extra trays will remain empty your first 6-12 months.
Buy an empty enclosure that you can populate with your own drives. That way, you can use 1TB bare drives. (Don’t buy anything smaller.) You can put together a stack of 5 1TB drives in an eSATA RAID box for less than $2,000.
    RAID
You say, “PowerMac G5 2GHz Dual...via PCIe card”. You mean PCIx card. PCIe is for Intel Macs.
You write, “I want RAID (esp. RAID 5... If a drive fails I want to simply be able to swap a new drive in, restore, and be under way again.” But several of your comments indicate that you really don’t need in-line failsafe. For that reason, let me recommend mirroring or something even simpler: a backup drive.
JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) treats each drive in your stack as a separate volume. So, what you see on your desktop is Drive_01, Drive_02. If you subtract the cost for the RAID controller (in the box or in your PCI slot), you can afford to buy TWO plain JBOD boxes, and maintain one as redundant. That satisfies your, “If a drive fails I want to simply be able to swap a new drive in, restore, and be under way again.” In fact, you can skip the “restore” part.
Ken Summerall wrote: “If you are shooting HDV then you have the tapes, those are your backups. If a drive goes down you recapture.”
You responded, “that is not the same as having redundancy of data - and simply being able to swap in a new drive and do a restore.”
You make it sound as though you expect this to happen once a week. It won’t. Backup is good enough. That kind of “time saved” once every year or two isn’t worth it.
    SATA vs. FIREWIRE
Again, it’s the year 2008 (almost). Why would you want FireWire? Apple is being so stubborn, pretending that eSATA does not exist, because it has so much invested in its FW technology. But even Apple will be forced to come around in its next models.
While we’re talking about it, the claimed 80MB/sec for the Enhance T4 CR probably refers to the FireWire and USB interfaces, not to the SATA.
    ENCLOSURE SHARING
You write, “I also wanted to use the same RAID box with a Macbook Pro. So how would two Macs share the same RAID box?
What kind of sharing do you mean? If you mean that you and your partner can access the same video simultaneously in adjoining rooms, then you need FibreChannel. But, as Shane points out, “...a Fibrechannel setup, then an XServe Server...is NOT cheap.”
As Ken writes, “You can get a eSata card for your G5 and an ExpressCard for your MBP and share the box. With this you could get a Kona or Blackmagic card and capture your footage as DVCProHD and also have a way to monitor your HDV footage.”
    Amen.
    VENDORS
G-SPEED is reliable, with good support. Caldigit has a platinum reputation. Of course, there are MaxxDigital, Sonnet and Dulce Systems.
Enhance is the new kid on the block, and they are significantly less expensive with, in my experience so far, excellent build quality and quick (human) response. They manufacture in Taiwan, but they’re headquartered in -- and ship out of -- Lower California. So they don’t talk to you in Taiwanese as the cheap enclosure sites do.
    So there.

  • I will travel to California and i need to buy iphone 5s

I'm travlling to california next friday and i want to buy an i-phone 5s by AT&T with a nano sim card (not wirless) how can i get it from california and how much
? could i use it for two weeks then take it egypt ? and also could i buy more than one mobile or it's only one contract for one person ?

If you buy the phone directly from Apple and pay full price (NOT the contract price from AT&T) AND purchase an unlocked phone, then go to AT&T and get a SIM you can use it in the US and take it to Egypt. However, you will not get LTE (4G) service in Egypt, and if it ever needs to be fixed you will need to bring it back to the US.

  • Advice Needed: Activating Second iPhone

I'm about to activate a second iPhone on a new FamilyTalk account. The second iPhone will be used with a different computer/iTunes-username than mine, which the first iPhone was activated with.
If I activate the second iPhone using my computer, and my iTunes username, does that mean it will only be able to sync with my computer/user? Or is syncing separate from activation?
    Or put another way:
Which computer and/or iTunes-username should a second iPhone be activated with assuming it needs to be added to a FamilyTalk plan?
    Thanks,
    Chris.

Yes, AT&T cares about the phone numbers. Mine was an existing Family Talk account, and I just had to convert one of the lines to an iPhone. ITunes did this just fine. If the second line already exists, and is on the family talk now, it will work from iTunes.
If you are setting up a brand new FamilyTalk account, I am not sure that iTunes is that sophisticated, hence the possible need to call AT&T, but you will find them very helpful on this. After all, they are getting a new customer.

  • Advice needed for buying an AGP card for MEGA 180

    Since 1 year I have a MEGA 180 with a SEMPRON 2500 processor, 512 MB DDR RAM, Lite-On DVD-R/W, Hauppauge PVR-150 running MediaPortal 2.0.0.0.-RC4 and it rocks!
I am not so happy though about the TV-output of the integrated GF4MX that came with the nForce2 chipset. I would like to disable this and insert a low profile, passive cooled nVidia-6200 with 128 MB-DDR. I am a bit worried about the power requirements of the card and the juice that the power supply (200W ) can deliver. Is it safe to use this card or should I adjust my demands? I am using the system for media purposes only, e.g. recording and watching recorded TV, watching movies and playing music. MediaPortal requires a DirectX-9 compliant card, DirectX-8 also works but with video artefacts. Gaming is no requirement.
Can anyone please advice what to do  ???
    Thanks in advance, Leo

  • Video intensive work on Mac Pro? Advice Needed

    Hi everyone,
I've been originally saving up for a while now for an iMac 24" as it offers the best specification price wise. But now I leaning on the Mac Pro and therefore need some advice.
I know that there are alot of posts on advice - need to buy mac etc. so therfore I would really appreciate if I am afforded some help.
I am mostly going to do ALOT of video encoding (via handbrake) and I am looking for the best configuration available to achieve lowest waiting time.

I think you should go back and look at the other threads with advice, your budget. There is "ideal" and "affordable."
Will it pay for itself in 24 months so you can afford the next revision at that time?
    Start with an 8-Core 3GHz.
Add a Port Multiplier controller and two drive cases, 5 drives each, nearly 400MB/sec RAID.
    Throw in 8GB RAM.
Add in costs for software upgrades, two sets of backups, four internal 500GB drives.
Seagate has 750GB, as does WD. Hitachi has their $450 1000GB monster.
Give yourself time to build, test, and optimize your setup, and expect to change it over time as you learn more.
Can't afford that? then trim the 8-core. But Apple has shown how efficient next generation applications already are for video when it comes to 3GHz 8-core Mac Pro.

    Hey,
I need to buy iphone 4s. In Apple website it says it costs only 99$ !.
If I pay 99$ can I really own it?!
    Please help

You can look this up as easily as anyone here:
Or get iPhone unlocked and contract-free
    Unlocked$549.00In Stock
The unlocked iPhone works only on supported GSM networks, such as AT&T in the U.S. When you travel internationally, you can also use a micro-SIM card from a local GSM carrier. The unlocked iPhone will not work with CDMA carriers such as Verizon Wireless or Sprint.

All I can say is that I REALLY like my Touch 4th gen because I have all sorts of capabilities in a small form: e-mail, web browsing, news, weather, books, magazines, etc. etc.  Plus lots and lots of apps out there, including so many free ones.  I use the Cloud a lot so it's great to have everything sync'd to my MacBookPro (e-mail, Evernote, Pocket, etc.)
It would be easier, though, to do some of this, especially magazines, on the iPad mini, but, again, I love the small size of the Touch.
As for the 5th gen instead of the 4th, the fifth has Siri and the 3D feature in maps, which are great.  And I'm sure it's a lot faster in iOS 6 than the 4th gen.  And cool colors!
    Don't know if this helps . . .
