AE Composistion Settings for DVCPRO HD footage?

Slightly unrelated but giving it a shot anyways .
I have some DVCPRO HD footage. Here's the clip settings for it (digitized using Final Cut Pro).
Vid Rate: 23.98 fps, Frame Size 960 x 720, Compressor DVC PRO HD 720p60, Data Rate 5.5 MB/sec, Pixel Aspect DVCPRO HD (720p60).
In After Effects, what should my composition settings be? Or should I be going for a specific preset? Using After Effects 6.0, doesn't have a DVCPRO HD preset.

I'm not familiar with any of the formats, nor how they compare with each other when put side by side. I'm guessing whatever I get from my After Effects composition would be compatible with what's in my FCP timeline. I'm actually asking this on behalf of the editor who is also new to these new HD-related formats. Not exactly sure of his timeline settings, but when he puts in his DVCPRO HD footage, there's no rendering required. So I guess Final Cut's DVCPRO HD preset settings? If FCP has such a preset that is.
Even better would be if I could somehow export a lossless clip that I could put into my FCP timeline and render out perfectly fine. Example i'm more familiar with: using clips with no compression in DV NTSC timeline.

Best Settings for Exporting DVD Footage in a Movie File

Hello,
I've been trying to find the best settings for exporting DVD footage into a movie file from Adobe Premiere CS6.
I recently have been using my Magnavox DVD recorder for recording VHS tapes that I made long ago for shows and various other things, and no matter what, my footage doesn't come out as it needs to be.

I'm not expecting HD footage, I know these are tapes, but I'm playing the raw footage on my Xbox 360, and it looks better than this. I had to directly use the VOB files on the DVD for this, as trying to rip the files into an AVI or any other format with a DVD ripper didn't do anything, in fact it degraded the quality and made the audio not play in Premiere.
So what would be some good settings for exporting a sequence with DVD footage that is from a VHS into a movie file, preferably one that wouldn't degrade the quality?

First, read Why not edit mpeg http://tangentsoft.net/video/mpeg/edit.html to get a general idea of why a VOB makes a very poor source file (which is a renamed MPG, with some other stuff like menu screens)

Once you have a DVD compliant VOB on your timeline, and understanding that a standalone DVD recorder sometimes plays fast-n-loose with "compliance" per the DVD specification, about all you can do is export to standard or widescreen DV AVI and accept the fact that re-encoding an already compressed file is just not going to give great results

Settings for 1080/60i Footage

I'm in new territory here. I've previously only worked with 720/24p (Varicam) footage and am now working with some 1080/60i footage that originated in 1080/24p. It's a long story (see PS below if interested). Bottom line is we're stuck withi 1080/60i My question is this: The footage in FCP looks fine (for interlaced) but when I send it to compressor for DVD, the footage looks like it's low resolution (like it's 1/2 the amount of lines, but doubled) compared to everything else I've ever compressed. There are jagged edges everywhere... you can count the lines on certain objects in the frame... even/especially in progressive playback mode. It looks pretty bad. I've tried so many different settings and can't find a combination that works. Anyone out there with a solution?

LONG STORY: We shot our project using Sony's new XDCAM HD F350 in the 35 Mbs 23.98p mode. Well, FCP doesn't support that yet so we rented a F70 deck to record the HDSDI signal from the camera in 25 Mbs mode (which Apple now supports). Problem is: the HDSDI signal from the camera only comes in the 60i flavor. So now we have the situation mentioned above as our only workaround. Any other ideas? We're pretty late in our editing as it is due to all of this.

anyway, i am going to star with the basic questions, as in how are you exporting from FCP and how are you setting compressor?
you are down-resing your HD footage first, correct (in FCP)?
i am surprised that FCP cannot take in 23.98 @ 35 mbps, but this sounds like mpeg2 (since you are compressing from your camera).
i usually work on uncompressed 23.98fps and depending on the tape anywhere from 100 - 440 mbps and import to FCP no problem (although i still have to render it depending on how i am compositing).
anyway, let me know what and how you are setting both FCP on export and compressor to compress.

Sequence Settings for 5D Converted Footage

Hello,
Can someone please tell me what the sequence settings should be for 5D footage that has been converted to Pro Res? I've changed the frame rate to 29.97. I looked at the easy setup, but it looks like that is 24p Pro Res, so that is not matching up.

Not sure how much help I can be other than to tell you it can be done.
I have an older version of FCStudio (need to upgrade my machine to handle the latest version). Since it will not work directly with the HG20 I import my footage through Toast and convert to a format that FCP can use. It took a while but I managed to find some settings that worked without constant rendering.
The problem is that it's been a while and I cannot recall the exact settings.
I seem to recall the "DVCPRO HD (1080i60)" setting being the one. It was a Quicktime "preset" in Toast. I then set my project/sequence to the same setting in FCP and everything worked.

There are no export settings for DVCPRO HD

I've tried to export video from Final Cut Pro and After Effects in DVCPro HD 720. I've noticed that for any DVCPROHD format there are no quality settings in the "Compressor" box of the export window. What's strange is that on my old computer I did have those options.
Because I cannot specify 16X9 or 4X3, I have to render anything exported from After Effects into FCP.
I am trying to figure out if I am missing something on the install?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just read this week...and DVCPROHD may be in this category... When a quality side shows up in some codec...the slider has no effect on the quality of the video. It just shows up... I've seen a quality slider show up when using the AIC codec. The slider has no effect on the video
DVCPro HD 720 doesn't have a quality slider. And why would it...HD right. And if in some program it does show up, I bet it does nothing.
What problems are you having with aspect ratio 4x3, 16x9. If you trying to set aspect ratios in Compressor and not getting what you want, it can be done. If your changing from one to another there is some math to do. And sometimes you have to crop off some of the video.

Correct settings for DVCPro HD capture

I shot a short film on an HDX900 in 1080i 24P/60. Looking at the choices for capturing into my FCP 4.5 HD, the easy setup wants to capture at:
Frame Size: 1920X1080 HDTV 1080i (16X9)
29.97 fps (grayed out)
Anamorphic: 16X9 unchecked
Digitizer: (Missing) DVCPro HD (1080i/60)
If I switch the frame size to DVCPro HD 1080i/60 the resolution changes to 1280X1080 and it can't be modified.
Question 1: Was I supposed to trust the Preset here and don't change anything?
Same issues with the default Sequence Preset. It wants:
Frame Size: 1280X1080 DVCPro HD 1080i/60
29.97 fps (can be changed)
Anamorphic 16X9 is checked
Field Dominance: Upper(Odd)
Timecode Rate: Same as editing timebase
Renderin 8-bit YUV
Question 2: Is this correct in matching the captured footage?

I trust them...I just find it odd that the defaults for capture and editing are different. Why is 1280X1080 the default for the sequence? Why am I changing 60i(59.94 I'll assume) to 29.97?

Best settings for 1080p 24fps footage

Hi all,
Shooting great stuff at 1080p 24fps with a Canon DSLR. My audio is 48 at 24bit. I am wondering what my best settings would be for:
1) Full size, full quality
2) A more manageable size (50%?) at full quality
I realize that the end use matters. I am shooting webisodes, so they will wind up on my own website as lightbox videos and eventually on sites such a YouTube.

It's about efficient and fast workflow, not about quality.
But, FYI, you can't see true video quality on your computer screen. Put it on a professional production monitor, and use video scopes to see a difference.
The image quality is not what is the issue here. It's file management. ProRes HQ makes a very large file size, stresses your system out more, and gives you no extra advantages. XDCAM is a Long-GOP codec, which stresses your system out more, but you keep small file sizes. ProRes 422 (or ProRes (LT)) will give you a good balance between the two, and help your CPU, data pipes, hard drives, RAM, etc handle the very taxing data flow of video streaming in RT that is desired for video editing.
Long-GOP formats will require more rendering (less RT performance), and when you do render, they will have to "conform", making things fie the Long-GOP frame structure again. When you export, it takes longer, due to the specific and complex arranging of specific types of frames in proper order due to the Long-GOP format. Compressor transcodes will take much longer to perform.
Again, it's about efficient and fast workflow, not about quality.

Export settings for DV wide footage

I'm having trouble with aspect ratio when exporting a video project (fat faces, skinny faces):
footage - shot with HV30 in DV Wide format
video clips show in Project Panel as 720 x 480 (1.2121)
intended use - Vimeo posting
Editing - PremProCS5 running on beefy Win7 computer
I'm stabbing around at various export choices/presets (H.264, QT, Windows Media)...is there a preferred choice?

Export at 854x480, using PAR of 1.0, is the first rule of thumb for SD widescreen for PC or web playback.
I just checked in Adobe Media Encoder CS6 and under H.264, there is a preset for Vimeo Widescreen SD and it specifies 640x360, so see if you have Vimeo presets and that will simplify life. Scroll way to the bottom of the list as they are alphabetical.
You may not have that H.264 preset in CS5, so here are the specs it shows:
640x360, Progressive
VBR 2-Pass, Target 2.00, Max 2.00
AAC 320kbps, 44k Stereo
Profile: High
Level 3.0
.mp4 file extension

Best FCP settings for 1920x1080 HDV footage @24fps

...shooting film on small community river with a Canon XH-A1...and want to work with cinematic style "beauty shots" So far I'm assuming that import presets in FCP should be set at AppleProRes 422(HQ)...although this taxes my processor...I will be doing simple graphics and project will be about 20 minutes in length. I'd love some opinions on what to watch for and how best to proceed from anyone who is familiar and has worked with this type of set up. Thanks a mil.

M2v settings for panasonic p2 footage (24p)

Hi.. I am just curious, since the original footage was shot 24p, do I want compressor's video format rate to be 23.98? or do I want 29.97?
This is going to DVD studio pro.
Also, can anyone explain to me how the average bit rate vs. maximum bit rate actually works?

I'm not sure if this is the same product you mentioned...but I've had luck to recover deleted files once with Data Rescue II.

Files deleted, trash emptied, and other data had been written. But, this was able to pull back some trashed image sequences. With the P2 footage, you're probably dealing with much more material...but if you haven't tried this version, it's worth a shot.

what are the exact sequence settings for cutting 1080i60 footage in FCP? From my understanding; it's 1920 X 1080 with 59.94fps. But what fields should render first; upper or lower? I also need to know this info for using After Effects; I need to know the specifications so I can render my animations.

Open your preset in FCP or check your sequence settings and all that information will be there.

Proper sequence settings for importing Canon Rebel T2i footage

Greetings, all. I searched the forum and didn't find this question answered elsewhere, so I thought I'd ask.
I'm using Adobe Premiere Pro CS4, version 4.2.1, and I'm trying to find the ideal sequence settings for the Canon Rebel T2i, which records in MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, with adjustable frame rate. I am running on Apple Mac OSX 10.8.2.
I've been editing with this footage for over a year now, and it's always been a struggle because I have to render all footage before I can even play it in Premiere. When first imported, the render bar above the timeline is yellow.
I'd like to see if I'm doing this incorrectly; to know if I have a simple sequence setting that's incorrect. What sequence settings should I use for my imported footage to start out green and not require a lengty render for video that isn't even edited yet?

Optimal Settings for Converting Sony AVCHD .MTS Footage for DVD Delivery

I am starting with footage from a Sony HDR-SR7 camcorder. Since iMovie is still kind of wonky with this, I am going to batch convert all my clips using the VeggieTools plug-in scripting for *Sony Vegas Pro* (under my Windows partition of my MacBook Pro). I can convert over each file into a new clip in a lot of different formats.
My goal is to *bring the footage over to Mac and edit it in Final Cut Express.* Eventually, I will be mastering and delivering on DVD (most likely through iDVD). And I am looking for guidance.
First, I have a lot of choices for the conversion format. But I am not sure what to use. I know that the original is upper field dominant and HD in size (16:9). I will eventually be going to standard DVD NTSC (with letterboxing top and bottom to fill up the format space of the 4:3 aspect ratio). And I assume that is lower field dominant.
Do I need to find some setting that lets me convert the footage to double the 29.97 fps rate while interpolating the fields? Or do I not have to worry about this? I am worried that bringing the size of the footage down will create some weird artifacts if this isn't taken care of first.
I guess the main question is, since I am looking to pretty much just edit these clips together and won't be doing much in the way of special effects, what's the best way or format to choose to *turn the HD footage into high quality SD footage* that I can quickly trim and string together *in Final Cut Express*...
Not sure if I gave enough info. I will be checking often in anyone wishes to try and tackle this one and needs more details...

OK my fault for not being clear on an extremely important point: I don't need anamorphic widescreen. Sorry to waste your brainpower on my lack of clarity. Mea culpa.
I intend to show this only on a standard definition TV from a standard definition DVD player. The "letterboxing" I spoke of is intentional on my part inside the standard def 4:3 frame. I will just let there be black bars at the top and the bottom.
So I don't need full super high resolution during this transfer (IF iMovie hadn't stopped recognizing my Sony AVCHD MTS camera after the first batch of video I collected, this wouldn't even be an issue. Been spending days on the forums trying all the solutions for the rest of my footage...).
But now that I have a workaround, I am just mostly confused about what to do about the field order (and thus, the frame rate) and the resizing (for convenience in size and playback speed). The original is upper first, and I am pretty sure that the QuickTime Movie I eventually make for iDVD should be lower field first (haven't tried tackling the can of worms of ideal MOV settings for an iDVD standard def disc yet).

4K footage to DVD: what are the best settings for exporting in Premiere Pro CC v7.2.2?

I am editing a big bunch of short 4K clips (XAVC in MP4) which will then go onto DVDs. The idea is to get as many of those clips on a DVD as possible. Using Premiere Pro 7.2.2 on Windows 8.
What I would like to know is whether I'm actually using the best possible settings for this case, because the video exported to MPEG2-DVD doesn't look that good. Or maybe it needs to be exported to a different format and rather converted to DVD format after?
The sequence setting are the following:
RED Cinema
Frame rate: 29,97 fps
3840x2160 (16:9)
Square pixels
The export settings I've been using:
MPEG2-DVD
Aspect ratio: 16:9
TV Format: PAL
Field order: progressive
Frame rate: 25
Video quality: 100
Bitrate: VBR
1, I've tried different bitrates, also setting minimum at 9, but this blows up the file size too much (as i mentioned, the idea is to get at many clips as possible on a DVD)
GOP: M - 3, N - 15 (haven't touched those)
Multiplexer: none (should i put DVD?)
I'm using maximum render quality
Have I given all the information?

As Ann has advised do not expect too much, you are going down a lot in quality.
Why are you also going from NTSC to a PAL output?
Premiere will drop frames to get from 29.97 to 25.
PAL DVD players read NTSC discs fine as long as they are region 0
Why are you trying to produce a DVD anyway?
A Bluray would be far better quality.
Also a minimum 9 is way wrong, c9.6 is the max in the spec and hence avoided as your system is trying to push the spec limits to close.
I used to use 6 - 7.5 - 8.8 in my VBR and they looked fine, now I am all HD.

FCE Export Settings for Youtube - SD and HD footage

I made a 7 minute video in FCE that combines photos and video shot in both SD and HD. I would like to upload this video to youtube, and I believe it needs to be exported to Quicktime movie first before I can upload it to youtube. I have researched this issue and tried many different export options, and the closest I have gotten still results in some black spots showing up during playback in quicktime. Can someone provide standard advice on the best settings for exporting from FCE in this situation?
I have FCE v. 4.0.1, QT v.7.6.9, and my movies were little movies shot from my Sony Cybershot camera and my Nikon D90 (some in SD and some in HD - by accident). Still pictures are included in the movie from both of these cameras as well.

The simplest way to produce good quality video for the internet is:-
1. File>Export Using QT Conversion.
2. The "Format" window should say, "QT Movie".
3. In "Use" select "LAN/Intranet" from the dropdown menu.
4. Click "Save" and when it has finished encoding, upload it.
Do not mess about altering audio settings, frame rates etc.
Using the above settings an 8 minute video would be encoded in around 20 minutes (depending on computer speed) and would be well under 100MB.
Is that too big?
