After Effects won't recognize videos compressed in H264?

When I import videos into After Effects the appear on the screen but only show up as a black screen for the duration of the clip. The videos are compressed in H264.

You need to be more specific! What version of AE? Running the trial? Where do those files come from? Are there other programs on the system that may have a hold on the relevant CoDecs? What are your prefs for hardware acceleration in AE? What system specs? Could be that things are busted on your system, could be that you are simply using crappy, non-standard compliant video from a cheap digital photo camera...

  • Mac after effects cs3 WONT RECOGNIZE .AEX FILES

    Hi,
I use a mac osx and I own a copy of Adobe After Effects. I have been playing around with it in the past few months and I have recently started installing plug-ins. The problem is, some of these plug-ins are .aex files, and when I put them in my plug-in directory After Effects won't recognize them. It will recognize .ffx and .plugin files, but not .aex. I have found out that .aex is for the PC version only and I think this is a very prominent design flaw because most plug-ins are in .aex format.
Is there any converter for .aex to .plugin? And will this problem be sorted in the next version of After Effects?
    Thanks,
    Reuben

PC and mac are completely different operating systems with different code requirements. There's no practical way for Adobe to write some kind of translator that will make PC plug-ins run in the Mac OS.
Some plug-ins are written for Power PC and not for Intel Macs. These also require different code. For plug-ins to work in both Intel Mac and Power PC Macs must be written in Universal Binary. This has nothing to do with Adobe and everything to do with the manufacturers of plug-ins.
If you're running on an Intel mac and want to use non intel plug-ins you'll have to run AE under Rosetta emulation. You do that by going to the applications folder and selecting Info for the AE app. You'll find a check box for Rosetta. This will make these plug-ins work, but AE won't run as efficiently and may not be as stable.
Most plug-in installers are aware of the OS and will not install on incompatible systems. In many cases installing a plug-in is more than just dragging the plug-in into the apps plug-in folder.
If you're copying from another system, one that you don't own, then you're violating licensing and most plug-ins will either run in demo mode with a watermark or will not run at all.
    Hope this helps.

  • Adobe After Effects CS6: Learn by Video

NOTE: This question is directed to Todd Kopriva.
    Hi Todd,
I figured this is a good way to get in contact with you, seeing how you are quite active in this forum.
This is regarding to the Adobe After Effects CS6: Learn by Video that you were a part of with Angie Taylor.
I have encountered a problem opening the .aep files in the "Project_Files" folder, I was prompted with the following error message "After Effects warning: 9 files are missing since you last saved this project."
When I try finding the missing images, it is not found in the folder or disc. Due to this problem, I cannot make full use of the video lessons.
I was wondering if you still have the images to the files in this video, and if so, would you kindly send it my way? I would be very grateful of your help.
    Thank you!

  • Mp4 from After Effects won't play on iPad Air

I have a series of mp4 vids - some are exported from Premiere, others, After Effects - CS6 Win7 x64.
They all play in iTunes, but the vids from AE won't play on the iPad.  Even when I sync them the iPad identifies them as unplayable.
Any ideas what could cause this?
    Thanks.

There's a million different things that could be wrong with your MP4 settings.  You'll need to post all the compression parameters for anyone to assess the problem properly.
The easiest solution, and one which will give you better quality video anyway, is to use Adobe Media Encoder to do your compressions, rather than After Effects.  It has iPad presets built right in, too.

  • Final Cut won't recognize video

    Hello,
I've been trying to capture some video onto an G5 iMac, OS 10.4.11, but whenever I go to log and capture, FCP won't recognize the video. Occasionally, an image will pop up and then freeze, but most of the time I'm just looking at the "preview disabled" window. The timecode will show up, but it will stick at one number instead of counting upwards when I hit play on the tape.
If I have Video Settings set to firewire and hit capture, I just get the beachball and have to restart the program. If I use "non-controllable device" I'll get a warning message that no video has been detected.
I've tried the very same setup--same scratch disk, same camera, same tape, same settings--using an iBook and it worked just fine. I recently upgraded to FCP 6, however I experienced this problem both before and after I upgraded. Actually, I managed to capture once after my initial upgrade, but then it stopped working again. This is a work computer and I've been told it has captured video in the past, although i've never seen it in action.
My only guess is that this is a hardware problem with the firewire ports? I've tried them both and neither work. If anyone has any other ideas about what the problem would be, I'd love to hear it.
    Thanks!

Go to Apple Menu > About This Mac > More Info > FireWire. Do you see your camera listed in System Profiler?
What format are you trying to capture?
Do your Easy Setup and Sequence Settings correspond to the format you are trying to capture?

  • QuickTime Files rendered from After Effects won't open

I currently have QuickTime version 7.6. Files that I download from elsewhere or that I view in the FireFox plugin online play just fine. However, files rendered from After Effects CS3 (I prefer MPEG-4 codec, but I just tried and Sorenson 3 won't do it either) will not play in FireFox's plugin and they won't open QuickTime when I double-click them in Explorer. They will only open in the QT player if I already have the player open. Otherwise, I have to open them in VLC. I much prefer the QT player and I don't want to have to open it first to view my files. Any thoughts on what's going wrong here? This has only started in the past month or so.
Other people can view the files just fine, it's just my computer. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling a few times now and have updated my video drivers, to no avail. I've also installed Avast! Antivirus and run a boot-time virus scan, but no lick there either.
    Error signature from Windows:
    EventType : BEX P1 : QuickTimePlayer.exe P2 : 7.60.92.0
    P3 : 496279cc P4 : QuickTimePlayer.exe P5 : 7.60.92.0 P6 : 496279cc
    P7 : 0000130d P8 : c0000409 P9 : 00000000

I wouldn't have a clue from here on, it could be anything. The key would be, if you could recall what changes were made to the computer during the time the problem surfaced. I'm not familiar with After Effects C3S but I'd disable it from loading at start-up if it does, and try QT again, but that's just a pure guess, based on the EventType error numbers, that are somewhat familiar with memory load

  • After Effects Creates Lag in Video

    Hi,
I am new to this forum and adobe after effects and im hoping you guys could help me out.
I created a couple of videos but after renduring them they lag unbelievably and in the preview as well. The videos are fine before i edit them im guessing the effects are screwing it up. What should i do? My computer is not very good its a dell latitude d620 laptop 3.25 gigs of ram (idk why its wierd) geoforce 7300 video card 2.16 ghz proccessor. My mom lost my camera so im taking it on a crap 3.2 megapixel camera from like the 80s but it doesnt lag before i edit it
so do i need a new computer? new camera? change some settings?
    please help thank you.

To what specifications are you rendering? The videos from the camera are definitely compressed, so naturally, due to their low data rates they will playback reasonably smooth. Of course that can never be the same, if you render out uncompressed from AE. Even much more powerful computers cannot sustain high data rates of uncompressed media - they fill up the memory until a certain point and it runs smoothly, but after that, it gets choppy because large blocks of data need to be constantly unloaded and new ones loaded again. Only compressing your output will change that, so tell us what you require and what version of AE you use and we may be able to advise.

  • After Effects doesn't recognize increased ram

I increased my ram from 2GB to 4GB. Windows XP recognizes the increase but After Effects 7.0 still shows only 2GB of ram. Is there a setting in After Effects that needs to be changed to recognize the additional ram?

Search the forums (or any other tech website) for "boot.ini" and "/3GB switch". It's a system setting, not an AE thing. And, before you are disappointed: AE will not use more than 3GB on Windows XP 32bit, because it won't allow more. It will only use 4GB un XP 64 or Vista 64.

  • After Effects Won't Import ANYTHING!

So I just got After Effects ( which I was REALLY looking forward to! ). However, after installation, I tried importing a few different video files, all with the same problem... AE8 crashes! It won't even import pictures! Anyone got any ideas?

Application Data is a system directory and should by default other programs to write data at the system level. You can verify so by checking the directories properties. Right-click, choose "Properties", then go to the security tab. There should be an entry called "SYSTEM" and it should have full access. if that's the case, then the only thing I can think of is some security tool (virus scanner, firewall) having a hold over the directory and files. Temporarily turning of this tool or adjusting its surveillance settings to not monitor certain file types and directories should allow you to rectify the issue. Perhaps such a thing was even the initial reason for your troubles...

  • After effects does not import video when I direct link from premiere pro.  Why not? how do i fix this?

I wanted to add some motion tracked text elements into a clip of a interview in my premiere pro cc timeline. I left clicked on the clips that i wanted to "replace with after effects composition".. so i clicked it to and it opens a new comp in after effects.. Only there is no video opened in the comp.. Theres nothing there. I cant figure out why it doesnt bring the video in? Its not in my project panel in ae.. and ive tried direct link by left clicking the clip and going through the menu.. Tried closing AE and then doing direct link. Tried opening AE first and then doing it.. Not working no matter how i try it.  Whats the fix?
Im using all CC products. Premiere is up to date, after effects is not. I will be updating it to see if that fixes the problem. As soon as I do. I will post a comment as to whether it fixed it or not. In the meantime i could use some help!

  • After Effects won't start Media Encoder

I'm trying to render from After Effects through Adobe Media Encoder, but the link will not work. I tried using Ctrl+Alt+M, and I tried opening it from the drop down menu. AE simply won't work with AME.
It worked before I upgraded to CC 2014, and I can still render out of AME through Premiere CC 2014.

Larchuck on another thread suggested this and it helped me as well. He was using windows 8 and I, 7, but it worked
Get Properties on the AME .exe
Under Compatibily Tab I checked "Run this program in compatibily mode for:" and selected windows 8
    Hit apply
    AME opens.
I went back to the Compatibilty Tab and unchecked "Run this program in compatibily mode for:" and I also clicked the button above it (Run compatibility troubleshooter)...went through its process and AME is woking again.
Turning it off again didn't work for me though so I'm leaving it on

  • After Effects won't import any animation presets from Bridge.

I just installed Creative Cloud.  It seems to be working fine, except that when I try to apply Animation Presets into After Effects through Bridge, it gives me an error message saying "Can't import file xxx.fxx: unsupported filtype or extension"
I'm not trying to import a "file" or anything.... simply trying to apply an animation preset to a video clip on an AE timeline.  Never had any issues doing this with CS5.  Anyone know what's going on?
    Thanks

    See this thread:
