After I upgraded to Firefox 4 on Windows XP, I was no longer able to print anything directly from a website except PDF files. I can print documents from any installed program on my hard drive. My printer is an HP LaserJet 1220

I edited my original question above to provide all the info that I can think of. It is very frustrating to no longer be able to directly print from a website except for PDF files. I can do a work around by copying a web page to Microsoft Word and then printing it but I don't understand why I lost a basic function. David Pollock

Thanks, Huntress, but it's not in More either. I'm talking about the genius button/atom icon that used to appear in the center/top part of the screen while a song plays in the music player, like in this image (I used to be able to tap the atom icon to create a genius playlist on my iphone):
Now, when I play a song, there is no atom icon/genius button like in the following image. I've already tried tapping where it used to be and it doesn't come back.

Lousy 'fan' noise after installing a new internal hard drive

Hi,
I installed a new internet hard drive to replace my corrupted hard drive. The new hard drive is WD 320GB. Somehow, i got it installed and work. I install leopard on it and it works well as far as this point. Now, I have a new problem. Before installing the hard drive, my iMac run very quiet. Now, as soon as I turn on my iMac, i can hear a very noisy and loud 'fan' sound. I do not know if it is hard drive spinning or one of the fan. I do not notice any weird sound except it definitely a very loud spinning fan sound. I do not have Apple Care or warranty with Apple. Any suggestion to isolate the problem pls ?
I use iStat Pro and have the following info:
- CPU fan : 800-900 rpm
- CPU and GPU temp : 40 - 60 C degree
- Hard drive fan : 5000 rpm
Another question is : when i take my old hard drive, i noticed it has 1 power cable, 1 SATA cable and 1 small cable with connect some kind of chip on my motherboard to a small chip on the right hand side of hard drive. It appears to me that Apple attached a small chip on the side of hard drive. And i do not know where to connect that wire to my new hard drive. So i just left it un-connected. Thought, i connect power cable and the SATA cable. Any idea what that wire used for ?

Thank for informing me the heat sensor. Basically, i can take the heat sensor out from my old internal hard drive and stick it on the new drive ? If so, how do i do it ? can i use any glue to stick heat sensor on new drive ?
Also, I just figure something. I opened the front cover, then run iMac. I noticed the noisy sound, i thought it might be the fan or the hard drive. So , i disconnect the fan power cable and restart the computer. Now, it runs very quitely. I can not hear anything noise as all. No thing. So i assume that the hard drive is not the problem. As soon as i plug back the power cable for the fan. The noise come back.
Is there a software to control the speed of the fan ? Using Istat, i have the following info :
- CPU : 42 C degree
- HD : 29 C degree
- GPU : 43 C degree
- Ambient : 22 C degree
- mem controller : 37 C degree
- CPU fan : 860 rpm
- HD fan : 5000 rpm
- Optical fan : 800 rpm

Can't get rid of items that are making hard drive sleepless

I have an Intel iMac with a dead internal drive. I'm now booting and running it off its backup clone drive, an external La Cie Firewire drive. But the drive is constantly cycling, spinning down and spinning up, even when all apps are closed and the iMac seems (and should be) asleep (if the internal drive was doing this and i couldn't hear it, no wonder it died).
I looked in Activity Monitor to see what it's up to when it's supposed to be asleep, and see some repeated entries from outdated stuff- Lexmark Network Services (from a printer i no longer have) and Palm Desktop Background, from a Palm program i haven't used since 2006 and thought was de-installed.
The thing is, i can't seem to get rid of them. It's difficult to pinpoint their exact source thru Spotlight (or Inspect in Activity Monitor), and when i throw what i can trace of them in the trash, i can't empty it, i get a message that says "USB Transport rsrc is in use".
How can i get rid of these items, which are obsolete and might be what is keeping the drive cycling?
I removed a bunch of unneeded items from Login Items, but Lexmark one isn't there. And what is "Transport Monitor" (shows in both Startup Items and Activity Monitor)? Can i delete it from Login items?
Energy Saver settings seem fine- it's set to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity. It's just not going inactive.
Suggestions?
I'm having to shut the iMac down whenever i walk away from it to keep from hearing all that cycling from the drive (and wondering what it's doing to the drive).

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode, like if it still changes in 5-10 minutes...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it maybe some 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. It also may be Video Card or Airport going bad.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

Restoring from Time Machine to an external hard drive

I had a hard drive crash on a MBP and am using DiskWarrior to try and recover it. DW has been running for over 48 hourse and says "speed reduced by disk malfunction: 3,177" (the number increases every few minutes) The DW folk tell me to give it another day or two. Knowing that I would need to replace this hard drive anyway, I took a brand new hard drive from another MBP and put it in a hard drive enclosure. (I put a SSD in that MBP and gave it to my daughter who is out of state so I don't have access to it anymore.) I then used that hard drive to boot up a different MBP (recall the original one is still trying to recover with DW) which was connected to another hard drive where my TimeMachine back up resides. This MBP opens with the welcome screen like you get on a brand new computer and asks me if I want to transfer data from a different computer or do a restore from TM. So I say yes to restore from TM. After that finishes, I then should have a hard drive that is identical to my last TM backup, yes? Instead, I discover that tons of data is missing. When I go back and look at that data on the TM backup, it appears to be all there. So why did it not install on the new hard drive? Does the fact that I was booting it as an external hard drive make a difference? Or is it a problem that the MBP I am using is one year newer and is a 17" whereas the TM backup is from a 15" machine?
I need to get this 15" MBP up and running but don't want to interrupt DW from doing its thing. (now up to 3,194 in the disk malfunction count, whatever that means). I am just a little concerned that TM may not have everything I need to restore the drive and my failure to successfully restore on my first try doesn't help!

Maybe. I'm assuming you left everything selected on the Transfer Your Information window?
Does the data that was transferred seem current? If not, had you previously done a full restore to the old MBP, or erased it's internal HD? If so, backups done after that may be treated as if they were from a different disk, and the area circled in red becomes a "pop-up" menu where you can select the one you want; you may have transferred from the older set.
It's also possible some data on the old Mac's internal HD was damaged by whatever went wrong with it, and that stuff was backed-up. Were there any odd messages during the transfer?
Try to Repair the backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting. If that finds and fixes things, start the new MBP up from the Snow Leopard disc, erase the drive, install OSX, and let Setup Assistant transfer everything again.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Installing new RAM and hard drive and installing mac os x

Hello all.
I have a new hard drive and ram for my macbook that I plan on installing. Would it be okay to install both at the same time and then install Mac OS X from the install discs? Or, would I need to install the hard drive first, install Mac OS X, and then install the RAM?
What do I need to do?
Also, when installing MAC OS X from the discs with a new hard drive, will it allow me to do a fresh install as soon as I enter the disc? Or, do I have to restart the computer with the disc in and hold down the C key?

Congratulations on installing the RAM and Hard Disk Drive. Now you need first to format the HDD, then install the OS, and restore from backup.
Formatting, Partitioning Erasing a Hard Disk Drive
• With computer shut down insert install disk in optical drive.
• Hit Power button and immediately after chime hold down the "C" key.
• Select language
• Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
• Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
• Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
• Click on Options button
• Select GUID Partition Table (Intel Macs)
• Click OK
• Select number of partitions in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note 1: One partition is normally preferable for an internal HDD.)
• Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
• Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
• Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
• Select Erase tab
• Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
• Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
• Click Erase button
• Quit Disk Utility.
Open installer and begin installation process.
Installation Process
• With computer shut down insert install disk in optical drive.
• Hit Power button and immediately after chime hold down the "C" key.
• Select language
• Open Installer and begin installation.
• Select installation option
• Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Optional: Check box to install X11 (Tiger and later).
• Proceed with installation.
• After installation computer will restart for setup.
• After setup, reboot computer.
• Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
• Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
• Select First Aid in main panel.
• Click Repair Disk Permissions.
• Connect to Internet.
• Download and install Mac OS X 10.5.6 Combo Update (Leopard) or
Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo update (PPC) (Tiger)
Computer will restart.
• Repair Disk Permissions as previously.
• Go to Apple Menu > Software Update.
• Install all updates.
Computer may restart after updates.
• Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
• Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
• Select First Aid in main panel.
• Click Repair Disk Permissions.
If you have your old HDD in an external enclosure you can connect it to the computer and use Setup/Migration Assistant to move your stuff from the old drive when prompted.

My hard drive on my computer crashed! This is the computer my ipad was sync with! All my photos of my three girls are on the ipad, but how do I get them transferred to either an external hard drive or to another computer - or just have them all printed - nearly 1000 photos!
Also, can I back up my ipad with an external hard drive? If I try to sync to a new computer it will erase everything I currently have on the ipad , correct?

Right. You didn't read the post, you only read the title.
The title came from an earlier step in the process when I was posing a question to the systen.
The pertinent part of the question is "How to I back up documents that are stored in iCloud"
That the destination for the backup is NOT my internal HDD should be clear from the rest of the post.
And frankly, even if that is where I want to back up to, that would at least give me two copies, at least giving me one duplicate of the stuff on iCloud.
So please stop wasting my time if you can't answer the actual question: How do I backup content that is stored in iCloud. The destination of the backup is irrelevant.

I am having trouble on transferring photos from iPhoto to my Seagate External Hard Drive

Im new to Mac and I was doing fine with my new laptop but somewhere along the way I have reach to a point where I cant continue my work. I am having trouble on transferring photos from iPhotos to my Seagate External Hard Drive, even when the hard drive is compatable with my MacBook Air. Some how I have trouble trying to drag my photos to my drive and it is not letting me to do so. Pls. help me in my sistuation or derect me to a website that will answer my questions. I am getting really upset and frustrated; so I'm out of ideas.

What is the file system on that drive? Is it formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled)?
And what is your iPhoto version? iPhoto 9.5.1?

What exactly happens when you try to drag photos to your drive? Are you dragging from iPhoto's window to the drive?
Can you export your photos, when you select the photos on iPhoto and use the command "File > Export"?

I installed a new bigger hard drive and now spotlight does not work with outlook to search for emails

My old hard drive was full so I went to an apple authorized provider to install a new bigger hard drive. They also moved the data and applications from my old drive to the new one. They did not use time capsule because their way was faster. After the installation I did have to reenter the product code key for Office 2011 for the Mac. However, now I find that I cannot do email spotlight searches in Outlook. When I put in the search - it comes up with no results. This is true no matter what the search. Any ideas of how to point spotlight to look in the email folders so I can do searches again. This is a feature I use daily - so I am concerned that I have lost this feature. Also, I am noticing that alot of the settings did not carry over to the new hard drive. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I would recommend starting over and migrate using your Time Capsule backup however DO NOT do it wirelessly, connect using an Ethernet Connection. If you upgraded to Lion from Snow Leopard then follow the instructions in this video, the kid is annoying but he knows what he's doing. Clean Install Of Snow Leopard video. Once you have installed and updated Snow Leopard then update using the 10.6.8 Update Combo, then log into the Mac App Store and re-install Lion and all it's updates. My guess this is an afternoons work.

Moving iTunes library from PC to Mac using external hard drive

Hi there,
I recently bought myself a MacBook Air. This is my first Apple computer as I'd always used Windows before. On my old computer (running Vista), I built up a huge iTunes library. I really want to move this over to my Mac but there are two things which are making this a bit more complicated than it needs to be:
1. I want to keep all of my playlists, play counts, date added etc.
2. I don't want the songs to be stored on the computer, I want them kept on an external hard drive. So the library will show all the songs but I need to actually have the external hard drive plugged in to play them. Also saves me a **** of a lot of precious Mac space.
I have read a few things about how to do this so I'm a little along the way. I consolidated all my music files on my old computer and copied them over to the Hard Drive. But from here I just can't get it right. Assuming I've done nothing from this point, what would be the next steps you would take to make points 1 and 2 happen? I will try again based on your instructions but if it doesn't work then I come back and specify at what points it isn't working.
I would be ever so grateful for some guidance on this.

Did you close iTunes on your old computer before you tried to copy it?
If that is not the case right click on the itunes Library.itl in finder.
Usually found in username/Music/iTunes
Select Get info and in the box that appears on the left scroll down to the bottom and check the permissions.
When that is resolved it should just copy over

Can programs be installed on an external hard drive with my mac pro?

Can programs be installed on an external hard drive. I am running low on space. Final Cut Pro X spins off the rendering files which takes a large chunk of space. Like to at least have those rendered files on an external drive, but can find that option to make it happen.

Hello Ian. I am currently using Lion installed on a WD My Passport 500Gig drive connected to my MBPro via USB, which is still running 10.6.8. Like you I am not prepared to lose all my currently functioning Mac, but also like to see how the new OS runs before making the total switch, maybe when it gets to 10.7.2
So after you download Lion and select to run the installer it will show you which disk to install on, being the default SL drive you downloaded Lion with. But here you can click Other Disk and select the external HD. The installer will run and then boot into the external drive to complete the installation. From then on you can use Startup Disk or the Option key to select the preferred OS.

I cannot get files from my desktop to my external hard drive

Does anyone have any information on why my external hard drive would not be allowing me to move files from my computer to my external hard drive? I have a Seagate Free Agent external hard drive. It has 1TB of space that is no where near being used. It will show up on the desktop when I plug it in, but i cannot move anything to it. Also, I have a few movies on the external hard drive that I cannot view for some reason. Does anyone have any input on why that could be? It gives me the pop up window that says "a required codec isn't available." Any onformation will be very helpful. Thank you in advance for your help.

More information would help. How is the external connected? Does the external appear on your Desktop? Has the external been formatted for a Mac? What method do you use to transfer files? When you try to move a file to the external, what does happen?

After I upgraded to Firefox 4 on Windows XP, I was no longer able to print anything directly from a website except PDF files. I can print documents from any installed program on my hard drive. My printer is an HP LaserJet 1220
