After replacing MBP HDD, Screen is whacked

I replaced a bad hard drive with a new 250GB drive today. After booting to the 10.6 disc, (graphics are fine) I do get the language question but after that I get this screen and the spinning beach ball.

I think it looks like a zipper down the middle of the screen. You can see the word "Macbook Pro" at the bottom to give you some perspective. The drive is not formatted yet but that should not matter. Bought it at Best Buy and install went smooth. This is a 1.83Ghz 15" MBP.

You said you replaced the drive today.
I assume that means you had to disassemble your MBP today to do so:
If you bumped something, a cable became loose or something otherwise isn't making contact the way it was, it could cause problems.

  • [NB] X4200 RAID1 question - steps after replacing a HDD?

    Hi,
I got an X4200 machine with LSI RAID controller, 2 HDD, configured as RAID1.
Question - after replacing a HDD, do I need to do anything for the data to be sunched on the new HDD, or is that automatic?
    TIA,
P.S - looking at doc 819-1157-21 (Sun Fire x4200 service manual) sections E.4.1.1 & E.4.7 makes me more confused instead of answering my question...
Edited by: ranshe on Jan 13, 2009 4:54 PM

Found it - http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-4933-13 chapter 2, hot swapping - "The firmware supports hot swapping. The hot-swapped disk is automatically re-synchronized in the background, without any host or user intervention. The firmware detects hot swap removal and disk insertion. Following a hot swap event, the firmware readies the new physical disk by spinning it up and verifying that it has enough capacity for the mirrored volume. The firmware re-synchronizes all hot-swapped disks that have been removed, even if the
same disk is re-inserted. In a two-disk mirrored volume, the firmware marks the hot-swapped disk as the secondary disk and marks the other mirrored disk as the
primary disk. The firmware re-synchronizes all data from the primary disk onto the new secondary disk."

  • Restarts after replacement of LCD screen

My Ipad Mini had a replacement of the LCD screen because it broke down into pieces.  After the Apple service dealer replaced it, the Ipad mini restarts when I open the protective Ipad smart cover (the one sold by Apple with the magnetic hinge that aligns to the left border) and put it completely backwards. When I do not use the smart cover, the problem does not occur at all.
Would someone tell me what is happening?

There are no Apple Authorized repair centers for iOS devices - no such thing exists or ever has.  So whomever repaired it for you is a private party service provider.  You should go back to them and tell them they did not actually fix it.
By having them work on it, you may well have negated any possible replacement by Apple (and Apple does not repair either, they replace damaged or defective items).

  • Problems Replacing MBP HDD

    Hello!!
I just found an exceptionally cheap deal on a Seagate Expansion 1TB drive, and saw it as a good opportunity to upgrade my 750GB HDD that's in my MacBook Pro. However it wasn't that simple, of course...
I've been through the process of cloning my 750GB drive onto the 1TB, and then (with the old drive still in the laptop) started the MBP while holding the options key, selected the external drive and was able to boot from it. When I then removed the 1TB HDD from it's enclosure and put it into my MBP, it wouldn't boot, but stayed on the Apple screen for at least 10 minutes.
I swapped the drives again, and was able to boot from the 1TB while it was external, but can't boot while it's internal. Even when starting up and holding the options key and specifically selecting the 1TB drive it still won't boot from it.
Every guide I've seen would suggest that if I can boot from it externally then there shouldn't be any problems when it's internal. Is there some setting I need to enable to make it boot while inside the computer?
    Thanks!

I turned off the MBP's SMS as suggested... Still nothing It was a long shot afterall..
I've attached a photo comparison of the two drives on the off chance that this might have some significance. The green drive at the back is the new 1TB, and the blue one at the front is the old 750GB. The only physical difference I can see are the four extra pins on the right hand side of the SATA connection on the 1TB drive. There's nothing that connects to these pins when it's in its original enclosure so I don't see how it would have any significance but feel free to tell me that it matters!
Hopefully this will help get a solution..

  • SW failures after replacing T510 HDD and re-installing software from Lenovo Recovery Disks

    Please help...
I have replaced the 320GB SATA drive in my T510 after the original one started to fail. But the resinstalled software (taken from the recovery partition on the old drive) hs problems.
I used the Lenovo Recovery Partition on the old drive to create a bootable Flash Drive in order to re-install to the new drive. It initially appeared that the recovery drive successfully reinstated Windows 7 and associated programs on the brand new (also Seagate 320GB SATA drive).
All was good, I thought - Until I tried Windows Update
Other things are not working well either - e.g. YouTube clips are not playing, IE is working very slowly to name but two.
Windows update fails with the message "Windows Update Cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer".
I have discovered on MS web site that there are fixes for this but the fixes I have tried do not work.
The fixes all seem to look for and check that BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) and Windows Update Srervices are running. I have checked and both services ARE runing but still I get the failure message.
    When running the Microsoft Fix:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2730071
further errors are discovered stating that "troubleshooting was unable to fix all of the issues found.
"Problems installing recent updates - not fixed"
I have serached high and low and the only stuff I can find to fix windows update does not work.
If the replacement HDD was brand new.
Could it be that a BIOS update that took place at some point during the last year or two plus the recovery partition are somehow incompatible.
Could it be that the recovery partition has created an unusable version?
Advice on where to go next will be well received..

    Hello and welcome,
One of the things that can cause this is migrating to an advanced format hard drive (one with 4kb sectors).  For some reason this confuses Windows Update - and some other things.
This KB should help - if this is indeed the problem: Windows Update Fails After Installing New Hard Drive

  • IPhone won't turn on after replacing LCD and Screen

My dad replaced the glass digitizer and LCD panel the screen won't turn on. what could go wrong that would cause this?
I plugged in into the wall charger and it made the charging sound but still the screen didn't turn on. The sound works and vibrator also. I held the home and power button and nothing happened. I took a snapshot and I heard the picture sound. I also hooked it up to my computer and iTunes synced it but still the screen did not turn on. What could I do to make my screen show and be able to use my phone again? Please Help!! Thanks in advance !

As deggie poined out, it could be any number of things. If your dad can't fix it, you may need to find a competent repair shop or buy a new phone. Apple will not service that one.

  • Tecra S5 - After replacing the HDD I can't install Windows XP

I cannot boot from CD, I have tried by booting from CD through BIOS, by pressing "C" but I had no luck.
    Any ideas?

    Hi
Either you CD/DVD drive starts to malfunctions and you would not be able to boot from any disk or the CD/DVD drive does not handle only this certain disk.
You could try to bun/copy the disk and could try to boot using the copied CD.
In many cases the CD/DVD drive cannot read only one, certain disk. This happens due to old CD/DVD firmware.
Try to copy the disk using another computer maybe it will work if not, then you need to change the ODD.

  • MacBook Pro does not boot past apple screen after replacing hard drive

After replacing hard drive on MacBook Pro 13 inch early 2011 model, the screen only boots to the apple logo.  Do I need to re-install the OS?

The problem is that the OS is not in any where else of the MacBook Pro than in the HD / SSD. If you replace the Hard Drive, then you will need to Re-install OSX into that hard drive, it's pretty easy.
    1) Power up your Macbook Pro, as fast as you can press and hold the Option key (ALT). You'll see that it opens the bootable-devices you have, you'll see a Recovery partition, click it.
(If the Hard Drive contains data do the following)
    2) In the menu select Disk Utility.
    3) In Disk Utility go ahead and select the Hard Drive that is inside the MBP.
    4) Erase the content.
(If the Hard Drive contains no data continue with the following jumping the last 3 steps).
    5) Select Re-install OSX.
    6) Select the Hard Drive in which you want to install it.
Follow the steps of everything else (it should take approximately 1 hour to do the whole thing).
    Hope this helps!
    Later.

  • Screen issue after replacement - Model CB30

Replaced broken screen on Toshiba Chromebook. After replacing the screen:
1 – Unit powers on, new screen is receiving power, but the screen is black. No image.
2 – Double check – this is NOT the screen brightness being turned down via the keyboard.
3 – System recovery - display is back – screen comes on perfectly.
4 – Setup successful.  Unit is functional. Can use it with no issue.
5 – First time you shutdown / restart the unit, the screen is non-functional. Same as
described in #1 - screen is black. No image, but it is getting power....
    Really a weird issue...

I should say that the replacement was done by the apple store.  If they refuse to fix it properly, what options do I have?

  • IPhone 5s.  After replacing my battery with a long life battery I was prompted to connect to iTunes after powering on.  A download began and then aborted and was returned to same download screen.  What can I do to resolve the problem?

After replacing my battery with a long life battery and powering up the phone, I was directed to plug into iTunes where a download began and then stopped, returning me to the screen instructing me to plug into iTunes again.  I cannot get past this point.  I even tried reinstalling the original battery but still have the same problem.  How can I resolve?

  • 4s No sound in calls after replacing screen

After replacing the screen on an iPhone 4s, I have no sound in calls.  Other callers can not hear me and I can not hear them.  have tried with the speaker on and off.  The speakers play music and sounds just fine.  The mic pics up just fine if I do a voice note.  I can also listen to voicemails through the earpice, speaker, and headphones with no problem.  So, all functions of sound are working correctly except in a call.  I have restored the phone to factory and it is latest firmware with no jailbreak.  I am in the process of putting a piece of tape between the noise canceling sensor and the screw below it as I've seen with the 4 but I have no idea what else it might be.  Any ideas?

Talk to whoever replaced the screen. Apple doesn't repair the display on the iPhone 4 or 4S, they replace the entire phone.
The iPhone is not user servicable. Apple does not sell parts.
If you want help fixing it yourself, try someplace like ifixit.com.

  • S10 screen stuck on "factory test" mode after replacing ribbon

After replacing the LCD ribbon on my S10 netbook (with one the exact same) it seems to be stuck on some "factory test" mode. It flickers between solid red, green, and blue and also some gradients and other patterns.
I'm still able to use my netbook using an external monitor.
I don't want to use OneKey because 1) I'm not certain it'd fix it + 2) there's a broken ext3 partition that I need to recover files from. If it's the only way to do a reset (don't know) then so be it.
    Thanks for any help!

I should mention that when I boot to Windows XP and select "Notebook" from the graphics output options, the notebook screen goes back to displaying the test patterns. Otherwise it's off when the external monitor is plugged in.
