AGP G4/400 fans growling at me

I have a 400 mhz AGP G4 that I use as my main computer. Now I have noticed it is making quite a large amount of noise. The fans are quite loud and im not sure which one is the noisiest but im pretty sure they both are quite loud. Some times when I start up the computer the fans make a growling noise while beggining to spin up. I've stuck a hair dryer in there and blown out all the dust in the case and it is still noisy. Would it be inexpensive/easy to replace the case fan/PSU fan, and if so what are the types of fans I would need?
thanks,
Allen

Have you used compressed air to clean out any accumulated dust in and around the fans? If dust isn't a contributing cause of the noise, you may wish to replace them. This recent Topic discussed replacement of the fans in the G4-AGP model. The cost isn't high and keeping the internal temperatures down is very important. To quiet noisy fans, some have reported success by removing the foil label on the back of the fan, applying a light lubricant, and re-applying the label or piece of vinyl tape (to keep the lubricant from dripping out). I've had to do this for some of those non-standard, mini-fans on graphics cards. If a fan has gotten noisy, either the sleeve bearing or ball bearing race has probably gotten worn from friction. With large, industry-standard fans readily available, I'd rather replace a noisy one. The case fan isn't such a headache to remove and try lubricating, but if you go to the trouble of removing the power supply to access the fan for a temporary fix like this, your time would be better spent by just replacing it. A lubricated, older fan will never compare to a new one. As I mentioned in another Topic, you want to purchase fans with high airflow for the speed, but pay attention to the noise level (dBA rating) indicated. Cooling fans should do their job, without being noticed.

Ok, here's my problem. When i turn the computer on, usualy  after a shutdown,
right after I get about 6 or maybe even 10 fast beeps, then after this , about
30 seconds later, i get about 3 long beeps. My power supply just stopped
working yesterday, as when i turned on the power it didn't even come on. The
LAN light came on, but the psu or fans on my cpu etc did not come on. Sometimes
after a cold boot or so, it'll all come on go into windows and work fine. My
ram is tuned to my comp, so i know it can't be the problem. Its at CAS latency
2.5 3 6 3   My comp and nothing will turn on with my current psu.The psu won't
even start up it's fan. So I'm assumming its dead.Is this a power supply issue?
It was working every once in a blue moon, but alot of times when i start up, I
get those beeps and i have to restart or wait a while later. Usualy it works if
I unhook all the power cords, and all the IDE cables from the CD-ROM and
harddrive, but only sometimes. I think its just not gett
ing enough power. The Psu was working for a long while, but lately after i got windows on it, i 'd restart and the comp would come on with the beeps, i'd then switch off the power supply and switch it back on, and everything would boot up.
But yesterday after a last boot, nothing came on but the LAN light. Also my power button does not turn on my computer, my PSU does though??? I think this is a huge PSU problem or power problem, but I am all not sure. Well, any help will be apreciated.
Is this a RAM issue maybe? (doubtful)  A mobo issue?(also very doubtful)

  • What to do about not waking after Sonnet Tango USB FW PCI in G4 AGP Graph?

I have bought a used PowerMac G4 AGP Graphics 400 MHz, running OS X 10.3.9, 512 Megs of RAM, 20 GB internal ATA HD, Internal CDRW, Internal ZIP 100, Adaptec SCSI SE card (25 pole).
That system was just fine - amazing power for an 8 year old computer!!!
Then I installed a Sonnet Tango USB 2.0 FW 400 PCI card that I removed from my PowerMac 7600 - Sonnet G3 running OS 9.1 where it worked flawlessly.
I wanted to get USB 2.0 in the G4. The card works great - burning a DVD with a LG Burner attached via USB was amazing - DVD done in 5 min!
However one Problem: I cannot let the system go to sleep any more. Once it is to sleep I cannot wake it any more. I have to force reboot. When I choose sleep from the menu, the first time the computer wakes immediately after going to sleep, when I try once more, I get a message that I have to force reboot the machine by pressing the power key for 5 seconds.
Does anybody have a solution (to this apparently relatively common problem).
I have included a passage from my system log.

    Hi KBReid,
Your issue looks really familiar. I have a G5 iMac (all stock except 2G RAM upgrade) that has been running 10.5.6 for, well, as long as it's been out. The machine is set to automatically shutdown at 10PM and boot up at 8AM. It's on a UPS. 4 nights ago it shut down, and in the morning it was stuck at a light blue screen with the pinwheel in the top left corner after it tried to boot up. I've unplugged it, reset PRAM, went into OF and typed reset-all. Here's the kicker: I can boot from the 10.4 disc that came with the iMac and see the drive, verify/repair (nothing was wrong). It won't repair permissions because it looks for some "package." The iMac won't boot from the 10.5 disc (full retail). Or perhaps I should say that it won't completely boot, because it does the same thing that the hard drive does: it goes through the apple screen, then two shades of grey and two shades of blue really slowly, then it stops with the pointer at the top left (leaving a copy of it lurking in the top left corner if I move it.) Eventually the pointer becomes the spinning wheel, and then it's all over.
I don't think that it did any update (I have it set to ask first, and the boot partition chooser in 10.4 disc still show 10.5.6 as the HD OS) so I'm totally baffled why it is acting the way it does.
Any suggestions? Did you resolve your issue?
    Thanks!

  • "How can you Tell if 2xAGP or 4xAGP on PowerMac G4 AGP Sawtooth?"

Have PowerMac G4 AGP Sawtooth 400.
    Are all sawtooth G4's 2xAGP?

    WayneStewart,
Thank you kind Sir: Was a major help on infor. I needed to know since I'm replacing the ATI Rage 128 with a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 AGP Card. Just found out the card is 3.3 volts & 1.5, retail & not flashed. So will worked perfect on the G4.

  • Fan air flow feels weak, replace?

    hi all
Fan Air flow from my G4 MDD is not as strong as my G4(AGP) Mac's fan. When I put my hand in back of my MDD, air flow is light. Should I be looking for a stronger flow? It maybe why my MDD shuts off sometimes without warning.
    your help is appreciated.
    Web dude

The air flow out the back of the MDD is meant to be slow, it has a large fan inside that only has to spin relatively slowly. Can you feel the air intake at the bottom of the front ?
Sudden shut off could be overheating, get a temperature monitor program, like "Hardware Monitor" (use google). and check the CPU temp, should float around 58-59, up to 62 when busy busy.
When you have the chance, check inside and clear out any dust build-up.

  • Fan of CPU Mega865

Hello, I have just punctured a card ATI RADEON 9250 (128 MB DDR, 8x AGP) and the fan of the CPU of my Mega865 does not stop turning ... is it normal? Before puncturing the card it was turning very rarely with the intensity that does it now and I use the same programs and games. Regards.

The AGP slot is really close to the CPU so it may be heating a little more your CPU and, because of that, the fans are kicking at full speed. In addition, if you haven't reversed your fans, the air that is trying to cool your heatsink is coming from your AGP card (not a good idea,  ) so the fans must run even faster. In that case, I'll try to reverse BOTH fans and report your temps later.

  • PowerMac G4 having problems with new RAM modules!

    dear all,
I’ve recently got 2 512 MB Ram module from a British eBay dealer, to be used on 2 different but very similar PowerMac G4 AGP Graphichs 400 MHz machines.
I installed the first module in my father’s Mac, and it works fine, no problems of any sort. Then, a few days later, I installed the other module in my PowerMac, and immediately it started behaving very erratically: some programs didn’t open at all and others crashed with no warning, I tried to run Rember but it soon get stuck. I assumed the Ram module was faulty, emailed the dealer (who’s been very helpful) and then sent it back to get a replacement. The new module arrived yesterday, I installed it... and it was even worse: as some programs didn’t open as soon as the new module was installed, I rebooted the PowerMac but it hasn’t been able even to load the OS anymore, it just stopped at the blue screen forever, once came out a black screen and a Darwin login, but nothing else. As soon as I removed the Ram module the PowerMac started to work perfectly again.I'd assume again there's something wrong in the Ram module, but isn't it too much unlucky to get 2 faulty modules one after the other, or maybe the problem could somewhere else, in my PowerMac?!?
Unfortunately I can't test the new module in my father's machine, as we live 700 kms apart.
    My hardware details are:
    Power Mac G4
    Model: PowerMac3,3
    CPU: PowerPC G4 (2.9)
    1 CPU
    CPU Speed: 400 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
    Memory: 896 MB
    Bus speed: 100 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.2.8f1
    thanks!

ok, I've now tried every possible combination... but with no success
First, taking out one of the "old" 128 MB I realized it was one of the High density DIMMs (chips on one side only) Japamac was mentioning, in total 2 of the 128 modules were like this. However, taking out one or both of them, or even having only the "new" 512 MB module in, hasn't changed much, sometimes the OS booted, sometimes not but there were always some programs not opening/crashing and Rember got stuck with an error message. With just the "new" module the booting stopped at the blue screen (only blue, no apple splash screen in the centre).
With the new module plus one of the old 128 MB modules (the one with chips on both sides) Rember got stuck very soon, and the error message was:

  • G5 Dual 2.5 Randomly Sleeps

All of a sudden my G5 dual 2.5 has started putting itself to sleep randomly and frequently (minutes between sleep). I can wake it up fine but I can't get any work done. I'm running 10.3.9. I don't have any of the energy saver settings set to sleep (computer, hard drive or monitor) and I never have. It runs 24/7. The only software that has changed recently is an iTunes upgrade to 7.6.2.
I disconnected everything except ethernet, monitor and the USB keyboard and mouse. I can get it to run fine if I remove the air deflector. I worked on it for about 5 hours today with the deflector off and had no problems. I cannot see any signs of a coolant leak.
Although I'm certain it's a hardware problem. I tried running DiskWarrior from a special boot CD. It starts up fine from the CD and I can start DiskWarrior. But when it gets to step 6 (building replacement directory structure) it starts to go to sleep (all the fans stop and the monitor goes black). I hit the space bar and it wakes back up. The fans start up again and DiskWarrior continues. I've tried it twice with the same results. I never actually do the rebuild though because I'm afraid it will go to sleep and totally screw up the hard drive. The fact that the sleep problem exists even when running off the CD suggests that I have some sort of hardware problem doesn't it?

I disconnected the power over night and reset the PMU. Neither changed anything. Here's what looks to be a relevant section of the console log.

  • Copy not as sharp as the original

When I copy a photo that I downloaded from the Internet on a CD (so I can trash the original to save space on the HD) the copy is not as sharp as the original.
Is that part of the story with copying an image or is the disk at fault ? I use Imation CD-R 1x-8x compatible 650 MB-74 min. Also (not sure if this is relevant) I was on OS 9.0.4 and later 9.2.2 when I downloaded. I have now Mac OS X.
The difference between the copy and the original is small but there's a difference. On some picture it is obvious, on other I have to look well and back and forth until I see -"Oh yeah there's less details !" Out of curiosity I took one of these photo saved on CD and put it on Adobe Photoshop and changed the contrast (or was it brightness/sharpness ?) I was surprised to see that if I make it sharper by just 1% it is exactly as the original. Didn't imagine that 1% will make such a difference but it does. It was a while a go; Perhaps it was 2% but certainly not more. If I have a headshot of a person, the hair on the original can clearly be seen as hair (individual hair, that you can almost count) while on the copy it's a bunch of hair. Or the eyes, skin, everything is sharp on the original, dull on the copy.
On some picture the difference is obvious (I guess it will be more than 1% if I put it on Adobe.)
So why is that ? why isn't a copy like the original since the picture is digital ?

    Hi eww..
I should have said in my first phrase
"When I copy on a CD, a photo that I downloaded from the Internet and put it on the HD."
    They are all .jpg usually around 100K (72K, 88 K,104K, 164, 280K)
I visit a site (Photography, Nature, etc.) and if I like a picture I click File-->save as. The display ask Where: MacIntosh HD
    Format : Web Archives
This is now with Mac X...with OS 9.0.4 it was slightly different : the choices were
    Web Archive
    HTML source
    plain text
But regardless if OS 9 or X, these photos are now on my HD .
That's all I do, I do not open any application, just "save" and it is on my HD, and as I said when I copy from the HD to a CD and then compare the two, the saved photo on the CD is not as sharp as the one on the HD.
    You said
This isn't true when the copies are made by the Finder, without opening the file. If you have a .jpg file on your desktop, and you hit Command-D to duplicate it,
    A) Or Finder-->File-->Duplicate ? same thing right ?
So if I want a good copy all I have to do is put the file on the desktop, leave it close and hit Command-D to duplicate it, (or Finder-->File-->Duplicate if it's the same thing) and I'm OK ? It has to be on the desktop ?
    B) OK I just click Duplicate on a photo unopened dragged on the desktop and then duplicate it. I compare the two and this is weird coz the copy is sharper (slightly but visible) than the original. How could that be I ask myself so I switch the original on the right side of the monitor and the copy on the left side and what do you know the original is now better.
Out of curiosity I also copied a photo unopened still in one of my folder (to check if I HAVE to put it on my desktop) and compare the two. Same thing: left side of monitor.. etc.
I did not compare the copy done inside the folder with one done on the desktop.
Now I have to check if the problem I mentioned in my first post is due to the monitor or not. Everything on the right side is sharper.
My monitor, a new (now 1 year or so) LCD Samsung Syncmaster 910T seems fine. I don't see anything wrong while looking at it. I turned out the table lamp behind me since it is on my right about 2 arms length thinking that perhaps it illuminates the screen more (knowing fully well it's not that: it illuminates the room and the entire screen but just to be sure.) No change. the difference remains the same Everything on the right side on the monitor is sharper.
But if you open a .jpg image in a photo viewing and editing application and do a Save As... to make another copy of it in .jpg format, it's re-compressed — and JPEG compression is "lossy": it discards image information that the JPEG algorithm defines as relatively unimportant in order to make the image file smaller. Each time a JPEG file is opened and re-saved, it's re-compressed, and it gets smaller and less sharp and detailed. By the third or fourth generation, the image may be a real mess.
    C) 1. "photo viewing and editing application" ? Like Adobe ? Are you saying that if I open an image I have on Adobe photoshop and make changes, (sharpness, color, whatever) and then I save this new document, it's re-compressed ?
    2. Ditto if I just copy an image I have on Adobe photoshop (or on the HD). it's re-compressed ?
    3. Also when I want to copy something I can click copy or duplicate and never knew what's the difference between these 2 words.
What is the deadline to wish a Happy New year ? January 26 ?

  • About an external drive

About the HD: I will buy an external drive (it's easier than install it inside).
    My computer uses ATA drive.
    1) Most brand do not mention if they are ATA or SATA. Does it matter if I buy an external drive ?
    2) I see in my catalogue from Mac connection that some say "Firewire 800 and Firewire 400." What is that ?
    3) Other brands don't mention 800 or 400 but simply say 7200RPM (OK, I know that is the speed, and it seems most are 7200 RPM). In case 400 and 800 is also speed, what's the difference between 7200RPM and 400 ?
Since i'm gonna buy a firewire external drive I checked what I have:
When I click File--> Get Info
    I see
I have FireWire Enabler and Firewire support both v. 2.3.3 and underthat it's written
Update Mac OS9v1.2 (created in 2000)
What does it mean ? I have OS 9.0.4 :Is my firewire too advanced for OS 9.0.4 ?
Also I know that now they have version 2.5. I downloaded this but didn't install it yet.
I have 2 firewire port on my computer from the year 2000
I use one for my Yamaha CD recorder.
I will upgrade too Mac X soon.
power G4 AGP graphics 400 Mhz   Mac OS 9.0.x

With an external FireWire drive it won't matter if the drive in the case is ATA or SATA.
FireWire 400 is the older version of FireWire. FireWire 800 is the newer version. Your Mac has FireWire 400.
7200 RPM is how fast the platters inside the hard drive are spinning. FireWire 400 and 800 (400 megabits/second and 800 megabits/second) are measures of how fast the data is transferred over the bus and have no relation to the RPM of the hard drive.
You want an external drive with a FireWire 400 port to be compatible with your G4.

  • Installation interuptus OS 9

Finally upgrading from 8.6 on Power Mac G4 AGP with 400 mhz to OS 9 with hopes of goint on up to OS X Tiger.
Challenge is interuption to installation in that it requests that I change the name of files "Desktop Pictures," so that it can create a file for that purpose. I have done an extensive search and re-titled all of that name but it still requests change. Stymied.
It will also not continue install for other items such as:
people.cnl, xmodem tool, www.apple.com, western european stopwords and remove-retrieve. I have manged to move these into a desktop folder and reinitialize install but it will now not check harddrive and asks it I want to ignore. Can I ignore?
3 "minutes" 'til finish and halted every time. Your assistant greatly appreciated.

You stated it requests that I change the name of files "Desktop Pictures," so that it can create a file for that purpose.
I did a search of my OS 9 partition using "desktop". I found a folder named Desktop Pictures in the System folder>Appearance folder. Do a search of your 8.6 HD using "desktop" & see what you find. You may have duplicates somewhere else. I did not find a file with that name.
You could boot using the OS 9 install CD & move the entire 8.6 System folder to the Trash (but don't empty Trash) & then do the install. Then there shouldn't be any conflict. I'm assuming you are using a retail OS 9 install CD & not a CD from another model Mac. Correct?
After you get OS 9 installed, upgrade to 9.2.2. Then upgrade your firmware (Boot ROM version) per Mac OS X: Available firmware updates
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117 Now you will be ready to install OS X.
Here are the Tiger & Panther requirements. They say 256MB RAM, but you really need 512 or more RAM. I have Panther on my G4 400MHz.

  • K7T Turbo2 Will Not Boot

I just purchased a K7T Turbo2 w/ an Athlon 1Ghz CPU for a client. The system will not POST. I just get a Red-Green-Green-Red LED Readout.
According to the manual, this means that the processor is not initializing.
I have tried different RAM, a different Video Card, taken the board out of the case, and everything else I can think of.
I don't have another processor to test with, so before I borrow one, I was wondering if it would be the processor, or if it would be the MB.
    Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem with a KT3 Ultra2. I took it back, got another, and SAME THING! This is whats happenin'.
One power supply would not turn anything on, plain and simple. The other power supply I had would power the board, but the power would come on after flipping the back black switch. No POST, no front panel buttons working, no g4mx440 bios, no speaker beeps at all. The LED pattern I had (at powerup) was R-R-G-G : init. hard drive controller. Doesn't make sense to me.
I'm stumped. I'm using a Duron 1gHz and a Samsung DDR 128MB stick.  (the CPU and AGP card's fans also come on with the power.) X( Help would be great.

  • KT4 Ultra won't post.

KT4 Ultra won't give any output to monitor. Tried swapping video cards (AGP), monitors. Fans spin on the video card. Getting LED's on my NIC, so I have power in the PCI's. Hard drive and CD-ROM spins, and system fan comes on. Have yet to clear CMOS, but I'm doubting (also hoping)  that will fix it. No internal speaker, otherwise I'm sure I would be getting beeps. Never flashed BIOS, no recent updates to hardware/software within past two months. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Tried switching the video card already, and I also tried a different monitor as well. I've tested everything else out and I've narrowed it down to the mobo. PSU is fine, and I have since cleared the CMOS as well, but to no avail. I have never flashed the BIOS, and no changes were made in the BIOS before this happened (at least for two months, that's when I added my DVD-ROM.) CPU is fine and when it was up and running, it was around 53 C under a full load. Thanks for the suggestions, though.

  • MS-6547V2 Won't Boot

I just bought a ms-6547v2 on ebay.  Installed a celeron 2.4, stick of 256 pc2100 generic ddr, and agp mx2-400 video card.  300w power supply.  When powered on I get one short beep, no video, cpu van continues to run.  Unit will shut down if power button is held in.  Any ideas?

It's Probably due to the Fact that your 300 watt powersupply is of poor quality ....POST the PSU specs. on the rails in amps..ie +12V=?A, +3.3V=?A, 5.0V=?AMPS.?.....But first go into the BIOS by hitting Del key as soon as you hit the Power Button then Set the memory timings to SPD and the DRAM (V-DIMM) Voltage to 2.7 Volts....But if you cant get into the BIOS It most likely is the PSU that has to be upgraded to a 420 watt quaulity PSU....Sean REILLY.....Ps..Let us know if you get into the BIOS

  • K8N Neo2 - no post

Ok, I had this machine running nicely for about 8 months. So, today morning I needed my 2nd mouse for another machine so I took it (MX610's wireless thingie from usb-hub connected to I/O-plate USB-connector) and went to another room. When I came back the machine was shut down. It didn't boot so stripped it to minium hardware but there was no image on screen (Samsung 193P+ hooked via 6800GT DVI) when I booted it. I attached my D-Bracket and it showed 2 yellow led's and two red. According to manual two green and two red means that my mobo is "Processor Initialization - This will show information regarding the processor (like brand name, system bus, etc...)"'ing. The led positions matched. What should I do? RMA the board?

    What I've tried:
Clear CMOS, took the battery out, swapped graphics cards, swapped HD's, swapped PSU, completely rebuilt the computer, swapped KB's (PS2)

CPU swap is impossible, I don't have any other CPU. The same PSU (it is quality one, not those what you get for fifty bucks) runs fine on moderately overclocked Abit AN7 + AXP-M2400+ (w/ 5 HD's) (which I am currently typing)
Results were same with Antec 380W (18A? on 12V rail)
The graphics card was the only component overclocked at the moment. Memoryswap didn't help, already tried. I'll return the board and see if they get it work/replace it :|
