Air Application Icons

Not sure if this is the best forum - but I have been pulling my hair out over this on and off for about a year now.
I can't get custom icons to show in the air app I'm trying to create using Flex Builder.
I have done the following:
Created an assets folder under src
added 4 PNG icon files to that folder (tried PNG-8, PNG-24, with and without transparency)
added the following to the -app.xml
        <image16x16>assets/pawprint16.png</image16x16>
        <image32x32>assets/pawprint32.png</image32x32>
        <image48x48>assets/pawprint48.png</image48x48>
        <image128x128>assets/pawprint128.png</image128x128>
Verrified that these files end up in Export build and that the folder is in the bin-debug
but these never show up when the air app is installed and run.
what am I missing?

Hi,
I think you should get the icons unless you forgot to uncommecnt the <icon> tags

  • Bug: Custom AIR Application icons on Mac OS X don't display after install

    There are circumstances where custom AIR application icons don't display in certain Finder views after installation.
    This is apparent when viewing the application in a docked folder popup. The icon renders as a blank with a sort of no entry slash across it. Another example where this occurs is in a Downloads folder in the Dock (if you immediately create an alias to the app in the your Downloads folder, and your Downloads folder is in the Dock).
    In addition, the maximum icon size of 128x128 really not that large. I wish AIR applications could have larger icons, like real applications.

    I've seen this occur with numerous applications (native OS X and AIR) and typically restarting the dock (rebooting or logout/login) fixes it for me.  Doing a quick search on Google show's that it's a pretty common occurrence.  Are you still seeing this occur after rebooting?
    As for the large icon support, I would like to encourage you to vote for the following two feature requests!

  • Support system tray icon of Air application

    Hi All,
    I developed a widget with flash builder 4 and I exported all the project in AIR application. Then, I packaged AIR application in .exe file for Windows, and dmg file for MAC. My application works correctly for both of OS.
    When I launch application on OS Windows, an image on system tray (for my application a socceer ball) appears. On the other side, on OS MAC my icon appears, but after 3 or 4 seconds it disappears and it is replaced with an other icon (probably it's a default icon of mac for this kind of application?) ...
    What can I do? Thanks in advance, regards
    Gianni

    I attached files reporting images of icon on system tray. I didn't set any option on app descriptor, I used SystemTrayIcon and DockIcon APIs.
    Anyway I attach part of my application code ...
    windowComplete event of WindowedApplication is handled by function preInit () ...
                private function onWindowActivate():void
                    if (!this.windowActivateRequest)
                        this.dock();

                    var arrayTmp:Array = new Array();
                    arrayTmp.push(bitmampDataTmp);

                    exitCommand.addEventListener(Event.SELECT, chiudi);
                    return iconMenu;
    trayIcon is name of .png which represent ball image ...
    I try to summarize ...In MAC OS DockIcon isn' t represented by ball image ...In Windows OS everything works.
    I'm sorry for disturbing you but I hope that everything is clear.

  • Flex/Air applications with an OS X Menu Bar icon

    (Flash Builder 4 beta)
    I'm developing a flex/air application for mac os x exclusivley. The application should be very unobtrusive to the user, and as such, I want to eliminate the dock icon for the application and have it run exclusivley in the os x menu bar. Similar to a twitterific app. I've scoured the documentation for a way to do this, but only come up with methods for a system tray in windows, and dock icon function on a mac.
    Does AIR really lack the ability to have a menu bar icon?
    Thanks in advance!

    I've made menu's already for the application. They are native os x menu's but they are used create contextual menus (file, edit, view...etc...) and are only visible when the application is open. Unless their is a feauture I missed I don't think I can do it with those. I'm looking for the ability to create a menubar icon application similar to twitter, or the default apple spotlight.

  • Packaging an AIR application in a native installer

    Hi! I'm trying to create a native installer of my AIR Application,  because (I think) it's the only way make the native processes working.  But I have a problem: I used the following command to pack: "adt  -package -storetype pkcs12 -keystore myCert.pfx -target native  -storetype pkcs12 -keystore myCert.pfx myApp.exe myApp-app.xml", but I get  the error: "File myApp-app.xml is not a valid AIRI or AIR file". In the  Flash Builder I use as additional compiler arguments:  "-locale=pt_PT,en_UK,fr_FR,de_DE,ro_RO,es_ES  -allow-source-path-overlap=true -source-path=assets" and I add the  source path "src/locale/{locale}/". What is the sintax for packing my  AIR application in a native installer? Thanks in advance.

    Hi again! Thanks for the reply. I based myself on the link to see what command syntax I should use to pack my Air Windowed Application and it was the command that I presented in the previous post.

  • AIR File Icon (For Native Installer)

    Hi,
    I am generating AIR application as native installer (.exe). I want to have a custom icon for my .exe file.
    I have specified the icons in application descriptor file as
    <icon>
                        <image16x16>icon...</image16x16>
                        <image32x32>icon...</image32x32>
                        <image48x48>icon...</image48x48>
                        <image57x57>icon...</image57x57>
                        <image72x72>icon...</image72x72>
                        <image114x114>icon...</image114x114>
                        <image128x128>icon...</image128x128>
              </icon>
    But this icon does not appear to be .exe file icon, It appears as application installed file icon. I want to have different icons for application installed icon (Application Icon) and separate icon for application installer (.air or .exe file custom icon)
    Kindly suggest any solution

    In this case you need to update installer icon manually via third-party app like freeware "ResourceHacker" http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/

  • Images stored in Application Data folder are not visible in HTML Page generated by AIR Application

    Hi Programmers,
    I have an AIR application where in I am capturing the images of persons via web cam and storing them in the Application Data folder of the users machine. I am successfully able to do so.
    However, when generating the report in the HTML format from within the AIR application, I use the image captured and give the absolute path. but some how the image doesnt appear in the browser, I get the icon for image not found.
    When I right click on the image, select property and copy the image path in new browser, I can see that image. Any thoughts on why this is happening?
    Thanks,
    Hitesh patel

    I tried changing the directory  as following in java class:
    File trgDir = new File("/tmp/myTarget/");
    File srcDir = new File("/tmp/mySource/");
    FileUtils.copyDirectory(srcDir, trgDir);
    but unfortunately  Adf mobile application does not support "File Utils. copy Directory" library
    so is there any way to circumvent this problem.
    Any help would be appreciated

  • Why is my Air application taking so long to show the first view on iOS devices?

    I built an Air application that runs on Android devices and iOS devices. The application uses Air 3.4 and Flex SDK 4.6. On my Android device, the application starts in 5 seconds. On my iPad device, the application starts in 90 seconds.
    My application has a splash screen, which is launched via the ViewNavigatorApplication property, splashScreenImage.
    The application was built in release mode and the SWF file is 1.384M. After I create the ad-hoc build, which includes the Air Captive Runtime, I see the following file sizes and startup times.
    iPad 2 - ipa size, 8.6M
    12 seconds of black screen. Then my splash screen appears. 80+ seconds of splash screen. Then my first view appears.
    Android Nexus 7 - apk size, 4.0M
    2.5 seconds of black screen. Then my splash screen appears. 2.5 seconds of splash screen. Then my first view appears.
    Here are more details about my app.
    It's a video conferencing app. So I have to set renderMode to "cpu". The app has 5 views and several popups. The popups use the SkinnablePopupContainer. The app uses dependency injection as provided by the Parsley framework to share two small data objects between the views. The app uses web service calls to manage the conference state.
    The problem occurs at startup. I haven't rendered a view with video logic, and the first view is a welcome page with a scrollable text area for terms and conditions, one button with an icon, one toggle button, and one hyperlink button.
    The app has about 400k of embedded images which are rendered using the MultiDPIBitmapSource.
    The app has 43.3K of icons for the various sizes as specified in the application xml file.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I figured out how to resolve the issue. I had to change the renderMode from "cpu" to "direct". That solved the problem, and the application performs perfectly. Even the video displays work ok. It's interesting that Adobe advises against using "gpu" or "direct" renderMode when displaying video. I need to figure out why and make sure the application is acceptable as is.
    I have more testing to conduct, but I'm very encouraged.

  • Adobe AIR application file types

    Hello everyone,
    I dont know how to go about this but i was wondering how possible it is to create an application with its own filetype using the AIR application descriptor xml file in such a way that everytime a file is created from that Air App, it takes the icon of  the application. I kmow this is posssible beccause i have tried it. What is even cooler is the fact that everytime you click on that file, you AIR app automatically starts. But the Real Question is how do you start the App with you file loaded.
    In my case i'm writtting an app in which you can create or load an SQLLite database file with a custom file type. Its an inventory manager which you can load databases which contain inventory information u previously stored or create a new database file to store your new inventory information. How do i Click an already existing database file so that the application loads with that database...
    Anyone done something similar?

    No thanks Guys, i figured how to load those files...all i had to do was to provide an implemention for the application's invoke event. the files clicked can be accessed by the event object's argument property which is an array so if you selected a file, the native path of the file can be accessed using event.arguments[0]
    I hope this information is valuable to anyone who needs a similar functionality!

  • Adobe Air Application Installer on Utilities Folder

    I just got my first mac early this year so I still haven't gotten the hang of the Mac OS. Anyway, I installed Adobe Photoshop CS4 a few days back but I uninstalled it a few days after. I noticed when I opened my utilities folder I saw the following:
    Adobe Air Applications Installer
    Adobe Air Uninstaller
    Adobe Installer Folder
    Adobe Utilites Folder
    I can't remember if the files were there even before I installed the Adobe Photoshop CS4 program. Is it safe for me to remove these files? If it is, how do I remove them? Thanks!

    theoc3 wrote:
    I clicked the Adobe Air Uninstaller icon in my utilities folder and a pop up box appeared with the message:
    "Adobe AIR already installed. This version of Adobe AIR is already installed on your system"
    Figures
    Just move them to desktop, restart and see if you get any alerts.
    Also check in System Preferences for Version Cue and if you have it, turn it off.

  • Need better alternative to Adobe AIR Application Installer

    In order to build a double-clickable desktop application,
    apparently one has to use the Adobe AIR Application Installer. This
    is bad for a few reasons:
    It's not scriptable.
    It hard-wires the name of the swf file to load into the
    generated binary.
    For Mac OS X, the "swf launcher" should be a simple "launcher
    stub". The name of the swf file to load should be read from the
    Info.plist file. If it did this, then the stub could be the same
    for all applications. For Windows, there could be a simple XML
    config file in the same directory as the app that serves the same
    purpose as Info.plist on the Mac.
    I hope Adobe addresses this soon.

    You could make the launcher app itself headless so you don't
    get two dock icons.
    This doesn't address the need to have a non-GUI alternative to
    the Air Application Installer so builds can be completely
    automated.
    It definitely breaks the drag-and-drop of a file onto the
    application's icon.
    I never said I have 2 Dock icons. (I already solved that
    problem by making the server "faceless" by setting LSUIElement to 1
    in the server's Info.plist.)
    Why do I want completely automated builds? Aside from the
    ease of just being able to type "ant" and press Return, any real
    development group has things such that a "build machine"
    automatically rebuilds the app (on all platforms) after ever
    developer check-in to check for accidental build breakage. Those
    builds also become available to QA for them to test.
    Ever time some new development tool comes out where the
    authors provide a GUI tool (presumably because they think GUI =
    easy), I have to wonder, "What were they thinking?" If the authors
    are themselves developers, how can they not see how crippling not
    providing an all-command-line tool-chain is? Don't all non-trivial
    development groups do automated builds as described above? The only
    answer I can think of is that some
    PHB
    somewhere thought it would be a "neat idea" to have an
    "easy-to-use" GUI application (because that sells to other PHBs).
    As to drag-and-drop: presumably, the swf launcher that gets
    generated properly handles drag-and-drop of files onto the
    application's icon and Does The Right Thing when it happens (where
    "right thing" usually means simply opening the document dropped
    onto the icon). Now, since my launcher gets launched instead, that
    breaks drag-and-drop unless I implement that functionality myself.
    The way I've implemented my launcher is such that, after the
    fork(), it's the parent process that exec's itself into the client
    thus keeping the original process ID. The hope is that Launch
    Services on the Mac, when handling and drag-and-drop event, will
    send said event to the original process -- which is now the client
    -- and everything Just Works. I have yet to get around to testing
    this (I'm busy with other things at the moment); but, if it turns
    out that my hope isn't fulfilled, well then I can fall back to
    keeping my launcher running to get and forward the OpenDoc
    AppleEvents from my launcher to the swf launcher.
    So, anyway, back to my original plea: Adobe,
    please just give us a command-line replacement for the Air
    Application Installer (preferably just a launcher stub that reads
    Info.plist). Thanks.

  • Installing a LARGE AIR application

    Hello,
    I am attempting to create an installer for Windows that installs the AIR runtime, our application, and all the content required such that any user can log in and use the application. Our application is an educational tool for autistic children, and will be installed in lab environments in schools.
    Our AIR application by itself is not large - about 5MB. However, it relies upon about 600MB of external assets. These include various forms of media: images, audio clips, SWFs etc. If I try to bundle all of this into a single AIR file using FlashBuilder 4, FlashBuilder dies due to lack of memory to the JVM. I have tried to increase memory to the JVM, but even given the maximum it still does not work. I then attempted to package and sign the AIR file using the command line tools. That appears to work, however that operation results in a bloated AIR file that is over 1GB in size, almost double the size of the content packaged into it. If I attempt to use the sidecar installer provided by Adobe to install this AIR file the installer dies. Further investigation shows that others have hit this same size limitation with AIR files, but there is no resolution in site to this problem.
    Since it seemed impossible to package the entire application into a single AIR file my next attempt was to keep the content separate from the AIR application. I have experimented with Installshield, but have found no way to chain together the sidecar installer MSI with another MSI that installs the content to the same location. I could install the AIR application, and then let the application itself finish the installation by copying the content to app-storage://, but then the application is only usable by the user who installed it. In a lab environment in a school this doesn't work, because typically the person who is installing the application is an administrator, not the end user. app-storage:// resides under a user's directory, not in a shared location. The application is unable to copy files to the app:// location due to the security model of AIR.
    I know that I can do a silent install from the command line using the sidecar installer, but I haven't found a way to chain this together with another MSI that installs the content. It could be that I am too limited by what Installshield Express offers. I am now attempting to use NSIS.
    Any advice anyone may have on how to do this is very appreciated. Surely others have needed to install large media rich AIR applications on Windows. AIR is a great platform for us in many respects, but I must be able to create an easy seamless install process for end users. Our product will be going into use over the next 6 months by over 1000 users, and that number will grow quickly. I would be willing to pay for a support incident from Adobe if that is warranted.
    Thanks
    Kevin MacDonald

    After much gnashing of teeth I I came up with what appears to be a workable solution. I am posting my solution here for the benefit of others. I was able to use NSIS to create an installer that first installs my AIR application via Adobe silent install feature (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AIR/1.5/air_runtime_redist/air_runtime_redist.pdf), and then proceeds to install the content in the same folder. The end result is an application that should work for all users and is a reasonably seamless installation experience . The only downside is that you wind up with a total of 3 new items in the Programs & Features control panel: one for Adobe AIR, one for the NSIS installer, and one for the AIR application. The uninstaller only removes the NSIS installer, but that zaps all the content off the disk so it's not terrible. Another little gotcha is that the install folder in this script needs to match the folder in the descriptor file of the AIR application, because everything needs to wind up in the same folder.
    This also assumes you have permission from Adobe to redistribute the AIR runtime.
    My NSIS script is below.
