AirPort problem after installing Security Update 2007-007

Help! I installed the security update 2007-007 on my Mac mini os x and now my AirPort is not detecting any signal. Should I backup the system and then reboot? I'm not really sure what to do. I have tried almost everything I can imagine. I checked through the user logs and all was functioning properly until the update installed. All of the settings for the network and internet connect say that they have failed.
Please help! I am not particularly familiar about backing up -- how do I do this? (please spell out for me, I'm really new to mac!)
Thanks in advance

Can't help with the airport problem, since I don't do wireless. As for backing up, these should get you pointed in the right direction:

  • Macbook won't boot after installing Security Update 2008-007 (Intel)

I installed security update 2008-007 (intel) on my MacBook last night using Software Update, but now my machine won't boot at all. All I get is the gray start-up screen with the dark gray apple, but there's no spinning progress bar or anything. After 5 minutes or so, the machine auto-restarts, but again hangs on the gray start-up screen. It does this over and over again until I shut it off. I tried to boot into safe mode by holding down shift right after the chime, but it still wouldn't boot (again, not even a spinning progress bar). Can anyone please help me? I really don't want to lose my photos/movies, etc. I'll backup everything promptly if I can just get it to boot. Thanks.

  • Printing problems after installing Security Update 2015-002

After installing Security Update 2015-002 on three separate computers on two different WiFi networks, printers on the network are losing their connections to the computers that can print to them. We have experienced this on a network running a Canon printer and an HP printer - both have disappeared on the network although the printer suggests it is still connected to the network. The same thing has happened on a separate network I manage with a single HP printer on that network. I have tried removing the printers, resetting the printers etc. Nothing is working. I can get one print out of a printer when I turn the printer off and then on. Three minutes later the printer is no longer connected to the computer - although still connected to the network. Please Help.

I think I have figured out that it is in fact the Apple Extreme Base Station that is losing the printer. It is very odd because the printer is connected to the Wifi. My computer is connected to the WiFi and connecting to the internet. The Router for the internet can see the printer. An Apple Extreme is then connected via a network cable in Bridge mode to the router. When I turned the power off the The Apple Extreme and then restored power it all worked. was still working this morning, but again this afternoon I needed to reboot Apple Extreme. It is quite strange that this is happening on two different Networks in different parts of the country at the same time. Maybe the Security Update is somehow affecting/blocking communication with the printer? I just don't know enough. These networks have been up and running with the same printers and computers for years with zero problems - all of a sudden we have the same problem on both Networks.
Any help will be very much appreciated.

Hi finnst, and a warm welcome to the forums!

  • System 10.3.9 freezes at startup after installing Security Update 2006-007

I installed the security update 2006-007 this morning and upon restart everything froze once the words "login window starting" appeared.
I tried a bunch of troubleshooting suggestions from the support pages ("Your Mac won't startup in OS X - 10.3.9 or earlier") including starting in safe mode, single user mode and dumping login preferences, network prefs, reset certain priveleges. None of these solved the problem.
Is the only work around for this to re-install the system?
PowerMac g4 dual proc. Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Ed,
I admit to being somewhat perplexed by your experience. But let me ramble a bit here anyway.
My opinion is that problems of the sort that you are experiencing (freeze after a software update) are almost always due to some software problem. (I base this opinion to a large extent on the experiences of other people in these forums.) The fact that your system works okay with Tiger is consistent with this idea.
But, if it is a software problem, why did it not go way when you re-installed Panther? I am wondering how you did the re-install. Was it an Archive and Install? That is the easiest approach and the first one to try, but there are some things it cannot fix. For one, if user settings and preferences are maintained during the A&I and the problem is related to these settings or preferences, then the problem will remain. In that case, an Erase and Install would be needed to clear out everything. Of course, this also deletes all of your data, so it is something you do not want to do unless you have a backup (which you said that you have).
Another thing that an A&I cannot solve is corruption of the filesystem (computer loses track of where some files start and stop on the hard drive). This problem can usually be detected and often repaired by booting off your install CD and using Disk Utility to repair the disk. You said that you used Disk Utility but gave no other details. I take that to imply that you detected no problems. If there are problems and Disk Utility is unable to fix them, a more powerful utility can sometimes do the job, and sometimes there is no solution except to reformat the hard drive and re-install the operating system. This of course destroys all data on the drive.
If there were a hardware problem behind this, the most likely thing in my view would be some bad blocks on the hard drive. I am pretty sure that Disk Utility, as used above, will look for bad blocks and mask them out if any are found. You mentioned something about 1 Gig of RAM. I think that RAM is unlikely to be the culprit. Problems with RAM usually are manifested as more erratic behavior that what you are experiencing.
You have already exhausted many of usual tricks, so what are your options? It sounds like you do not want to buy a copy of Tiger just to fix this and I can understand that. So, you could go to more and more extreme versions of re-installing your software. By this I mean using your Panther install disks to do an Archive and Install, then to do an Erase and Install if the first did not work, then to reformat and do an install if the Erase and Install did not work. Before doing either of these last two step,s you want to be sure that you have backup that you know works. You have said that "re-installing Panther does not fix the problem" and also that you "haven't done a system restore". It is not really clear to me what you mean by re-installing Panther. Was this from a backup or from your install CD?
If you want to avoid a re-install from your install CD as long as possible, then my suggestion is to attempt to troubleshoot the problem further by booting into Single User mode (which I think you have done). Once you get the disk mounted, I would suggest looking in the system.log file for an error message. Once you have mounted the disk, you can look at the end of the system.log file with the command
    tail /var/log/system.log
Look to see if any of the messages look like they might be indicative of a problem. If you see nothing, you can print out more lines by doing this:
    tail -40 /var/log/system.log
which will cause the last 40 lines to be printed. If you see any message that might be hinting at a problem, post it back here and perhaps someone will get a clue. I should say at the outset that this way of doing things takes a lot of patience and is not guaranteed to provide a solution.
I hope this ramble helps a bit. I know your are frustrated and I hope you get a solution soon.

  • Progress bar looping forever after installing Security Update 2007-2009

    Hi,
I installed the Security Update 2007-2009 in a MacBook with OS X Tiger 10.4.10 and I'm having a series of issues. First of all after the install it said something about some installers having errors and that they were placed in the trash, and after that it asked for a restart. I did the restart but the laptop froze on a screen with just the desktop background, it stayed there for a long while until I shutdown the computer manually. After that I turned on the laptop and it got stuck in the start-up screen with the Apple logo and the progress bar but in a different screen size.
After a while, I shutdown the laptop. Looked for possible solutions. Tried to boot in safe mode, it didn't work. It stayed in the progress bar loop. I then tried to reset the PRAM, didn't work but now the boot-up screen was in the correct size.
Tried to safe boot a couple of times again. Still not working. I booted from the install disk and did the verify and repair permissions. And then I tried to boot up again, in safe mode too, and it didn't work.
I really don't want to archive & install.
Can anyone help? I know I'm not the only one.

These problems can almost always be avoided by Repairing Permissions before & After every Update.
    Single User method might work...
    http://macguru.biz/macosxreapair.html
    http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-15773.html
Otherwise this might help... or not...

After that, assuming you have enough HD space, looks like an Archive & Install is in order.

  • Finder(?) problem after installing security update 2008-008

I hope someone can help with this problem:
After I installed Security update 2008-008 the finder(?) has begun to behave irratically.
Whenever the mousepad is clicked, the dock slides off to the left and the click is not registered by whichever application I am in. Mostly menus are affected. I now have to click the application and menu item several times before the click is registered.
Safari is particularly badly affected with the pointer jumping around the screen when trying to copy an url (dock keeps sliding to the left), page back/forward doesn't work - url links within web pages are not recognised. Furthermore, when using yahoo mail, menus like 'send' and 'save' are not recognised.
Any suggestions how to resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated!
    Andrew

    HI Andrew,
This is most likely caused by some 3rd part APP or kext that is now out of date.
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then test your problem there.
Now reboot in regular mode, if the problem didn't happen in Safe Mode, but does in Regular mode, See if there is anything relevant in...
    /private/var/run/StartupItems
    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems
Also look in in Your Accounts Pref Pane Login Items window.

  • Problems after installing Security Update 2008-02

I have a PPC G4 (1.65GHz/512 MB RAM), patched to 10.4.11. Before running the 2008-02 patch yesterday, I cloned my system to an external drive, ran Onyx (run all maintenance scripts/delete caches/repair permissions). I also uninstalled Miro 1.1 (intending to do a clean install of 1.2) and uninstalled Flash (intending a reinstall). I turned off ClamXAV/Clam Sentry. Updated using Software Update. Process seemed to go smoothly. After it completed, I shut the system down, waited a few minutes, then powered back up. System seemed fine.
Doubleclicking on the flash install dmg gave me the following error:
The following disk images failed to mount
    Reason: No child processes.
I got the same message trying to install Miro.
Thinking the images were corrupted. I re-downloaded them on a PC, tranferring them via flash drive. Same error. Thinking perhaps the flash drive was corrupted, I tried again with a different flash drive. Same error.
I downloaded the standalone file, thinking to rerun it. Same error.
Logged in via safe mode. Same error.
Reran onyx. Shut down. Same error.
Trying logging in under a different admin profile. It did not recognize the password. I logged back in under my normal admin profile; reset the password on the backup admin profile. Still unable to log in. Back again and created a new backup admin profile. Tried running the Miro dmg under that; same error.
Can the security update be uninstalled? That or any other suggestions greatly appreciated.
    TIA,
    shn

Sorry for the delay in replying -- I had put the install disks in a safe place -- so safe that it took me a while to find them <g>.
Booted off the install disks and ran repair permissions (there were a few, most involving changes from read-only to execute). Verified the disk. Rebooted.
    Problem not solved.
Shut down. Did a few chores <g>.
On restart, I got a message that the system had encountered a problem & I needed to shut down. Powered down. Waited a couple of minutes before powering up (successfully). Thinking that, given the permissions repair, I should rerun the the update manually, I tried rerunning the patch. Same error message.
Shut down & waited a couple of minutes before rebooting into safe mode in backup admin profile. tried rerunning the security patch manually. Same error message.
Further suggestions would be most gratefully accepted...

  • FCE 3.5 wouldn't open after installing Security Update 2008-007

Installed the update from Software Update like a good little girl, then couldn't open FCE, which is my main reason for owning the Mac. Don't remember the details. After it dawned on me that the update or my simpleminded approach to installing it was probably the cause of the malfunction, I rebooted from my Carbon Copy Clone, first time ever for real. After everything was demonstrably back to what passes for normal, I sent CCC another $25 to celebrate!
Now I have checked for updates and SU 2008-007 is still sitting there but I am afraid to try it again. How was I supposed to know about doing disc repairs and god knows what-all else before & after? And what else don't I know that will skunk me? Looks like there have been a number of problems on this forum traceable to SU 2008-007. Kind of like dear old Service Pack 2 on the PC...
What's the downside of NEVER installing the update? Or can somebody clarify for me how to do it safely?
    Thanks,
    Sharron

    Hi Sharronuss,
Let me give you my full method...
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
The combo update for PowerPC-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html
The combo update for Intel-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateintel.html
Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
If all the above do not resolve the problem, then it's time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

  • Security update 2007-007 gives TextEdit & RTF file error ?

I am having trouble editing RTF files using TextEdit and I think the Security Update 2007-007 is the culprit, but have no idea how to fix this.
I have repaired permission via disk utility, but this did not fix the problem.
When I use TextEdit to edit existing RTF files, the file is brought up into the window, but the contents are in its raw format. The TextEdit window has:
    {\rtf1\mac\ansicpg10000\cocoartf102
    {\fonttbl\f0\fswiss\fcharset77 Arial-BoldMT;\f1\froman\fcharset77 Times-Bold;\f2\froman\fcharset77 Times-Italic;
    \f3\froman\fcharset77 Times-Roman;\f4\froman\fcharset77 TimesNewRomanPSMT;}
    {\colortbl;\red255\green255\blue255;}
and so on for the file.
If I edit this same file with Safari, the xxx.rtf file comes up nicely formatted.
I am able to see that the Security Update 2007-007 was installed on
    2007-08-14 23:02:04 -0500: Installed "QuickTime" (7.2)
    2007-08-14 23:04:28 -0500: Installed "Security Update 2007-007" (1.0)
As per the software update log file.
Also, I see that the TextEdit application file was changed at around same time:
    ls -l /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents:
    drwxrwxr-x 4 root admin 136 17 Aug 07:41 MacOS
everything else in the directory has a 2003 date on it.
Inside MacOS directory is the TextEdit binary, which also has the same new modification date.
I grabbed a TextEdit binary from another machine (a G3 running 10.3.9) that has not had the security update on it and replaced my TextEdit, and after rebooting just to make sure it was not running an in memory copy, the problem still persists.
The sum for the broken TextEdit is: 30845 128 TextEdit.broken
Also, if I create a new file with TextEdit and edit it (bold, underline, etc) and save as an RTF file and then close the file. When I re-open the file, the file comes up as raw garbage.
So, TextEdit is dead. Any ideas how to revive it?
    thanks

    pdmazz:
    Welcome, again, to Apple Discussions.
I don't use TextEdit myself, or work much in RTF, so some of your more technical descriptions are lost on me. However, here are a couple of suggestions:
Try starting up in Safe Mode. Here is what Safe Booting does: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)
My second suggestion is to use Pacifist to extract TextEdit from the install disk and install it on your computer.
Please post back with update or further questions.
    Good luck.

  • Security Update 2007-007 in the wild

Just finished installing Security Update 2007-007. Fixes a couple of real nasties this time. Catch is it only installs on 10.3.9 and 10.4.10 so if you have not updated to 10.4.10 yet you're leaving yourself open to some very real security issues.
Follow the good advice given here by various gurus in preparing for and update and you'll be fine.

hm, what happens if i installed that and the only update left is the 10.4.10 update.
i didnt realize this was an issue aswell this very unbecoming and peculiar.
(maybe these errors people experience are intentional somehow - force to get leopard lol j/k)

Thanks both of you. I update a clone drive every couple of days or so, but still, any downtime because of a buggy update, or worse some stealth code embedded in the update, would drive me crazy. I'll wait on 10.5 because I want to make sure that my primary apps (like photoshop CS3) are fully tested. Like they say "the first one through the pass gts hit by the most arrows:-))
