Airport WDS problem

Had Tivo installed yesterday via my wireless network. Tech had to change the WDS to 40-bit vs. 128 since Tivo won't work on 128. Now I can't get Airport Express to work. Original instructions for AE say "if you want to set up a WDS, you must choose either 128-bit WEP or Not Enabled security option."
Any way to have all WDS elements work and keep them WEP enabled?

llabgnikcerw, Welcome to the discussion area!
Yes the AirPort Express (AX) works with 40 bit WEP. In fact it is a suggested troubleshooting option in KB 108065.
Perhaps KB 300153, AirPort Express: Difficulty joining third-party network that is using WEP and it's associated links will help you find a solution.

  • New Airport Extreme problems or DSL router problems

    Hi all,
List of what I have: Time Warner Cable (motorola modem) DSL, Latest Airport Extreme (with 2.4Ghz channel 5 & 5GHz channel 149) with the updated version 7.6.1, 2008 MBP4,1 with 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo with Mac OS X 10.5.8.
Now the problem, when I am on my MBP on the web internet slows to a stop, I will go to Systems Preferences, Network, (at this point Airport shows connected Full bars for the ant symble and a green light), then go to: Assist me... , I click Diagnostics, (On the left side) List: Airport (Green), Airport settings (green), Network Settings (green), ISP (either amber or red), Internet (either amber or red) and Server (amber or red).
So, basicly I keep looseing ISP, Internet and Server, now for the kicker, It does not happen every time i'm on my MBP or every day. But if it happens in the morning it will happen all day long.
This was happening with my old Airport Extreme so I up graded to the new one, worked without a problem for about a week, then started again reset & re installed several times changed channels (now back to default settings) I was hopeing that getting the new AE would take care of the problem so I coild start useing streaming TV but I'm not going to spend the money if I can't have the internet all the time.
By the way we just moved from one state to Maine never had this problem before, both area's are rural, & both are with TWC.
So the question is: do I have a TWC Modem problem or Airport Extreme Problem or is it just my MBP?
I have a Win7 desktop hard wired in, and my wife has an ipad2 but she is not home much and dosent seem to be around or on the web when this happens.
I am a serious NOVICE  so if you give advise please be very basic, Step by step!!!
    Thank you all in advance,
Not So Mad Max, But Getting there!!!!

P.S. I do have my AE set to be hidden with WPA2 set and a discoverable Guest also with WPA2 set!!
    Thanks

  • HT1515 Just installed Airport Express on Mac 10.6.8  Can't see base station.  Hard Reset the Airport.  Rebooted machine.  How can I tell if this is a Mac problem or Airport Express Problem?

I have a Mac 10.6.8.  Just installed Airport Express.  I can't see any base stations.  I did a hard reset on the Airport Express, turned off all devices,  turned them back on.   I see plenty of Airport networks in the neighborhood.  How can I tell if I have a Mac problem or an Airport Express problem?  Airport Express blinks Amber.

Obviously,  I'm still using ethernet to be able to reply to this.
Alright, use the same ethernet cable to plug directly into the airport express. This will FORCE the airport utility to now see it regardless of weak signals & interference. You can set it up that way.
BTW, what is the original intent on the express?

  • Time Capsule WDS Problem After Firmware (7.6.1) Update

Some time ago, when I first setup my Time Capsule, setting up WDS with it and my Express went really smoothly - really impressed how it went.
I applied an firmware update last night 7.6.1 to the TC and the AE. What a mistake. I've spent most of the morning trying to get WDS to work correctly. AE can't find TC with WDS, WDS error on TC when ever I change it's settings - it's flashing yellow now even though not 10 minutes ago everything was fine? It's a shame because each device has worked perfectly for over a year - when ever I installed them.
Can anyone shed any light on the WDS problem? Has anyone else experienced any problems since the update?
I've been reading about "Extending The Network" with wireless-N, supposed to be much easier, but not all my devices are N rated. Also I know for a fact that the first time I set this (WDS) up it was so easy - the "wizard" configured everything within 15 minutes. It's almost as if the option automatically setup WDS has been removed. Am I imagining things?

I tried to change some settings on the TC and the AE would no longer connect. It seems everytime I make changes to either the TC or the AE it cause (yellow flashing light) problems. Decided to fall back to firmware 7.6, I've successfully managed to update settings on the TC without there being any problems.
Don't want to waste any more time messing about with network, fingers crossed until the next firmware update.

  • Another Airport Express problem thread.

    Hi Everyone,
I got a Powerbook recently and like many on these threads I am beset with Airport Express problems.
Here's my story. I purchased my Powerbook about a month ago and popped into the Apple Store to ask about the best way to have wireless internet access at home. They recommended the D-Link DSL-300T ADSL modem and Airport Express. I purchased these items and set everything up at home. This didn't work. After a week of talking to Apple, I got the answer to my problem from a Mac message board. Supposedly the ADSL modem recommended by Apple and stocked in their online store wasn't compatible with the lastest version of Airport Express 6.2.0. So I dowgraded the firmware to 6.1.1 and everything worked fine. My next problem was after running an OS X software update which I can presume also updated the Airport Express back to 6.2.0. So again I downgrade to 6.1.1 and it works again. Then I have to get my Powerbook replaced as the refurb Apple sold me didn't have the superdrive in it that Apple advertised, so I transfer my settings and files and i can go online for a couple of days and then it stops working again. I do the downgrade again but this doesn't help. So I take it to see a genius at Apple who performs the AE update 2005-001 which he says will solve the problem of incompatability with 3rd party modems. Take it home, it doesn't work. Powerbook almost gets thrown out of the window.
Why is something that should be so simple so difficult.
My questions are does anyone have a D-Link DSL 300T modem that works with the update 2005-001 ???
Why do Apple recommend an ADSL modem which doesn't work with their products ???
What ADSL modem for the UK does work with Airport Express ???

Hi Bollard, not sure whether this would work with the current model of the modem, but I ran into problems with the DSL300+ when first using it wit an airport extreme, back in 2003.
I eventually resolved the problems by using the modem in bridging mode. Not sure if this would be applicable with the new model, or whether it work if you are needing PPPoA rather than PPPoE, but for what its worth my experiences and solution can be found at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607296&#607296 I've had a fair bit of positive feedback from people who found it worked for them, at least with similar equipment and connection protocol.
    Cheers

  • Persistent Airport connection problems

I've been having persistent airport connection problems since upgrading to Leopard. It got so bad that I finally installed an Ethernet network in my office. However, I really want to be able to use my laptop in other rooms so I want to fix this problem if possible.
Here's what happens. When I turn Airport on, and then select my network, I am prompted to enter my password (even though it's in the keychain). When I click "OK", I get a "connection timeout" error and no connection is made. This happens on both my MacBook and my Mac Pro.
I am currently using a D-Link ethernet/wireless router, but the problem also occurs with an Airport Express which I used previously and still have. I am using mixed 802.11n and 802.11g with WPA personal security and "WPA only" mode.
One note: if I disable any kind of network security, I can easily connect to the network. So it seems to have something to do with the security setting.

Can you reconfigure your router to use WPA2? Some people have found satisfaction after switching to the security model: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7336628#7336628

  • Airport Security, Speed and WDS Problems

I've been reading the posts here about the new AirPort "n". I also posted my own thread about the curious speed issues I've observed. BTW, my computers are all "" capable. An off-the-cuff summary (please correct me if I'm wrong):
    1. WDS in any practical form is hit or miss. Creating extended networks appears to be a basic non-starter, though AirTunes seems to work in many cases. Manual vs Assistant setup sometimes helps, but as an experienced user, I find this all a bit vexing.
    2. Enabling any kind of security has a predictable and detrimental impact on speed. Personally, I've seen WEP security grind formerly 5.7MB download speeds to less than 500, WPA routinely takes 5.5MB to less than 2MB, and turning off security but implementing Timed Access slows my network to less than 80kb download speed.
    3. Turning off security entirely seems in my case to allow the AirPort to function more or less properly. Of course, no security is unacceptable.
    4. There is a resignation to the idea that a future firmware update will fix what are fundamental problems with a perhaps too-early-released product.
I've been pretty methodical about my observations and tweaks -- resetting the unit to factory, sing the interface setup automation as needed, re-powering between changes. I've read about others ganging multiple AirPorts with success. While the new AirPort is not quite a doorstop, it appears to be not-ready-for-prime-time. Or maybe mine is just a lemon.
In my case, I've rectivated my previous-generation Extreme complete with security, AirTunes, network extension, etc (even used the new Utility to do all the setup). My speeds are happily back at 5.7MB down.
    Thoughts?

I appreciate the response. I'd usually agree that "operator error" is at the root. After over 20 years of using Apple products, this is the first that has me scratching my head. But I'm not new to this -- I built one of the first and largest Xsan installs in the U.S. I'm an early adopter, and most always an early success story.
As I said earlier, I've worked the scenarios very methodically. It could very well be that this is a hardware issue with this particular unit, or a higher percentage of units is failing than the norm. That would not be new - early new hardware in some Apple product line have experienced teething problems. Not a long term worry, though.
My next step is replacing the hardware, carefully observing serial numbers, etc.
The question, btw, is implicit -- is there something altogether simple that escapes me and a number of reasonable users that is causing a problem?

  • Airport Extreme (N) to Airport Express (G) WDS Problems

Recently got an Airport Extreme n.
Trying to use and older Airport Express to extend network / use for AirTunes.
Everytime I reconfigure the Extreme for WDS / Allow network to be extended it seems to switch to 5ghz only.
loses all G connections - ie only Apple TV still connecting!
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

I have an old AEX, and could never get WDS to work with my extreme-n either.
Apple is moving away from the old WDS to the new "extend a wireless network" mode. This is more evident in the AEBS (dual-band), WDS is now a hidden option.
You have two choices, one is to use the AEX-g in client mode for AirTunes streaming, or get a new AEX-n to extend the n network.

  • Airport Extreme n + Express + WDS = Problems

I'm stumped and looking for some help. I have an Extreme Base station located in our home office / refinished basement downstairs and an express upstairs in our kitchen. Right now we have 2 laptops running off of the network, 1 mac and 1 pc. Many times when I am upstairs and I open up my powerbook it doesn't get an internet connection. The express is green and the base station is green. I then need to walk my laptop dowstairs to get a signal and then walk back upstairs to use the internet.
All software updates are in place and when I go to my airport utility I rarely see both devices at the same time. Upstairs shows the express and downstairs shows the extreme. The distance between the 2 devices is about 60 feet by walking... otherwise they're actually above one another... about 15-20 feet away. A few questions:
    1. Shouldn't I always see both?
    2. Many posts talk of security issues - should I adjust mine one way or another?
    3. Do I need another Extreme in the mix as a relay?
I've been a mac user for 15 years and this one has certainly got me. Maybe a reinstall with Leopard will answer all of my questions??? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Two words popped out when I read your post: basement & kitchen. Both of these are high potentials areas for Wi-Fi interference.
Before considering adding additional base stations to your WDS, I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like the following to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible:
    o MacStumbler, or
    o iStumbler

  • WDS problem, Deauthenticating with station 00:1f:f3:c4:9d:07(reserved 2).

    Hi
I'm working a on problem with a WSD-network, consisting of 3 brand new devices, a Timecapsule, an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express, all running the latest firmware, 7.4.1.
I've configured the Airport Extreme to be the main-station connected to the internet. When I add a second device to the WDS, I get the following in the log on either the AE or AX, depending on which devices is connected.
    Mar 12 16:26:13 Severity:5 Deauthenticating with station 00:1f:f3:c4:9d:07 (reserved 2).
    Mar 12 16:26:15 Severity:5 Associated with station 00:1f:f3:c4:9d:07
    Mar 12 16:26:19 Severity:5 Disassociated with station 00:1f:f3:c4:9d:07
I've tried resetting all devices to default, doing manuel and guided installs, running with 2 or 3 devices, but I still get the errors, and an unstable network.
At times it seems like there's a network-loop, as a constant 'ping' increases in latency over time from 20ms to 10.000ms, but reconnecting one of the devices, seems to fix this problem at random.
Main(Airport Extreme) is running 802.11n(b/g compatible), as there's no other options.
I'm using WPA2 Personal as security.
Any clues to the problem is much appreciated,
    Best regards

Having a very similar issue as well. I am using an Airport Extreme as my base station, with two Airport Express units, one as a relay and one as a remote. My house is pretty big, so the remote is actually out of the range of the Extreme base station, hence the relay, which sits halfway in between. I have an office in the house that is in the room with the remote Express, and every 15 minutes or so, like clockwork, I have to turn off the airport in my iMac, then turn it back on to get connectivity restored. All while the light on all the devices remain green. The signal will just drop, the airport utility will see absolutely nothing. I've spent the last two weeks going through all the google hits, and forums with this issue, and nothing seems to have worked. Good luck guys, it looks like with all the great things Apple has done, they must be really stumped on this one, for no resolution has ever surfaced that was the end all be all fix. Here's a look at my log from the AE in the office:

  • WDS problems - using expresss to extend etreme(n)

I just upgraded my old airport extreme to the new extreme(n) - I was hoping to to get better coverage in my house and faster connection for @TV.
My problem is that I had previously used an aiport express as WDS to extend the range of the network. Now, the express does not seem to work. Issues:
    1. I used the new airport utility (not the old airport admin utility) to set up the express to WDS from the new network. Should I use the older airport admin utility?
    2. While the setup seemed to go ok, I get a flashing amber light on both the extreme and airport, and I can no longer find the express on the utility despite many scans. I got an message in airport utility that the exteme had an error setting with the WDS.
    3. Oddly, despite the flashing amber light, my macbook seems to pick the internet fine (and yes I've checked that it is picking up the right network).
Bottom line - Does the express work with the extreme n. Is there something new I'm supposed to do to get this to work?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Tony

    Tony,
A couple of comments. If you do not have a Intel Core 2 Duo machine and I don't believe I saw any other computers in your system. The new 802.11n Extreme has better speed and greate range only if your system is basically entirely "n" capable. A Core Duo machine is at best "G".
You need to factory reset the Express. Take a paper clip, unplug the Express, press in the reset button and while holding in the reset button plug the Express back in. It will flash green several times then flash amber, continue holding in the reset button until the Express' light turns solid amber. Then you can release the reset button. Give it about five minutes to reinitialize. Once it initializes, run the Airport Utility and it should show your Express' factory ID. You should be able to add it as part of a WDS is you so desire. Once you've reset your Express and join the system, the Express' amber light should go green. Just a note, if you did not reset your Express the Extreme will not recognize it as part of the system and it most likely will not show up in the Airport Utility.
Your Extreme's amber light is probably flashing because you didn't set security to WPA or WEP. If you open Airport Utility, chose the base station and go to the Summary tabl. Double click on the Base Station Status light which should be flashing amber. It should tell you what the problem is but as I said most likely no security has been set. If you wish to run your system with no security you can turn off the flashing amber light via Airport Utility.

  • Even more bizarre WDS problems

I am setting up a home WDS network with 3 bases, one AEBSn and two expresses. I have all three in the same room. Last night, they were all working. This morning, Airport Utility cannot find one of the expresses. iStumbler shows all three bases with signals between 50-70%.
So what is the problem here? Is the express faulty? It seems to be broadcasting fine.
Before anyone else suggests it, there are no other wireless networks in range and no sources of wifi interference in the room.
Just to test what would happen, I restarted the working express. Nothing happened and I still have a missing express.
Then I looked at the AEBS. It is reporting that the missing express is a wireless client with a signal of -61, noise of -104 and rate of 1. The signal/noise numbers are close to the other clients, but the other clients all have rates of 54, 54 and 24. One of the clients is the working express, and I guess the other two are my computers.
I restarted the AEBS and the express simultaneously, and that allowed the other express to become available in Airport Utility. Now, all three bases are back up again.
Someone please tell me what is going on here. I can't start to distribute the bases around the house if they won't even work in the same room.

I have been having a similar issue. I have two AEBSn and one express. Every few days one of the clients will disappear and not be found by the airport utiltiy. Like posnera, the missing client shows up aith a rate of 1. I also may or may not get an error message. Often the light is green on bosth the main AEBS and the missing client.
At first I thought it might have been a range issue but it is happening even when they're all in the same room. Restarting the missing client does the trick but I can't figure out why I keep getting a dropout.
    It's driving me crazy...

  • Airport network problem

I have the following set up in a WDS network at home:
    Airport Extreme (main base station)
    Airport Express1 (Relay)
    Airport Experss2 (Remote)
we have 3 mac in the house (1 PB and 2 iBooks).
The system seems to work fine and we can connect to the internet etc
    Problems:
    1) Randomly one or other of the computers gets knocked off the network and the network message reads Airport has self assinged IP and may not be able to connect to the internet. Machine IP goes to 169.254.xxx.xxx. Interestingly in Airport Admin Utility all the airports still show 14.1.132.xx IP addresses.
    This is the main issue
    2) Air Tunes on Airport2 works briefly (say 5-10 minutes) and then invariably stops.
I have the network set up on channel 6 and set to 802.11b/g. Could this be a problem?
I was wondering if you had any suggestions for me or if you have seen this problem before

Most likely problem is radio frequency interference. Try using channel 1 or 11 and see if this helps.
Unfortunately, a WDS (especially one with a relay and a remote) is going to be far more prone to problems with getting reliable data transmission than a non-WDS network. It is a known contributing cause to the Airtunes dropout problem (which you are also experiencing).

  • Airport + WDS: Internet connection losses

    Good morning all!
I have a WDS network with
    - one Airport Express (Called "A") used to ditribute an Internet connection. This is the WDS main station.
    - one Airport Express (Called "B") that extends the initial network AND that streams audio with Airtunes. It is a WDS remote station.
When I surf the net (via "A") during a song is streamed on "b", I loose my IP address, the audio stream is down, the Internet connection too, and I must ask a new IP address (via the "repair" button) to restart a new stream on "B".
Each time I click on a link the same problem repeats!
Could somebody tell me how I could solve this problem please?
Thank you so much and best regards,
    Geoffrey

I am going under the pretense you have seen this set-up diagram.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107454
Be sure to take special care to read this set-up thoroughly. As another point of interest sometimes Interference can cause a loss of or interuption in the signal. Sometimes a simple relocation of the main can do the trick, while at other times it may require you to find and eliminate this issue such as.

The above link will give you some guidelines to follow.

  • Do I Need To Back-Up This File? Airport Utility Problem Too....

    Hi all....
I need to start by thanking those in this particular forum for all of your help. My Time Capsule was unable to complete it's initial back-up - I made 4 calls and 3 hours on the phone with Apple Care and they were not able to figure out my Time Capsule problem.
Scanning the forums I saw several suggestions, one was to exclude some files so you can zone in on the problem. First file I tried - worked! It was labeled Previous System - I believe this is the file for my old operating system (Tiger). Is it worth scanning this file to find the problem - or do I even need this file backed up?
Also, recently I have been having trouble with my airport utility. Whenever I select Manual Setup - the program freezes and I get the spinning wheel. My network is working fine - but I can't get my other cpu (PC) to print from the network printer. When I try to print - it just comes up as an error with no details. I figured it was a network setting - but like I said, when I click on the manual set-up - I just get the spinning wheel and I have to force quit. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
