Airport wlan and burglar alarm

Hey I have bought an ABUS burglar alarm. I thought its control panel was a wireless one. But it was only the contacts, PIR camera i.e that was wireless.
The controlpanel itselv must be connected to the internet via router. In my case a Netgear.
When my router and the control panel are placed far from each other, I have to draw a looong cabel. Not very easy. So I got the idea, that I could set up my old AirPort Express near the contolpanel of the burglarm alarm. Then connect it to my existing wireless network (from the Netgear) - and put a short ethernet cabel from the AirPort Express to the controlpanel of the burglar alarm.
I succeded to config. the Airport Express to my existing wireless network. The green light is on  -  but no connection between the control panel and the internet.
Am I complete wrong in my theory ... or? HELP please

not actually answered, but resolved...

  • Are apple airport wlan card M7600LL/A and apple airport wlan card M7600LL/E the same

    Good evening!
Is there any technical difference between the Apple Airport WLAN card M7600LL/A and the Apple Airport WLAN card M7600LL/E?
    Thanks forward and best regards.

Apparently they are physically similar. However, the E model is the last of the genre and has a few more features as you will see here.

  • XP with AirPort Express and WDS ... works brilliant!!! Read how to ...

I have worked out an interesting setup which uses max. power of AE with my 3Com Router, Dell and Denon AVR-4306.
It took some hours of testing and finding the right configs, which was a pain in my brain. But now: YEEEHAAA!
    My home setup is:
    - AirPort Express 6.3
    - 3Com OfficeConnect Model 3CRWDR100B-72
    IMPORTANT: IT SUPPORTS WDS!!!
    - Dell Inspiron 9300 with WLAN
    - Epson Stylus Color 740
    - DENON AVR-4306 [Receiver with Ethernet connection]
Till yesterday I used AE as a client which turns off the ethernet port. And I had a router without WDS support. AND: I had those audio drop outs which made no fun.
The new configuration at the end is not such complicated.
AE is connected by WDS to my router, by Toslink and ethernet cable to my receiver. A printer by USB of course.
    Now I am able to:
    - WLAN stream AAC by Dell with AirTunes through AE to my receiver
    - WLAN printing
    - WLAN config of my receiver and internet radio streaming
    - write that posting by WLAN and DSL ... STRIKE!
AND THE BEST: NO AUDIO DROP OUTS ANYMORE!!!
    The configuration:
I will not discribe the WLAN setup between my Dell and 3Com in all details because this should be a basic knowledge.
First I configure router and Dell with WEP. I didn't test WPA with WDS yet. I set the router to my ISP settings to get connection to DSL. The router config by webbrowser is not complex. This is done by the shipped manual. DHCP turned on etc..
Next step I will setup my DELL for WLAN connection to the router. My router eg. just uses WEP HEX. I can use a ASCII passphrase but this will be converted to HEX. What's now important: I had to use HEX also for DELL WLAN config and AE WITHOUT "$" before the key what's often discribed in the web. Otherwise AE config will give an error message and ASCII will prevent connection by WEP. I set my DELL to IP by DHCP. I use the same ISSD of the router and set WEP. The first setup was done by ethernet cable which is discribed in my manual. After all steps I turned off LAN and am able to connect to WLAN DSL.
    Now the important part:
I configured the router after config and restart of AE again. The router MUST SUPPORT WDS!!! Otherwise my config will not work. In my 3Com config I turn on WDS and scan for AE when it is set up right. This will grab the right MAC address automatically. But it's also possible to set the AE MAC manually and then:
I will do a AE reset by holding down the reset button till the yellow light flashes fast. This will set the AE to basic settings. After a while you will recognize the AE's factory name in your WLAN network list on your PC where you also see your router WLAN connection.
Now drop the router connection by connecting to AE which is unprotected.
    Open the AirPort Admin Utility.
    Choose the factory AE name.
    Open the config.
Change the password of your AE which is basic "public" to the SAME of your router.
Choose „AirPort“ and set „Wireless Mode“ to „Create a Wireless Network“.
Eg. I use for „Network Name“: „DELL9300“ which matches with the SSID of the router.
Set „Channel“ to „1“ [it seems most robust here].
Set „Wireless Security“ with WEP. In my case I have to use the router's HEX key.
On page „Internet“ set „Connect using“ to „AirPort (WDS)“.
The „MAC Address“ MUST be the MAC address of the WLAN router, BUT THE WLAN ADDRESS ... NOT LAN ADDRESS!!!
[this was one trap and time killer because I just tried to use the printed MAC address on my routers label which is WRONG because there's a WLAN MAC ADDRESS I found by accident in my router's config overview]
Activate „Also allow wireless client computers“.
    I use a static IP:
    IP 192.168.1.200
    Subnet 255.255.255.0
    Router 192.168.1.1
    DNS 192.168.1.1
On page “Network” activate “Distribute IP addresses”.
On page „WDS“ set to „remote base station“.
    Activate „Allow wireless client computers“.
You will recognize here that the WLAN MAC address was copied automatically.
On page "Music" activate AirTunes and define a name. In my case "DENON".
Save the config to harddrive and then save it to AE.
    AE will restart automatically.
NOW PRAY! If everything is done right you will reconnect your PC to the router [automatically because AE is dropped or try manually] and after a while the AE lamp shows "green".
The full power of AE is unlocked and ... actually ... AirTunes still plays without drop outs. GREAT! This could also be router related or WDS works generally better than client mode.

The 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) can be configured in a number of ways when the topic is around extending.
If you just want to support wired clients, you can configure the AXn as a wireless Ethernet bridge. In this configuration, the AXn would "join" an existing wireless network and share that connection via its Ethernet port.
The other option is to configure the AXn to extend another AirPort. In this configuration, the AXn would both extend the other AirPort's wireless range, but it would also have its Ethernet port enabled for wired clients.

  • Airport Express and Belkin F5D7633-4

I have got a Belkin F5D7633-4 adsl wi-fi router and would like to place an airport express in another part of the house to extend the range of the network and internet connection to my powerbook in certain parts of the house as currently the belkin wi-fi range is limited in our house. Would I be able to do this or will I have to replace my newly purchased belkin router for airport base?

I got the Belkin F5D7230-4 you mentioned and try
since christmas eve to connect my Airport Express via
    WDS to it.
I tried all different encryption methods without
success. The only possibility up to now was a
complete open WLAN with no encryption at all. Then AX
connects (not as WDS client) creating a new WLAN and
internet access and iTunes works nicely. That can't
    be the solution?!
    Got a hint for me?

One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Having said that, this will only work if they use an algorithm, some don't and in these cases you must use the HEX key regardless of the length of the plain text password.

  • Problems with Airport Extreme and OS 7.6.4

Last week, we updated three devices (Time Capsule, Airport Express and Airport Extreme) to OS 7.6.4. Time Capsule and Airport Express seems to work well but the Airport Extreme didnt! Users of the AiEx told me about bad ping statistisc after wlan login. The connectivity changes in a curious way. one second, 0 % loss and one second after the connectivity changes to more than 50% loss, even the users are sitting in te same room, the AiEx does ???
We used a 2 GHz and also an 5 GHz Wlan-Network. Additional to the problem of connectivity, somtime the 5GHz-Network ist for seconds not visible!!
Now  i restored the old 7.6.3 and it works well like before. One additional triel results in the same problem, even i resettet the station two times.
What to do? for the next time, our Airport Extreme got the old OS 7.6.3.

If memnongr's advice doesn't work, you can revert to an old version of the firmware by using AirPort Utility 5.6.

Go to Base Station>Upload Firmware on the menu bar, and it will allow you to revert to an earlier version.

  • IPhone issues / burglar alarm question

    Hi,
Am on BT infinity. Just wondered if any of you use speedtest.net app on iPhone. I only get a download speed of about 15 - 20 mbits sec over 'N' wireless. I get similar on my laptops but these have 'G' cards so the speed is to be expected. Just wondered why my iPhone 4 and my wife's iPad don't do better especially as they are 'N' and my netgear broadcasts N upto 130 mbps. Hard wired on my laptop I get about 25-30 m/bits download depending on which way the wind blows! (unfortunately am a fair way from cabintet so my infinity sync not as fast as most).
Second question, last couple of evenings I noticed internet performance on my iPhone nose dived. Things like safari browsing and speedtest.net app were fine but the iTunes store app was ludicrously slow. Are BT throttling this traffic in the evening for the iPhone 4? Made it unusable. I know it's not the actual store because under 3G the performance was better than wifi. It's weird because normal safari browsing remains quick.
Final question, we are getting burglar alarms fitted shortly. Do the sensors or any part of the burglar alarm system have negative impacts on Wifi? It's an ADT system in case anyone has the same.
    Many thanks,
    Wayne

With wireless networks the speed is always restricted by the slowest bit of kit attached. So if you have any G's on the N network, all your N's will be slowed to G.
Your speed may be another issue. You would need to goto http://speedtester.bt.com/  and check what throughput you get. It's good to do this test in the morning, afternoon and evening. Then you should see if capacity is the issue.
Can't answer about the Alarm, but would think the sensors are infra-red and should not effect it, would also assume it may have to be on it's own phone line.

  • Airport Extream and wireless IP camera

I previously used a 3-Com WLAN router (connected my DSL). Had my network camera wirelessly connected with port forwarding so that I could reach the camera from wherever in the world on an ip-address. Now bought an Airport Extreme and cannot figure out how to get my camera connected to the Airport Extreme station. From my PC lap top I can see the camera on the wireless network. I have assigned a fixed IP-address that is within the adress pool specified on the Aiport. Strange enough , the camera won't connect to the Airport even over a LAN connection. This connection works fine directly (LAN) to my PC

  • Setting up a WDS with airport extreme and Belkin router

    Hi,
I had my airport extreme base station set up with a linksys router (the common one everyone has) and it worked fine. I moved and now am trying to set it up with a Belkin F5D7234-4, and have not been able to get it to work. I have tried both the WLAN and the LAN MAC addresses. Is there something I am missing? Thanks

Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your Belkin router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS).
The few Belkin routers, that are known to work are models: F5D7230-4 and F5D7231

  • Configuring the time capsule airport wlan function as "connect to wlan", the time caspule gets a correct IP adress from the other wlans IP range, but does not assign this to the ethernet ports. With Airport Express it worked!

Configuring the time capsule airport wlan function as "connect to wlan", the time capsule gets a correct IP adress from the other wlans IP range, but does not assign this to the ethernet ports. With Airport express it worked, the single Ethernet port got the IP Parameters passed through!
My setup is a Vodafon Esaybox connected to ISP. Time Capsule is not able to extend the wlan of the easybox, neither airport express can do.
Only the option "connect to wlan" is succesful.
With airport express I was able to connect my Sony Bravia TV to the lan via ethernet to stream pictures, the TV set got an IP adress from the easybox.
With the time capsule the easybox dosn't find devices connected to the ethernet ports to submit IP adresses. The TV set get another IP adress (169.xxx.x.x.) in subnet mask 255.255.0.0 and I don not now where from.
My notebook is a MacBook pro.
    Any idea????
    Thank a lot in advance!
    Kind regards
    Ingo

Neverthe less, could there be the chance, that this feature could be implemnented with an firmware update?
That would appear to be a question for Apple to answer. You can make suggestions to Apple here:
Apple - AirPort Extreme - Feedback
If the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule are configured to "extend a wireless network" they will provide additional wireless coverage....and...the Ethernet ports are enabled in this type of setup.
The "catch" here is that you must have an Apple router providing the network to be extended.

  • Burglar Alarm System Design?

Hi I am looking for a Burglar Alarm System program on Labview, I have found this one example however it is missing a Sub Vi named Arm.vi
Any help would be greatly appreciated if anyone has any programs or could work out how to get this one running. I am no expert on Labview so need loads of help.
    Thank You

Message Edited by Support on 11-04-2009 08:39 AM

The "Arm.vi" sub-vi is the heart of the program! The rest is just a rather messy wiring of the "entry" switches. Not sure why the "panic" button is set to stop the program, they usually set off the alarm. Judging from what is in the vi you supplied (apparently a school project) the "Arm.vi" allows the user to enter a "security code" from the keypad, waits some time after that, then starts monitoring the status of the "entry switches". If you have LabVIEW I would suggest making a simple program that loops at a specific rate (use a timed loop if available (I think it is only in the Full Dev package), otherwise a loop with a "wait (ms)" function set to a reasonable time (don't need to scan too fast, once every 200mS is More than fast enough I would think), and if it detects a "breech" sets a latched boolean (shift registers can be used to latch a boolean).  Give it a try, it is the way you grow to be "an expert at LabVIEW". It is unlikely that you will get a complete solution here, but if specific, incremental questions are asked you probably will.

  • I'm having a hard time setting up my external hard from with my AirPort Extreme and Time Machine Backups.

I have been using a Mac Mini with an external hard and Time Machine.  I bought an Airport Extreme and have had problem setting up the hard drive using the USB port on the Airport Extreme.  I also just recently bought a Mac Book Air and hope to have both computers back up to the external hard drive using Time Machine and Airport Extreme.  I have been using the optical drive from the Mac mini to load programs into the Mac Book Air.  I think I'm just getting confused in Finder.  I am just not seeing the hard drive.  I ended up plugging the hard drive back into the Mac Mini and that is work fine again.  How do I setting the external hard drive up to the AirPort Extreme and use for both computers?  Or at least to start with the Mac mini.

It's critical to understand that Time Machine (TM) stores backups differently between local and network drives. That would mean the TM backup on your locally attached USB hard drive will not be directly useable when it is connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). There is a way to copy a local version to a network version, but it is not fool-proof. When you do connect this drive and point TM to it, TM will start a brand new backup, leaving your existing backup as is.
If your current backup is critical to you, you may want to consider getting a second USB drive to attach to the Extreme and use your existing one as a backup ... or use TM's multi-backup process to backup to more than one destination drive alternatively.
So, at this point, you may want to make a decision on how you want to go forward to help provide a solution for you.
To directly answer your question, when you go to select a destination for a Time Machine backup, the drive(s) that show up under "Backup Disks" are those that TM already recognizes and has backed up to. Those listed under "Available Disks" are drives (either local or on the network) that TM can back up to.

  • Airport Extreme and external HDD - cannot be found under Windows (XP/Vista)

    Dear All,
I am about to loose it. I have an Airport Extreme (7.4.2), most recent version (802.11n)connected to my cable modem. Attached is a 2TB HFS+ Formated HDD. I have a number of machines. My primary machine is a Dell XPS with Vista and MacDrive installed.
Now: On my AirPort utilities through the Dell the different HDD's connected via USB (I have tried half a dozen) are all visible. They are shared and I have tried all options, e.g. "with Disk Password" etc, tried to give and deny access to guests etc.
I have tried various things incl. switching off the firewall has not been a success either. I am basically ready to buy a Mac now, but I am worried that the problem will persist for all my Windows based PC's.
Who can help with a step to step guide? tried the TCP/IP settings on the XP machine as well (entering the IP address of both Airport Extreme and Express).

    Hi!
I've got the same problem as of Friday when I upgraded my Notebook from XP to Windows 7.
It does not recognize the HDD anymore, neither on the Windows7 Notebook nor on 2 different XP- PC's.
I disabled the password functionality and removed the HDD several times, no change.
When I look to the data volumes overview in the system settings, all internal HDD's and the CD partition of the Toshiba drive are shown. The HDD partition of the drive is shown as "non allocated".
Is there any workaround to get access to the data????
    Best regards,
    Helmut

I cannot add a Wi-Fi guest network. Gone to Utilities>Airport Utilities and all I get is an image/browser of my Airport Extreme. Looking for the browser window which has the title Wireless but cannot find anywhere. What am I doing wrong?

Open AirPort Utility. The first screen looks something like this:
Click on the AirPort Extreme and another screen will appear. Click Edit, then the window with the Wireless tab will appear.
If you do not see these screens, you will need to start over and configure your AirPort again.

    Hello Aldric, welcome to discussions.
It's quite suspicious that your Airport card and one of your memory modules have suddenly "disappeared" at the same time.
This could certainly indicate a hardware issue, but I won't speculate as to what caused it. Sure, a power surge could do this... have you had one recently?
I would try taking the memory module, and the airport card out of your system, and then re-install them.
If your situation does not improve, then you should probably take your machine to an authorized Apple service center.
